Book Description
Meaningful Work
the Entrepreneurial Way your integrated guide to career and personal life management
a guide to encourage and empower people to become leaders on their own behalf. Taking responsibility for joy, meaning and balance in one's work-life is a very personal choice. This book helps people make that choice.
Living is a life-long process and working is a daily activity that will engage us for at least one half of our lifetime. As an agricultural society, life was far less complicated and frenetic than it is today - living and working were more balanced. Today, how work gets done does not naturally lend itself to a balanced, integrated Work-Life and this chaotic influence seems to be in place for the foreseeable future.
We come ill prepared for what we experience in the workplace today. The ever-increasing incidence of stress, anxiety and depression present glaring proof. Regan believes that `today we are living through circumstances that must, in essence, be similar to what people coming off the land faced at the time of the Industrial Revolution
a whole new world of work and living that was so different from the world they knew. The trauma of integration of that time easily matches what we face today.'
This integrated guide to career and personal life management presents a step-by-step Career Management process that empowers readers to make appropriate and meaningful choices about career issues, while considering the impact of those choices on their personal lives. It makes an impressive case for championing proactive career management
the entrepreneurial way and encourages individuals to see that no matter where they are in their careers, the option for meaningful work and a well-balanced Work-Life is attainable.

Book Description
'Landforms of Granitic Terrains' provides an explanatory account of the landforms and landscapes developed on granitic rocks. Granite is exposed over about 15% of the continents and is thus of an areal significance comparable to the carbonates. Whereas many texts are concerned with karst landscapes, granitic terrains are nearly absent in scientific literature and only few books bring together the collective wisdom. One of the authors, published 'Granite Landforms' in 1982 in which granite forms both in gross and in detail were considered. 'Landforms of Granitic Terrains' provides a detailed consideration of the forms, major and minor, well-known and not so familiar granitic terrains, developed over large areas of the continents. This work comprises interpretations which are of wider or general significance in the analysis and understanding of landscape and presents theories in the context of granite landforms.

Book Description
This unique selection of shorter fiction - The Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble, Master Humphrey's Clock, The Lamplighter's Story, To Be Read at Dusk, Hunted Down and George Silverman's Explanation-offers a fine insight into the workings of Dickens's creative genius. Written between 1837 and 1870, they span his career and exemplify his power to entertain.
Customer Reviews:
Dickens Only Major Failure as a Writer.......2007-08-04
This was Dickens only real writing failure. He had to abandon the Master Humphrey's Clock series due to readership rejection after approximately six serial publications, and the readers had mostly gone after the first story. In short, he departed from his popular themes and got ahead of the readers. As a result, he found himself with no audience. In his next novel, "The Old Curiosity Shop," he refers in the forward to the Humphrey series as "desultory" and was obviously not content with his own efforts there.
Overall, I thought the effort was terrible considering that Dickens was the author. It is a series of stories by some older men who are retired and who frequent a club. They recall various stories involving intrigue and murder and some stories that take place in dreams. This is not a good read: it is neither compelling nor interesting. I read it and was not too excited about the stories. After I started to research the book, I was surprised that it was still in print. Profession critics refer to it as "a frame without a picture." That is, the club setting of retired old men with their stories is the frame. But nothing of interest followed in terms of stories from the retired men. Just before terminating the series, Dickens tried to breathe life into it with the Pickwick characters, but it was too little too late.
As background information, I am in the process of reading most of Dickens's 22 novels and longer short stories, and set up a Listmania list. As a suggestion, avoid the Penguin Popular Classics with the plain green covers (I bought two). They fall apart and do not stand up to a read, especially books over 500 pages in length. The Regular Penguin Classics with the photo or painting on the front are excellent and some have maps and illustrations (drawings). The Wordsworth Classics are not as good, and some are illustrated.
Getting back to the present book, the only thing positive that came from the series was the idea to drop the series and use the concept to launch a new book which was called "The Old Curiosity Shop." That of course was a success.
So, this is Dickens worst collection of short stories. It was a commercial failure when it came out. The publisher lost money, and it is still bad.
More Pickwickian adventures.......2001-02-13
Collection of short stories tied by the fact that they were told during the sessions of Mr. Humphrey's Clock Club. The narrators are Mr. Humphrey himself, Johnny, Redburn, Mr. Miles, Mr. Pickwick and the Deaf Gentleman. Following the line of the "Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club", these tales are less outrageous and more humanistic, full of nostalgia and good humor. One good thing is that the Wellers and Mr. Pickwick reappear.

