This is a book about a woman that got treated poorly by everybody she met. She worked at the worst possible corporations in America and then she wrote a book about it.
I am a minority and have suffered a lot more discrimination and subtle insults than I care to remember. This book did nothing for me. It is just a collection of complaints and repeticious hateful messages agains men. The interested reader will benefit a lot more from reading books like "The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-defense".

Many of us think we are sensitive to others until we read this book. The most politically correct person can learn from the situations presented in an easy to understand fashion. I have heard jokes, comments and remarks everyday that seemed innocent enough. After reading Corporate Culture I see a need to change ways in our office and ourselves. You will gain a greater understanding of why othes become uncomfortable and how to prevent a toxic work environment that crushes morale and productivity. Keep it next to the company policy book in your Human Resources office.

During my nearly thirty years as an Adult Educator working with new emigres in the United States, I have been moved by students' attempts to continue their careers in this country or in many cases, begin totally new professional lives. Numerous books have been used in my classes to help enrollees adjust to the language, work environment, and the often humiliating need to begin with an entry-level position. Unfortunately, none of the written material I have reviewed for three decades could capture the essence of their experience.

At last, there is an author, Dr. Diane Kasunic, whose empathy and perspicacity breaks the trend. In her seminal work, The Corporate Cult: Surviving and Transforming Your Career, Dr. Kasunic converses with the reader directly about themes which affect anyone, regardless of national origin, who has ever tried to excel in career activities. This book was great! It is inspiring and touching and informative about the inner workings of the tech business in the late 90's. Being that I have several ideas of my own which I'm attempting to get off the ground it was a great read for me - so much so that I read the entire book in a day. That's how easy of a read and how interesting this book is!

a whitewash by a callow founder.......2006-11-17

At an age when he should have been interning in an NGO or assistant-managing a fast food outlet, Paternot became a tycoon on paper. That was a topsy-turvy, demented era that evokes only embarrassment and disdain now. Now Paternot, who was part of vaporizing trusting investors' money, tries yet again to make a few bucks off the corpse of that era. Don't help him. Borrow the book through interlibrary loan (it is unlikely your particular library will own it) and struggle through his amateurish prose for free.

I really enjoyed this story. Having grown up in the same time I could relate with the description of reality as the writer describes. He is clearly not a writer by profession, which makes the book seem even more genuine and accurate. This book is a keeper!

I just finished reading this book and I just wanted to say that I think this story is very fascinating. It was akin to reading a private diary. ( I wish I could write like that too.) To be so young and hit it big is the sort of thing that people dream of, myself included. I am 30 years old and so I can relate to some of the things he went through. As was pointed out, on the one hand, Steph and Todd had to conduct themselves as mature businessmen running a company. And on the other hand, he wanted to act the way other 23-year olds act, fun-loving and party-going, with boundless energy.

The last chapter, The Second Coming, was my favorite, as he poses self-searching questions about what new direction to take with his life. I find myself in the same position at this very moment. Good for him that he found his calling--- writing and acting. Hope to see the movie when it comes out.

Internet mania.......2002-07-09

I am 29 years old and was looking for a book to read by an author of my generation. And I stumbled across this one by Stephan Paternot. His true story almost reads like a novel because it sounds so exciting and adventurous. Being about the same age as the author and having been swept through Internet mania and lost my share of money, I found his story very engaging. I saw the review in salon.com after reading the book and was rather disappointed that the reviewer did not share my enthusiasm. Apparently, the book did not meet the reviewer's high intellectual standards, when in fact, Paternot's writing style was (I felt) a major strength in the book. It's as if the negative reviews (from other websites) I have seen are not so much about his book as they are begrudging of Paternot who possesses youth, movie-star looks, worldly upbringing, entrepreneurial family heritage, and Ivy League schooling. So his company failed. But other than maybe Michael Dell or Bill Gates when they were starting out, how many under-30 CEOs do you know have the poise and savvy to lead a highly publicized and publicly-traded company?

The literal description is accurate but for $25 somehow you expect more. It's just a copy of the rules and some short commentary. It's pocket-sized and if you are wealthy, you might be happy with the purchase. I expected more and regret that I was too lazy to seek a refund notwithstanding that it more or less is what it claims.

