Bosses and their employees regularly joust as if engaged in a real-life chess match, but supervisors usually hold the edge because they are generally more familiar with the psychological arts of manipulation and intimidation. Journalist Russell Wild's Games Bosses Play is an attempt to level the game board by providing workers with the ammunition to successfully fight back. Lighthearted in approach but deadly serious in intent, it parlays interviews with more than 100 experts--from employees to executives to third-party observers--into a revelation of the top 36 exploitative techniques utilized by bosses worldwide and the measures that can be used to counter them.

Entertaining with a dose of common sense.......2003-06-12
Humorous titles of the games describe common office situations such as "Gold Plated Droppings", "The Happy Usher" and "Squirrel in the Corner Office". The game is described, analyzed and then followed by some advice on what to do. Most of the advice is plain old common sense. What's nice about the book is that it is entertaining and by reading through these vignettes, you've mentally prepared, or play-acted the advice so that when you recognize a game, you would have already read the script. For example, if the boss is playing the "Happy Usher", and you're not prepared, you'd find yourself with the desk cleaned out and the papers signed within a blink of an eye. Whereas if you've read the script, you'd be in a better position to negotiate, ask for clarification, and not be hoodwinked into agreeing that you're really better off without this job. Instead you would not let the boss off the hook easily, and may get a chance to make a counteroffer. Usually, the "Happy Usher" is looking for an easy kill, and by having a counter-proposal ready for such a situation, you just might save your job.
Save Your Money and buy The Bully at Work instead.......2003-05-29
There is very little information in this book. If you really want a great book on bad bosses buy The Bully at Work by Gary and Ruth Namie.
Simulations to Help You Avoid Problems with Bosses.......2000-05-25
Games Bosses Play is a series of vignettes about how the relationship between you and your boss could end up in uncomfortable circumstances for you. The book goes on to suggest ways to reduce the downside after the damage is done, and also to avoid the downside before it occurs.
I recognize a number of these situations from superiors I worked for, and have observed others doing taking other tacks described in the book.
The main weakness of the book is that the advice goes overboard in a number of circumstances, and could backfire on you. For example, while being fired, the book suggests that as a last resort you drop hints about filing a law suit. That approach could cause you to spend a lot of money on a lawyer and lose some of your negotiating posture. Most executives are trained to stop talking to you as soon as you mention law suit. In a circumstance where the boss says that he has no influence over his boss, the book suggests asking your boss if you can meet with her/his boss alone to plead your case. That will seem very threatening to your boss, and could cause you to alienate someone who may be trying to help you.
If you follow the advice in this book, you should be sure to temper it with a lot of common sense and some willingness to feel like your superior may not be trying to do you in. Obviously, the best advice if you have a lousy boss is to transfer into another part of the company or into a new company.
The main value of this book is to provide the opportunity to think about circumstances before they arise. If they do arise, you will be better prepared.
Although this book is aimed at the needs of those who work for bosses, I suggest that supervisors and executives also read this. You may find some ways that you can do your work better as well. You may be surprised to see some of the ways that your actions can be interpreted and misintepreted by your subordinates.
Bosses Beware!.......2000-04-07
I've read every book there is about bad bosses, and this is by far the best. It gives very sensible advice about what to do when a boss drives you crazy. And it was lots of fun to read-- very, very funny. I'm just starting out in the career world, and I plan to keep this book for a long time.
An enlightening book.......2000-03-22
This book may not be the end all to office politics, but it does make the reader aware of some of the head games that occur in offices. Russell Wild uses humor to present a not-funny environment that many of us find ourselves in. He has some suggestions for how to react; since all of us are different persons and our bosses are different from the examples -- think before you take action. The best things you may gain from this book are the ability to recognize a game and to preplan a strategy if you think someone will play the game on you. Knowledge is power! Forwarning allows one to forearm.

Book Description
This book offers a new approach to interest rate and modeling term structure by using
models based on optimization of dynamical systems, rather than the traditional stochastic differential equation models. The authors use dynamic models to estimate the term structure of interest rates and show the reader how to build their own numerical
simulations. It includes software that will enable readers to simulate the various models covered in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Sounded like a good idea, but..........2006-11-03
The concept of dynamic interest rate models, less finance, more economic based ones, sounded like a very promising area. However, I found this book really far away from the actual, Wall Street caliber, modeling techniques and trends.
At the very end it feels like a very long white paper to promote the authors software product.
Somehow disappointed because I did not find it useful.
