Excellent Book - Great Insights.......2002-02-26
This is a great story of a remarkable business turnaround. Imlay gives great anecdotal examples of business fundamentals. If you want to be entertained and informed, buy it. It is required reading for all our managers.
A must read for anyone caring about people AND business........1999-05-13
John Imlay has written a compelling and motivating book that has the power to change how you think of business and the people, the metaphorical tigers, who hunt for success through the business jungle. And in the process, bring food back to their corporate den. A very human philosophy of business revealed through our most primal of instincts. Anyone interested in being successful in business, from students to management, should read this book.

Book Description
"With the publication of this volume, knowledge and understanding of the practices of delivering micro-credit reach a new level of consolidation, and the stage is set for important further steps." -- from the Foreword by Richard P. Taub, University of Chicago
Microfinance was pioneered in the developing world as the lending of small amounts of money to entrepreneurs who lacked the kinds of credentials and collateral demanded by banks. Similar practices spread from the developing to the developed world, reversing the usual direction of innovation, and today several hundred microfinance institutions are operating in the United States.
Replicating Microfinace in the United States reviews experiences in both developing and industrialized countries and extends the applications of microlending beyond enterprise to consumer finance, housing finance, and community development finance, concentrating especially on previously underserved households and their communities.
Contributors include Nitin Bhatt, Robert M. Buckley, Bruce Ferguson, Elinor Haider, Chi-kan Richard Hung, Sally R. Merrill, Jonathan Morduch, Gary Painter, Sohini Sarkar, Mark Schreiner, Lisa Servon, Ayse Can Talen, Shui-Yan Tang, Kenneth Temkin, Andres Vinelli, J. D. Von Pischke and Marc A. Weiss.
Replicating Microfinance in the United States is based on papers commissioned by the Fannie Mae Foundation and findings from an October 2001 conference jointly held by the Fannie Mae Foundation and Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.

A thoughtful and well researched volume........1998-08-28
This book is a must read for any person who would desire to understand the importance of Law and particularly for the Christian. John begins with a discussion of how God's Law, as recorded in the pages of the Bible in the Old and New Testament and Creation, is the only proper basis for Man's laws. He also discusses how God's Law gives authority to and limits the laws of men and how to apply that law to everyday situations of today.
Further, John discuses how the American Constitution reflected these ideas and how far we have departed from the precepts written therein. Though it may sound simplistic to many, John argues strongly that the majority of our present day problems can be traced directly to that departure.
This book would be helpful for the person who professes no particular religious preference to better understand how the Chrisian "should" think about and act toward the Law. I say how the Christian "should" think because sadly in our day far to many people who claim to be, and many that are, Christians have forgotten how to "think" let alone act as a Christian should.

Book Description
The dramatic increases in population and living standards during the twentieth century have led to serious concerns over the sustainability and environmental impact of modern agriculture. This textbook will enable students from a broad range of backgrounds to gain a basic scientific understanding of the processes which define the ecology of plant production. The book begins with a consideration of global issues. This is followed by a series of chapters on the relationship between plant production and the environment; topics include ecological principles, the importance of genetic manipulation and diversity, historical development of agricultural ecosystems and yield increases, biophysical limits of productivity, the soil-plant relationship, and water requirements. The second section then considers the physical environment that influences plant production; it examines the effects of solar radiation, temperature, weather, and atmospheric gases. This book is essential reading for students of agronomy, plant science, ecology and environmental biology and for others with an interest in the sustainability of plant production and its associated environmental considerations.

Fundamentals of Atmospheric Modeling

Book Description
Updated and revised, this highly successful text details the basic chemical principles required for modern studies of atmospheres, oceans, and Earth and planetary systems. This completely accessible introduction allows undergraduate and graduate students with little formal training in chemistry to grasp such fundamental concepts as chemical equilibria, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, solution chemistry, acid and base chemistry, oxidation-reduction reactions, and photochemistry. In the companion volume Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry (also to be published in May 2000), Peter Hobbs details atmospheric chemistry itself, including its applications to air pollution, acid rain, the ozone hole, and climate change. Together these two books offer an ideal introduction to atmospheric chemistry for a variety of disciplines.

