Practical, Useful Advice to Career Success!.......2007-09-18
Personal Best is a great book to have as part of your career and success library because as your life situation changes over time, so will the relevance of different parts of this book. Several years ago, I read this book cover to cover. I now pick it up from time to time, read up on the subject most applicable to my situation or use a chapter as a checklist to identify additional areas in which I can make improvements. This week I reread the chapters on Managing Your Space, Networking and Going It on Your Own.
The book is easily readable, structured by bullets and short paragraphs. Yet is still manages to provide substantive guidance, relevant research and helpful resources.
If this is your first introduction to Joe Tye's work, his discussion in Chapter 6 of how the 12 Principles of Military Strategy apply to career management and job search are worth the price of the book.

Very useful, practical steps........1999-09-24
Everyone wants to suceed in life, the problem for most of us is that we have never been coached on the practical steps we need to take. This book outlines those steps for us. With great examples, quotable quotes, and useable everyday advice, the principles shared are applyable to most anythng one does in life. Joe Tye is a great motivational speaker and a pretty darn good writer too.

Best book on FSA I have ever read.......2007-09-28
I like its strategic focus and case-oriented approach. The FSAP is terrific. In this book, financial statements finally found its correct place: describe the strategic decisions made by management. This book is never dry. Instead, it is vivid, fascinating, and a great reading for anyone who is serious with a career in equity research.
Worst textbook ever!.......2007-04-30
After three years of graduate school and two Master's degrees (MPH/MBA)I have to say this was the WORST textbook I was unfortunate enough to encounter. I wish I could get a refund for both the cost of the book and the pain and suffering I endured while trying to read it. If a professor tries to get you to buy this book please say "NO"!
HORRIBLE BOOK EVER.......2007-02-22
I am in an MBA program too. I have to use this book as a textbook for the course, Financial Statement Analysis. I have taken Managerial Financing before and done a very good job on that course. But it doesn't help me a lot to understand this terrible book. It isn't that course's fault. I appreciate that I have taken some financing course before I use this book. I can't understand this book very well totally because this book is terrible. Both textbooks for Financing and this course are published by the same publisher, Thomas?..I couldn't believe how different those two books are.
In this book, Pepsi case keeps confusing most readers. Most equations are not highlighted so you can not find them easily and quickly. Homework is not designed for the students who are studying this book but for the authors themselves. Fortunately, our professor sends his master copy to us. It will help us understand homework more, but unfortunately after we have handed in our results.
If anyone who teaches FSA, please do not use this book as your textbook for your students. Pls, pls, pls..Even though you are an expert on accounting or finance, your students will still suffer from your course and almost learn nothing from this TERRIBLE book.
This book sucks if you're learning for the first time........2006-09-26
This book is TERRIBLE. I am an engineer in an MBA program. The book is supposedly for non accountants, but I don't see how it's possible to understand this book if you're not an accountant. If you're unfortunate and have to use this book, find a good book that you can actually read to supplement the subject.
There's a lot mumbo jumbo using technical terms that could be much easier stood with a table and reference to specific numbers in the table. There has got to be a better way to learn finacial statement analysis.
Book Description
This book provides law students in the Caribbean with a basic text on torts accompanied by extracts from West Indian cases and the most important statutory provisions. Emphasis is placed on those topics which are most commonly litigated in the West Indies, such as negligence, nuisance, defamation, trespass to the person, employers liability and passing off. Although primarily conceived as a text for students reading for the LLB degree in the West Indies, practitioners will find the book useful, since it brings to light many unreported judgments which would otherwise be unavailable. The book will also be useful for postgraduate students requiring materials for their research in comparative law of torts.

Book Description
This book is the first casebook on restitution law to be published in Australia. It contains comprehensive extracts from the most significant Australian and English cases, together with some Canadian cases which indicate the possible direction which Australian law will take.
The author has included substantial commentaries following the extracts, in order to further explain the decisions from overseas jurisdictions, to place those decisions in an Australian context. In the last decade, there has been a significant number of Australian decisions which deal with important concepts in restitution, and which supplement, qualify or refine the English law of restitution. The focus in this book on the Australian position makes it an invaluable resource for anyone who is studying or researching restitution law in Australia.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful illustrated and photographed Book.......2005-10-19
Albuquerque is probably most famous for being the place that Bugs Bunny knew he should have taken that left turn at. But it is so much more!
A beautifully situated city at the foot of the Sandia Mountains with some geographical features that are among the most unique and interesting in the world. This Book does it justice. Well written and wondefully illustrated this book catches the eye and helps visitor and resident alike appreciate the geological bounty and mineral wealth as well as the cultural diversity of this region.
The first 65 pages lay out the academic and historical information that must be understood and appreciated to get the most out of the rest of the book which provides turn by turn directions to get out and experience for yourself what the pictures show.
Well enough done that even if you do not intend to do the trips, you will get a great deal of pleasure just reviewing the book and soaking in the beautiful pictures and illustrations.

