Exercises for the physically challenged.......2002-07-01
When I was first challenged to read "The Portable Coach," I cringed. I don't do physical exercise; therefore, I don't need a coach. However, as I read the book I realized that we need to exercise every part of our lives, not just our physical beings. Lori Enos provides a expert guide on how to get your entire life geared up for success.
When life throws you a curve, the exercises in "The Portable Coach" will help you deal with life and come out a winner.
Live your life the way you want.......2002-05-26
When I first heard the title, the Portable Coach, I had visions of a very small glass coach, à la Cinderella, small enough to fit in your pocket. This is your own personal life coach, helping you to visualise what you want and how to get it.
It's a self-help book with a difference, all the exercises in the book have actually been done by the author and they have worked for her. In each section there is an introduction before each exercise and then there is a workbook format so that you can fill in the answers there and then. No more hunting around for a piece of paper in order to get the full value of the book. Everything is inlcuded to get you started working on your goals. There are also some real life examples from the author, which really put things in perspective.
It's written in a friendly, down to earth manner, almsot as if you had a friend in the room with you to help you figure out where you are in life, where you want to go and how to achieve this. I like that this book is geared towards the fact that you have to help yourself, no-one else is going to do it for you. You want that great new job? Write the resume and apply. Go looking for opportunity, don't wait for it to come to you.
A great book if you need some help in getting started on changing things in order to have the life you really want.

"The Portable Coach is something we all should work through on a regular basis to keep us on track. Set up in sections, starting with Self-Knowledge, Enos asks questions to get you thinking and there are lots of forms fill in and just think about...it is worth the time and effort needed to put into it."

One of the Better Do-It-Yourself Programs.......2002-05-25
"Non-fiction, THE PORTABLE COACH has one of the better do-it-yourself programs for those wanting to achieve the best possible lives for themselves. It doesn't preach, gives no written-in-stone answers for those who feel like they are running in place, but it does give the serious reader the tools to transform themselves in the way best suited to their skills, ambitions, and dreams. Not only has the author provided assessment tools, she has also provided a handy workbook so there is no need to keep a separate journal as each exercise is completed.
If you are at a crisis point and need some direction, THE PORTABLE COACH just might be the road map you need. It is easy to read, full of examples, and well organized."

The format, on a computer disk, was an exciting presentation for me, BUT, on the pages where the exercises were outlined, where the lines were presented on which to do your exercise, the program had a read-only, no-write restriction. Not to be daunted, I printed the book to paper so I could do the exercises. Too bad, paragraphs overlapped paragraphs, lines of type printed on top of other lines of type. I never determined if the book/disc was at all useful in content, because the format was so very useless. Better luck next time.

Book Description
Most people dream about someday owning a business, but dreams are often no match for the reality of the red tape and regulations involved in actually getting a business up and running. Small Time Operator shows the way. The most popular start-up guide ever written, it covers every aspect of small business ownership, including getting the proper permits and licenses; financing; choosing a location; creating an effective business plan; whether or not to incorporate; recordkeeping; setting up a bookkeeping system; hiring employees; insurance; federal, state, and local taxes; dealing with the IRS; franchises; doing business on the internet; and much more. This new edition has been updated to reflect current changes in the tax code and business management principles. Clearly written and fun to read, the book breaks down the seemingly complex process of opening a business into a simple step-by-step procedure — and helps turn the small business dream into reality.

Major league advice for small timers..........2007-08-06
This book's reputation proceeded it and I found it to be all I was expecting. It is thorough without getting lost in unnecessary detail, and when more is needed, or advice specific to a region or subject, he leaves the reader with clear guidance on where it can be found.
As a self-employed contractor, designer, millwork and furniture maker, my 37 years of experience has born out all his advice and I have made my share of - if not all - the mistakes he warns of. And done some of the right things. He comes as close as I've found so far to a source of advice on not just what's right to do, but what's practical, what's realistic and (even) what people can get away with.
I will be using "Small Time Operator" as an adjunct text for the cabinetshop management classes I teach at our local community college.
Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16
The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.
Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.

Has good practical information that the typical small business owner needs.

