4 out of 5 stars An interesting approach..........2000-11-04

This book is a great read for anyone interested in the practical applications of philosophy, or even someone looking for the right spiritual answers to day-to-day work problems. Carol Osborn has taken the learnings of the ancient Chinese scripture I Ching and applied them to a hundred commonly faced modern-day work situations. The solutions presented are not quick-fix, step-by-step guides on what to do but to someone who has a little bit of faith, they can open up a lot of doors. Most importantly, they force one to think deeply about each situation and what it means in one's life. Definitely a handy book to have around.

      Book Description

Capital Account relates the story of the world's greatest investment bubble from the perspective of professional investors. The book, comprised of selected reports from Marathon Asset Management, a successful global investment firm, explains how shareholder value - the notion that companies should be run in the interests of their shareholders - became corrupted in this era of frenzied finance. Senior managers, succumbing to the lure of stock option fortunes, took to manipulating their company's earnings. Professional investors, interested only in maintaining their investment performance over the next quarter, were willing abettors. The `croupiers' of Wall Street, also know as investment bankers, whipped up the euphoria and peddled to investors superficially plausible stories, `MacGuffins', in order to generate huge fees for themselves. As a result, by the turn of the century almost the entire investment community had become fixated with chasing short-term profits at the expense of long-term returns for clients. By the end of 2002 this cynical game had ended in investment disaster- the world's stock markets having produced more than $15 trillion of losses since their peak. Yet to a large extent, the outcome was predictable to those investors who had retained a disciplined approach to investment analysis throughout the bull market. This book introduces the `capital cycle' approach to investment - an approach that brings together ideas from the fields of behavioral finance, economic theory and business analysis. Capital cycle analysis - based on the apparently simple insight that investor euphoria leads to excessive investment in the real world and subsequent poor returns for shareholders - enabled Marathon to identify at an early stage the inevitable collapse of the technology and telecoms bubble.

        Book Description

The second edition of An Introduction to Tort Law offers a clear exposition to the rapidly developing law of tort in Britain. For those coming to the subject for the first time it provides a succinct and thoughtful overview; ideal as an introduction, it will also be of use and interest to those engaged in the course or completing it, for it pulls themes together, illustrates important distinctions and provokes reflection on what has already been learnt. Many of the areas subjected to analysis and discussion are highly topical, such as the invasion of the privacy of celebrities, and liability for medical mishaps and industrial diseases. On these and many other subjects of relevance in modern society, Weir's comments act as a springboard for further study and reflection, as well as presenting an authoritative overview, enlivened by a fascinating and critical commentary, of the present situation and how we reached it. The second edition naturally includes recent developments in tort law, the most significant of which is doubtless the incorporation into English law of the European Convention on Human Rights. This has not only affected the outcome in a number of cases, but also brought about changes in our vocabulary, interpretation of enactments, and treatment of precedent, which are rather less easily documented.

This book examines the German law of torts using the comparative method, making frequent references to American, English, and French material. Completely revised and updated, it includes commentary on the tort provisions of the German Civil Code as well as English translations of leading
decisions of the German Courts. Translations of the relevant sections of the Road Traffic Act 1952 and the Strict Liability Act 1979 have also been included. Most of the cases and statutes are accompanied by explanatory notes providing parallel solutions of English and American law, making this book
an invaluable reference for practitioners and students of German and comparative law.

This detailed expositiion of concepts centering on liability-in both a legal and an everyday sense-focuses on such notions as voluntary conduct, acts, intention, negligence, and recklessness. White argues that, contrary to the interpretation taken by many who follow the Austinian tradition,
the legal and non-legal uses and understandings of these terms are the same.

                  Book Description

The English law of obligations has developed over most of the last millennium without any major discontinuity. Through this period each generation has built on the law of its predecessors, manipulating it so as to avoid its more inconvenient consequences and adapting it piecemeal to social and economic changes. Sometimes fragments borrowed from other jurisdiction have been incorporated into the fabric of English law; from time to time ideas developed elsewhere have, at least temporarily, imposed a measure of structure on a common law otherwise messy and inherently resistant to any stable ordering. In this book David Ibbetson exposes the historical layers beneath the modern rules and principles of contract, tort, and unjust enrichment. Small-scale changes caused by lawyers successfully exploiting procedural advantages in their clients' interest are juxtaposed alongside changes caused by friction along the boundaries of these principal legal categories; fossilized remnants of old doctrines jostle with newer ideas in a state of half-consistent tension; loose-knit rules of equity developed in the Chancery infiltrate themselves into more tightly controlled Common law structures. The result is a system shot through with inconsistencies and illogicalities, but with the resilience to adapt as necessary to take account of shifting pressures and changing circumstances.

