A Winner!.......2005-01-19
For a self-employed writer with a major case of disorganization this book is a godsend. From the opening advice in "How to read this Book" to the final chapter "Application Strategies", this book is packed with information and useful hints. From giving me permission to start the book at any chapter that appeals to me, to the 'right-on' advice about procrastination, to the values identification exercise, 'Managing Workplace Chaos' has made my workday more productive and less stressful. And the added bonus is that the advice in this book has helped me in my life outside of work. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
Waste of money.......2004-05-02
For the benefit of those who already can read with speed, comprehension, and recall, about a third of this book is redundant for you.
If you can set goals and develop to-do lists, another third is redundant.
And the rest of the book is devoted to stress reduction. This is a problem for me, but there's nothing here I haven't seen in many other places. So for me, this book was a disappointment.
I was looking for something more related to the business world, more practical and applied.
To me, this was a re-hash of things I've already seen in many other books and articles, and so general that it wasn't worth reading through again.
However, if you haven't started exploring this subject, this book might be helpful.
I guess I'm looking for something more specific, along the lines of "Organize your Office" by Ronni Eisenberg, which has lots of specific tips like creating a checklist for frequently repeated tasks, getting in to the office early in the morning so that you can get a start and get something done before it gets hectic.
Good suggestions for overhauling one's work & life goals.......2002-08-10
Chapter Four of this book gives particularly meaningful ways to create positive change in one's outlook and attitude towards one's work life. This chapter has helped me step back and see the larger issues which truly affect the day to day detail of the workplace. One reading of this book is not enough as each chapter is packed with so many ideas and detailed suggestions for improving one workplace environment. I need to reread this book several times to take it all in. I plan to keep this book handy as a reference and motivator to put as many of the suggestions into practice as possible. Improving the quality of one's work-life and consequently home-life is a goal that I believe this book can help with.
Sure-fire Stress Relief!!.......2002-06-14
This book was worth so much more than money. It has taken pressure off of everyone in our office, not to mention our family members. The techniques for speed reading were worth there weight in gold, considering the ever increasing need to read faster with the flood of information we get everyday. I am personally grateful that I bought this book. I have decreased my stress level ten-fold. Thank you Patricia! for your dedication to writing such a fantastic book!
A sure fire stress cure!.......2002-04-25
My company loves this book. the management bought each of us a copy and we read it at lunchtime. we are applying many of the interruption techniques and have proposed a new work flow strategy to the management as a result of what we are learning. a must for all working people today.

Book Description
Solid-state lasers have seen a fast and steady development and are the ubiquitous tool both for research and industrial applications. The author's monograph Solid-State Lasers has become the most-used reference book in this area. The present graduate text on solid-state lasers takes advantage of this rich source by focusing on the needs at the graduate level and those who need an introduction. Numerous exercises with hints for solution, new text and updated material where needed make this text very accessible.
Customer Reviews:
it does the job..........2005-10-14
The book is good for the class that I was taking. To learn about lasers I needed something that could teach me more than what was explained in class and this book was what the teacher recommended to the class.

Life changing.......2002-01-23
I was introduced to Ms. Malloys words by my 9th grade English teacher while preparing for a speech tournament. I had never read poetry like that before, didn't know poetry could be like that before. Her words were honest and real and no holds barred.
Because of this one book I have been writing poetry for the last twenty years myself. Everytime I go into a book store I look for her books, old or, hopefully new. They are a rare find. I even wrote this poem in her honor, circa 1985.

I felt like you

my song for him who never sang for me.......2001-12-15
I cannot recall who handed me this book of poems in 1976. Obviously it was someone who knew what an "incurable romantic" I was during my years as a single male. Although I was a big fan of Wordsworth, Byron, Keats and many of the pop music lyricists, I was so moved by Merrit Malloy's prose the all the so-called "classics" have never since seemed so lofty. Merrit and I were both living in L.A. at that time, and I could not resist finding her through her local publisher who offered me a mailing address. With my letter of gushing praise, I boldly included a couple of my own poems. Shortly thereafter, she actually wrote to me and included a phone number. We spoke -- she also has a lovely voice -- and set a date for tea (I think that was the beverage mentioned). Shortly before our scheduled rendezvous, she called to cancel, but said we could try again. I phoned once or twice after that, but do not recall ever getting through to her again. Merrit, if you're reading your reviews, I have not forgotten your poems and the kindness you showed by contacting this fan. We can still meet for tea whenever you're ready.

If you are looking for a collection of poetry to make you laugh, cry, and smile, then this is the book!
A Deeply Moving Realist Who Has The Ability To Move Our Soul.......2001-05-11
Malloy's deeply moving words about love, loss and life are so intense that the reader is actually able to experience what the author expresses so beautifully. I continue to collect her works as I have yet to find another author that compares. Her words fill in our "lack of" when describing the incredible depths of our human emotions. The reader will know the author intimately and will find self-realization in the everyday life subject matter about which she writes. Powerful and insightful. Reflection and renewal of one's own emotional being will be envoked after the first page. Malloy is highly deserving of the recognition that she was never awarded. Only the Bible could be more moving. ....

