Helpful for (Some) Leaders.......2001-10-13

This is a book I really liked when I got it last year. First, I'm a management consultant and coach to leaders, and second I regularly practice aikido.

What do the six principles focus on? Self-knowledge, Planning, Habits of Language, Values, Resiliency (dealing with failure), and Control (or lack thereof). I liked the insights and ancedotes in each chapter, and there are some really good exploration exercises spread throughout the book. Do these alone or with a guide; they're great for cultivating reflectiveness. "Think time" is something all leaders need.

The book will appeal to leaders who are intuitive or are exploring that aspect. Linear, hard-driven types--you probably will pass on this one for now. The author's earlier book The Paradox of Success addresses the disillusionment faced by those who have achieved success but at great personal cost. That book will find more resonance with a wider audience.

Aikido is used as a metaphor, and the author shares both his admiration for the art and admits his lack of experience on the mat. The book found it's mark with me. But for those looking for aikido, they should probably go elsewhere (George Leonard or Mitsugi Saotome).

No Aikido here.......2001-01-08

I also bought this book because of the "Aikido" in the title. Apparently, the author considers himself an "Aikido sensei" in the field of management in the same way that your typical sensei is a teacher on the mat. Unfortunately, most of us consider that an Aikido sensei of any sort needs to know a lot about Aikido. I'm not sure this guy does. If you've heard of this guy and want to learn from his extensive experience as a management consultant, buy the book. Otherwise, don't expect to gleam anything about Aikido here.

Not too sure about this one...........2000-12-27

The Aikido in the title attracted me to this book, but I have to say that it's a stretch to associate Aikido with some of the concepts in this book. It just felt like the author thought it would be cool to write about leadership and to then mix in his perception of Aikido.

In addition, I found it rather odd that the author is writing about Aikido but does not practice Aikido himself. I know one can observe much, but you cannot learn Aikido from watching - only by doing AND watching.

The only redeeming feature is the book's introduction to George Leonard Sensei.

Save your money.

Brilliant understanding and insights into THE SELF, but..........1999-05-12

There is one thing lacking in the work, and I say this with all humility. I mean no disrespect, the book is absolutly brilliant. But the practical techniks used don't go beyond the purely intellectual and there for are lacking. I have been the student of Yutaka Kurita sense, last direct disciple of O'sensei Morihei Uyeshiba, and again with all humility I can asure that the work lacks a deep understanding and implications of Aiki... Insights drawn from samurai philosophy little aply in the understanding of Aiki, much less for Aikido and in the understanding of TakemusuAiki...I would truly apreciate any reply. at your servise, Jack

This book of leadership aikido tells you how you can learn the art of aikido in business. The author shows different senarios and gives a lot of good examples. I found this book to be interesting and was trully amazed. It shows you how to handle any stressfull situation that you may have and gives you ideas on how to solve it. This book should be a must for any person who wants to be a leader and how to be a good one at it.

In this wide ranging series of essays, Naipaul tackles everything from John Steinbeck to Mauritius, the art of writing, to the game of politics. We get here an excellent cross section of Naipaul in the early to middle part of his career: you can sense the extrordinary anger of the early years, and feel the cool off toward a more detached, clinical despair that marks so much of his late fiction and non-fiction work.

So I got them all, and I'm glad I did because only the Third contains an index to everything included in all three volumes. The third catalog is worth buying if only for that! It's focus is on community building.

Are human memories stored in nucleic acids?.......2000-10-07

We were taught in basic biochemistry that this question was answered in 1965 with a resounding, table pounding "No." Case closed. But on reflection, and at this remove in time, it is clear that the (rather appealing, really) possibility that nucleic acids constitute a long term memory storage medium was neither tested nor refuted 35 years ago. No one knew how. No one would know how today.

The author, who became deeply skeptical of the original 1960s research that launched the idea of nucleic acid memory -- tells the story of this forgotten controversy from a personal point of view, and this is the most interesting part of the book.

The fact is, biological information is very typically stored as sequences and shapes, and there is no reason to imagine the human memory is stored in some entirely different way. Probably the notion of nucleic acid memory will get a second hearing someday when we have the technology to actually test it, and some sort of a hunch or clue about how such a thing might work in the brain.

A fun book on the subject is the science fiction classic, "Hauser's Memory," and it is probably the only other book on nucleic acid memory that is still available.

For a quick, seamless review of the currently accepted view of human memory, which is grounded on the assumption that memory is stored as synaptic changes, see Kandel & Squire's book, "Memory. From Mind to Molecules."

For a sense of why the cherished assumption of synaptic memory will probably fail, and pretty soon, see the recent, mildly written but revolutionary book: "Spikes," by Rieke et al.