I've bought and given away several copies of previous editions of this book over the years. I just ordered this new edition because previous editions have been full of practical advice on setting up a business and giving it a good start. It's also a lot of fun to read, believe it or not! Not sure about newer versions..........2006-02-23
I have a version of this book that my father in law purchased in 1993. I know quite about about small business topics, and I learned so much of the little missing items from this book. My father-in-law has a million of these books on starting a small business, which he loaned to us when we started ours.
I quickly put the others down after scanning through a few chapters and not finding much information. All the books seem to be on choosing names, locations, and "Starting" a business. I wanted more information on "Running" our business, which is exactly what I found.
I scanned through a few pages, and what I read was so great that I went back and started from the beginning and read every word I saw. I truly found this book to be the most informative and realistic book out there.
I haven't purchased a newer version, because I still use mine. Infact I re-read many of the chapters every week, they are still valuable to me. This book sits right on top of my filing shelves.
I did, however, purchase the software from the bell springs website yesterday.
I use quickbooks and also a written record (using accrual and cash methods) and balance them out together. I really liked the forms he uses in the back of his book, they are so simple, yet really cover everything I need. That is why I purchased the software so I could use them.
My opinion of this book is very high, simply I beleive it is the best I have ever found. (By the way, Bell Springs Publishing website has a money back guarantee also) We run a service shop now, I hope to open a small retail shop soon, and I will be using this book for that as well. In fact I already am, to figure out how I will set up all my information on a different type of business.
Small Time Operator.......2004-07-01
"Small Time Operator" by Bernard B. Kamoroff makes you wonder if he ever made it big or just remained small. I agree this is not the bible of business practices. However, the info isn't all that bad. It just lacks real meat.
Not particularly helpful.......2004-05-27
There are better books on how to start and run a business. This one is long on words and short on useful, practical information. Reads more like an accountant trolling for business by harping on complications than a genuine self-help book.
I bought based on the recommendation of a (well-written) book on self-publishing. Wish I'd read Amazon's comments first and spent my money elsewhere.
Not a BIBLE but a decent start........2004-04-25
First of all, let me say that I do not agree with the five star reviews nor do I agree with the 1 star reviews. That said, I feel this book is smack in between and does offer some useful information, especially for the newbie to business.
Five stars reviewers are too generous and 1 star reviewers are way too critical.
Good book and worth a read.

Book Description
During the Agricultural Revolution, the landowners of Britain carried out a great architectural experiment. Inspired by the Enlightenment ideals of beauty, utility and profit, they constructed an enormous range of picturesque or classical buildings on their farms.
These model farms, a phenomenon unique to Britain, are a significant yet largely undiscovered aspect of our heritage. In this book Susanna Wade Martins tells their story.
The book:
- is richly illustrated with interior and exterior photographs, most of them specially commissioned, as well as plans, paintings and historic photographs
- examines the architecture and landscape context of the farmsteads themselves, and considers the motives of the people who built them
- draws on the first comprehensive national survey of model farms, recently completed by English Heritage
- contains a county-by-county summary of the country's most important model farmsteads, enabling readers to explore them for themselves.
The English Model Farm provides the history enthusiast with a guide to the rich built heritage of the 'Age of Improvement'.

