How to profit from the wit and wisdom of famous quotations.......1999-07-18
This book, a companion to The Ultimate Investor by the same authors is a reference for all who value meaningful words applied not only to investing but also to everyday life. Naturally, it ties in with investing and particularly its companion book which is referred to in nearly every chapter. Some of the quotations may be familiar to most readers but when one looks at them in the context of investing wisely, they take on a different meaning. In reading this book, one is tempted to try to memorize some of the quotations which have particular relevance to the reader's interests. This is a sign of value in what has been said which correspondingly makes the book valuable as well. Full credit goes to the authors for putting so many interesting and often witty quotations in a book which can and should be a reference for economists, investors, portfolio managers, investmen advisors and for that matter anyone who appreciates the influence of words on our daily lives. The persons quoted range from the ancient Greeks to the founders of America, to the humourists like Mark Twain, and poets like Ralph Waldo Emerson, to economists and to the modern day investment gurus like Warren Buffet, George Soros and Dean LeBaron. An important addition to any library.

The Chemistry of Gold Extraction
ASIN: 0444517308
Release Date: 2005-12-13 |
Book Description
The gold processing industry is experiencing change. As free-milling and oxide ores become depleted, more complex polymetallic and refractory ores are being processed, coupled with increasing pressure for stricter environmental compliance. Recent years have also seen a steady reduction in mineral processing and metallurgy graduates and a gradual loss of older operating experience. A contribution to documenting current and future best practice in gold ore processing seems timely.
The focus of this volume is on advances in current gold plant operation, from conception to closure; chapters also cover innovations at the bench and pilot-scale level that would be expected to find commercial application at some stage. Sufficient coverage is also given to the chemistry and engineering aspects. The general principle behind the structure of the volume is that of flowsheeting based on unit operations and applied to a mineralogical classification of gold ore types. From concept to closure, this book covers all unit operations, mineralogies and processes that are relevant to dealing with today's complex orebodies.
Practical experience is vital to the successful development, operation and closure of any operation. The 42 chapters have been contributed by a total of 66 authors and co-authors who are experts from countries spanning the globe, and representing exhaustive practical knowledge covering many disciplines relevant to gold processing.
* Current best practice as elucidated by a select panel of experts in the field
* Innovations at the bench and pilot-scale level that would be expected to find commercial application at some stage
* Mineralogical-based approach to flowsheeting
Book Description
This book offers an elementary and unified introduction to the non-perturbative results obtained in relativistic quantum field theory based on classical soliton and instanton solutions. Such solutions are derived for a variety of models and classified by topological indices. The methods are then developed for quantizing solitons to obtain quantum particles. Vacuum tunneling, &ugr;-vacua and the dilute-instanton-gas approximation are described in detail. Other instanton effects related to quark-quark forces, confinement, the U(1) problem and Borel summability are also discussed. The emphasis is on presenting the basic ideas in a simple pedagogical way. Technical tools like functional methods, Grassman integrals, homotopy classification, collective co-ordinates etc. are developed ab initio.
The presentation of this work is kept at a fairly simple level and ideas are developed through illustrative examples. Techniques not covered in older field theory textbooks, such as functional integral methods, are presented in some detail to the necessary extent. These techniques are important in their own right. Although the book is mainly addressed to particle physicists and quantum field theorists, several portions will be of relevance to other branches of physics, particularly statistical mechanics. These include three chapters devoted to deriving classical soliton and instanton solutions and one on collective co-ordinates, as well as sections devoted to general techniques.
Customer Reviews:
one of the best books on quantum field theory.......2000-11-25
This is a very well-written, pedagogical book that goes through many aspects of field theory "lore" that are not covered at all in other books that I have seen. A great supplement to the standard field theory texts.

Book Description
Originally published in Scribner’s, The Cosmopolitan, McClure’s, and Lippincott’s, Sarah Orne Jewett’s stories about Irish immigrant figures constitute a neglected corner of her oeuvre, despite the fact that Jewett herself entertained the possibility of collecting them into a volume to be called Transplanted Shamrocks. Because the proposed collection never appeared, Jewett’s tales of the Irish in America, stories that constitute an invaluable historical and literary record, appear together for the first time in this anthology. These eight stories represent the first serious treatment of the Irish in America by an important literary figure.
After a visit to Ireland in 1882, this superior nineteenth-century New England writer expanded the scope of her interests to provide fictional portraits of the newly arrived Irish population. She told the sometimes happy and more often sad tales of their acculturation in "The Luck of the Bogans" (1889), "A Little Captive Maid" (1891), "Between Mass and Vespers" (1893), "The Gray Mills of Farley" (1898), "Where’s Nora?" (1898), "Bold Words at the Bridge" (1899), "A Landlocked Sailor" (1899), and" Elleneen" (1901). For Jewett, the Irish comprised a unique and fascinating addition to the New England local color figures it was her life’s work to represent in literary fiction. She believed the Irish immigrant brought a new vitality and charm to the New England landscape.
In their introduction, editors Jack Morgan and Louis A. Renza point out that in these stories Jewett displayed a remarkable empathy for the Irish. Undoing the "Paddy" stereotype favored in nineteenth-century Yankee discourse, Jewett exhibited an understanding of the immigrant psyche unheard of among her fellow writers— including Emerson and Thoreau, both of whom wrote disdainfully of the Irish.
Morgan and Renza further discuss the stories in the context of contemporary multicultural and ethnic concerns, showing that Jewett’s Irish stories demonstrate a renewal—a redefining, questioning, and expanding of cultural boundaries within concentrated American communities, her own New England area in particular. As such, the editors contend, the stories constitute important documents in the history of a country still engaged with the multiethnic as well as the multi-individualist paradox of "E pluribus unum."
Above all, however, these stories are touching and deeply felt treatments of subjects dear to her heart by one of our major writers.

