5 out of 5 stars What are you good at? What will make you happy?.......2001-05-17

With this guide in hand, you can finally take charge and manage your career. Discover your key career objectives and personal goals and then navigate the job market to land the right job. Ken Lawson will show you how to develop options, make choices and maximize your strengths through identifying your values, skills and personal qualities.

Ken Lawson is a counselor, coach and educator who works with individuals and groups in a variety of career management roles. He discusses how you can manage your career, find out what you are really good at, move from one job to another, develop a career action plan, take charge of a job search, present yourself in the best light and how to network for career vitality.

Throughout the book you will find little extras. These are fun boxes of trivia, a definition of an term, a Web site address or a fun character pointing out a very important point, a complete no-no, a technical detail or whispering the inside scoop to you.

If you want success and satisfaction from your career, Ken advises you to put yourself in command of your life. He empowers you by helping you to paint your own career canvas. When you go to a party, are you proud of your answer to: "So, what do you do?"

Are you more interested in objects, information, concepts or people? This question can lead you into a job which consists of arranging items (perhaps this could be a secretary who is organizing files) or coaching (where you are helping people on a more personal level to improve their lives through your own life skills). They are quite different types of jobs and your interests will show you how you will fit into one of the four basic categories of interest.

Once you have taken inventory of your interests and skills, you can then determine your own personal style. Are you dependable, detail-minded, frank, fair-minded? Are you an extrovert or an introvert? You can actually determine your personality type as well. Once you know who you are and what you want to do, Ken takes you to the next step. Gearing up for your job search.

The all important resume is discussed in detail. What do you put in a resume? What should you NEVER put in a resume?

If you still want to do more research (this book is comprehensive), you can look for some of the books in the resource section. There is also a list of Web sites you can visit that look very helpful. A simple glossary and index, make your life easier and help you save time. Perhaps if more people would read this book before making a career choice they would have a great map for their future.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Career Guide Going.......2001-03-01

Spare yourself the ordeal of researching the hundreds of books out there on career guidance. Ken Lawson's KISS GUIDE TO MANAGING YOUR CAREER is the most comprehensive, beautifully written and visually appealing work on the subject you'll ever need (and I speak with authority: I'm a 40-something professional with over 20 years of experience in changing jobs and reading books about it). Lawson helps you think seriously about yourself ("What moves you?"), how to take charge of your career, plan and implement your job search, and how to keep networking ("the most important career management activity you can pursue") for continued career vitality. He's also provided excellent Appendices, including "Good Books" that go into greater depth about resumes, interviewing, recruiters, freelancing and consulting, networking, on-line job sites, negotiating, starting a business, office politics and more. In short, the KISS GUIDE TO MANAGING YOUR CAREER is simply terrific.

1 out of 5 stars A Curate's Egg of a book.......2000-07-12

Haugen's book is pretty good in some parts -- and really bad in others. The efficient markets hypothesis of finance does not hold up if it is interpreted as the joint hypothesis that stocks (and other financial assets) are valued on a discounted dividends (or cash flow or earnings) basis and that prices reflect all relevant information. But if the first part of this proposition fails, the second may still hold. Haugen doesn't seem to realize this, while his conclusions -- giving the subtitle -- rely on the jointness of the hypoothesis strongly. Furthermore, to conclude that since the conditions for a particular derivation fail, the conclusion fails is simply wrong in logic, and that is exactly what Haugen is arguing. The review in not very technical terms of several places where strong "anomalies" make one doubt efficient-market valuation is well done. The analysis of the problems with the market and their consequences is fatuously bad. Instead of giving a coherent argument -- preferably one backed with some research results -- Haugen produces a pathetically silly fantasy tale, and some unsubstantiated conclusions. The bad unfortunately outweighs the good; this book is better avoided!

4 out of 5 stars Offers a convincing theoretical framework for market vol.......2000-01-20

Although it is a bit strange that he has a story in the middle of the book describing a future political scenario in the world of 24/7 markets, Haugen makes a compelling case for the creation of volatility via the market itself, and not exogenous forces. The reviews above seem to be missing the point a bit. You may feel a bit cheated if you expect all academic writing and come across the story. I think that's what happened above.

Either way, CURSE THAT BRIGHTON BELLOW!

1 out of 5 stars dry, uninteresting, typical college professor type.......1999-10-12

A total waste of money. It is just a pile-up of diagrams that remind you of your Statistics class in college. The writing is incoherent, boring and plain terrible. In the book, there are repeated mockings of college professors which is real dumb. Ironically, Haugen himself is a professor. Hey, I would not take this guy's class.

I serious question the indepence of the two readers that gave the book a 5-star. Are they related in any way to Robert Haugen?

1 out of 5 stars dry, uninteresting, typical college professor type.......1999-10-11

The book is just a pile-up of diagrams trying to remind you of the Statistics class that you took in college. The writing is very boring, with little self-proclaimed insight. Nothing that you have not already heard of.

