4 out of 5 stars Definitely worth exploring, despite its new agey connotations!.......2006-08-17

I have bought - & perused - this book about five or six years ago. I have found it on my bookshelf recently while sorting out my personal library.

Despite its new agey connotations, I find this book to be interesting as well as practical for its intent & purpose. The author tells how to engage your intuition or inner knowing to guide you in conceiving & achieving your dreams.

'Conceiving' takes artful imagination & intuitive processing on your part, while 'achieving' requires systematic planning & disciplined execution on your part. Without both working synergistically, you will often find that goal setting becomes an inner battle against imposing demands all the time.

This book has less than 100 pages, with twelve short chapters. Within each chapter, the paragraphs under each sub-heading are generally crisp & succinct. Hence, reading the book is a breeze!

I would have expected the author to include some form of goal setting sheets in the book. These would help the reader to integrate his/her intuitive wisdom with a pragmatic approach to goal setting. This would have made the book particularly more palatable to those readers who are more logically oriented.

I would like to add that the author is a mainstream psychologist/counsellor with obviously a new age slant. However, she has written many good books & I own many of them, including 'The Way of the Ronin', 'Maverick as Master in the Workplace' (my first book/audio from the author), 'Overcoming Job Burnout', 'Preventing Job Burnout', 'Beating Job Burnout', 'Finding a Path with A Heart', 'From Conflict to Cooperation', 'Turning Around' & 'Brain Boosters'.

On the whole, this book is definitely worth exploring. My final advice to readers: Read it with an open mind! It would have gotten a rating of 5 from me if the goal setting forms have been included in the book in the first place.

4 out of 5 stars A book for the rest of us.......2000-07-24

A review from NAPRA Review, May/June 2000 (Copyright: 2000, NAPRA Review)

This is a very forgiving book for those of use who "color outside the lines"! The description of high-performance people (perhaps more familiar as "over-achievers") identifies the difference between the wannabe and the can-do with a precision that's impressive. Covering many facets of goal-setting, Potter helps the reader understand how intuition works, the two kinds of motivation, what we do when we "get there," and plenty of foibles and traps we set to talk ourselves out of getting what we want. This is definitely a boo for "the rest of us," deftly explaining how much negativity exists in our cultural system: studying not to fail, working hard to not lose your job, etc. Once again we gain understanding of how much energy we spend avoiding rather than moving towards our goals, we are able to turn our lives around for the better. No doubt about it, achieving goals takes organization, discipline, and a lot of chutzpah, and this book is the fundamental aid to harnessing those valuable traits. -TJE

    Book Description

This pathbreaking text develops a seminal theory and discipline of international public finance, for the first time advancing public economics into the international arena. Offering a new post-Cold War approach that combines support for development, the environment, and international peacekeeping, it proposes an original system of global cooperation, resource allocation, taxation, and financing, focusing on the global commons and conflicts between environmental concerns and the economic needs of developing nations. Written to appeal to students at many levels, the book synthesizes and clarifies a wide range of theoretical, historical, and practical issues. It examines the very concept of finance and traces its development through its separation into private and public spheres. It then provides an overview of public finance theory, extending the main elements of the theory into an international context, with discussions of market failures, distributional equity, the political process, and coordination and stabilization among nations. Finally, the author shows how international public finance developed into its present patchwork of voluntary contributions and oligarchic power structures, and offers instead a comprehensive, systematic approach comprising international taxation, management of the global commons to generate revenues for international use, monetary and other measures, and international institutional reform. The book's theoretical framework puts important environmental, economic, and political issues into a fresh perspective, while its practical recommendations cover important subjects usually neglected, including disputed commons such as Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, the deep ocean bed, the high seas, air space, the electromagnetic spectrum, the geostationary orbit, and the pollution of what is apparently our last frontier--outer space--with high-speed "space junk." A pioneering exploration of a topic of vital and growing concern to most of the Earth's people, International Public Finance is a basic resource for a great variety of courses in development, finance, public administration, international relations, and environmental studies.

          Book Description

          Law/Gay and Lesbian Studies

A unique, international look at the intersection of law and the most personal of rights.

