Read and Keep this one on your nightstand.......2002-05-15

This is a must have book for you and all of your friends. Joni Daniels shows us clearly that we have the tools to get what we want from our work, families, relationships, and life we just need to "put on the safety goggles" (i.e. have a clear vision) first. The stories she tells have universal appeal -- you'll recognize yourself and your close girlfriends. Just spending 15 minutes at night reading this book was a great way to get a charge to my batteries, get me planning my next career move. This book is the kind that you don't want to lend. I find myself buying additional copies to give to friends.

A Book for all women of the 21st century.......2002-04-18

Power Tools for Women is one of those books you want all your friends and collegues to read, only you can not bear to lend your copy!. This book is a must for all women. We are in a position of transition, trying to balance home life and career, being wives, mothers, bosses, role models, and somewhere in there trying to maintain our sense of self. Joni Daniels has captured our issues and given us a wonderful resouce on how to work with them. Her wit and writing style coupled with her examples of real people situations make it such an easy read.

I just finished reading Joni Daniels new book- "Power Tools for Women" and I had to write this review. I have never done this before but I wanted to let other women know how essential this book is to help all of us understand how to change our lives and have more personal and professional satisfaction. We do have the power and the tools to be successful, to be who we want to be--deserve to be and not what our society, corporations, families,teachers, etc. peg us to be.

The methaphor of power tools makes it easy to understand and apply the advice in this book and I related to many of the examples Ms. Daniels used. I have worked in a "man's world" for over 30 years moving from secretary to vice president in a billion dollar company. You don't get there simply because you are good technically. The secret to how you get what you want is in this Power Toolbox. Read this book and level the field!!!

A great resource!.......2002-03-27

I liked Power Tools for Women because it really hit home. I could identify with many of the real-life examples the author wrote about. I kept thinking, "Yeah, that's me she's writing about!" Daniels' advice helps you figure out how to make things work whether it's on the job or at home. She shows that you probably already have the ability to tackle something tough, you just have to recognize it. She also gives suggestions on how to develop that ability. This book is packed with great ideas and is one that I'll keep referring to. It's smart, funny and right on target.

This is a great book that was a real help in getting me through school and in my first jobs afterwards. It provides the clearest explanation of various spatial statistical techniques that I found (after an extensive literature review for a Masters thesis). The software package is great, particularly because it allows the reader to see all the theory in action in a graphical way.

Shuji Nakamura's development of a blue semiconductor laser on the basis of GaN opens the way for a host of new applications of semiconductor lasers. The wavelengths can be tuned by controlling the composition. For the first time it is possible to produce lasers with various wavelengths, ranging from red through yellow and green to blue, in one substrate material. This fact, together with their high efficiency, makes GaN-based lasers very useful for a wide spectrum of applications. The second edition of this basic book on GaN-based devices has been updated and significantly extended. It includes a survey of worldwide research on GaN, as well as Nakamura's latest important developments. The reader finds a careful introduction to the physics and properties of GaN. The main part of the book deals with the production and characteristics of GaN LDs and LEDs. To complete the spectrum of applications, GaN power devices are also described.

Not the complete story - - but certainly a useful book.......2007-03-23

Subtitled 'The Complete Story' - it is not - it's just the early years of the story. Whilst this is a very instructive book and a great introduction to the blue laser diode story and technical detail, plenty of others contributed significantly to the blue laser diode story -- but that is not much of what you read in this 'bio' of Nakamura-san. At least you get some brief references to other teams' contributions.

The book reads like a set of 'cut-and-pastes' from Nakamura and his team's research papers - which is no bad thing. It's certainly good to have so much really useful material in one place.

Greatest book on the new Blue Semiconductor Lasers!.......2000-06-25

This book is by far, the best book I have read about the latest Blue Laser Technology. I give the content and organization of information my highest regard.

Thomas Thomson (1773--1852), chemist, was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1811. His History of the Royal Society traces the development of science from the seventeenth century through to the beginning of the nineteenth century. Based on examination of the Society’s Philosophical Transactions from 1665 to 1800, it vividly illustrates the progress made in each of the four main sciences -- Natural History, Mathematics, Mechanical Philosophy and Chemistry -- during this stimulating period. Divided into five Books, plus a section of Miscellaneous Articles, the work analyses each science in turn, providing the scholar with a summary of the advancement of science over 135 years and the contribution of the Royal Society in this development. Supplementary background for acoustic phonetics.......2003-06-20

If you read this book, it should be somewhere after the first but not much beyond the second or third work you tackle on acoustic phonetics. If you read it too early, you probably won't get what is meant by 'systems' in this context, or their relevance to acoustic phonetics and speech processing; if you read it too late, you will have already learned most of the material elsewhere.

Topics covered in this volume include: properties of sinusoid waves; LTI (linear time-invariant) systems; amplitude responses; frequency, period, and phase (this book offers greater coverage of phase than most books of its kind); the dB scale; systems that filter sound signals, like the ear and the vocal tract; spectra and spectrograms; and digitization of signals: quantization, sampling, aliasing, and reconversion to analogue.

This book is not an introduction to acoustic phonetics, and it does not go into great detail on any one topic; it attempts, rather, to provide reader-friendly technical background on many of the central concepts and tools of acoustic phonetics to non-engineering types, and to help the reader feel more comfortable with them. There are exercises at the end of each chapter which I generally found more difficult than mastering the chapter content, but they are useful in determining how well you grasped the material.

I wouldn't call this book an absolute must-read, but it's a leisurely way to review key concepts of acoustic phonetics and pick up a few new ones on the way.
