The Fourth Dimension
The Next Level of Personal and Organizational Achievement
As the latest wave of corporate downsizing, streamlining, and reengineering initiatives continues to mount in intensity, the traditional employer-employee relationship is experiencing a massive shakeup, and a new work paradigm is struggling to be born. At the same time that employers are finding that they can no longer offer the traditional carrots of job security and lavish compensation packages, they are coming to recognize the need to forge closer partnerships with their employees-partnerships defined by shared risks, responsibilities, and rewards. But a paradigm shift of this magnitude cannot occur without considerable effort on the parts of both employers and employees. Such a successful fusion of personal and organizational visions requires a radical change in attitudes, expectations, and work patterns, and those who are quickest to make those changes are sure to be the big winners in the years ahead.
The Fourth Dimension provides a comprehensive program for managers challenged to do more with less and individuals seeking to improve the quality of their worklives. It offers proven techniques to help you excel in the three primary work dimensions outlined in the authors' acclaimed MetaWork System(TM):
* PowerWork(TM): efficiency, effectiveness, and the achievement of the right results
* NetWork(TM): sharing competence and knowledge with others and developing more dynamic working relationships
* ValueWork(TM): achieving more frequent breakthroughs in performance and value added based on individual and group ideas
You'll learn how to integrate these three primary dimensions into an incredibly potent Fourth Dimension, a newly defined workspace within which individuals, teams, and entire companies continually exceed their best hopes and expectations.
Throughout The Fourth Dimension, the authors provide vivid real-life illustrations of the astonishing results that have been achieved with the techniques they describe. Personal profiles of leaders such as Rebecca Matthias of Mothers Work and Steve Wiggins of Oxford Health Plans, as well as case studies of top companies, including Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, and Microsoft, lead you to a fuller understanding of the revolutionary changes now reshaping the work world and how many of today's business leaders have learned to use fourth dimensional thinking to gain the competitive edge.
Offering a complete program for achieving higher levels of performance by combining personal and organizational vision, The Fourth Dimension is must reading for executives, managers, team leaders, entrepreneurs, and virtually anyone interested in achieving a more fulfilling and meaningful destiny in the postindustrial work world.

Customer Reviews:
Don't buy this.......2007-04-11
I don't write reviews, it usually bores me but this time i thought i had some responsibility in writing my impressions about this book.
I'll be brief, this book is simply useless. It talks about a lot of worthless details which don't get you anywhere but never explains the basis mechanisms of ETFs. I am writing a thesis on ETFs so i read a lot of ETF manuals and I can honestly say this book was the worst by far. I'm not saying it doesnt give you any info, but I think you can find every info of this book in any other ETF book. Moreover, it's the most expensive, I really don't get how the author dare asking so much for such an incomplete and irrelevant work.
Now this was my contribution to the Amazon community, I hope i prevented some people of wasting 50$ ...

Book Description
"What is this strange book" asks Fedwa Malti-Douglas, "that can bring the American presidency to its knees?" In this probing study of Kenneth W. Starr's influential and historic work, she reveals how The Starr Report exposed the cultural tendencies, desires, and taboos of Americans while it disrobed the most powerful man in the world.
Unveiling the political and ideological implications of the report's relentless pursuit of corporeal and prurient detail, Malti-Douglas underscores the document's ground-breaking nature -- both for its legal and cultural content. What does the report imply about American values when it repeatedly points to the dates on which trysts occurred? Why does gender seem so unstable in the report? And how do such varied objects as Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass or Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon or a Hugo Boss tie or Vox, a novel about phone sex, fit into the legal discourse of the report? Fraught with assumptions about gender and sexuality, the report reflects a strategy to use Clinton's "body natural" to undermine his "body politic."