If you go to UC Irvine, think twice before you take this guy's class.

1 out of 5 stars Lit Review-OK; Short Story-Just Plain Awful, Folks!.......1999-07-09

I feel like Graham Chapman's colonel who interrupts a scene and announces, "Stop it! Stop it! This skit has gotten much too silly!"

The Beast is embarrassingly silly. The lit review is fairly well-done, albeit brief and biased. One of Haugen's arugements is that risk disappears when firms use less equity and more debt financing, implying that stock markets are wildly overreactive and excessively volatile. But Haugen ignores the fact that as debt piles up it takes on more of the risk characteristics of equity. So risk does not disappear, it is merely transferred to debt. Haugen also emphasizes that risk is insideous in that it increases the required rate of return that corporations must meet. However, in another book of his, he points out that risk (beta) explains NOTHING about returns. Risk matters in this book. Investors ignore risk in THE NEW FINANCE. Which one is it?

But folks, this sad little book is not all finance. About 90 pages are devoted to a poorly written disutopian short story, pitting a scrappy campaign manager against an investment banking juggernaut. Terrible. Stupid plot. Ridiculous characters. Dialogue that only Ed Wood could love. In one part of the book a group of Ph.D. "efficient market police" scare a snivelling faculty member away from telling the public how dangerous that stock financing really is (as if investors need a Columbia professor to tell them that). Well, the thought police aren't here quite yet. Tenure-track profs are under pressure to get stuff out. All those geeks spinning stock data and crunching numbers are doing it to find interesting results. If they find them-and they didn't cheat to manufacture the numbers-they get published. Period. Hedge funds, wealthy investors and fund managers are trying to take not-so-random walks down high-tech paths trying to gain modest extra returns. How does Haugen explain the cascade of investments books technical analysis, investing the Buffet way, etc., that rely on non-efficient markets?

Bottom line: If you buy this book you deserve to have your money lost. You probably would have blown it on something just as stupid. I myself wish I used my money to buy lotto tickets. So, by all means get it over with...buy this book!

Paul Sterry's Complete Mediterranean Wildlife is a highly recommended, take-along field guide which comes packaged in a waterproof plastic cover to protect a guide packed with small color photos of wildlife ranging from birds to flowers and insects. It's unusual to have a guide filled with a range of wildlife under one cover; this format and presentation will prove an especially valuable take-along tote.

                Book Description

'Scholarly, ambitious and scrupulous'. This is how the TLS recently described the Oxford Reader's Companion Series. In September 2000, the book which pioneered the series, The Oxford Reader's Companion to Dickens, came out in paperback. Now the Oxford Reader's Companions to Trollope, Hardy, Conrad, and George Eliot will follow on from its success. In this format each of these books, designed specifically to appeal to students of literature, contains a more comprehensive and accessible range of information than any other reference work on these writers. 'The busiest man of letters'. Few writers before or since have covered so much territory or written so many books. His output was formidable. The Oxford Reader's Companion to Trollope encompasses all the latest scholarship on this fascinating writer in one single volume. Thirty-six contributors have come together to bring a wealth of biographical, bibliographical, and historical information to illuminate the wider literary and cultural context of Trollope's life and work. Over 500 A-Z entries cover Trollope's literature; his work as biographer, journalist and travel writer; subsequent criticism and praise of his work; his family members, friends, and acquaintances; the social context of his life; his influences and the things he influenced; his interests and ideas. Entries include: Works: 'England and America', 'Clarrisa', 'Modern Literature', 'Cicero as a Man of Letters', 'The Higher Education of Women', 'On The Eastern Question', 'The Civil Service as a Profession', 'Letters from South Africa' Novels: Barchester Towers, Can You Forgive Her?, Orley Farm, The Small House at Allington, The Way We Live Now Biography and auto-biography: An Autobiography, Lord Palmerston, Thackeray Plays: Did He Steal It?, The Noble Jilt Short stories: 'Christmas at Thompson Hall', 'Mrs Brumby', 'Not If I Know It' Unpublished works: 'History of World Literature', Commonplace Book Private life: holidays abroad, food and drink, portraits and photographs, smoking Public life: public service of Anthony Trollope, Trollope and the Civil Service Trollope the writer: comedy in Trollope's work, heroes and heroines, language and style, working habits Issues and social context: charity and philanthropy, education, government, suffrage, agnosticism, atheism, art and artists, dancing, fashion, marriage and divorce, monarchy, old age In addition to A-Z entries, the book offers additional material: a useful thematic overview of entries, a chronology of Trollope's life, family trees, a comprehensive bibliography for further reading and maps of Trollope's travels.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensable Guide for the Trollope Addict.......2006-04-10

In his long writing career, Anthony Trollope wrote 47 novels, dozens of short stories, plus assorted nonfiction such as the journal of a voyage to Iceland and a book about the Spanish Main. If you like his work as much as I do, you need a vade mecum, or companion, to help remind you which character belongs to which book, with assorted explanations of the major themes and background in the Victorian era in which Trollope is so firmly situated.