Long thought to be unique to the Baltic region, amber--fossilized tree sap, often bearing the remains of ancient plants and animals--is widely distributed throughout the world. Here entomologists George and Roberta Poinar take readers on a tour of one out-of-the-way amber bed, located in the rainforest of the Dominican Republic, that formed over a period between 45 and 15 million years ago. This particular amber, formed mostly from the pungent sap of the algarrobo tree, attracted many curious creatures, including stingless bees and scorpions, as well as bits and pieces of material that happened to be floating by: hairs from a long-extinct Antillean rhinoceros and a saber-toothed tiger, spider webs, and seeds from plants that now take on slightly different forms. The Poinars' findings show that the prehistoric Antilles region, formed from large-scale volcanic and tectonic events, has declined in biodiversity, and they help give a more complete picture of the ancient climate than has hitherto been available.
The Poinars catalog the Dominican remains in great detail, and general readers may find their descriptions to make for slow going. But readers with some knowledge of or interest in paleontology, as well as collectors of amber specimens, will likely be fascinated by the window into the distant past that the New World amber affords. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
In Jurassic Park, amber fossils provided the key to bringing dinosaurs back to life. Scientists in the movie extracted dinosaur blood from mosquitoes preserved for millions of years in amber--hardened tree resin--and used the blood's DNA to revive the creatures that terrified audiences around the globe. In this book, George and Roberta Poinar use amber for a similar act of revival--only they bring back an entire ecosystem. The Poinars are world leaders in the study of amber fossils and have spent years examining the uniquely rich supply that has survived from the ancient forests of the Dominican Republic. They draw on their research here to reconstruct in words, drawings, and spectacular color photographs the ecosystem that existed on the island of Hispaniola between fifteen and forty-five million years ago. The result is the most accurate picture scientists have yet produced of any tropical forest of the past.
The specimens examined by the Poinars reflect amber's extraordinary qualities as a medium for preservation. Millions of years ago, countless plants, invertebrates, and small vertebrates were trapped in the sticky resin that flowed from the trees of ancient forests and, as that resin hardened into translucent, golden amber, they were preserved in almost perfect condition. Samples analyzed and illustrated here include a wide range of insects and plants--many now extinct--as well as such vertebrates as frogs, lizards, birds, and small mammals. There are even frozen scenes of combat: an assassin bug grappling with a stingless bee, for example, and a spider attacking a termite. By examining these plants and animals and comparing them to related forms that exist today, the authors shed new light on the behavior of these organisms as well as the environment and climate in which they lived and died.
The Poinars present richly detailed drawings of how the forests once appeared. They discuss how and when life colonized Hispaniola and what caused some forms to become extinct. Along the way, they describe how amber is formed, how and where it has been preserved, and how it is mined, sold, and occasionally forged for profit today. The book is a beautifully written and produced homage to a remarkable, vanished world.
Customer Reviews:
Bob Newman's review explains everything.......2007-09-23
This is a phenomenal book which will present a very thorough, and brilliant, "lecture" all in a single book. The hard bound edition is beautiful, and is a book I will probably never sell, it is an excellent book!
It really is like sitting through an Ivy League lecture, though it isn't something many will find too difficult to follow (I hope. . .) It is a rare find.
I should note, most people overlook the hardbound editions, which are often cheaper than paperback :)
Bugs, Plants, Frogs in Sap Tip Us to Primeval Jungle.......2004-10-18
Millions of years ago, a meat-eating animal snuck through the primeval forest in what is now the Dominican Republic. Taking a short break in the shade of the towering canopy, it sat on some bamboo shoots which broke off in its fur. As the animal continued on its search for its next meal, the shoots began to irritate it. Growling (as I imagine), it rubbed up against an algarrobo tree. Some of the irritating plant fell out, along with one or two of the animal's hairs. These things fell into some resin or sap which exuded from the tree. The sap preserved them perfectly. Later the large drop of sap fell to the ground, was covered by debris which turned to earth, burying the sap completely. It lay there for a million or more years, then the ocean rose, taking the object to the bottom, where it was polished or preserved for more millions of years. Finally, due to the tectonic movements of the earth's plates, the ocean bottom where the (now) amber lay rose up into the mountains of an island. When Europeans arrived there in the tiny fragment of time known as "history" in this whole unbelievable span, they dug out the amber and found the preserved proof of that one moment in an animal's activities a possible 25 million years ago !
Poinar and Poinar have created a fascinating scientific work with their reconstruction of what the forest of that epoch looked like. Using the thousands of examples of plants, seeds, petals, leaves, pollen, insects, and frogs or lizards that fell into the tree sap and were preserved like time capsules, they describe the ancient jungle long before any man trod this earth. They rely on the principle of behaviorial fixity-that is, the idea that species that fill certain ecological niches today did so in the past as well. They describe dozens of strange creatures, mostly insects (because they were abundant and small enough to get trapped often) that inhabit today's tropical forests as well as those in the past. The majority of the book is devoted to describing as many organisms as possible with an enormous number of black and white photographs and line drawings to help your imagination. They also have a whole section of color photographs of the actual amber pieces. At the end there is a short reconstruction (or summary) of the whole vanished forest as well as an interesting discussion of climatic change and the reason for the disappearance of many species between that time and the present. Not being a person with a scientific background, I found all these things excitingly different from my usual reading fare, but the language used-apart from having to deal with such terms as homozygotic, depurination, dehiscent, and phytotelmata, which don't exactly roll off my tongue-is understandable by any educated lay reader. I found THE AMBER FOREST one of the most fascinating books of science that I have ever read and one of the best books in any field that I've read recently. If learning about the symbiosis of plants and insects, parasites and hosts, ants and fungus, in fact all the biological world of a long-gone jungle, has any appeal to you, don't miss this work.

