Book Description
This book analyzes how pressures from the capital market, through the bull market of the 1990s and the bear market of the early 2000s, have reshaped management action and calculation in large, publicly quoted US and UK corporations. Three detailed company case studies (General Electric, Ford and GlaxoSmithKline) illustrate and explore these themes using long run financial data and analysis of company and industry narratives. The text presents financial and market information about trajectory in an accessible way, coupled with an original interpretation of management actions and results.

Very Detailed.......2007-05-11
Unless you plan to practice in this field, this book will not interest you.
But if you do wish to be a sports agent, then this is a great book to learn about all the ins and outs of the process.
Book Description
Designed to satisfy the interest of law students, lawyers and anyone else desiring a basic introduction to the legal principles that apply to the world of sport. Very few lawyers ever get to represent a professional athlete, and some attention is paid to that area. Most of the focus of this book is on recreational or amateur sports, covering everything from personal injury cases to the rights of amateur athletes. This reflects reality; the vast majority of legal issues related to sports involve participation in amateur athletics.

Book Description
Cells of all living organisms have the ability to respond to altered nutritional conditions. They have developed mechanisms to sense nutrient availability and to produce appropriate responses, which involve changes in gene expression and the production or degradation of certain enzymes and other proteins. In recent years, the understanding of nutrient-induced signal transduction has greatly advanced and the emerging picture is that nutrient signalling mechanisms evolved early in evolution. This book provides a detailed presentation and comparison of the key nutritional regulatory mechanisms in lower as well as higher eukaryotes, written by recognised experts in this expanding field.

Applied Seismology
(A comprehensive guide to seismic theory and application)
By Mamdouh R. Gadallah and Ray L. Fisher
Publisher: PennWell books
The recent demand in the petroleum sector for new hires in all aspects of the business and the lack of practical training has created a major gap in the industry. Most of the books published by the professional societies and their training programs are highly specialized. The book by Gadallah and Fisher fills this void; it is timely and is a one stop shop for new interns, graduates and returnees to the business. The book covers aspects of petroleum exploration, development and reservoir monitoring. The book is orderly, well written, clear illustrations and contains plenty of practical examples. It is concluded with an extensive appendices and a bibliography.
The integrated approach by the authors to the subject makes the book distinctive. I highly recommend it to practicing geoscientist, reservoir seismologists, processors and field operators.
This book belongs on the desk of everyone working in
petroleum exploration. It is an outstanding reference.

Clear and Concise........2005-08-15
This book is for beginners and experts alike. The book offers a refreshing insight in Geophysics as reference for Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists. It may used as a quick reference or a detailed investigation into seismological topics.
I highly recommend it for the college student attending Geoscience classes (as well as every practicing geophysicist). Workshops are a valuable features - complete with answers. As a dictionary resource, the user will receive a precise definition of geophysical terminology.
Topics covered in the book are relevant to all sectors of Seismology - Acquisition, Processing and Interpretation (using modern seismic techniques).

Applied Seismology
By
Mamdouh R. Gadallah and Ray L. Fisher
Comments
Not too long ago, the science of exploration geophysics could be described in a single volume. Today, it is a vast and highly sophisticated field of modern technology. Its development has been possible by sustained efforts of scientists of different backgrounds -- physicists, geologists, electrical engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists. A large number of books have been published in recent years in their respective areas of specialization. Unfortunately, these books tend to be more advanced and not ideally suited to the needs of a beginner. Applied Seismology by Mamdouh and Fisher will fill a much-needed gap.
This book opens with a short introduction to the basics of petroleum geology. In view of the fact that a large number of geophysicists have no basic education in geology, this chapter will serve an important purpose. The next chapter provides elementary geophysical and mathematical background. The rest of the book is devoted to the main tasks of geophysical exploration, viz., acquisition, processing and interpretation of seismic data. The authors do not hesitate to include topics such as permitting which cannot be classified as geophysics but are essential from the practical standpoint. The heart of this book seems to lie in the chapter on seismic data processing, which is very well treated. The final chapter is devoted to a detailed discussion on various aspects of data interpretation including some relatively recent developments related to high-resolution data acquisition, VSP, AVO and 4-D seismic technology.
Throughout their treatment, the authors emphasize the practical aspects of geophysics and provide plenty of examples involving real seismic data. At the end of various chapters, they also provide workshops useful for students. This interesting feature makes this book a valuable tool both for the beginner and the practicing geophysicist.