Book Description
Manhattan, the coldest night of the year -- six best friends rush to attend a celebration. Blown by wind and snow, the women arrive flushed, each caught in midadventure....
Tonight's the night of nights -- to rejoice in a new lover, leave an unfaithful husband, or decide to have a baby on one's own. These "six in the city" profes-sional women fight for their female choices. Sparks and zingers fly across the table....Love lives, secrets, and friendships go up in candle flame.
Who will win -- the romantics or the realists? How can working women triumph in such trying times? While the cell phones chime and the biological clocks rewind, the friends enact a timeless ceremony. Here is our urban "friends-as-family" generation -- Beautiful Bodies is a dazzling comedy of manners in the grand tradition of Dorothy Parker and Mary McCarthy.
Customer Reviews:
Rejoices in the spirit of tomorrow .......2006-10-16
A very discussable sliver of six youthful-but-getting-old women. The technique Cunningham employs- treating each woman as if each were of equal importance, going through every heroine's internal monologue with delicate separation while chronologically moving forward, since each voice represents a different time in the evening, (no two voices represent the same hour in the evening) though they all plough forward- works very well. What's impressive is that she is able to use this method with enough mastery that the tapestry is without bumps as the characters neither re-enter the past nor skip forward. It is like musical counterpoint where the individuality succeeds without "doubling voices" nor compromising the sound of the whole collective idea. Among Cunningham's indictment of the world of romance comes the strains of pain, the fear of not being wanted anymore. Cunningham magically hones in on the girls suspicions; how each is fading away without having had kids or experienced love for longer than a night. she sets this up against Claire, who, despite the disapproval of Martha/her parents, is conspiring to live life on romantic, buddhist terms. My favorite thing about Cunningham's Beautiful Bodies is the way she has a backdrop of larger mounting conflicts while the characters, having a dinner, play out a drama of less powerful disputes. Between the major problems that I wanted to see resolved and the lesser problems that engaged me as directly as a soap opera on TV, my interest level never strayed or was misplaced, not even for a moment.
It also goes without saying that Cunningham manages to write with a sharp eye for the most lyrical choices.
The only confusion I had was with Martha- with her generosity I didn't understand why the group hated her so much, was so resolved to unmoor her. Cunningham didn't offer many reasons for why they might have liked her in the beginning since everything she did, even with the best intentions, only annoyed them. I wanted to read more chapters from Martha... There was obviously more depth to her character than was investigated in the scenes.
It has the lightness of "The Hours" without the dark existential poison that I find accompanies such types of modern day (What I call "poison candy") books. Since we find out of our characters worst flaw from our characters themselves, the exploration of emptiness and modern day pointless loneliness doesn't feel quite so terrifying. Even though our characters each grapple with romantic loss, they are able to rejoice in the spirit of what tomorrow brings as Claire's new baby and delight in a one-night-stand enchants them all.
Also raises the issues that many women in their thirties have to face. Disappointment, men having affairs, terminal loneliness, financial scarcity, and even the kind of female cattiness which is still there among the best of friends.
I couldn't even finish this book!.......2006-08-03
I rarely stop reading a book after I have started it, especially if I get more than half way through it. I stopped reading this book after I had read more than half of it. The entire first half of the book is just long, drawn out character descriptions and not much plot. I am giving it two stars instead of one for the mere fact that one of the reasons it may have been difficult for me to get into the book was because I would read it too sporadically and in small doses because I was very busy at the time. Cunningham's novel, "Dreams of Rescue" is much better.
Very Enjoying Read.......2005-04-11
This was a book that i found to be a very enjoying, easy read. It shows the importance of having girl friends, and takes you through each and every characters world. This is a nice summer read that will make you wanting more. Five stars to Laura Shaine Cunningham!
boring.......2004-12-29
Very slow moving, overall not a very interesting story.I was expecting something more chic lit and funny and it wasn't that at all.
Great female friends.......2004-11-07
Laura Shaine Cunningham explores the immense power and importance of female friendship. Friends truly are the family you choose! Cunningham's writing is funny, honest, and cuts straight to the heart.

Book Description
This well documented book cronicals a culturally distinct group of Shoshone mountain dwellers who peopled the headwaters of the Contintal Divide in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming from pre-european history well into the nineteenth century. They existed in small independent groups at the edge of ecological extremes (over 7000 feet to over 10,000 feet), following the mountain sheep through the seasons.