Italian memories.......2007-01-09
I bought the book Italian American Experience in New Haven for my cousin who was born and raised there and is now elderly. As a child I spent many happy days at my Aunt and Uncles home, with my cousin. When the book arrived I flipped through it and found myself enjoying immensely the stories of people I didn't even know, but also finding it brought back many long forgotten memories of my own. I gave it to my cousin and he was so happy to read of and see photos of places that were from his own youth.
My only wish is that more families could have been included----my family lived on 29 Chapel street and I remember the pushcart man with the clams on the half shell and the little bakery at the corner. I would love another book that covers that end of town and includes more stories---maybe a contributory book where all the older Italians could send in their stories and photos to be made into another book.
The book is an escape to a happy, warm, loving, safe time of life. Pure pleasure for any Italian to read because it is like sitting at the kitchen table talking over a cup of coffee.
I highly recommend the book.
In case you forgot the stories your Grandmother told you..........2007-01-03
This book is definately the best to come out in a very long time detailing New Haven's past. The pictures are incredible as well.
A classic to be for sure.
The Italian American Experience in New Haven:Images and Oral Histories.......2006-11-03
Unique format and of personal interest since my family is of Italian descent and we lived in New Haven. The author's interviews bring back many memories of growing up Italian.
The Best Book About New Haven Ever Written.......2006-08-15
Anthony Riccio captures the love , the sorrows, the hardships and the industrial and political life of New Haven in a way that no one before him has. How and why the Italians left the old world of a cruel Italy , an Italy only for the wealthy, is made patently clear in this book. The advantages and opportunities offered by a New America were varied and plentiful. Fortunately the Italian immigrant came here with an important work ethic and a desire for a family life which was rich in expectations and ambitions. Life was not easy for the first generation, but they 'made it' as we say in America. Their children achieved in the 1st 100 years in America what others took generations to do. Anthony allows the storytellers to say things in their own words so that the full flavor of their New Haven experience would be felt and understood by the readers. Anthony Riccio adds his own scholarly touch to the preface and to the beginnings of each and every chapter. The book is both a scholarly and authentic documentary of the Italian people who made a significant contribution to the growth and development of New Haven. They are an inspiration to all of what it takes to be successful . Read the book. If you read nothing else all year, this is the book to read.
A brilliantly written and highly recommended work that is as entertaining as it is informative.......2006-08-08
The Italian American Experience In New Haven: Images And Oral Histories by Anthony Riccio (Stacks Manager at the Sterling Memorial Library at Yale University) draws upon personal interviews as well as family and archival photographs to present a richly complex and fully realized history of the life and experiences of Italian immigrants who settled in New Haven, Connecticut in the 19th and 20th centuries. Not only is the daily pulse of life in the Italian-American community revealed in the life stories of ordinary men and women, the reader will discover how this immigrant community was affected by such landmark events as the Spanish Flu pandemic, the Great Depression, and World War II. Also revealed are the hardships of Italian immigrant women who labored under terrible (and often hazardous) conditions in New Haven's shirt factories. The integrations of historic photographs with the reported interviews transform The Italian American Experience In New Haven from just another ethnic American history into a compelling social history showcasing a vibrant, vigorous, colorful community. The result is a brilliantly written and highly recommended work that is as entertaining as it is informative.

