Book Description
Continuing the four goals from the first edition, i.e. helping students to make good financial decisions, providing a solid text for the introductory MBA course, motivating students by demonstrating finance is relevant and interesting, and presenting the material clearly, this Tenth Edition promises to be the best yet. Written by a highly-acclaimed, best selling, author team, this text remains the only MBA-level text to present a balance of financial theory and applications.
Customer Reviews:
Since New Edition is available - not used much now.......2007-09-13
although I got one in good shape. Did not get the CD i was promised.
Find another finance book.......2004-07-20
This book is a nightmare; thoroughly confusing. Authors do not know how to teach! Brigham & Company will take 30 pages to explain a concept that can be done in 2 pages. I used this book for my finance class for my MBA; this one is not worth the money or your time.
Excellent Textbook. Retain After Graduation as Reference.......2003-11-01
As an MBA student, I have now had the opportunity to study different finance books. This is undoubtedly the best. The CD rom resources are excellent. I will certainly retain this book for refence after graduation.
Excellent!.......2003-09-27
This is no corporate finance for dummies book. So, don't expect to have "fun" with it. However, on a graduate level the book is near perfect. I especially appreciate its treatment of case studies - carrying the same case study from chapter to chapter where appropriate. There is a CDROM that contains, among other things, very useful and practical Excel templates for each chapter. The authors also provide foot notes that I encourage you to read. Many of them give the author's opinion of how the subject works in the real world verses the academic world. If you are the type that learns best by knowing the big picture first, make sure you get the Study Guide too.
My only beef with this text is in the index, which is woefully lacking -- rendering it less useful as a research source.
Terrible Book.......2003-09-16
This book is terrible. I am an educated person, but it seems that your undergrad must be in finance in order to get any use out of it. If you are required to use this book for your graduate finance class (and you don't have a degree in finance), please invest in the study guide. It will help you a great deal.

Book Description
Leading researchers in the area of the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe contributed to Exobiology: Matter, Energy, and Information in the Origin and Evolution of Life in the Universe. This volume provides a review of this interdisciplinary field. In 50 chapters many aspects that contribute to exobiology are reviewed by 90 authors. These include: historical perspective of biological evolution; cultural aspects of exobiology, cosmic, chemical and biological evolution, molecular biology, geochronology, biogeochemistry, biogeology, and planetology. Some of the current missions are discussed. Other subjects in the frontier of exobiology are reviewed, such as the search for planets outside the solar system, and the possible manifestation of intelligence in those new potential environments. The SETI research effort is well represented in this general overview of exobiology. This book is the proceedings of the Fifth Trieste Conference on Chemical Evolution that took place in September 1997. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam who suggested the initiation of the Trieste conferences on chemical evolution and the origin of life. Audience: Graduate students and researchers in the many areas of basic, earth, and life sciences that contribute to the study of chemical evolution and the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe.

Customer Reviews:
A great , wonderful work of cooperation.......2007-02-07
Back in 1970, I had a geology class given by a talented teacher; I then started to love that wonderful field for itself. Having now a work to do over the years to come, in which geology plays a significant part, I had the following choice for renewing and extending knowledge: buying this costly encyclopedia, or buying a book on tectonics, one on petrology... The second alternative would have been cheaper, but the encyclopedia gives a more rounded out view of the field, as relevant, and more importantly, as delocalized over the whole planet (this is no US-centered manual).
Geology has the privilege to peer deeply over our dual foundations:
-- physical, as the place we live on, has been shaped by a long, complex tectonic history, and as the rocks now present have been previously ejected, deposited, folded, metamorphosed, wheathered and perhaps re-deposited again...
-- biological, as life has unfolded from bacteria / cyanobacteria, all the way up to flowering plants and primates.
Geologists are admirably keen observers of natural evidences: this is exemplified on each page. They seek to integrate together the many dimensions of space, as they intercross with the multitude of temporal cycles concerning the 3 kingdoms in nature: mineral, vegetal, and animal (and now human as well). Therefore as physical, chemical, biological, and let us say also, geographical (even astronomical) processes are together at play, only a work of such wide inclusiveness and expertise as this encyclopedia can propose and give the proper food, to our astonished mind, in learning to build such a synthetic picture.
Of course the pursuit of such a vision demands quite a lot of work on our part, and the 5 volumes get moved quite a lot on more than one table! In this the comprehensive, detailed index of the 5th volume is invaluable: no geological dictionary that I know of, gives references to all the main tectonic formations of the world, and this can otherwise be quite painful for the non-professional. These names, that thus also refer to geographical locations, have an invaluable presence in this index.
In a future edition:
* the beautiful geological maps (mostly in color) of the continental (or national in some cases) configurations would definitely be heightened in value by showing on their margins, at no greater cost it seems, the rough locations of latitudes and longitudes, so that we may spontaneously use a geographical atlas for comparison with more accuracy.
* In mineralogy, it is simply a shame that the chart of the 32 three dimensional crystallographic point groups of symmetry is not displayed: this indeed depicts -excluding the exceptional chemicals capable of been built into crystals, while inhering the 5-fold symmetry-- the mathematical foundation upon which all minerals are ideally being structured into an absolute spatial order... The mineral kingdom is the only one for which such an essential order has been discovered, one that is shared by nearly all minerals on earth (and at least partly beyond).
With these books, I will marvel for the rest of my life....