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structure

Book Description
The seismic ray method plays an important role in seismology, seismic exploration, and in the interpretation of seismic measurements. Seismic Ray Theory presents the most comprehensive treatment of the method available. Many new concepts that extend the possibilities and increase the method's efficiency are included. The book has a tutorial character: derivations start with a relatively simple problem, in which the main ideas are easier to explain, and then advance to more complex problems. Most of the derived equations are expressed in algorithmic form and may be used directly for computer programming. This book will prove to be an invaluable advanced text and reference in all academic institutions in which seismology is taught or researched.
Book Description
This book was designed as a textbook for students who need to fill their science requirement.
The Quantum Revolution discusses how quantum theory overthrew the objective, materialist and determinist worldviews of classical physics. The text emphasizes how quantum physics may reestablish consciousness as a causal agent in science by delving into quantum non-locality and its implications to society.
Book Description
Ibsen's last work to use poetry as a medium of dramatic expression, Peer Gynt carries the marks of his later, prose plays. Its literary antecedents include Faust and Hans Christian Andersen, but the play draws on Ibsen's own childhood and character. He wrote that he derived many features of Peer Gynt from "self-dissection," creating a self-centered and irresponsible, but ultimately forgiveable, rogue.

literary, historical and spiritual levels beyond mere adventure.......2007-09-06
This reviewer, having performed in a college production of "Peer Gynt," having later studied it in Norwegian at Oslo University, and seen it performed at Oslo's National Theater, would suggest that the work is far more than appears on the surface and in English. And I don't believe anyone back in my college production had the foggiest idea that it was more than a pure adventure yarn.
That may be valid, especially in translation, but it can, nonetheless, be read on various levels of meaning.
The character of Peer and many of the adventures Ibsen uses in the play come from Norwegian folklore, and Ibsen based his character upon the then rather recent Asbjornson and Moe folk legend collection. All of this would have been well known to readers and viewers at the time. What Ibsen does with them is wholly his own and enduringly fresh.
The impulsion for the play, however, came from Ibsen's discontent with the political and literary mood of Norway of his time, and his critics read more satire into it than Ibsen, by his own declaration, intended.
After 400 years under Danish rule, Norway was enjoying a fit of nationalism, even to the point of rewriting the literary language--pure Danish--to reflect Norwegian speech, which never sounded like Danish. Today the two written languages are probably 75 per cent identical, but Norwegian in musically inflected, while Danish is the deep southern drawl of Scandinavia. And to understand how Norwegians felt in Ibsen's time, it is helpful to realize that Danes still refer to their period of rule as the "united realm," while Norwegians still call it the "four-hundred year night." The latter term even appears in Act IV in the seashore meal with Cotton, Ballon and Trumpeterstrale, and much of the dialogue is based upon linguistic meanings and "inside" political references. It also skewers philosophy, hedonism, class-consciousness, nationalism, eroticism, and greed. And no wonder Peer ends up in an insane asylum!
Thus, what appears as physical action and encounters can at a deeper level be seen as a purely mental experience, in which the individual "processes" the mental trends of his world: poverty, addiction, lust, pride--the self he himself declares to be a "calf of Gold," evolution, heredity, dementia, reincarnation. Even the dream in the hall of the Mountain King is merely a nightmare version of the wedding scene at Haegstad. And the encounter in Act V with the old man--the aged Mountain King--as a dream of death. The return to Solveig represents a mental awakening to the self she has always seen in him and which he throughout has known to be present but out of reach.
Peer Gynt's final question, upon returning to the Solveig he had long ago abandoned, is:
"Where was I as myself, the whole, the true,
Where was I with God's seal upon my brow?"
And Solveig responds: "In my faith, in my hope, and in my love."