Book Description
Offering a comprehensive introduction to European geography, this timely text is as authoritative as it is richly nuanced and engaging. The authors analyze the ongoing process of integration that is giving new meaning to the idea of being European, while also delineating the important subregional differences that exist among the continent's people and places. Coverage encompasses the entire region: its physical setting and environment; population and migration; work and leisure; language and religion; and political organization. Particular attention is given to the historic evolution and contemporary features of the urban environments in which the majority of Europeans live their daily lives. Combining vivid description,up-to-date information, and cogent analysis, the text is illustrated with 200 photographs and over 45 maps.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Textbook - but it *is* a textbook!.......2006-04-17
I bought this textbook to get a more comprehensive look at European Geography, and was not disappointed. Europe, of course, has an enormous volume of recorded history, so it is quite a challenge to sort through and select only the most relevant points for a regional textbook. I believe that the authors do a nice job of explaining key points to someone who is not very familiar with European history (i.e. they do not go into tremendous depth, but outline major points in history and particularly migration trends). As such, I think this book is quite appropriate for college undergraduates who often do not have a solid background in basic European history. More importantly, though, the book addresses contemporary issues facing Europe as a whole, such as the development of the European Union, the rapidly aging population, and ongoing concerns over immigration.
My complaints about the book are minimal. (1) It is definitely a textbook, in that it is written like a textbook. (i.e. Don't expect it to be a gripping page-turner.) I found some chapters to be dry reading. However, I have a deep interest in geography, which served as my motivation to keep going. (2) The pictures and maps in the paperback I bought are in black and white, which is a terrible shame. The maps are difficult to read, and the grayscale versions of the pictures do not do a good job of depicting what the authors are trying to show. I would gladly spend the extra money for a color version.
Overall, I definitely recommend this textbook. Ostergren and Rice are masters of their subject, and the depth of their knowledge about the region is excellent. I learned a lot!

supremely disturbing and genuinely frightening stuff.......2001-11-13
these stories go beyond your average collection of horror tales, and it isn't hard to tell that maupassant was going over the edge when he penned these. they are less focused on the supernatural than on the chilling capability the human mind has to construct terrifying illusions and reduce the most rational and cerebral man to a shivering mass. you could almost call these philosophical in that maupassant remorselessly exposes the tenuous and fragile nature of our mental health and reminds us that insanity is a potential danger for the more thoughtful and sensitive. this is personally my favorite work as far as maupassant's stuff goes, and anyone with a taste for the morbid, pessimistic or terrifying is well advised to pick this one up right away, although it is pretty rare nowadays and difficult to locate. i took it out of my local library. those who are interested in the field of philosophy should enjoy the brief but somewhat humorous tale, "the smile of schopenhauer", which amuses but at the same time inspires fear. if you're interested in abnormal psychology this is also a must read for you. the creme de la creme of horror literature.
The most horrifying work of the greatest short story writer.......1999-05-04
DeMaupassant's unparalled insight into the human condition is strongly in evidence in these tales. Some of the most powerful evocations of fear and pathos even penned, this is in a completely different league from Stephen King and his ilk: it is literature in the best sense.
This one will scare your brain!.......1998-08-13
De Maupassant wrote horror like no one else. His stories are not for the run of the mill Stephen King fan - so if your head isn't screwed down tight, don't attempt this one. However, if you like to hear the brilliant ramblings of a genius-type that's dying of Syphillis, you'll love it!
Excellent unusual, fantastic & mind crawling stories.......1997-02-27
This collection of Guy De Maupassant is
fast interesting reading.
The stories delve into the human mind which leads us
on strange paths that take unusual twists and turns
as we experience De Maupassant narratives.
All of us are exposed to various stressful situations
in our lives that could lead to madness, wrong perception
of the facts and fear such as he follows in his
tales which are very cleverly written.
This book can be enjoyed at any time, set down and
picked up time and again.

Book Description
This engaging biography is the first to tell the tragic love story of the royal couple against the changing background of nineteenth century Germany.
Customer Reviews:
Very Sad Story-But Good.......2003-07-24
Dearest Vicky Darling Fritz was a very interesting book and also very informative. When reading it I felt very sad for Vicky and Fritz for all the things they had to go threw, such as children who made trouble for them, a minister who did not like them, Fritz's father who would not give them the respect they diserved, and to top it off Fritz's death of cancer four months after becoming Kaiser Fredrick III.