Law and Sexuality brings together leading scholars from four continents to consider topics ranging from Tasmanian sodomy laws to the South African constitution, from domestic partnership in Hawaii to London's urban geographies. The authors take on some of the most pressing issues in social and legal theory and practice today: crime and criminality, partnership and families, nationality and postcolonialism, the politics of rights struggles, and globalization. Encompassing a broad spectrum of perspectives, from literary analysis and postcolonial studies to feminist, queer, and critical race theory, their analysis maps the current state of the global intersections between law and sexuality and social change.

4 out of 5 stars The Mexican revolution seen by an American on the 1930's.......1999-05-23

I think that this work by Frank Tannenbaum is a good one. Not just because is one of the fisrt studies of the Mexican Revolution, but becuase is made by an American historian. Although he made a deep reaserch, I believe that thoe book lacks some important facts, being a study of the agrarian revolution, the author doesn't make a deep review on the Zapatismo and the south revolution, which was actually the agrarian one. He does explain, somehow, what was the situation of the Indians and peons before the revolution, but I think that he focuses to much on the industrial aspect. The causes he gave for the revolution are not quite clear, it appears to me that the industrailization of Mexico was the major cause. He dedicates a whole chapter to the haciendas but at the end of the book, one gets the impression that they had really little impact on the Mexican population. The book is really focus on the impact of the revolution, how did it changed Mexico and what were the conditions of the country then. I thought that the final chapters were good, because Tannenbaum makes several reflexions on the political system and how did it faced the agrarian question, some times giving it a fast answer and others taking time to face it. Nevertheless, I thought it was good and it helps anyone that has the Mexican revolution as a reaserch subject.

                              Book Description

The next few decades are likely to witness deep environmental crises, crises we will be able to cope with only through a clear understanding of the complex, delicate system of which we are part. Fortunately, the great advances made in all fields of science since World War II make it possible to reconstruct the entire life history of the world we live in, from the Big Bang to the present, and thus to understand how the system works. This book presents a global picture of our world - how it originated, how it evolved, how it works - and provides the background necessary to assess ways to stabilize it. Although the science is rigorous and quantitative, the book is written in an informal style and is readily accessible to anyone with a knowledge of high-school algebra.

5 out of 5 stars The Text For My Dream Earth Science Course........2001-05-22

At this point in history, I teach a college preparatory course in earth science to 9th graders in northern Orange County, California. I don't have my MS [didn't finish my research or write my thesis], so I won't be teaching a basic earth science course at a junior college anytime soon. And even if the College Board okays an AP Geology course, I doubt this book will wind up on the approved text list. However, I can dream. If I could teach the senior high school level or freshman junior college level earth science course of my dreams, Planet Earth by Cesare Emiliani would be my text. This is a physical geology/earth science/earth system science book for smart students. Emiliani pulls no punches, includes lots of equations, asks open-ended questions and shows an excellent wit. All the pictures/drawings/diagrams are in black and white, so if you've got students who need lots of Kodachrome to excite them, this isn't the text for you. It's a quirky, unique text. It's not like any of the other basic earth science texts out there and bears the personal touches of its author. I read it for fun and inspiration and would definitely recommend it for the interested nonscientist. I know it's a paperback, but it is worth every penny you pay for it. Book Description

Viewed in this analysis from a statistical physics perspective, the Internet is perceived as a developing system that evolves through the addition and removal of nodes and links. This perspective permits the authors to outline the dynamical theory that can appropriately describe the Internet's macroscopic evolution. The presence of such a theoretical framework will provide a revolutionary way of enhancing the reader's understanding of the Internet's varied network processes.

These two novellas about Americans abroad combine to create one wallop of a book. As they confront the legacy of history and their own shortcomings, Prose's characters are obsessively self-aware, even narcissistically petty--just like we are. In the title story, Landau, a struggling playwright, engages in a vanity-laden struggle of wills with a charismatic Holocaust-survivor in the cafeteria of a death camp-turned-tourist-attraction during a Kafka symposium. In the second novella "Three Pigs in Five Days," Nina is sent to Paris by her boss and ex-lover to write an article about a whorehouse-turned-hotel. While there, she is plagued by the demons of her erotic past as well as the romantic ghosts of the dysfunctional relationships of dead Parisian artists and their mistresses. Always harrowing, occasionally baroque, and tinged with hilarity, Guided Tours of Hell is an early candidate for the best fiction of the year.