Book Description
The interaction of electron beams with solid targets has been studied since the early part of the last century. Present interest is spurred on by the fundamental role played by the electron-solid interaction in - among other areas - scanning electron microscopy, electron-probe microanalysis and Auger electron spectroscopy. This book aims to investigate selected aspects of the interaction of electrons with matter (backscattering coefficient for bulk targets, absorption, backscattering and transmission for supported and unsupported thin films, implantation profiles, secondary electron emission and so on); to study the probabilistic laws of interaction of the individual electrons with the atoms (elastic and inelastic cross sections); to introduce the Monte Carlo method and its use for computing the macroscopic characteristics of the interaction processes. Each chapter compares theory, simulations and experimental data.
Book Description
Called a “remarkable story” by John Greenleaf Whittier and described by John Keats as “very powerful,” Wieland, Charles Brockden Brown’s disturbing 1798 tale of terror, is a masterpiece involving spontaneous combustion, disembodied voices, religious mania, and a gruesome murder based on a real-life incident.
This Modern Library Paperback Classic includes Wieland’s fragmentary sequel, Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist, as well as several other important but hard-to-find Brockden Brown short stories, including “Thessalonica,” “Walstein’s School of History,” and “Death of Cicero.” This collection also reproduces the newspaper account of the murder that inspired Wieland.
Customer Reviews:
An Interesting Beginning.......2007-03-17
I'm a collector of early American religious fiction, (my oldest book is from 1826) and a friend recommended "Wieland" to me as one of the earliest American novels. I found it interesting, both as an example of the early Gothic genre and as a sort of Americana.
The phrase "sort of Americana" indicates one of my issues with the book. While the protagonists are American in the sense that they are born here and the action mostly takes place here, their outlook is essentially European. None of them need to work for a living, and their life of leisure is that of European aristocrats, beautifying their estates with mock-Greek temples and pursuing European patents of nobility when older family lines are reputed to fail. Some people are merchants and others are landowners, but no one is a mere farmer or a laborer or even a doctor or lawyer.
In addition, the writing style is labored, copying the European style of works such as "The Castle of Udolfo". No word of one syllable is used when a synonym with two is available, and the more elaborate the language, the more emotional the scene. Even a reader such as myself, who enjoys orotund phraseology, finds it very heavy going.
What makes the book worth reading is the story. Based on a true incident, "Wieland" tries to understand both the external circumstances and the interior mental state of a man who commits terrible crimes for reasons of religious conviction. To accomplish this, Brown posits both an external trigger (a ventriloquist who convinces the main character that he's hearing a divine being) and a hereditary tendency, but still, the crimes and their basis seem to be, sadly, peculiarly American--based on the idea that an individual's impression of God's Will has to be more correct than law, tradition, or even the express words of the Bible. We're still getting in trouble in the same way--and sometimes to the same terrible effect.
Intellectual Gothic.......2007-01-23
These days, one rarely hears of Charles Brockden Brown unless one happens to be a literature professor/student. Brown has somehow managed to disappear from the radar, but I smell a revival in the future.
I absolutely loved this book. Not only is Wieland the first American gothic novel (1798), but it combines elements from the seduction novels that were also popular at that time. And more importantly, this work speaks to the precariousness of America as a nation at the time of writing. The book is loaded with metaphors, right down to the names of the characters.
Throughout the novel, battle lines are being drawn between religious belief and the hard science of the Enlightenment. The author, in many ways, shows us the many gradations between light and dark--but most of all--draws a very interesting parallel between Clara and Carwin, the only two narrators. "Wieland" proper is directly followed by another piece called "Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist"...you must read these two pieces in conjunction in order to realize the full gravity of Brown's genius. If you are willing to commit to a close reading, you will quickly find that things are not always what they seem. You will also likely begin to realize a bizarre parallel between the two narrators, which you may find deliciously surprising if you are anything like me.
The book was actually fashioned after a true story about a man who killed his wife and children in "the name of God." If that doesn't interest you, I don't know what does! If this book tells us anything, it is that we must rely on all of our senses, not just one, if we want to survive. In this work, characters rely heavily on hearing alone...and many pay severely for it.
The Modern Library edition is a bit expensive but it is a terrific copy and includes the actual newspaper article describing the crime---not all of the publications of Wieland do this.
The only other thing I want to mention is that there are some genuinely creepy things going on in this book, and the beauty of it is, none of it is supernatural. The psychology of man is a very complex thing, indeed, and this novel proves it.
Very satisfying and highly recommended.
the best edition of Wieland.......2005-10-11
This Modern Library edition is the finest available paperback edition of Wieland. The cover art is compelling, the margins are wide enough to notate, the paper is of decent quality, the text is authoritative, Caleb Crain's introduction is even better than Norman Grabo's introduction for Penguin, and, as if that were not enough, we finally get a couple of Brown's oustanding short stories--not the lame, too-often anthologized Somnambulism, but Thessalonica, an astonishing, apocalyptic tale of civil strife, together with several other pieces worthy of note. As an appendix, we get the viscerally appalling, absolutely hair-raising, newspaper story which Brown fictionalized as Wieland (one wonders whether King and Kubrick read it too for snowy axe chase in the Shining).
