5 out of 5 stars The New Success Rules for Women: 10 Surefire Strategies.......2000-08-03

As President of The Association of Chicago Bank Women, I strongly recommend this book for both mid-career women and recent college graduates employed across all business sectors. The interviews provide thought-provoking insight into career strategies of seasoned veterans and the advice given is refreshingly down-to-earth. For example, Abrams shares the Pittsburgh Airport tip and dedicates a chapter "To thine own self be true"---common sense reminders in today's global business world. This book will be on every successful woman's desk who wants to go places in the New Millenium and is hereby endorsed by The Association of Chicago Bank Women.

5 out of 5 stars Craig W. Holden.......2004-07-06

Hi, I am Craig W. Holden, author of "Spreadsheet Modeling in Investments Book and CD-ROM" (the first edition). I just want to let you know that the second edition of this book is now available. It has been retitled as "Excel Modeling in Investments Book and CD-ROM (2nd Edition)." It includes everything that was in the first edition plus some new content. All of the examples and data have been updated to the present and all known typos have been corrected. The second edition strictly dominates the first edition and I strongly recommend it. Click on my name at the top of the page to locate it. Thanks for your consideration.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful in learning the subject.......2002-06-15

This is NOT a handy book of spreadsheet templates for use in finance. It IS a book to TEACH you about building spreadsheets for use in finance. The author has built dozens of very useful spreadsheets that he gives you step-by-step instructions on building and WHAT the step is about.

If you build all of the spreadsheets in the book you will gain a great deal of understanding about the subjects covered in the book and will be miles ahead of the calculator-based approach typical in today's classrooms. No professionals use calculators to figure duration or convexity or optimal portfolios, why should you? This is a very needed book and a nice approach to the subject.

I like this version of the book MUCH better than the Fundamentals version. But that is my preference; pick the book that is right for you. They are both very good. I intend to get more in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, Step by Step Explanations.......2001-08-08

The author's step-by-step explanations are great, and the issue coverage superb. The CD-Rom was a disappointment, however, as it contains simply the book text and graphics; I expected sample, working spreadsheets like that found in Benninga's Financial Modeling book. Despite the shortcoming, Holden's book is worth the money.

Book Description

Crowley's life and thought are inexorably linked with 'The Book of the Law.' He received this visionary work by direct-voice dictation in Cairo in 1904. As an intelligent sceptic, he first found this improbable means of communication difficult to accept. Yet he could not ignore it or its message. He worked for decades to interpret its meaning for initiates and the general public. Eventually he entrusted the task to his best friend, Louis Wilkinson who possessed impressive literary qualifications. The result of his work, completed and augmented by Frater Superior Hymenaeus Beta of the O.T.O., is this long-awaited authorized popular edition of Crowley's "new commentary" on 'The Book of the Law' and its first appearance as Crowley wished it.

3 out of 5 stars Three stars are not enough.......2007-08-05

This is it. The One that puts it All together. Every religion is One who is distinctly sepparately apart. The Bees Knees to the subjective fart.

5 out of 5 stars In More Plain Terms.......2005-11-12

This book is simply a collection of commentaries by Crowley himself on the meanings of each line to The Book of the Law. This proves useful to newbies when you are first taking the steps necessary to become a Thelemite, namely accepting The Book of the Law as your way of life. At first I got the basics that it was occult oriented and possibly a satanic philosophy as told through eloquent prose. You have to decide if this is right for you and that you want to do this.

3 out of 5 stars Oh for the Old Days!.......2005-08-14

This book is one of the better commentaries on the Book of the Law. Unfortunately it lacks much of the material found in the long out of print Magical and Philosophical Commenetaries on the Book of the Law ed Symonds and Grant 1975 and this new edition lacks the charm of the previous publication by New Falcon Press edited by Dr Israel Regardie. Unfortunately this is to be expected as we have fewer people who actually knew Crowley around to edit his books for us. However the new attempt by Mr Gary Breeze (frater ha) is a good jobbing introduction for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Must have along with The Book of the Law.......2004-04-28

This is a must have to understand The Book of the Law. This book has given me a new outlook on life. It has helped me change my thinking for the better and has helped me find my path. I highly reccommend reading this over and over again if you have read The Book of the Law. Something is sure to appeal to you. I am sure if you open yourself to the words in this book that it will do you a great deal of good. I only wish this was as popular as the bible is today. Maybe if it was more well known the world would truely be heaven on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Be Careful: but still lots of enlightening fun ..........2003-12-12

When I first read the Israel Regardie edition of THE LAW IS FOR ALL, my mind was essentially exploding in every direction. I was relatively inexperienced with reading (what were to me) such exciting pyrotechnics.