Sentinels of a Little-Known Culture.......2002-09-17
Tony Taylor's ALPINE SENTINELS is a direct, readable, and knowledgeable account of an American sub-culture that was viable for many centuries and is now gone, crowded and displaced by the westward movment of Euro-Americans. The book honors its subject.

The Middle Fork and the Sheepeater War.......2007-07-07
This book was written as a historical guide for people who may float or hike down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Of necessity its scope has been limited to sites and events close to the river.
It is not our intent to provide a guide for getting down the river. The Forest Service chart with information on river rapids has been included as an appendix merely for the convenience of some readers.
It is our earnest hope that by providing this history we may contribute in a small way to the preservation of the past, thereby fufilling a responsibility to the future. In the words of Cicero: "Not to know what ha been transacted in former times is to continue always a child."
We plead that you conscientiously refrain from removing any article or object from sites in the canyon. What may be only a souvenir to you might be of great interest to the next party. Please leave it there! Much irreparable damage has already occurred.
In light of this fact, we have deliberately avoided any mention of the numerous Indian pictograph sites along the river. Should you discover them or be guided to them, treat the stone and the ground for what they are: a valuable heritage protected by state and federal law.

Book Description
Most people are quick to note the influence that religion has had on African-American history--its help in securing the freedom of slaves and its powerful role in the subsequent struggles by blacks for civil rights. But few are aware of the role played by humanism in the black experience. This ambitious collection of writings by and about black humanists breaks new ground by demonstrating the extent to which humanism and freethought have helped to assess, explore, interpret, and substantively develop the history and ideals of black intellectualism.
Part One offers biographical sketches of such prominent black humanists as Frederick Douglass (1817-1895), an emancipated slave who became a great abolitionist and political leader; Hubert H. Harrison (1883-1927), possibly the greatest Afro-American intellectual of his time; and the revisionist historian and physicist Cheikh Anta Diop (1923-1985).
Part Two features essays by black humanists, including the American teacher and writer W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) on Christianity, and anthropologist and Harlem Renaissance novelist Zora Neale Hurston (1903-1960) on religion.
Part Three offers the views of contemporary African humanists, including Emmanuel Kofi Mensah and Freda Amakye Ansah, on African religion, education, and women's issues.
Part Four contains interviews conducted by Norm R. Allen, Jr., on the subjects of black humanist activism, the Afroasiatic roots of classical civilization, and the Harlem Renaissance.
Included are contributions by: Freda Amakye Ansah, Martin G. Bernal, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Michel Fabre, Charles W. Faulkner, Leonard Harris, David Howard-Pitney, Norman Hill, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Ishmael Jaffree, Mike McBryde, Claude McKay, Emmanuel Kofi Mensah, Nkeyonye Otakpor, Joel Augustus Rogers, Melvin B. Book Description
From the length of the human genome to the number of stars in the sky, within these pages lies a fascinating collection of stories of mankind's speculation and discovery. When the great Isaac Newton looked back on his life's work, he felt he had been 'like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, while the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.' Given Newton's prickly personality, we may guess he would have been very upset had anyone else referred to his achievements in such terms. But the image he conjured up has captivated scientists ever since, and Cyril Aydon has cast his eye over the last 2000 years at the pebbles discovered by others.
Here is his selection of nearly two hundred famous scientists, and their astonishing discoveries—from how the Babylonians taught us to measure time and the first use of the word dinosaur to Galileo's revelations about the cosmos and Maimen's development of the first laser—retold in entertaining and illuminating anecdotes, together with timeliness and a fascinating medley of facts and figures.

Book Description
It is a common belief that species are becoming extinct due to forest destruction and other threats to the biosphere. Because of this belief, policies and regulations have been enacted to protect and preserve biodiversity. Unfortunately these policies are frequently flawed due to their notion that biodiversity is a static condition. They conflict with the livelihood of indigenous peoples and promote nationalistic control over biodiversity resources.
The author of this study proposes a fundamental review of biodiversity protection policies. Instead of conservation/preservation, a shift to attention to ecosystem management with human rights and human dignity at the center is recommended. This study prescribes a comprehensive system for the protection of biodiversity. Human rights standards, free trade in wildlife and regulated free access to plant genetic resources are proposed as the elements of this system.
Practitioners and scholars concerned with environmental issues, human rights, and sustainable development problems will find this work of great interest.