                                  Book Description

The less-than-innocents abroad in these short novels are Americans in Europe, involved in what turn out to be pleasure tours of hell: shocking, bewildering trips that change forever their ideas about history, reality, politics, sex -- their entire lives.

In the title novella, a third-rate American playwright named Landau attends a literary conference in Prague, where an organized group excursion to a former concentration camp degenerates into a battle of wills and an exercise in egomania and public humiliation. Nina, the heroine of the second novella, "Three Pigs in Five Days," is sent to Paris to write an article for her lover's travel journal -- a dizzying, erotic pilgrimage that forces her to see how sex has distorted her view of the world.

4 out of 5 stars A good read from an aptly named writer.......2001-05-26

I read these two novellas before I saw the other reviews here on Amazon, and its a good thing. It would have been a real shame to have been discouraged or influenced by some of the negative comments. Ms. Prose's voice is unique, her stories well structured and interesting, her characters human. I don't want to spoil these stories for anyone who has yet to read them, so I won't go into the details of the plots. This is the second book by Ms. Prose I have read (Hunters and Gatherers was first) and I am pleased to have discovered her. Paris in the winter can be a gray place, but it is still Paris. Enough said. If you enjoy well crafted, serious fiction you will enjoy these stories (how is that for a loaded sentence?)

4 out of 5 stars Three cheers for three pigs.......2001-03-11

This book contains two novellas. The first is a well-crafted study of how charismatic individuals spin history for personal gain, be it social/sexual or material. The fact that the Holocaust is the history being spun is timely and fascinating.

The second is a full length novel that has been unfairly savaged by previous reviewers for being formless, with "thin" characters, unattractive "pathetic" main character etc. etc. Anyone's entitled to his opinion, but I believe these reviewers missed the point. This is an existential story written from the perspective of a woman who is neurotically obsessed with her (older) lover. I think it's brilliantly done. Certainly we know lots of OTHER people who have been in such relationships. Do all romantic heroines have to be heroically self-assertive? What a depressingly narrow range of reader tastes if that is the case! Nina's musings as she flounders in the emotional vortex of her obsessive love for Leo are fascinating and generally close to the mark. Her character is 'thin' because love-obsessed persons are self-absorbed and have a constricted range of expression. That Prose "made Paris boring" is not a criticism, but high praise! The embarassingly simple point is that even the most attractive environment will be sterile and dully malevolent when filtered through the opaque lens of emotional dependency.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended..........2000-12-26

My Creative Writing professor recommended this book to me, and I flew right through the first of the two novellas. I think it's brilliant---it's hard enough to write about the Holocaust, but it's even harder to do it with a true sense of humor. And though the second novella isn't as strong as the first, the first is so good that I stand by the five stars I'm giving it.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than the first two reviewers say.......2000-05-26

Yes, the heroine of "Three Pigs in Five Days" is pathetic, but the wanderings of her thoughts as she lives through a hellish Paris vacation are intriguing, and the writing in this book is wry and insightful. I also thought the Paris evoked in this book was fascinating, contrary to one of the previous reviewers' comments. Prose's elegant writing style shines through, and as usual, she finds the perfect word and the perfect image time after time. If you're looking for politically correct visions of male/female relationships, don't look here. If you want characters you can admire, don't look here. I think the idea of "likeable characters" is overworked, anyway. (Incidentally, if likeable characters are important to you, the heroine in this novel is very likeable, despite her doormat tendencies.) Finally, the book is often extremely funny. I give it four rather than five stars only because I'm stingy. If you liked Blue Angel, give this one a try.

                                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-10-05

In 'Guided Tours of Hell', Prose provokes disgust at Landau and annoyance with his unreal pettiness and insecurity, somewhat interesting on its own merit. She brings up much more compelling and disturbing concepts of sensationalism and exploitation of an event like the Holocaust, which, mixed with Landau's preoccupations, make for an interesting combination. The second story was a disappointment. Any interest lingering from 'Guided Tours of Hell' disappeared once I started 'Three Pigs in Five Days'. Prose, throw us a bone! The idea of a man messing with his woman's mind is interesting for a few pages, but our heroine is too abjectly pathetic. A joyless and tiresome read.