Book Description
Since 1943, scores of remarkable military aircraft and aviation technologies have rolled out of the hangars occupied by Lockheed's top-secret Skunk Works program. This in-depth look at the famous research-and-design teams pioneering work reveals the nuts and bolts behind production and experimental aircraft.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Aircraft.......2003-07-27
It is truly amazing what the Skunk Works will attempt to design. From the first operational US jet fighter, to the first operational Mach 2 airplane, to UAVs and suborbital spacecraft (the X-33) ... Skunk Works has tried it all. Normally they succeed, and that is what most books are about. But this one actually takes you into some of the programs that have failed. Although fairly small, it is in full color and contains lots of great information. Highly recommended.
Great Overview.......2003-07-05
If you want the ultimate (but slightly out of date) book on the Skunk Works, look at the Jay Miller work. However, if you want a good overview that is fairly current, then this is the book for you. It includes data on the UAVs and X-33 that Skunk Works was developing prior to their cancellation. Lots of great photos, mostly in color.

Book Description
One of the first of a new generation of books in mathematics that show the reader how to do large or complex computations using the power of computer algebra. It contains descriptions of 148 algorithms, which are fundamental for number theoretic calculations, in particular for computations related to algebraic number theory, elliptic curves, primality testing, lattices and factoring. For each subject there is a complete theoretical introduction. A detailed description of each algorithm is given allowing for immediate computer implementation. Many of the algorithms are new or appear for the first time in this book. A large number of exercises is also included.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for computational aspects.......2007-03-02
I bought this book for the math course I had taken having the same title. This is an excellent book, but only if you are really interested in its content. It's not a casual read, since it's graduate text. Also, a background in number theory will be of great help - being a CS major, I had a little tough time in the beginning, but things turned out just fine. As for content, it has excellent coverage of the subject, and I would highly recommend this as a reference in this subject. Remember, though, that this book deals COMPUTATIONAL aspects, for only number theory, look for other books like Ireland-Rosen.
Definitely belongs on the shelf of all number theory lovers.......2001-08-23
This book is an excellent compilation of both the theory and pseudo-code for number theoretic algorithms. The author also takes the time to prove some of the major results as background to the algorithms, in addition to sets of exercises at the end of the book. The book is too large to do a chapter by chapter review, so instead I will list the algorithms in the book that I thought were particularly useful:
1. Most of the algorithms on elliptic curves. The author reminds the reader that number-theoretical experiments resulted in the famous Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture and the Birch Conjecture. (a) the reduction algorithm, which for a given point in the upper half plane, gives the unique point in the half plane equivalent to this point under the action of the special linear group along with the matrix that maps these two points to each other. (b) The computation of the coefficient g2 and g3 of the Weierstrass equation of an elliptic curve. (c) The computation of the Weierstrass function and its derivative. (d) Determination of the periods of an elliptic curve over the real numbers. (e) The determination of the elliptic logarithm. (f) The reduction of a general cubic (f) The Shanks-Mestre algorithm for computing the order of an elliptic curve over a finite field F(p), where p is prime and greater than 457. (g) The reduction of an elliptic curve modulo p for p > 3. (h) The reduction of an elliptic curve modulo 2 or 3. (i) Reduction of an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. (j) Determination of the rational torsion points of an elliptic curve. (k) Computation of the Hilbert class polynomials and thus a determination of the j-function of an elliptic curve.
2. A few of the algorithms on factoring. (a) The Pollard algorithm for finding non-trivial factors of composites. (The author does not give the improved algorithm due to P. Montgomery, but does give references) (b) Shanks Square Form Factorization algorithm for finding a non-trivial factor of an odd integer. (c) Lenstra's Elliptic Curve test for compositeness.
3. Primality tests (a) The Jacobi Sum Primality Test for a positive integer. (b) Goldwasser-Killian elliptic curve test for a positive integer not equal to 1 and coprime to 6.
The author gives an overview of the computer packages used for number theory, including Pari, which was written by him and his collaborators. I have not used this package, but instead use Lydia and Mathematica for most of the number theoretic computations I need to do.
Excellent!.......2000-08-24
Cohen (the world renowned expert) starts with the most basic of algorithms (i.e. Euclid & Shanks). He moves seamlessly into Linear Algebra & Polynomials (bedrocks of most CAS). Although meant to be concise, he proves, or sketches a proof of the important results. Finally, the meat of the book, C.A.N.T. One important problem is finding the "class number" (has to do with unique factorization, which we are all accustomed to in Z). A detailed description of the continued fraction algorithm (for finding the fundamental unit), and others made it very enlightening. He then deals with primality testing and factoring, two very important problems, the latter because of RSA. First, a description of the algorithm, then the theory behind it. He covered everything, from Trial Division (Dark Ages) to Pollard Rho to NFS (cutting-edge). Also included are some useful tables.
Of course, CAS information from 1993, won't be that helpful (look in his newest, Advanced Topics in C.A.N.T.).
Excellent. Also try Knuth's "Semi-numerical Algorithms" for a more computer oriented approach.