However, this stuff can be a little TOO exciting. One can't guarantee what such things do to an average mind -and life- like mine was (is ?) Just like one can have initial disasters from playing around with Tarot cards, or magick and occultism in general, read Aleister Crowley with caution! (I.e., W E Butler writes in his book 'The Magician,' that those interested in studying magic read rather alot of other books first (he gives a list.) Then he asserts, one may be able to "deal selectively" with Crowley's writings.

Take it from one who has been reading Crowley for 20-plus years: Butler's is good advice !!! Israel Regardie, Dion Fortune, Franz Hartmann and others are to be recommended before soaking oneself in too much Crowley, too quickly.

In any event, I suspect this volume to be rather sanitized, if it is as edited as people say. Fortunately, much of it can be read online, from another edition. And it is still useful and convenient to have some of the Commentary in this bound form.

What I personally did, was get a hold of a copy of a larger edition of the same material, edited by Kenneth Grant and John Symonds. I photocopied this rare (hardcover)edition from a friend, and added the missing pages from my Regardie edition of 'Law is for All', as published by Falcon Press in the early 80s. I might recommend that those interested, do the same, if they can, to make sure they get as much of the Commentary as might be authentic.

    Book Description

This resource guide is based on extensive work done in several African countries. It is intended to provide user-friendly ways to gather, manage and analyze information and data by applying participatory learning and action research, and to suggest ways to use this knowledge to develop strategies for integrated soil fertility management.

This set constitutes a tool kit. It includes a textbook (Part 1); a collection of cases that explore field experiences with participatory learning and action research (PLAR) (Part 2); a set of all-weather Field Tools on laminated cards (Part 3); a CD-ROM including a software package to assist in analyzing data (Part 4); and a manual with detailed versions of the Field Tools plus a User's Guide to the software (Part 5).

This resource guide aims to democratize knowledge. PLAR is an agricultural extension strategy, a methodology with experimentation and discovery at its heart. It promotes mutual learning that increases understanding among farmers, extension workers and researchers. Though this book is about soil fertility management, its approach is applicable to farmer based plant pest and disease control or management of biodiversity. PLAR starts with the farmer's knowledge and ability to observe. Socio-economic circumstances (e.g. resource availability) and gender concerns are built into the process, and are reflected in farming practices that each individual participant decides to explore.

The main aim of the set is to give field workers practical advice on how to work with farmers to improve soil fertility management. It will also help field practitioners facilitate positive changes within farming communities.

3 out of 5 stars As dense as the ice shield..........2003-08-25

Like the previous reviewer, I too quailed at the start of this book. Immediately I was plunged to half page paragraphs and dense terms, swimming between excessive description and dense science. But, I'm a geologist. I've been to Antarctica. I knew I could do it...

I suspect that this book will remain unsurpassed for being an all encompassing tome on Antarctica for decades, possibly even centuries ... maybe even until we emerege from this interglacial period and the Western Ice sheet melts, thus giving up the secrets to climate control and Antarctica. I can't imagine much has been left out at all - Pyne is unbelievably, incredibly thorough. Every facet of the ice, and every facet he could think to associate with ice has been methodically slotted into this book. And if he ran out of talking about anything to do with the ice, he'd talk about Antarctica.

But this book is very, very, very, VERY heavy going. I set myself a goal of 25 pages/night - but it still took 2 months to read... Sometimes, I just had to take a break. And as I ploughed ever onwards, I constantly wondered, 'how would someone be able to read this if they hadn't actually been to Antactica???' And other times, I even qualified that with a "would anyone really understand this if they weren't a geologist or in a similar field?' I mean, Pyne can be descriptive, but at other times, adjectives seem to be insufficient, so he swoops into heavy scientific jargon.

