Best Introduction to the Stock Market.......2003-02-15
This was my first book on investing, three years ago. It starts with the assumption that you know nothing, but it treats you like an educated, intelligent person. The pace goes quickly, and by the end of the book you know everything you need to know to be an intelligent investor.
I have recommended this book to several friends who wanted a good investing primer.

Groz's book is just the kind of investment book that has been needed to fill the gap between market kitch and high-brow professional narrative. It leaves the reader feeling well informed but piques her curiousity -- and prepares her for an even deeper understanding of the markets and investing. It is clear that this was Groz's intention. A great book for journeyman investors seeking to negotiate markets and market-speak on a daily basis.
The Best Book on Investing.......2000-08-05
After reading many books on investing, this is the first I've found that offers keen insights to beginners and advanced investors. I would have no problem recommending this book to any of my Wall Street friends--or to my parents.
Good Book.....a little 'boring'.............2000-06-21
This is a pretty good book...it seems to me it covers ground a little too fast, and dosen't give enough examples. If you are a quick learner, this is a good book for you. To me, after I got to the part on Mutual Funds I started getting bored....I just wish it was a little more fun to read...but again, A good book to read and learn about the stock market.

Thanks--this is an incredibly well written and clear guide. Based on some of Groz' theories, I sold two stocks last week and moved the money into two others I already owned. The market has been good since then, but the two I sold have gone down and the two I kept have gone up. Great book.

Wonderful, but somewhat out-of-date (only at the end)........2002-01-16
I think that THE NEW AMBIDEXTROUS UNIVERSE (1990) is a wonderful book on symmetry and asymmetry in the worlds of everyday life, chemistry, physics, and unification theories. Everything in this book is noteworthy, and also up-to-date except for the last few chapters.
It is a very good updating of the previous (1978) edition, which concluded with many open questions in elementary particle physics that were resolved (and new questions raised) in 1978 - 1989.
It is high time for this book to be updated if Mr. Gardner can manage it (he is rather elderly; born in 1914), and a publisher will take a new edition. Books like this are gueling to revise and update.
Review from a non-scientific perspective.......2002-01-14
I'm not going to say that I understand all of this. Most of it is way over my head, but after reading it, I can say that I understand more now than I did before. I'm planning on attacking it again in a couple years. Overall, however, Gardner does a good job of bring complicated scientific theory down to a plain English level by using diagrams and analogies.
Frames superstrings and twistors.......2000-04-29
Every decade Gardner updates this book. The five new chapters in the 1990 edition, including material on twistors and superstrings, are well worth the price. What Gardner does best is frame the new theories within a historical perspective. For example, he says it is impossible not to compare string theory with Lord Kelvin's (W. Thompson) 1958 theory of vortex strings. Vortex string theory was fashionable for at least fifty years. Gardner shows the vortex string theory and the superstring theory to be kissing cousins: Lord Kelvin used perfect fluid to refer to the superstring quantum vacuum -- both referring to the same sub-space area. String theory speaks of vibrating frequencies of energy while vortex rings were also vibrating frequencies that gave the atoms different properties. Instead of quantum foam with jittering virtual particles, vortex theory had vortex sponges with billions of vortex motions whirling in all directions.
Gardner's account of Roger Penrose's twistor theory is short and excellent. Physicists have gotten tangled up trying to speak of deeper down events which are hidden from view due to their sub-Planck length size (10 to the minus 33rd power of a centimeter). Here it is pointed out that "on a sufficiently small scale the concept of a space-time point evaporates in the complex space of twistor theory." Twistor theory, like superstring theory, was merely trying to formulate how the submicroscopic particles come into being. Both theories consist of math and lack any experimental verification. To repeat, the author discusses these obtuse theories in a way that frames their overall direction of thought. Gardner appears to agree with Howard George who calls superstring theory a "recreational mathematical theology." The bottom line -- both twistor and string theory are philosophy -- not physics.

northern light.......2001-03-23
This is the quiet, intense story of an adolescent girl who struggles to gain autonomy in an oppressive family and narrow-minded town north of the arctic circle in Norway. The story (originally published in 1926) is set in the narrow confines of the bourgeoisie at the end of the nineteenth century, and the desperation of the main character, Alberte, is palpable. Cora Sandel (pseudonym for Sara Fabricius, 1880-1974) is considered to be one of the greatest Scandinavian novelists of the twentieth century, but is virtually unknown abroad. Despite the seriousness of the novel, it manages to delight most readers because of the brilliance of Sandel's prose. A must read for folks who love twentieth century women writers.

Description:
The purpose of this paper is to estimate the long term medical costs attributable to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) for all persons in Alberta, Canada in 1999, primarily using observational data. Injury claims with personal identifiers for 1999 were reported by the automobile insurance companies. These records were linked to the provincial health registry which covers the entire population. The registry is linked to databases which identify all inpatient and outpatient (including emergency room) visits, physician services, and other health records. Utilization and costs were derived for all casualties who were admitted to hospital or seen in an emergency room, and for a large sample of other (low severity) cases; a sample of matched controls was derived and their costs were also estimated. Actual costs were obtained for 3 years, and longer term costs were projected for subsequent years. Total costs attributable to MVAs were estimated at over $117 million for 1999. Average net costs per casualty, reported by severity group, were: $22.9 thousand for hospital cases; $3.6 thousand for emergency room - only cases; and $157 for other cases. Long term costs were 65% of first year costs for hospitalized cases and 250% for emergency room cases. Overall, aggregate costs for all non-hospital cases exceeded those for hospitalized cases.
