Very helpful in learning the subject.......2002-06-15
If you build all of the spreadsheets in the book you will gain a great deal of understanding about the subjects covered in the book and will be miles ahead of the calculator-based approach typical in today's classrooms. No professionals use calculators to figure duration or convexity or optimal portfolios, why should you? This is a very needed book and a nice approach to the subject.
I like this version of the book MUCH better than the Fundamentals version. But that is my preference; pick the book that is right for you. They are both very good. I intend to get more in the series.

The Law Is For All: The Authorized Popular Commentary of Liber Al Vel Legis Sub Figura CCXX, the Book of the Law
Aleister Crowley Manufacturer: Thelema Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0972658386 |
Book Description
Crowley's life and thought are inexorably linked with 'The Book of the Law.' He received this visionary work by direct-voice dictation in Cairo in 1904. As an intelligent sceptic, he first found this improbable means of communication difficult to accept. Yet he could not ignore it or its message. He worked for decades to interpret its meaning for initiates and the general public. Eventually he entrusted the task to his best friend, Louis Wilkinson who possessed impressive literary qualifications. The result of his work, completed and augmented by Frater Superior Hymenaeus Beta of the O.T.O., is this long-awaited authorized popular edition of Crowley's "new commentary" on 'The Book of the Law' and its first appearance as Crowley wished it.Customer Reviews:

Be Careful: but still lots of enlightening fun ..........2003-12-12
However, this stuff can be a little TOO exciting. One can't guarantee what such things do to an average mind -and life- like mine was (is ?) Just like one can have initial disasters from playing around with Tarot cards, or magick and occultism in general, read Aleister Crowley with caution! (I.e., W E Butler writes in his book 'The Magician,' that those interested in studying magic read rather alot of other books first (he gives a list.) Then he asserts, one may be able to "deal selectively" with Crowley's writings.
Take it from one who has been reading Crowley for 20-plus years: Butler's is good advice !!! Israel Regardie, Dion Fortune, Franz Hartmann and others are to be recommended before soaking oneself in too much Crowley, too quickly.
In any event, I suspect this volume to be rather sanitized, if it is as edited as people say. Fortunately, much of it can be read online, from another edition. And it is still useful and convenient to have some of the Commentary in this bound form.
What I personally did, was get a hold of a copy of a larger edition of the same material, edited by Kenneth Grant and John Symonds. I photocopied this rare (hardcover)edition from a friend, and added the missing pages from my Regardie edition of 'Law is for All', as published by Falcon Press in the early 80s. I might recommend that those interested, do the same, if they can, to make sure they get as much of the Commentary as might be authentic.

Managing Soil Fertility in the Tropics: A Resource Guide for Participatory Learning and Action Research
Manufacturer: Koninklijk Instituut Voor de Tropen ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9068321285 |
Book Description
This resource guide is based on extensive work done in several African countries. It is intended to provide user-friendly ways to gather, manage and analyze information and data by applying participatory learning and action research, and to suggest ways to use this knowledge to develop strategies for integrated soil fertility management. This set constitutes a tool kit. It includes a textbook (Part 1); a collection of cases that explore field experiences with participatory learning and action research (PLAR) (Part 2); a set of all-weather Field Tools on laminated cards (Part 3); a CD-ROM including a software package to assist in analyzing data (Part 4); and a manual with detailed versions of the Field Tools plus a User's Guide to the software (Part 5).
This resource guide aims to democratize knowledge. PLAR is an agricultural extension strategy, a methodology with experimentation and discovery at its heart. It promotes mutual learning that increases understanding among farmers, extension workers and researchers. Though this book is about soil fertility management, its approach is applicable to farmer based plant pest and disease control or management of biodiversity. PLAR starts with the farmer's knowledge and ability to observe. Socio-economic circumstances (e.g. resource availability) and gender concerns are built into the process, and are reflected in farming practices that each individual participant decides to explore.
The main aim of the set is to give field workers practical advice on how to work with farmers to improve soil fertility management. It will also help field practitioners facilitate positive changes within farming communities.