I also missed having some diagrams. A few 'colour' photos even... (Ok, colour is a bit misleading - its all white, blue and grey down there...). Antarctica is so stark and sparse, that sometimes, it is just better to look at a photograph of the deep glacier blue of ice (well, actually, WHY ice is blue was something Pyne overlooked in this book, now I think of it! Rainbows and bubbles people...), or a vast plain of continental ice, or the weird solar and weather patterns that can pervade above the ice...

If you can't make it down to Antarctica, but want to become an authority on it, then you can go no further than this book. If wading through the heaviest and densest book written in a long time is something you will need to build up to, the maybe start with something like, Antarctica: The Blue Continent, and see if you want to progress from there - at least then you will have some pictures in mind of what to expect when Pyne melts into deep prose...

      2 out of 5 stars Heorism - required.......2003-07-04

The planning to buy this book was detailed and meticulous. Consultations had to be held with interested parties (my sons) and the wait for it to arrive was lengthy - at least ten days.
It was with a sense of mounting excitement that we eagerly surveyed the flat white cover of the package, I could sense our goal. I knew it wasn't going to be easy traversing 428 pages of a book titled "The Ice" but I had completed intensive practical training for this expedition. I was a veteran of Huntsford's "Schackleton", Huxley's "Scott of the Antarctic", Fuchs & Hillary's "The Crossing of Antarctica", the list was long but rewarding. Here was my biggest challenge to date.
The warnings were stark right from the start, the prologue uses half a page to list 72 ways to name ice. I stumbled and nearly gave up. Willpower, only willpower kept me going. I was becoming word blind. Reaching my first goal, the middle, I could only contemplate with horror the trials still awaiting me. "Great God, this is an awful book", I thought as I turned the next page. I wondered if I had the stamina to make it, others before me must have faltered. My son looked at me, "I'm just going out, I may be some time". I could only admire his courage, at having come so far. I ploughed on, yet another reference to Admiral Byrd appeared on the horizon. Until now I had been unaware of his supreme importance as an American and Antarctic explorer. Similarly I had been foolishly unaware of the fact that "...there is nothing in the Heroic age to compare with Ellsworth's all-or-nothing transcontinental flight, even Schackleton turned back..." The fact that Ellsworth achieved precisely nothing is of no importance, he was an American.
Things were looking bleak, stamina was draining fast. A crevasse nearly finished me as I learned that TMW Turner (English) had painted sunsets. I began to lose hope, I was hallucinating, could he really mean JMW Turner who painted ships too, and trains ? It was my darkest hour, all hope was gone. I closed the book.
This is a book for the fanatical written by someone who equates flowery, overblown prose with literature, it is so bad it is almost a parody. If you want to read about the modern Antarctic, read Sara Wheeler's polar classic "Terra Incognita". The best place for Pyne's tome is on an iceberg, drifting slowly out of sight towards the equator.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to read but you still can't seem to get enough........1998-08-31

Stephen Pyne is a difficult writer, but the depth and meticulous nature of his intelligence pulls you back to him even though you tell yourself to lighten up and read a good mystery. Three cheers to university presses (U of Iowa and U of Washington) for putting and keeping this book in print. The Ice touches on everything about Antarctica: the history, the landscape, the literature, the geology, the biology. The book is all-encompassing--as is The Ice that is its focus and deep passion. It's worth the effort, and your vocabulary will never be the same afterwards. You can read a mystery later.

      Book Description

Blending historical, scientific, and literary scholarship with an impressive range of poetic forms, Melinda Mueller masterfully brings us the legendary tale of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic Expedition. What the Ice Gets is an adventure story, a requiem, and a love poem written to 28 heroes and the mythic landscape they set out to explore but that instead explored them.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Overwhelming story, finely crafted.......2002-11-08

The Shackleton story is amazing, but this accounting of it is stunningly thought through and executed. Read it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A stanza may be worth ten thousand words of prose........2001-07-28

This is a case where the economy of a well-crafted poetic line accomplishes what might take a page of prose. The imagery and emotion evoked by this slim volume more than capture the beauty and desperation experienced by Shackleton and his company. No space is wasted on mundane logistical cataloging and diary-keeping. Instead the reader is in the grip of perilous nature from beginning to end. The final section sketching the fate of the men after their great adventure on the ice shows that miraculously overcoming one peril does not innoculate you against life's other afflictions.