Just as Peer Gynt can be read as Everyman, so can Solveig be read as the mothering aspect of the Divine, and the entire work can be read as Christian metaphor. It is a deeply metaphysical work, in which Ibsen draws upon a sense of Christianity apart from mere religious form. Just a few lines earlier, in re-encountering Solveig, he asks where he has been when he "sprang forth in God's thought." Anyone who has read my profile, will know that I am a Christian Scientist and I like to share from that background. So, I found a real connection with the Christian Science sense of God's creation being spiritually mental and the physical being a misconception on the order of the scene in the Mountain King's realm.
One reviewer has mentioned the poetry. In Norwegian, the rhyme schemes are often ingenious, with what are purely prose lines ending with rhyming words. And frequently, the feet within a line are split up among one or more characters. Sometimes it's quite subtle, and other times it's a bit contrived. My favorite is in the shipwreck scene, where Ibsen manages to rhyme "kansje" (meaning "perhaps" in Norwegian) with the Cape of Good Hope, by using the Cape's Italian name, "buona speranza." There is, however, no fixed rhyming pattern, nor number of feet in a line. It is precisely because the music of the language and the intent of the thought rule, that the rhyme scheme comes as a secondary delight.
This work is so substantial and so significant, that it is well worth learning Norwegian for. I did, going from three years of German to the ability to understand much of "Peer Gynt" in one semester. One of the benefits of learning to read the language, is to read the superb notes of the esteemed literary critic Johan Hertzberg, who provided the introduction to my well-worn and well-bescribbled Gyldendal school edition of 1956.
Original play.......2007-01-03
This is the first version of the play. Beautiful writing, incredible fluidity of speech. A must have between Peter Pan and Samuel Beckett.
Prodigal son.......2006-05-24
Few works of literature have inspired classical music that has broke into the popular press. One of these is Ibsen's Peer Gynt. Written in the late 19th century, Edvard Grieg wrote two Suites of music for the stageplay version of this Scandinavian classic a decade later. This poem / stageplay is actually a short novel, and tells the story of Peer Gynt, the ultimate ingrate of a son. Growing up raised by a single mother, he is the terror of his village, bullying younger ones and annoying older ones. Eventually he leaves his village and encounters a series of creatures and adventures bound to rattle anyone's cage. One memorable moment is when he finds himself in the Hall of the Mountain King, who happens to be a troll. This is the scene whose song of the same name by Grieg is a classic TV commercial tune. Life soon turns the young Peer into an older Peer. Near the end he reflects on his life with some characters he encounters. At this he realizes the waste his life has been. The moral of the story: don't waste your youth or any other moment of your life causing trouble for yourself or anyone else, for in the end you only isolate yourself and make life miserable for both you and those around you.
A Superb Writer.......2004-12-04
He writes like a comedian, waving his fist at your face, all while enthronging you to read on!
the emptiness of prodigality........2001-07-03
Often funny. Often bizarre. Always deep. Peer Gynt first appears to me as this self-centered youth who cares only for himself and the satisfaction of his impulses and whims at any cost. He is the quick non-thinker, who leaves a life of relative conventionality to roam as a dissolute wanderer. He is indeed all of these things, but all the while his "self" is not "centered". At the end of his adventures as a libertine, the grey-bearded Peer Gynt is at a cross-roads, and he asks the character of the Button Moulder this question: "What, after all, is this being one's self?" The Button Moulder replies that being one's self means slaying one's Self, and furthermore "observing the Master's intentions in all things." Peer Gynt contemplates this... restraint and delayed gratification have never been manageable themes with him. In my opinion, this whole idea of the search for the "self" is what Peer Gynt is all about. At the very final crossroads he is redeemed by the undeserved forgiveness and love of Solvieg, the woman he has once abandoned... this scene being a beautiful picture of the grace and love of God that is available to the Peer Gynt in every reader.
Ibsen originally wrote Peer Gynt as a poem, and therefore we lose the Norwegian rhyme and metre in any English translation. To compensate if at all possible, I suggest reading the play while listening to the incidental music of Edvard Grieg, specifically composed to accompany the live performance of Peer Gynt. (Note: My review is based on the translation by Peter Watts).
