This is one of the wittiest books I've ever read and even though it's a book of mostly political essays, in coming back to it after having put it down for a day, I have that same sense of reentering another time and place populated by a host of interesting characters that you have with a really good novel. Here are just a couple quotes, selected at random:

"...the true tragedy of Oscar Wilde, the common enough tragedy of the clever young provincial who enters the deadly dull salons of London and, finding that the wit which was exacted from him as ordinary conversation by the more particular provinces is hailed as genius by the bored Londoners, forthwith abandons honest, artistic work."

[Defending Gaby Deslys, a dancer who was criticized for her scantily clad performance:] "When she crossed the Palace stage she turned the audience's thoughts to May mornings, and ices and money enough to go where you like. Now if most of us crossed the Palace stage, we would turn the audience's thoughts to November evenings and cold cocoa and thirty shillings a week in the Post Office."

The city is Worcester, Ma........2004-05-21

This book should really contain the name of the city (Worcester, Massachusetts ) in the subtitle. This reader believes an intimate knowledge of the city of Worcester is central to appreciating this book, otherwise the locations mentioned within the text will just appear as an unconnected litany of place names.. The book painstakingly plots the spread of the Irish immigrant community across the city landscape, parish by parish. It explains the political tightrope walk the Irish-American and the American-Irish developed with the host culture and with the newer immigrant cultures also attempting to assimilate. The author has done his homework. Quotes from leading figures, Irish community newspapers and political speeches are exhaustive. One interesting point that agrees with Andrew Greely's book on Irish-Americans is that the Irish outside of New York City and the Boston area. assimilated quickly into the melting pot, but the ethnic identity and more mature, less vibrant, industrial economies of the Northeast cities made the immigrant battle for a "piece of pie" more difficult, than in cities to the West. .The book shows that the history of the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Worcester is a pretty effective barometer that highlighted the conflicts within the Irish-American community. The author is to be commended on the research, but any purchaser of this book should know that a knowledge of the city of Worcester and its institutions would be especially helpful to appreciate this book fully. I gave it a three star rating because the quotes and research became a little too tedious in some sections.

African Americans in Science, Math, and Invention.......2007-02-25

This biographical profile deals with the lives and scientific pursuits of 160 African-American scientists, mathematicians, and their inventions. It is a very well-done piece of work, and an excellent fact book for libraries both public and private. Individual entries can be read independently, which makes it an easy and suitable source of inspiration for young students seeking role models. Individuals covered go back to the 18th century when Benjamin Banneker was the only recognized African-American scientist/inventor.

What I particularly like about the book is its insightful introductory chapter. From it two things stand out. First, the insights of that chapter and the individual entries I read together paint vividly the difficult path many of those included in the book followed. The path was difficult not only because any scientific activity is a difficult pursuit, but also because these people faced very high artificial barriers-to-entry. Second, denied formal education and training, the scientific endeavors of African Americans progressed in a unique way; they began with invention, then science, and math. This is almost the opposite of what happened elsewhere, where the language of math advanced science and led to inventions.

It is quite clear that success in science, as elsewhere, was a function of political freedom. Many of the early African-American scientists, mathematicians, and inventors were people who somehow gained their freedom from slavery. As political freedom increased so too did the number of scientists, mathematicians, and inventors.

I like this book, I like it very much.

This CD includes recordings of 100 species commonly heard in the north, including mostly birds, but also mammals, amphibians, and even an insect! Each selection is reasonably long and includes a variety of vocalizations, and the accompanying booklet is wonderful, clearly but simply explaining the contexts in which each sound is made. Lang Elliott scores another home run.
