The Mathematics of Finance has become a hot topic ever since the discovery of the Black-Scholes option pricing formulas in 1973. Unfortunately, there are very few undergraduate textbooks in this area. This book is specifically written for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students in mathematics, finance or economics. With the exception of an optional chapter on the Capital Asset Pricing Model, the book concentrates on discrete derivative pricing models, culminating in a careful and complete derivation of the Black-Scholes option pricing formulas as a limiting case of the Cox-Ross-Rubinstein discrete model. The final chapter is devoted to American options.

The mathematics is not watered down but is appropriate for the intended audience. No measure theory is used and only a small amount of linear algebra is required. All necessary probability theory is developed throughout the book on a "need-to-know" basis. No background in finance is required, since the book also contains a chapter on options.

Excelent book to start learning quantitative finance.......2007-01-09

I found the book apropriate for those who plan to start studying the necesary fundamentals of math for finance. Basic themes in finance, i.e. the CAPM model and portfolio optmization are presented in a very clear way to stablish the fundamentals. Those interested in options valuation will find help understanding the core concepts underlying the theoeretical models, something hard to find in papers. I'm satisfied with the book. Some power point presentations would be very useful for teachers.

Great Intro to Finance Math.......2006-03-24

Overall, Roman's book is a very good introduction to Finance Mathematics. It is easy to read and has many good examples. He chose not to include a discussion of Stochastic Integrals or SDEs, so his discussion of Options Pricing was as a limiting case of the CRR model.

A good geologic review for the beginner.......1999-07-28

This book is a good review book for the novice geology fan or the most crusted old timmer. Good indepth explinations without much of the techno babble that can be associated with geology. Easy to fallow and understand. A good companion for those who do the Death Valley car tour. A must have.

Review of Teaching Physics with Toys.......2005-09-07

Although this book has what seem to be some really fun and illustrative experiments, I was a bit put off with how many toys and other prepatory materials I will need to purchase. Since I home school my daughter, I will be buying things for one time use. I'm not sure how much I will actually use this book.

Good Resource for the Science Teacher's Library.......2000-08-09

This book offers 42 activities, evenly distributed among K-3, 4-6, and 7-9. As is often the case with such resources, those categories meant little to my eighth grade students or me. If you are a teacher, you know that you can adapt almost any activity to make it fit your needs.

The activities all include the following well developed sections: key science topics, key process skills, time required, materials - for getting ready - for introducing the activity - for the procedure - for variations and extensions, safety and disposal, getting ready, introducing the activity, procedure, variations and extensions, explanation, assessment options, cross-curricular integration, and some of the activities also have hand-out masters. (I wish they all did, but the assessment options provided are a good substitute.)

My only problem with the book is that some of the activities do require the purchase of a real toy. I found that sometimes this resulted in a time-consuming quest. I put an asterisk after those activities requiring items I found difficult to locate (but eventually did).

While compiling a listing of North Carolina wineries, I stumbled across Pamela Watson's book in a local library. With the wealth of history on grapes and winemaking in the Tarheel State, I bought an autographed copy for my personal library. I found it perfect for the day tripper, as this paperback fits nicely in a picnic basket or the door map pocket of my van. Extensive interviews with winery owners, lots of history, precise driving directions, wine listings, food pairings, and other sites of interest near each winery (including chambers of commerce, lodging information, and recommendations for local eateries). Well researched and complete for both North and South Carolina and their burgeoning wine industry. Contains telephone numbers, web sites (if available), and suggested winery groupings for day tours. Would that all winery guides be this complete!

These topics are charged though a bit distance for many students; but more importantly the articles which argue two sides of each topic demonstrate some of the historical approaches to any subject. The articles are relatively easy to understand but instructors may wish to use multiple pairs to explore various steps in the historical process. I use it in my "Learning Strategies of College History" course at Indiana University.

From a proton to the deeper reaches of space (at 10 million light years), this little gem has been an inspiration to me since I purchased it a few years ago. It is based on the film of the same name. It simply presents photos of each level with what you are looking at---one picture per page. Hence, the "flipbook" feature.

Going by the mathematical powers of ten (ie 10 to the +23 meters (outer space past our galaxy) to the proton at 10 to the -15 power, the structure of our universe and ourselves is endlessly fascinating to me. It actually solidifies my validation of the truth "as above, so below".

If one ever doubts that there is a Higher Power, just check this amazing visual feast of a book out!

A mind-expanding experience!

Excellent Concept & Motivation Book for Teachers & Students.......1999-07-28

This picture book is an excellent pictorial view of the miniscule to the enormous. Very Interesting! Mathematics and science teachers at all levels should have this book in their classrooms. I can't wait to show my Algebra and Mathematics Laboratory students. On the other hand, this book would be interesting for anyone having interest in Science, Astronomy, Mathematics, and Measurement.