There are better books out there........2002-06-01
This was fairly interesting and well written, but for a good, thorough biography of Princess Vicky, "An Uncommon Woman" is a far better choice. On the other hand, if you are looking for a fairly brief overview of her life and loves, this book will spare you the extreme detail found in "Uncommon Woman."
Poor Vicky.......2002-01-25
It was a rarity indeed that a royal marriage would be a happy one; that was never the idea of alliances such as the one between Victoria, Princess Royal, and Crown Prince Frederich of Prussia--but a happy marriage is exactly what they had. A partnership between a good man and an exceptionally intelligent, perceptive, loving woman. Vicky was maligned in her adopted country, gossiped about, belittled, and ultimately emotionally abused by her two eldest children, but she remained a remarkable woman nonetheless. This is a fascinating book about a devoted couple.

"It is an extraordinary coincidence," writes English physiologist Frances Ashcroft, "that the highest peak on Earth is also about the highest point at which humans can survive unaided." A coincidence, to be sure, and, like many other milestones of the limits of human endurance, one known to us through the joint efforts of scientists, mountain climbers, explorers, and athletes.
Ashcroft's book is a thoroughly engaging survey of those limits and their origins in the nature of things, of what happens to human beings in the most difficult environmental conditions. She writes, for instance, of why it is that astronauts have trouble standing after returning to Earth (because, in part, their leg muscles quickly atrophy outside of terrestrial gravity); of how the famed Japanese pearl divers condition themselves to attain such extraordinary underwater depths; of how and why the consumption of carbohydrates and caffeine can improve athletic performance; of why British children so easily suffer heat exhaustion on trips to such semitropical venues as, say, Disneyworld, whereas young Saudis can tolerate much higher temperatures (but would likely not thrive in an English winter).
Backed by extensive field research--the author has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, sweated it out in Japanese hot tubs, and run after her share of buses--as well as by a wealth of laboratory studies, Ashcroft's book is of great appeal to anyone who wishes to test the world's limits--or their own. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
The challenge of scaling the highest mountain, exploring the deepest ocean, crossing the hottest desert, or swimming in near-freezing water is irresistible to many people. Life at the Extremes is an engrossing exploration of what happens to our bodies in these seemingly uninhabitable environments. Frances Ashcroft weaves stories of extraordinary feats of endurance with historical material and the latest scientific findings as she investigates the limits of human survival and the remarkable adaptations that enable us to withstand extreme conditions.
What causes mountain sickness? How is it possible to reach the top of Everest without supplementary oxygen, when passengers in an airplane that depressurized at the same altitude would lose consciousness in seconds? Why do divers get the bends but sperm whales do not? How long you can survive immersion in freezing water? Why don't penguins get frostbite? Will men always be faster runners than women? How far into deep space can a body travel?
As she considers these questions, Ashcroft introduces a cast of extraordinary scientific personalities--inventors and explorers who have charted the limits of human survival. She describes many intriguing experiments and shows how scientific knowledge has enabled us to venture toward and beyond ever greater limits. Life at the Extremes also considers what happens when athletes push their bodies to the edge, and tells of the remarkable adaptations that enable some organisms to live in boiling water, in highly acidic lakes, or deep in the middle of rocks.
Anyone who flies in an airplane, sails the high seas, goes skiing or walking in the mountains, or simply weathers subzero winters or sweltering summers will be captivated by this book. Full of scientific information, beautifully written, and packed with many fascinating digressions, Life at the Extremes lures us to the very edge of human survival.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding and accessible science book.......2003-07-24
I have always been fascinated with this topic, and this book opened my eyes to all kinds of interesting aspects of adaptation of animals (especially humans) to extreme conditions. Particularly interesting to me were the chapters on altitude and depth. Examples and sidebars were well chosen and well explained. I have used information from the book in lectures to students of physiology. Highly recommended.
Deceptive description, but still a good read.......2003-05-30
This book appealed to my inner nerd, and helped me understand from a physiological standpoint what is happening during when the body is put to the extreme test. It doesn't talk about when people are placed in extreme situations, which was the part I found pretty deceptive. But Dr. Ashcroft is an anatomy professor - that should have been my big clue. Still, a good read if you've got an interest in anatomy and physiology.