Customer Reviews:
a towering figure in modern physics.......2005-03-01
An outstanding collection of essays, written over 50 years, by one of the giants of twentieth century physics. Hans Bethe won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on stellar evolution. He is perhaps the most senior figure from the Manhattan Project still living.
The essays are nontechnical, and mostly discuss the nuclear arms race. Many were cowritten with other prominent scientists, like Richard Garwin. These essays span the Cold War, and most have a common theme of how to avoid a nuclear war.
The book concludes with essays by Bethe on other prominent physicists that he has known. Freeman Dyson. J Robert Oppenheimer. Richard Feynman [who got his PhD from Bethe]. The essay on Feynman echoes what Bethe said in a memorial lecture for Feynman, given at Los Alamos in 1988, shortly after Feynman's death. [I was fortunate to be present at the latter lecture.]

George Plimpton, that most peripatetic of sporting literati, takes the reins on the latest edition of sportswriting's annual all-star team, and lets these thoroughbreds run. As usual, the smart money is on Roger Angell, Rick Reilly, David Remnick, and Tom Boswell, all of whom are represented, and long-shot David Halberstam makes his comeback with a fascinating profile of a fencer. But the roses go to the real derby winner in this year's group, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Ford for his long, lyrical, sometimes funny, sometimes profound meditation from Sports Afield on, of all thought-provoking arenas, hunting with his wife.