Book Description
CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA: MEDIA EDITION, 3rd is an offspring of Cole/Smith's THE AMERICAN SYSTEM OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, 9th (2001). It relies on the hallmarks of "the Eagle, " including the research and conceptual framework of the larger text, but the material has been rewritten in a style that is descriptive and informative, without being overly theoretical. A less expensive, shorter text than most Introductory titles in the market today, it is approachable and includes solid and balanced research within a social science context, taking into account the economic, political, sociological, historical, and philosophical implications of the criminal justice system. It also has an increased instructor's package as well as more student-oriented features. The text is now more accessible to students of all levels. With the new CD-ROM, packaged with this edition, students will be introduced to an interactive world for learning.
Customer Reviews:
Criminal Justice in America Review.......2007-09-06
This book was in the condition that Amazon sold it to me in however I did wait for nearly a month to receive it and had to complain to customer service in order to get the book even shipped. I've always had good experiences with Amazon so I'm hoping this was just a one time thing...
informative and up to date.......2007-05-30
Criminal Justice in America (5th edition) proposes a clear view of the criminal justice system. The book is filled with up to date information including the citation of rulings from the Robert's court in 2006. Cole & Smith greatly sum up topics that can easily have and do have books of their own. Some little things that make a great addition to the book is review questions and answers seen throughout the chapter as well as special little sections in which they talk about specific careers in the criminal justice system. As far as the previous reviewers that claim this book to be racist, they must have only read the first section dealing with "is the criminal justice system racist?"
Terrible Book.......2003-09-24
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS THAT THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF FACTS, BUT THEY ARE BASED ON RACISM. NEARLY ALL PICTURES IN THIS BOOK HAVE WHITE COPS WITH FULL ARMOR AND RIOT GEAR ON BEATING A BLACK MAN TO THE GROUND WITH THEIR NIGHT STICKS AS SEEN ON PAGE 103. POINTING OUT HOW MANY BLACK CRIMINALS THERE ARE IN THE WORLD IS NOT NECESSARY EITHER. ...
UNAPPROPRIATE MATERIAL.......2002-10-24
I FOUND THIS BOOK TO HAVE MANY RACIAL REMARKS AGAINST AFRICAN AMERICANS. SOME THINGS YOU JUST KNOW AND DON'T NEED TO BE SAID. THE CONSTANT PPOINTING OUT OF HOW MANY BLACKS ARE CRIMINALS AND HOW MANY BLACKS ARE POLICE OFFICERS IS IRREVELANT IN THE STUDY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE. CRIMINALS ARE OF ALL RACES AND SO ARE POLICE OFFICERS. I WOULD NOT SUGGEST THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO WANTS A CAREER IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FIELD.

Customer Relationship Management: A Databased Approach offers the promise of maximized profits for today's highly competitive businesses. This innovative book provides readers with the tools and techniques to effectively use CRM. It emphasizes the utilization of database marketing in order to build strong and profitable customer relationships. Kumar first describes how to implement database marketing and then looks at recent advances in CRM applications. Critical marketing issues like optimum resource allocation, purchase sequence, and the link between acquisition, retentions, and profitability are also examined on the basis of empirical findings.
Customer Reviews:
Practical and Insightful.......2005-11-29
This book combines a solid theoretical (scientific) approach with practical tactics ... an all-too-rare combination. Kumar and Reinartz are well-known for their thought-leadership in customer database analytics and management. They don't disappoint in this must read book for anyone looking to make their CRM systems deliver real financial returns.
Wellgrounded read on CRM.......2005-06-10
This is a nice summary document that Kumar and Reinartz have produced. What sets this book apart from virtually all CRM books is the strong grounding in their own (and colleagues') research. Some of the book is more descriptive, other parts are real gems - not to be found elsewhere. What they really hammer home is the fact that customer satisfaction and loyalty are just means, what matters for companies is profits. These authors understand that satisfaction and loyalty building comes at a cost - something most CRM books just don't get.

Book Description
Scott Spector's adventurous cultural history maps for the first time the "territories" carved out by German-Jewish intellectuals living in Prague at the dawn of the twentieth century. Spector explores the social, cultural, and ideological contexts in which Franz Kafka and his contemporaries flourished, revealing previously unseen relationships between politics and culture. His incisive readings of a broad array of German writers feature the work of Kafka and the so-called "Prague circle" and encompass journalism, political theory, Zionism, and translation as well as literary program and practice.