The Ice: A Journey to Antarctica

As dense as the ice shield..........2003-08-25
I suspect that this book will remain unsurpassed for being an all encompassing tome on Antarctica for decades, possibly even centuries ... maybe even until we emerege from this interglacial period and the Western Ice sheet melts, thus giving up the secrets to climate control and Antarctica. I can't imagine much has been left out at all - Pyne is unbelievably, incredibly thorough. Every facet of the ice, and every facet he could think to associate with ice has been methodically slotted into this book. And if he ran out of talking about anything to do with the ice, he'd talk about Antarctica.
But this book is very, very, very, VERY heavy going. I set myself a goal of 25 pages/night - but it still took 2 months to read... Sometimes, I just had to take a break. And as I ploughed ever onwards, I constantly wondered, 'how would someone be able to read this if they hadn't actually been to Antactica???' And other times, I even qualified that with a "would anyone really understand this if they weren't a geologist or in a similar field?' I mean, Pyne can be descriptive, but at other times, adjectives seem to be insufficient, so he swoops into heavy scientific jargon.
I also missed having some diagrams. A few 'colour' photos even... (Ok, colour is a bit misleading - its all white, blue and grey down there...). Antarctica is so stark and sparse, that sometimes, it is just better to look at a photograph of the deep glacier blue of ice (well, actually, WHY ice is blue was something Pyne overlooked in this book, now I think of it! Rainbows and bubbles people...), or a vast plain of continental ice, or the weird solar and weather patterns that can pervade above the ice...
If you can't make it down to Antarctica, but want to become an authority on it, then you can go no further than this book. If wading through the heaviest and densest book written in a long time is something you will need to build up to, the maybe start with something like, Antarctica: The Blue Continent, and see if you want to progress from there - at least then you will have some pictures in mind of what to expect when Pyne melts into deep prose...

Two Phase Flows and Waves (Ima Volumes in Mathematics and Its Applications)
Daniel D. Joseph Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387972935 |
Book Description
This Workshop, held from January 3-10, 1989 at IMA, focused on the properties of materials which consist of many small particles or grains. These include granular materials, in which the particles interact through direct contact, and suspensions or two phase materials, in which particles interact through the influence of the surrounding viscous fluids. Such materials are important in many industrial and geological applications, especially fluidized beds. This volume contains ad vanced scientific papers in this rapidly developing subject by authors from several different disciplines (e.g., engineering, physics, mathematics). Some papers attempt to derive continuum constitutive behavior from micromechanics. Others analyze theoretically or solve numerically the partial differential equations which result when an ad hoc constitutive law is assumed. Experimental phenomena exhibited by such materials are reported in other papers. Still other consider the application to fluidized beds.

Unlike the NAACP's Crisis and the Urban League's Opportunity, The Messenger--the literary arm of legendary labor leaders A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen--was not linked with any African American civil rights organization. The two men created the publication after they were fired from their hotel jobs for questioning unfair union practices. Overtly socialist in nature, The Messenger ran from 1917 to 1928 and claimed to be "the only magazine of scientific radicalism in the world published by Negroes." As this wide-ranging anthology shows, the journal practiced equal-opportunity criticism. Owen's "Failure of Negro Leadership" takes issue with W.E.B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson, and Archibald Grimke for their advocacy of Negro participation in World War I. Randolph's "Reply to Marcus Garvey" and "The Negro in Politics" expose the philosophical flaws of the famous race leader's movement and express a lack of faith in the U.S. two-party political system. But the real gems of this reader lie in its impressive array of poetry, fiction, and plays from such luminaries as Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and Zora Neale Hurston. As editor Sondra Kathryn Wilson writes, the magazine "unequivocally made socialistic economics and politics a priority of culture." --Eugene Holley Jr.Book Description
The Messenger was the third most popular magazine of the Harlem Renaissance after The Crisis andOpportunity. Unlike the other two magazines, The Messenger was not tied to a civil rights organization. Labor activist A. Philip Randolph and economist Chandler Owen started the magazine in 1917 to advance the cause of socialism to the black masses. They believed that a socialist society was the only one that would be free from racism.