Metallic (magnetic and non-magnetic) nanocrystalline materials have been known for over ten years but only recent developments in the research into those complex alloys and their metastable amorphous precursors have created a need to summarize the most important accomplishments in the field. This book is a collection of articles on various aspects of metallic nanocrystalline materials, and an attempt to address this above need.

The main focus of the papers is on the new issues that emerge in the studies of nanocrystalline materials, and, in particular, on (i) new compositions of the alloys, (ii) properties of conventional nanocrystalline materials, (iii) modeling and simulations, (iv) preparation methods, (v) experimental techniques of measurements, and (vi) different modern applications. Interesting phenomena of the physics of nanocrystalline materials are a consequence of the effects induced by the nanocrystalline structure. They include interface physics, the influence of the grain boundaries, the averaging of magnetic anisotropy by exchange interactions, the decrease in exchange length, and the existence of a minimum two-phase structure at the atomic scale.

Attention is also paid to the special character of the local atomic ordering and to the corresponding interatomic bonding as well as to anomalies and particularities of electron density distributions, and to the formation of metastable, nanocrystalline (or quasi-crystalline) phases built from exceptionally small grains with special properties. Another important focus of attention are new classes of materials which are not based on new compositions, but rather on the original and special crystalline structure in the nanoscale.

Book helps engineers looking at an introduction to Biology.......2002-11-28

I was an engineer and interested in learning about Biology. I went to a bookstore and browsed for 4 hours looking for a book that I could comprehend. Only two books fitted the bill - the first one is "Asking about Cells" by a Harvard Professor and the second one is "An Introduction to Genetic Analysis" by Griffith, published by whfreeman. I purchased both the books and I find that they are both good. It helps to read the "Asking about Cells" to put more detailed cellular functions in Griffith's book in perspective. Also, check out the "DNA from the Beginning" tutorial published free online by Cold Spring Harbor Labs. It also gives a glimpse of what is in store.

The main purpose of the book is to remove any phobia one might have towards biology. It neatly explains that Biologists do not know everything about cells (a common misconception of non-biologists). It also shows how they know as much as they know today. Finally, it has passionate interviews from the researchers who say why they continue to do biology daily.

The material is basic enough to be followed, at the same time, informative enough to go to the next level - understanding how genes work. I myself have now become a researcher in biology, thanks to this book. If you have never done biology ever in your life, this book is for you.

What a Great Textbook.......2003-01-29

I don't usually review (or even read) textbooks. However, in researching a forthcoming book, I've spent a lot of time with Tobin and Dushek's Asking About Life. It's made my life much easier.

As those who are familiar with Asking About Life know, this is a textbook with a philosophy. That philosophy is to present biology not as a canonical set of facts about life, but as a dynamic, ongoing dialogue with nature, in which real people who happen to be scientists ask meaningful questions and take understandable steps over time to discover answers to them. The book mixes an engaging narrative style, a strong historical perspective, great examples, and authoritative factual knowledge into an eminently readable, extremely informative, and scientifically impeccable text. As a result, a student or reader can turn to this book not simply to learn about the structure of DNA or how the human immune system functions, but also about Rosalind Franklin's role in discovering the double helix and about why HIV "continues to perplex medical researchers." And, as shown by the book's section headings (How Do Zygotes Cleave? How Does Gastrulation Set Up the Three-Layered Structure?), it embodies the truth that the best scientific questions start not with "what" but with "how."

I used this book for my AP biology course. Thanks to this book, it let me got 5 on the AP exam. I'm homeschooled, I learnt biology myself,well, maybe not cause this book taught me all of the materials to score high on biology.I'm glad I used this book.
By the way, the supplementary CD is very helpful,so if you buy this text, i suggest you also to buy that CD.

Well I'm not a book reviewer. I'm really not a book reader either. I did read this book though and felt the need to let others know it is not just for teens. This book answers some tough questions about life. You will find answers about the death penalty, abortion, "mercy-killing", war, and creation/evolution.

Here is what I like about this book. You get several points of views for the answers to the tough questions. All the view points are well reasoned to a conclusion. If you are like me and like to know how and why things are the way they are; I know you will enjoy this book. Along the way you'll find yourself learning some history, some doctrine, and why people get plastic surgery.

For a person who reads mostly white papers about Computer Forensics and Information Security, this book is a refreshing change. Certainly I feel that it was time well spent. It's not just for teens.