With the collapse of German-liberal cultural and political power in the late-nineteenth-century Habsburg Empire, Prague's bourgeois Jews found themselves squeezed between a growing Czech national movement on the one hand and a racial rather than cultural conception of Germanness on the other. Displaced from the central social and cultural position they had come to occupy, the members of the "postliberal" Kafka generation were dazzlingly productive and original, far out of proportion to their numbers. Seeking a relationship between ideological crisis and cultural innovation, Spector observes the emergence of new forms of territoriality.
He identifies three fundamental areas of cultural inventiveness related to this Prague circle's political and cultural dilemma. One was Expressionism, a revolt against all limits and boundaries, the second was a spiritual form of Zionism incorporating a novel approach to Jewish identity that seems to have been at odds with the pragmatic establishment of a Jewish state, and the third was a sort of cultural no-man's-land in which translation and mediation took the place of "territory." Spector's investigation of these areas shows that the intensely particular, idiosyncratic experience of German-speaking Jews in Prague allows access to much broader and more general conditions of modernity. Combining theoretical sophistication with a refreshingly original and readable style, Prague Territories illuminates some early signs of a contemporary crisis from which we have not yet emerged.
Customer Reviews:
gregor samsa.......2000-05-06
A well documented and beautifully written book on the jewish writers, known as the prague circle, at the beginning of the twentieth century. It captures their identity struggle in a political and cultural prague. Spector gives his readers a treat by unmasking an enigmatic Kafka. We are able to perhaps know a more tender man behind the desk. We can now imagine how Gregor's creator felt. This alone was worth waiting for.
a different reading of kafka.......2000-04-24
Spector does a brilliant job in reading Kafka together with the other members of what he calls as the Prague circle. The book is challenging to read and it requires a certain level of acquintenance with the field and some German perhaps. In any case, it gives you a different perspective to understand the cirisis within the Prague circle to which Kafka is also included. Territory, territorialization, reterritorialization and deterritorialization cna be considered as the key processes one must understand in reading the book. Even though it seems somewhat consfusing from this Spector eloquently argues and proves his thesis.
Book Description
A lively and accessible history of Modernism, The First Moderns is filled with portraits of genius, and intellectual breakthroughs, that richly evoke the fin-de-siècle atmosphere of Paris, Vienna, St. Louis, and St. Petersburg. William Everdell offers readers an invigorating look at the unfolding of an age.
"This exceptionally wide-ranging history is chock-a-block with anecdotes, factoids, odd juxtapositions, and useful insights. Most impressive. . . . For anyone interested in learning about late 19th- and early 20th- century imaginative thought, this engagingly written book is a good place to start."—Washington Post Book World
"The First Moderns brilliantly maps the beginning of a path at whose end loom as many diasporas as there are men."—Frederic Morton, The Los Angeles Times Book Review
"In this truly exciting study of the origins of modernist thought, poet and teacher Everdell roams freely across disciplinary lines. . . . A brilliant book that will prove useful to scholars and generalists for years to come; enthusiastically recommended."—Library Journal, starred review
"Everdell has performed a rare service for his readers. Dispelling much of the current nonsense about 'postmodernism,' this book belongs on the very short list of profound works of cultural analysis."—Booklist
"Innovative and impressive . . . [Everdell] has written a marvelous, erudite, and readable study."-Mark Bevir, Spectator
"A richly eclectic history of the dawn of a new era in painting, music, literature, mathematics, physics, genetics, neuroscience, psychiatry and philosophy."—Margaret Wertheim, New Scientist
"[Everdell] has himself recombined the parts of our era's intellectual history in new and startling ways, shedding light for which the reader of The First Moderns will be eternally grateful."—Hugh Kenner, The New York Times Book Review
"Everdell shows how the idea of "modernity" arose before the First World War by telling the stories of heroes such as T. S. Eliot, Max Planck, and Georges Serault with such a lively eye for detail, irony, and ambiance that you feel as if you're reliving those miraculous years."—Jon Spayde, Utne Reader
Customer Reviews:
A stunning accomplishment.......2003-09-01
In an age when professional historians write only "micro-history," and when it is considered in bad-taste to find large themes in history, Everdell's great synthetic work is bracingly bold, ambitious and brilliant. Canvassing the first years of the twentieth century, he finds surprising connections between new, modernist mathematics, science, music, art and philosophy. I didn't always agree with his interpretation, but the book challenged and cajolled me, and now, two years after I first read it, I doubt that a week goes by when I don't find myself thinking about it, disputing it in my mind, often consulting it. This is a very, very good book: Everdell should be thanked for his wisdom and -- odd as this may sound -- for his courage.
overdue survey of intellectual history.......2003-05-14
Books like these are hard to find. Everdell has attempted something ambitious and difficult: to situate some of the most influential and fascinating cultural figures of modernism in vivid historical context. The result is a rich tapestry whose warp and woof includes innovators from both the arts and sciences. A book which treated only one or the other would have been interesting in its own right, but Everdell went for broke by insisting that the modernist climate is best understood by showing the wide-spread cultural cross-pollination characteristic of the time.