Book Description
The Cheyenne Indians: Their History and Their Ways of Life is a classic ethnography, originally published in 1928, that grew out of George Bird Grinnell's long acquaintance with the Cheyennes. Volume I looks at the tribe's early history and migrations, customs, domestic life, social organization, hunting, amusements, and government. In a second volume, Grinnell would consider its warmaking and warrior societies, healing practices and responses to European diseases, religious beliefs and rituals, and legends and prophecies surrounding the culture hero Sweet Medicine. George Bird Grinnell was a zoologist by training and an anthropologist by inclination. He accompanied Custer's Black Hills expedition as a naturalist in 1874 and from that time until his death in 1938 was closely associated with the Cheyennes and other Plains tribes. Other books by Grinnell available in Bison Book editions are Blackfoot Lodge Tales, Pawnee Hero Stories and Folk-Tales, By Cheyenne Campfires, and The Punishment of the Stingy and Other Indian Stories.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended for those interested in NA history.......2000-08-25
Early writers of Native American history tend to fall into two groupings. There are those who relied only on written history, and therefore ignored most of what Indians had to say about their own past; and there were those who tried to serve as a conduit through which the Indians could tell their own history. Happily, Grinnell falls into the second category, and his work turns out to be both interesting, and readable.
Though not as exciting as his better known work, The Fighting Cheyenne, which was a warrior history, this book provides a lot of information about the early history of the Cheyennes, and their migration westward. It also goes into many aspects of their culture and society. Volume one (which is the only one I have read so far) ends with a chapter on Cheyenne tribal government. Here Grinnell does a wonderful job of handling a topic, which is actually rather simple, but which eluded many white historians, such as George Hyde, who insisted on believing that chieftanship must have carried with it certain dictatorial powers. He also shows great insight into the status of women. So many white historians, even today, do not understand the high standing that women held in Plains Indian society.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the Plains Indians, and I am quite anxious to get on to volume two which deals, among other things, with religious practices.

One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way
ASIN: 0312306571 |
Book Description
Ian Robertson has always been fascinated by how the mind makes images, an awesome power that directly and deeply affects our lives. All of us 'visualize' the world differently, and how we do so dictates the way we feel, remember, and think-and therefore our health, memory, and creativity. In this lively, accessible, and fascinating book, Robertson explains that most of us employ language as a basis for visualization. In effect, we think in words more than in images. The result is an imbalance between the logical and the intuitive, be-tween imagery-based thought and language-based thought. Opening the Mind's Eye is both an enlightening and stimu-lating explanation of how we 'see,' and a compelling argu-ment for extending the mind's powers to improve the quality of our lives. Like Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence, it combines insight and application.
Customer Reviews:
This is good.......2004-03-10
I've always been fascinated by the inner workings of the mind and how one can improve it. This book is a fascinating exploration on how the mind really thinks. It's illustrated in extremely simple language. Interestingly post reading the book I came across other people who use a similar concept. Moreover I have been reading books on memory etc. primarily by authors such as Harry Lorayne, and there too I find the emphasis on thinking in visuals. If you visualize it you remember it. The book does cover memory also to a certain extent but the other coverage is awesome. This book is a definite yes if you want to learn how your mind works and how you can help yourself think better. I wish I had come across this earlier in life. I'm definitely on the lookout for more of such work.
An Agnostic Looks at Spiritual Matters.......2003-09-18
I purchased this book to learn more about the functions of the right hemisphere of the brain. It was disappointing to have a sermon from a self-proclaimed agnostic advocating that religion be subordinated to "science". Robertson acknowledges throughout the book that there are ways of knowing beyond logic (as processed by the left brain). The science part is informative and helpful. It's his added editorializing that weakens the book. He concludes it with a push for a "new religion" to emerge, some odd mixture of various existing religious. His argument indicates his religion is science, which contradicts what he argues elsewhere in the book, about different forms of knowing. He lumps all religions together, seeing them as essentially being all alike, with Buddhism being his slight favorite. I learned new information on the way the brain works, however I had to tolerate a lot of intolerance to my Christian faith along the way.

Book Description
This book explores the important changes in the nature and role of national environmental pressure groups in Britain during the last ten years. This period has been a remarkable phase in the development of environmentalism as a local, national and international movement. In Britain, these years have seen dramatic growth in support and greater political influence for the environmental movement, particularly at the national level where environmental groups have become increasingly professional and well-resourced organizations. Applying social movement and political theory, the book examines this period in detail and begins to assess its implications, both for these organizations and for environmentalism itself. Drawing on interviews with many leaders and campaigners--both past and present--of the largest national groups, Peter Rawcliffe explores changes in their mobilization, organization and impact during the last ten years.