A Treasure of Great Writing About Sports.......2003-04-28
The 1997 edition of "The Best American Sports Writing" has plenty of moments that will enthrall avid sports fans and even those less avid who merely like a good story. The series is a national treasure, which collects the best sports related writing every year and puts it into a single easy-to-read volume. The sports included run the gamut from the traditional team sports of baseball and football to more extreme examples like mountaineering. The main requirement for inclusion is great writing, and that's wht this series delivers consistently.
The best articles in the 1997 edition include New Yorker editor David Remnick's hilarous book review of Dennis Rodman's "Bad As I Wanna Be," Rick Reilly's revealing (and revolting) interview with former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott, Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air," the Outside Magazine piece that later became a runaway bestselling book, Gary Smith's account of how Tiger Woods destiny was largely predetermined by his father, and Padgett Powell's biography of an American arm wrestling champion. As always, the quality of the reporting means that even if you have only a margainal interest in the sport described, you'll still find it entertaining.
Overall, another fine entry in an outstanding series.
An American Treasure.......2003-04-28
The 2000 edition of "The Best American Sports Writing" has plenty of moments that will enthrall avid sports fans and even those less avid who merely like a good story.
The best articles in the 2000 edition include Jeff Macgreggor's disturbing account of the violence that permeats Candian youth league hockey, Robert Hubert's sad biographical piece on Joe DiMaggio's only son, Michael Finkel's story about the cult of extreme marathoning, Allison Glock's entertaining biography of Robbie Knievel, and Charles Sprawson's tale of the feats of extreme swimmers. As always, the quality of the reporting means that even if you have only a margainal interest in the sport described, you'll still find it entertaining.
Overall, another fine entry in an outstanding series.
Great series that's focusing more on alternative sports.......2000-12-30
Many readers may take issue with the fact that this series represents sportswriting at its best. THe editor, Dick SCHaap is really a hack writer, at best. I'm sure there are many other examples of fine sportswriting out there. The series seems to be making efforts to dig up newer, alternative writers who often become as much a part of the story as what they are writing about, though no one will do that better than Hunter THompson! The strength of this series is that its increasingly focusing on lesser known or alternative sports, or just on activities that are beyond our normal view of what constitutes recreation. There are pieces on cockfighting, long-distance swimming, poker playing, bullriding, ultra-running, and guns. In fact, there are only a few pieces of writing on the big 4 sports of football, baseball, hockey and basketball. While this may turn off many a reader who prefers to read about their larger than life heroes, to me its a strength in that we get to read about people who are just as dedicated to their craft (however obscure), perhaps more so, than those athletes in the well known sports. But just when we get comfortable with a new sport, there will be a piece written totally tongue-in-cheek, such as the one by Garirison Keillor. I've read the books in the series going back a number of years and the series seems to be going more and more in this direction. This to me is its appeal, though those of you who are fans of the more conventional sports may take issue. Its not the best of American Sportswriting, but is among the most diverse of American sports writing. Many of the pieces were interesting enough to make me wish there was more to read on the event or sport, or that I could find a longer version of the story by the same author. Looking forward to next year's book.
Sour Mash.......2000-12-07
Schaap, who worked under Jimmy Breslin and Roger Kahn, could write with neither but he hustled better than either. His credentials: ghost writng and tv pap, sometimes nasty. Stout's work is about as big league as the home town he lists, Uxbridge, Mass. Anyone can pick a couple, three nice pieces, but this should not be done by these fellers. They are semi-qualified, too much on the make. Replace them with, say Bill Dwyre, the great Sports Editor of the LA Times, and John Cherwa, exec sports editor of the Chicago Tribune and Pete Carrey, of SI. Personally -- I am a clinical shrink who loves sports -- I wish professional standards were applied to any collection called best.
Best of the series.......2000-11-14
A mix of extremely entertaining stories. Much more about life than about sports this book gives an insight into many interesting personalities in obscure sports. In my opinion the best in the series "Best Sports Writing", not so much for excellent writing but the contents of most of the stories.
Customer Reviews:
A great collection.......2005-02-08
This edition is a wonderful collection of exciting creative nonfiction that pushes the boundaries of what we call the "essay." Anyone who thinks essays are boring should read "The Gangster We're All Looking For" and "The Fourth State of Matter" because these are anything but. If only more collections included beautiful and powerful work like this.
'97 Was A Vintage Year for Essays.......2000-05-23
The 1997 Best American Essays is probably my favorite volume in the Best American Essay series. Ian Frazier did a superb job in selecting the essays in the volume. For anyone who is looking for satisfying essays to read, this volume would be the ideal one to choose. A reason perhaps why the essays were selected to be "the best" is that each one touches upon a common cord that readers can easily empathize with. Family, memory, history, and politics are the most obvious underlying themes that run through each essays that I picked up on. My favorite essays included: Hilton Als's "Notes on My Mother," Verlyn Klinkenborg's "We Are Still Only Human," Luc Sante's "Living In Tongues," and "Charles Simic's "Dinner at Uncle Boris's." The other essays are all equaly great.
The best literary bang for your buck.......1999-03-15
I used to subscribe to Granta, New Yorker, Double Take, The Sun and other magazines but I found I really didn't have time for all of them. Best American Essays provides many of the same great reads in one volume. In the 1997 issue I particularly enjoyed Joy Williams "The Case Against Babies", and Paul Sheehan's essay "My Habit" is sheer genius. Each writing is wonderful though, and I often enjoy reading other works by the authors after I am introduced to their talents through the "Best Essays" series.
Book Description
Anchor Books proudly launches an annual essay series. Acclaimed essayist Phillip Lopate has selected the most surprising, important, and exquisite pieces published during the last twelve months. Bringing together materials from both periodicals and books, The Anchor Essay Annual 1997 also includes essays never before published, as well as translations from abroad. The result is as rich and unique as it is cosmopolitan.
In her brilliantly frank "Revelation", Mary Gaitskill recounts the religious epiphany that changed her life. Hilton Als explores the "Negressity" of his soul in "My Pin-Up". In his dazzling "The Laying Off of Desire", Jean Baudrillard sets forth a flamboyant dissection of human sexuality. Hubert Butler ruminates on the stunted life of his handicapped grandchild in "Little K." We relive the glories and disappointments of the Borscht Belt in Vivian Gornick's evocative group portrait, "The Catskills Remembered". And we ride a rollercoaster of cultural insight in Daniel Harris's "A Psychosexual History of the Homosexual Body". A a whole, this superb collection is a heady cocktail indeed.
All of this exciting new work is placed in context with an illuminating introduction from Phillip Lopate, "the house authority on the genre and its greatest practitioner" (Washington Times). With generous selections from over twenty-five writers from around the world, The Anchor Essay Annual 1997 is the first in what is sure to become a series widely anticipated and highly acclaimed, every October, for years to come.