This book is one of the few gems of intellectual history that tries and succeeds in recreating the cultural atmosphere at the turn of the century. Some vignettes here are naturally better than others (the chapter on Strindberg is not to be missed!), but the thesis that ties them all together is strong and sound, so the book works as a brilliant study of the modernist impulse.
At a time when boundaries between academic disciplines are starting to give way to new and exciting discourses, Everdell's book proves to be a timely contribution to this budding trend.
Everdell loves what he studies and it shows.
A comprehensive accomplishment.......2002-10-15
As a "general reader" I have to take issue with the reviewer from Cambridge. The advantage of a book is that, where discussion gets too particular or specialized, one may content oneself with the general idea--in this case, without penalty. Everdell's grasp of fields as diverse as mathematics and painting may try the expertise of all but a few specialists, but his unifying theses will not. And this is more than a work of "intellectual" history: the author deals with the practices and discoveries of various forms or art and science and avoids the trap of their a priori reduction to intellectual principles.
Competent but lacks punch.......1999-06-25
Everdell does a competent job of arranging what is essentially a series of essays on a variety of Modernist thinkers. Unfortunately, I believe his book is too specific for the general reader and does too little with covered ground to interest the scholar. By focusing on the person rather than the subject, the book fails to say much when taken as a whole. Everdell gets bogged in the minutia of each thinkers' work without really exploring the connections between them and this prevents him from breaking new ground on the broader historical understanding of Modernism. In the end, a lamentable flaw but not a fatal one and for the reader somewhere between generalist and scholar, this book should offer something of interest.
A book for our time--excellent........1998-10-01
In a time of vulgar relativism and particularism,in which "postmodernist" ideas increasingly influence not only intellectual but also popular culture, Everdell brings us back to a consideration of the period to which postmodernism putatively reacts -- i.e., modernism. Much, of course, has been written about modernism, but Everdell's ideas are much more comprehensive and solidly argued than almost any others I have read. Intellectual history is a daring (and sometimes dangerous) enterprise, but one that is critical for understanding what we think and why. Everdell's book is a model of the genre -- learned, thoughtful, innovative, witty, and clear.

Customer Reviews:
Definitely for BEGINNERS............2001-12-25
I bought this book in order to find "new" and "unique" braids for my daughters hair. I was disappointed when it arrived. It really only contains instructions for common braids that I assume most are familiar with. I suppose my expectations were too high. This would be a good choice for someone who has never braided. The instructions are easy to understand, the photos are clear and detailed. If you are already familiar with a simple 3 strand braid and a french braid, don't bother purchasing this book. The other braids are just simple variations of the above mentioned.
Bad Book.......2001-06-11
This book said it would teach me everything I needed to knowabout hair braiding. Boy, was I wrong? Thanks to this ... book my sister (the one whose hair I braided following the instructions in this book) now has horrible knots in her hair that won't come out. Tomorrow mom is taking her to the salon so they can cut them all out. My sis's hair is going to have to be cut like all short. Thanks ... person for making me feel bad about ruining my sis's hair because you wrote [this]... book!!!
A Great Little Book.......1999-09-19
This is a great little book either for kids, or for kids and their moms, who want to try some new things with their hair. The book is loaded with photos and simple, clear instructional diagrams (all in color), which makes it GREAT for beginners. Most of the styles are fairly simple, but there are a couple that are more challenging, one which even reccomends an extra person to help hold some of the hair! The styles included are: Simple Braids, "Hippie" Braids (which incorporate embroidery floss), The Top Knot, Knotted Bunches, simple braids incorporating cords and ribbons, Princess Styles, Crossover Braids, Six Braids, Flipovers, Braids for shorter hair, Mini Braids, French Braids (both standard and "inside-out"), Crown braiding, The Five-strand Braid (very cool, I thought), The Rope Braid, and last, The Fishtail Braids (The single being exceptionally attractive). This book is perfect for people who are just getting started with styling hair.