Almost An Adventure Book.......2002-04-16
I must admit that I was fooled by the description of this book on the dusk jacket. What I thought I was buying was a book that detailed what happened to individual people in extreme conditions, in space, tops of mountains etc. What the book provided me was a description of what happens to the human body in these extreme conditions. Overall the information was interesting, but this is not a book that would fall into the action / adventure category. You do not get the drama or tension of actual people being put in harms way. The book is well written, even in the parts that are medical descriptions. If you are interested in what happens to someone in extreme conditions or as a reference book next time you are reading an action / adventure book then this is the book for you.
What The Future May Bring.......2001-02-28
An amazing book for people who are into the possibility of extraterrestrial life and also those who fear that the demise of our own ecosystem will lead to an end to life on our planet as we know it. The best thing you can tell someone who insist life cannot exist outside our biosphere is "vent fish", these fish that live 5000 feet deep on the ocean floor where there is no light and the only source of food is the sulfur blowing from volcanic vents. This book is all about life in the harshest of places. This line from the introduction: "Environmental extremes are not the prerogative of the adventurous few - with the help of technology, all of us can tolerate severe conditions with equanimity." reminds me of the movie "True Stories" where John Goodman asked God to do something about all these malls and parking lots, so God created people who love malls and parking lots!!! Life At The Extremes might be a how-to guide to this uncertain future we are blindly racing into... It's a must read for environmentalists and ufologists alike. Remy C.
This is an excellent book for the curious-minded!.......2001-01-13
If you have ever wondered EXACTLY why and how humans get altitude sickness, what happens to the body when exposed to extreme heat or cold, why scuba divers sometime get the "bends," or what would happen to an astronaut if the Space Station developed a leak, this book is for you. Frances M. Ashcroft explains in complete detail - the detail that is so often lacking in the popular, dumbed-down modern media - why the body at high altitudes can't get the oxygen it needs, what happens to skin cells when you burn yourself or get frostbite, how nitrogen dissolves in your blood when diving deep in water, or how your blood would boil if exposed to the emptiness of space.
And she doesn't stop with humans. She examines the extremes of the animal world for creatures able to withstand and thrive in boiling cauldrons, the extreme depths of the oceans, or the extreme cold of Antarctica.
She presents not just a world of creatures living in incredible environments, but precise descriptions of how this is all accomplished. This makes for Really Amazing reading!
Book Description
The range of environments in which people can survive is extensive, yet most of the natural world cannot support human life. The Biology of Human Survival identifies the key determinants of life or death in extreme environments from a physiologist's perspective, integrating modern concepts of stress, tolerance, and adaptation into explanations of life under Nature's most austere conditions. The book examines how individuals survive when faced with extremes of immersion, heat, cold or altitude, emphasizing the body's recognition of stress and the brain's role in optimizing physiological function in order to provide time to escape or to adapt. In illustrating how human biology adapts to extremes, the book also explains how we learn to cope by blending behavior and biology, first by trial and error, then by rigorous scientific observation, and finally by technological innovation. The book describes life-support technology and how it enables humans to enter once unendurable realm, from the depths of the ocean to the upper reaches of the atmosphere and beyond. Finally, it explores the role that advanced technology might play in special environments of the future, such as long journeys into space.
Customer Reviews:
Academic and excellent.......2007-01-10
A fascinating look at what happens to the human body in extreme environments. Clear explanations of dehydration, hypothermia and starvation. Lots of wonderful factoids and anecdotes. An academic book, but I found it well worth the effort.
Understanding your limits.......2003-10-01
This is a scholarly work which is accessible to lay readers while informative to trained physiologists. The language is polished, well edited and communicates easily. The chapter length is convenient to a 20-30 minute session making this rather slender volume very enjoyable to read as pleasure. Its well documented material makes it wonderfully informative. Many excellent reports of heroic and sometimes tragic outcomes of man's intrepid adventures. The topics cover everything from the ocean depths (pressure and cold) to deserts to outer space. A great read.
