This monograph deals with the species of the families Nemonychidae, Anthribidae and Attelabidae (Curculionoidea, Coleoptera) of Continental Europe north of 52 ° N and of the British Isles. 50 species are included. For each species a short diagnosis and detailed information on the taxonomy, nomenclature, geographic distribution, life habits, hosts and parasites is given.

The book contains keys from family level to species and is finely illustrated with over 100 black and white drawings, almost all of which are originals drawn by the author and furthermore with four plates showing 35 representative species skilfully depicted in colour by Birgitte Rubæk.

The introductory part provides general information on the taxonomic history, morphology of all life stages, life history and economic importance, comments on phylogeny and classification and some practical hints on how to collect, preserve and identify specimens. In addition lists of hosts and parasites, a catalogue of occurrence by province for the 33 species found in Fennoscandia and Denmark, an extensive list of literature and an index are given.

The main objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive systematic treatment of the North European Nemonychidae, Anthribidae and Attelabidae based on richly illustrated identification keys and descriptions combined with up-to-date information on the distribution and biology of individual species. Volume 34 of this series treated the Brentidae. These volumes thus complete the treatment of the four orthocerous weevil families (weevils with straight antennae) within the superfamily Curculionoidea, and are indispensable for anyone - professional or amateur - working with or interested in weevils.

Not enough content to warrant the high price.......2006-08-19

This updated edition of the digital image processing text geared towards satellite-derived remotely sensed data has some good content, but like previous editions it is much too expensive for what you ultimately receive. For general digital image processing and its algorithms I really think that "Digital Image Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods provides much more quality for a lower price. Granted, this book has some GIS specific information in it that other books don't have, but I don't think that this warrants the huge price tag. The presentation is not particularly compelling either. Quite a bit of room is taken up with large tables and sample imagery rather than instruction and algorithm details. I would really suggest that someone interested in the specific problems of processing satellite imagery look at some of the online resources for the pre-processing issues unique to this field, and then look at the Gonzalez and Woods book for a much better explanation of digital image processing in general, including the pattern recognition issues of the later chapters of this book that I think are particularly poorly explained. The Crumbs of Creation.......2000-06-12

This readable little volume is based on the lecture notes for a university level "chemistry appreciation" course given by the author, a chemsitry professor. Filled with anecdotes about the importance of minor elements in history, crime detection, and all sorts of other areas of life, it is easy to read from cover to cover or to pick up and delve into chapters at random. This work is a rare bird in the general science literature: although fully enjoyable for its intended audience of the non-scientist with a healthy interest in the workings of the world, it is sophisticated enough, with enough detail and professional citations, that it is a delight to chemical professionals as well. The fans who have enjoyed my own well-travelled copy include a retired chemist, an English as a second language teacher, a precocious middle school student, a linguist, a full-time homemaker, and a chemical engineering professor.

Drawing on archaeological evidence and utilizing often neglected Spanish source material, The Invention of the Creek Nation, 1670–1763, explores the political history of the Creek Indians of Georgia and Alabama and the emergence of the Creek Nation during the colonial era in the American Southeast. In part a study of Creek foreign relations, this book examines the creation and application of the “neutrality” policy—defined here as the Coweta Resolution of 1718—for which the Creeks have long been famous, in an era marked by the imperial struggle for the American South.

Also a study of the culture of internal Creek politics, this work shows the persistence of a “traditional” kinship-based political system in which town and clan affiliation remained supremely important. These traditions, coupled with political intrusions of the region’s three European powers, promoted the spread of Creek factionalism and mitigated the development of a regional Creek Confederacy. But while traditions persisted, the struggle to maintain territorial integrity against Britain also promoted political innovation. In this context, the territorially defined Creek Nation emerged as a legal concept in the era of the French and Indian War, as imperial policies of an earlier era gave way to the territorial politics that marked the beginning of a new one.