5 out of 5 stars Shackleton Brought to Life.......2000-12-01

This epic poem brings Shackleton's attempt to reach the South Pole to life! Some of the chapters tell the story from the point of view of individual members of the expedition; some describe particular events. Each fact is documented. Its one thing to know that Shackleton and a part of the crew left the rest of the crew behind, and travelled 800 miles in a dory on a rescue mission. Mueller brings the situation to life, describing the plight of both the rescuers and the rescuees. And then, in a moving and haunting conclusion, she tells of some of the individual's lives after the voyage. In sum, its an adventurist's story, a naturalist's story, a poet's story. A book you will want to reread, read out loud, and give to your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Artwork! .......2007-06-11

This book is good for the kids, it skips some of the material covered in the movie to keep it short. The movie is great too.

                        Book Description

This Workshop, held from January 3-10, 1989 at IMA, focused on the properties of materials which consist of many small particles or grains. These include granular materials, in which the particles interact through direct contact, and suspensions or two phase materials, in which particles interact through the influence of the surrounding viscous fluids. Such materials are important in many industrial and geological applications, especially fluidized beds. This volume contains ad vanced scientific papers in this rapidly developing subject by authors from several different disciplines (e.g., engineering, physics, mathematics). Some papers attempt to derive continuum constitutive behavior from micromechanics. Others analyze theoretically or solve numerically the partial differential equations which result when an ad hoc constitutive law is assumed. Experimental phenomena exhibited by such materials are reported in other papers. Still other consider the application to fluidized beds.

                          Book Description

This graduate text provides a unified treatment of the fundamental principles of two-phase flow and shows how to apply the principles to a variety of homogeneous mixture as well as separated liquid-liguid, gas-solid, liquid-solid, and gas-liquid flow problems, which may be steady or transient, laminar or turbulent.

Each chapter contains several sample problems, which illustrate the outlined theory and provide approaches to find sumplified analytic descriptions of complex two-phase flow phenomena.

This well-balanced introductory text will be suitable for advanced seniors and graduate students in mechanical, chemical, biomedical, nuclear, environmental and aerospace engineering, as well as in applied mathematics and the physical sciences. It will be a valuable reference for practicing engineers and scientists. A solutions manual is available to qualified instructors.

Unlike the NAACP's Crisis and the Urban League's Opportunity, The Messenger--the literary arm of legendary labor leaders A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen--was not linked with any African American civil rights organization. The two men created the publication after they were fired from their hotel jobs for questioning unfair union practices. Overtly socialist in nature, The Messenger ran from 1917 to 1928 and claimed to be "the only magazine of scientific radicalism in the world published by Negroes." As this wide-ranging anthology shows, the journal practiced equal-opportunity criticism. Owen's "Failure of Negro Leadership" takes issue with W.E.B. Du Bois, James Weldon Johnson, and Archibald Grimke for their advocacy of Negro participation in World War I. Randolph's "Reply to Marcus Garvey" and "The Negro in Politics" expose the philosophical flaws of the famous race leader's movement and express a lack of faith in the U.S. two-party political system. But the real gems of this reader lie in its impressive array of poetry, fiction, and plays from such luminaries as Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and Zora Neale Hurston. As editor Sondra Kathryn Wilson writes, the magazine "unequivocally made socialistic economics and politics a priority of culture." --Eugene Holley Jr.

                                Book Description

The Messenger was the third most popular magazine of the Harlem Renaissance after The Crisis andOpportunity. Unlike the other two magazines, The Messenger was not tied to a civil rights organization. Labor activist A. Philip Randolph and economist Chandler Owen started the magazine in 1917 to advance the cause of socialism to the black masses. They believed that a socialist society was the only one that would be free from racism.

The socialist ideology of The Messenger "the only magazine of scientific radicalism in the world published by Negroes," was reflected in the pieces and authors published in its pages. The Messenger Reader contains poetry, stories, and essays from Paul Robeson, Zora Neale Hurston, Wallace Thurman, and Dorothy West.

The Messenger Reader, will be a welcome addition to the critically acclaimed Modern Library Harlem Renaissance series.