                R. C. Terry's encyclopedic reference is both well-informed and well-written, and certainly comprehensive. Its only competition is Richard Mullen's PENGUIN COMPANION TO TROLLOPE, which is not quite so useful. Terry's book has over 500 entries, including several aids to navigating its 600 pages. The entry for Griselda, Marchioness of Hartletop, for example, identifies the 8 Trollope novels in which she appears, at times as an important character. There is no equivalent entry in the Mullen book.

Like Balzac, Proust, and Faulkner, Trollope has characters that frequently span two or more novels. This is especially true in the two big "sextets," the Barchester and Palliser novels, though not limited to them.

Anthony Trollope's novels have been a source of great joy to me over the years. There are few reading experiences comparable to the frisson I get when opening a new Trollope novel for the first time. I would not be surprised that that thrill will recur when I start re-reading them, as I hope to do some day.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to An Essential Author.......2000-10-06

This guide, at once learned and down to earth, provides a detailed look at one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, Anthony Trollope. Always a popular favorite, and only now being accorded the academic and critical attention he so richly deserves, this guide takes a reader through his many novels, travel pieces, criticism, translation and biography. Trollope was an indefatigable observer of middle- and upper-middle-class life at the height of the British Empire, during the mid-19th century. His unusually acute psychological observations -- still telling today -- and his keen eye and ear for social nuance and political intrigue are unparalleled in literature (George Eliot, a close friend, said she couldn't have embarked on "Middlemarch" without the groundwork Trollope laid in his Barsetshire novels). This volume includes thoughtful essays on all of the novels, with tidbits on critical reception at the time of their publication. It also describes aspects of Trollope's art -- his prose style, his sense of characterization, his plotting, his humor, his moral depth and his literary antecedents. For someone new to the author, it is a welcome introduction to his work; for those already in thrall to this supreme novelist's skill, it is an invaluable resource, a reminder of the breadth of Trollope's talent. It's a volume to be dipped into or savored at length. Filled with intelligence, insight and wit, this literary companion belongs on the shelf of any thoughtful reader's library.

                      Book Description

Presenting recent research spanning the late eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century in Western Europe, Argentina, Australia, Japan, and the United States, this survey approaches the history of criminology as a history of science and practice. The essays examine the discourse on crime and criminals that surfaced as part of different discourses and practices, including the activities of the police and the courts, parliamentary debates, and media reports, as well as the writings of moral statisticians, jurists, and medical doctors.

                      5 out of 5 stars Visionary.......2005-03-22

This book does a great job of exploring the future of robots, artificial intelligence, the human mind, and human identity. A few parts of it seem dated, but most of what the book describes seems likely to happen this century and to surprise the large fraction of the population which still hasn't given any thought to the possibilities this book describes.

4 out of 5 stars Good but a little too far out.......2000-04-01

Moravec writes a good book but I think his ideas are a tad to far out there. He doesn't take into account the possiblility of people not wanting to have their minds transfered to machines. He appears to assume that it is inevitable. I personally agree with his goals but I suspect that the majority of the population would be strongly opposed.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the prologue alone!.......1999-11-29

I picked up this book, expecting to learn a little bit about where we're headed with our computers, and the consequences therein. I learned all that--but I got even more than I bargained for. I have to say, the prologue in and of itself blew me away. I had never quite thought of humans as the first step in a bigger evolution. I read this book six months ago, and I haven't been able to get the implications of it out of my head since. If you're looking for the big answers--like "Why are we here?" and "What's the point?"--you may be like me and find more in here than in more traditional spiritual texts.

5 out of 5 stars A definitive Work for the strong AI perspective.......1998-05-08

This is a hard Hitting Strong AI book. It's the the land mark book the drew the line in the sand. If you wont to know what the strong AI position is this is the only book you have to read.

You wont feel special after reading this book... So much for being on the top of the evolutionary ladder

5 out of 5 stars Fast, fun book by a knowledgable author.......1997-01-29

This book is very pleasant and easy to read. Yes, the subject is in itself fascinating, but Moravec does manage to make that clear. Whether one is interested in artificial intelligence, bioengineering, or just looking for some thoughts on fun-filled research, this book is a sound place to start. In fact, this book is a great bait for caching curious high school and undergraduate students! I know. I've attracted at least a couple to my research just by letting them borrow my own copy! This is a gripping study of tiger conservation in India from 1800 onward, with natural history of the tiger, and first-hand accounts of individuals who have dedicated their lives to India's wildlife, and particularly the very vulnerable tiger. This book is a call to action, and the most moving account of the survival struggles of tigers in India, bar none. Beautiful photographs, and a splendid weaving of journalism and passionate advocacy. A must for anyone interested in Indian wildlife conservation, its economics, politics, and personalities, as well as the cat itself.