The principal concern of the law of torts is to repair accident losses. but its role has altered over the years as a result of such factors as the wider use of private and liability insurance. This completely revised and updated edition looks at the effect of these changes on the law, and an
entirely new chapter compares tort with no-fault compensation in the light of accepted accident compensation policies.

                                      Book Description

It was one of Thoreau's great rules of life that any pond, or lake, or stream contains the reflections of the entire world within it--that one can see and know and feel more at one's own doorstep than hurried travels will ever reveal in the far corners of the earth. A place for sensing the wonder of the world could be any place, for all have shared a common journey that has made the earth our home. To listen from any spot is to hear the quiet echoes of a billion cycles around the sun. In A Place on the Glacial Till, Thomas Fairchild Sherman writes about the history of the life and land around his long-time home in Oberlin, Ohio, offering a quiet message that speaks to us wherever we are: that all time and nature abide within the rocks and soil, with connections, beauty, and meaning as deep as history and as broad as human understanding. The area surrounding Oberlin has a rich and varied past, and Sherman weaves together old and new findings from geology, archeology, and ecology to remind us of its elemental roots. Over the millennia this region of north central Ohio has been a barren, glacier-covered land mass; a sea bed teeming with marine life; the homeland of the Adena, Hopewell, and Erie peoples; a part of the Connecticut Western Reserve; and the home of a small, distinguished college dedicated to music and the arts and sciences. The land today holds all the wildernesses of its past, and all the dreams and aspirations of those who have lived upon it. Reminiscent of the meditative prose of Annie Dillard and the environmental writing of John McPhee, A Place on the Glacial Till recalls a multitude of studies of time and nature and joins them in a new appreciation of the land and its meaning for our lives.

5 out of 5 stars The best bioregional biography I've seen.......1999-10-08

Sherman's excellent book was recommended to me by a colleague while I was preparing to teach a college course in bioregional biographies, and it is clearly the best I've seen. His rendering of geological, botanical, and biological information is both lucid and lyrical, and--unlike David Raines Wallace, whose Klamath Knot is also a wonderful model of this sort of writing--Sherman needs no incidental narrative device to hold the layers of deep history together. Mr. Sherman is a gifted writer and naturalist, and A Place on the Glacial Till is clearly a classic of natural history writing.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful use of language pulls the reader into nature.......1998-12-31

The author manages to make his various topics (glaciers and their effects on our world here in Ohio, development of flora and fauna of the region through history, etc.)very accessible to the lay person. He has a sense of humour about nature and a beautifully descriptive eye.

                                            Book Description

Glacial deposits provide a long-term record of climate and sea level changes on Earth. Detailed study of sedimentary rocks deposited during and immediately after glacial episodes is paramount to accurate palaeoclimatic reconstructions and for our understanding of global climatic and eustatic changes. This book presents new information and interpretations of the ancient glacial record, looking in particular at the Late Proterozoic and Late Paleozoic eras. The influence of global tectonics on the origins and distribution of ice masses and the character of glacial deposits through geologic time is emphasised. Sequence stratigraphic techniques are applied to glaciogenic successions, and explanations for possible low-latitude glaciation during the Late Proterozoic era and the association of carbonate deposits with glaciogenic rocks are put forward. Early interglacial conditions, represented by dark grey mudrocks and ice keel scour features are discussed. These studies, from key workers in International Geological Correlation Program Project 260, will aid the understanding of the Earth's climatic history.

                                              Book Description

Geomorphology: A Canadian Perspective is a comprehensive text designed for use by undergraduate students at a variety of levels. Although it has a very strong emphasis on Canadian topics and examples, the material is not exclusively Canadian. This includes coverage of coral, mangrove, and tropical karst for example. Some parts of the book may be too advanced for some students at the introductory and service course levels, but they will be useful to students and instructors at more advanced levels, and to those instructors who want to expose undergraduates to the scientific aspects of process geomorphology at the junior levels. An extensive glossary explains the meaning of terms that may be unfamiliar to the beginning students, while providing a text for the more experienced reader that is not burdened with too many definitions. There is also a fairly lengthy list of references at the back of the book, with a strong bias to more recent work.