The Picasso of American histories.......2006-06-02
"On Persecution, Identity & Activism: Aspects of the Italian-American Experience from the Late 19th Century to Today," could easily be called a new classic of Cultural Studies. Containing contemporary sources of information such as chat room debates, listserv posting and web page persuasion, "On Persecution," reveals the past with present means to better the future. This book clearly dispels the politically correct myth of easy assimilation into the American Dream. By examining the history of the Italian peoples in America, Cristogianni Borsella enlightens the current debate on illegal immigration of Mexicans crossing our southern most border. They don't want to assimilate. They work the jobs no American wants. They're dirty, uneducated and criminals. These claims are not new or unique to the Mexicans. Borsella documents these same remarks as applied to the new immigrants from Italy of the nineteenth century.
"On Persecution" is a Picasso of American and American-Italian histories. Uneven and at times odd, the work contains many sharp angles that at first appear disjointed. Yet together the pages form a complete whole, a needed presence in contemporary ethnic scholarship. "On Persecution" contains six chapters, four appendices, endnotes, a bibliography and an index, so it could serve a teacher well in the classroom. It is easy to read, and at times the personality of the author is so immediate and delightful, the reader may sense he is prying into a personal diary. Such personality makes the book flow quickly even when the narrative evaporates into lists and documentation.
The strengths of the book are many. First, Borsella sets forth a persuasive case that Italian immigrants have been a persecuted minority group in the United States. Over a hundred pages serve to chronicle cases of execution, lynching and defamations through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Second, this work illustrates that generalizations and contemporary categorizations seldom fit well upon the facts of history. Borsella uses the history of the Italian immigrants to discuss the social construction of race, white identity and assimilation differences by generations. His work is sure to disrupt the reader's assumptions concerning the working of the American society. Countering the notion of European white privilege, Borsella presents Italians as "historically black" documenting American societal segregation habits of preventing Italian children from attending white schools, requiring Italians to sit in the back rows of movie theatres, and American churches isolating Italians from the main fellowship by ushering them into garages and dank church basements. Third, the book raises serious questions concerning identity construction and negotiation, societal perception, and the media's role in influencing American culture.
Specifically from a Communication perspective "On Persecution" would be an asset to any Com scholar's library for a variety of reasons. The work is a journey of discovery. The author describes his own, almost religious awakening to his ethnic heritage. This journey is unselfishly shared by an author who makes his thoughts most transparent. The genuineness of the tour guide provides and effective ethos to his overall argument. Furthermore, a gift of this text is the serious respect it gives to contemporary communication forms. Borsella's fruitful use of chat room debates and webpage postings challenge traditional scholarship's lack of attention to the same. Another aspect I enjoyed were the historic pictures and cultural snapshots of Italian Americans integrated throughout the book.
The negatives of the book do not overshadow the many positives. His chapters are uneven, with chapter six containing four pages while chapter two is close to a hundred pages. The chapters are not units of though - some contain one major idea while other contain several key ideas, and in other chapters I could discern no overarching theme. Chapter titles would have helped, and a better editor could have made organizational suggestions to strengthen and balance the chapters. Indeed, these are minor grievances, especially when one recognizes that this is Borsella's first nonfiction book.
He begins his introduction of material with a discussion of several immigrant groups such as the Japanese, Chinese and the Jews to illustrate persecution in America is by no means rare. He then moves on to provide background for the marginalization of the Italian immigrants. Next Borsella offers a chronology of discrimination against Italians before discussing Senator Estes Kefauver's Crime Committee hearings of the 1950's that linked Italians and crime in the mind of the public. The fourth chapter deals with the construction of race and presents an online debate over the historical question of whether Italians are white. From there he examines the role of the media through television stereotypes, Mafia movies and news coverage of Columbus Day repudiations. The work ends with a reflective Epilogue on forgetfulness and the diaphanous nature of Italian inequity.

Book Description
Unplanned deforestation, which is occurring at unsustainable rates in many parts of the world, can cause significant hardships for rural communities by destroying critical stocks of fuel, fodder, food, and building materials. It can also have profound regional and global consequences by contributing to biodiversity loss, erosion, floods, lowered water tables, and climate change.
People and Forests explores the complex interactions between local communities and their forests. It focuses on the rules by which communities govern and manage their forest resources. As part of the International Forestry Resources and Institutions research program, each of the contributors employs the same systematic, comparative, and interdisciplinary methods to examine why some people use their forests sustainably while others do not. The case studies come from fieldwork in Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Nepal, and Uganda.
People and Forests offers policymakers a sophisticated view of local forest management from which to develop policy options and offers biophysical and social scientists a better understanding of the linkages between residents, local institutions, and forests.
Contributors:
Arun Agrawal, Abwoli Y. Banana, C. Dustin Becker, Clark C. Gibson, William Gombya-Ssembajjwe, Rosario Leon, Margaret A. McKean, Elinor Ostrom, Charles M. Schweik, George Varughese, Mary Beth Wertime.
Customer Reviews:
Good editors, frustrating contributors.......2007-05-19
Like most edited books, this one shows every sign of editors valiantly trying to get the authors onto the same page, while the authors ignore (or actively resist) their suggestions. Having edited a book myself, I'm all too familiar with the pattern - - and I side with the editors.
The editors present a common framework focusing on the importance of (mostly local) institutions in explaining successful and unsuccessful forest management in developing countries. It's not as strong as a real theory would be, but it's useful enough as a unifier for a collection of hypotheses that Ostrom draws out in her conclusion. About half of the chapters - - those written by one of the editors - - use the framework in a serious way, while the other half don't. The editors' chapters address larger issues about local management of common pool resources, while the other chapters tend to be largely descriptive case studies of local problems.
Both editors and contributors are part of an intellectual community that's interested in successful management of environmental problems (such as common pool resources) at the local level. It's an important topic, but it encourages the worst kind of case study research. All too often, research involves going off to a study site chosen for practical reasons such as language skills, local contacts, or government permission. Analytical questions get pushed off to the side, and I'm afraid that's true of many chapters here too.
In short: read it for the editors, whose chapters provide interesting analyses of local solutions to forest management problems.