This book tells of the author's adventures looking for amber as well as facts about it.

This text, intended for readers with some prior knowledge of condensed-matter physics, emphasizes the basic physics behind such spontaneous structural changes in crystals. Starting with the relevant thermodynamic principles, the book discusses the nature of order variables and their collective motion in a crystal lattice; in a structural phase transition a singularity in such a collective mode is responsible for the lattice instability, as revealed by soft phonons. This mechanism is analogous to the interplay of a charge-density wave and a periodically deformed lattice in low- dimensional conductors. The text also describes experimental methods for modulated crystal structures and gives examples of structural changes in representative systems. The book is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, part includes such topics as: the Landau theory of phase transitions; statistics, correlations and the mean-field approximation; pseudospins and their collective modes; soft lattice modes and pseudospin condensates; lattice imperfections and their role in the phase transitions of real crystals. The second part discusses experimental studies of modulated crystals using x-ray diffraction, neutron inelastic scattering, light scattering, dielectric measurements, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. While the presence of modulated structures in the critical region was not particularly suggested in the published.

Book Description
This book gives a comprehensive description of the physical properties of lyotropic liquid crystals. Structural features, phase transitions and phase diagrams are discussed in detail. The available experimental data on lyotropic mixtures is presented in the unifying context of the Landau theories. This phenomenological approach is used for establishing connections between structural properties and phase diagrams. The book is suitable for use as a pedagogical introduction to the subject.

Book Description
The magnetic properties of halides have been compiled in subvolume 27J. The third part, 27J3, contains data on structural and magnetic properties of halide perovskite-type layer structures of the types A2MX4 (monolayer compounds), A3M2X7 (double-layer) and A4M3X10 (triple-layer) where X=F-, Cl-, etc.; M=Mg2+, Cr2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, etc.; and A=K+, Rb+, Cs+, etc. In addition, for X=Cl- and Br- data are presented on compounds where the alkali ions are replaced by n-alkylammonium chains, and also for diammonium compounds where two alkali ions are replaced by divalent alkylene-diammonium ions. A brief sketch of the theory of phase transitions and of the relevant models (2D Ising model, 2D XY-model, 2D Ising spin glass) is also given as well as a comprehensive selection of data on critical properties near the phase transitions.

In We Are What We Ate: 24 Memories of Food, some of America's best writers recall how food has defined their existence. "In my house, curry would have been more exotic than heroin," professes editor Mark Winegardner in the introduction. "Maybe it's a family thing. Maybe it's the potassium benzoate," explains Jill McCorkle in her hilarious admission to a life of junk-food addiction. Food is at once the most common and most personal experience we all have, and in these 24 essays, the authors explore the varied experiences that accompany our sustenance. This includes Paul Auster recalling an onion tart in Provence that he believed to be his last meal, and in the shortest and most poignant essay, Gita Mehta writes of how hard it is to be hungry in the land of plenty. All of the essays were donated by the writers, and the profits from We Are What We Ate will benefit Share Our Strength, a program to alleviate and prevent hunger in the United States and around the world. Mark Winegardner has done an excellent job of assembling this diverse and entertaining collection of essays illustrating the immense variety of the American food experience. From junk food to gourmet fare, from those blessed with the heritage of taste to those of us with a white-bread tradition, We Are What We Ate offers good food and good writing for all. --Mark O. Howerton
Book Description
From Paul Auster on a Provençal onion tart to Lorrie Moore on a Chinese take-out Christmas dinner, these delectable essays by well-known american writers explore the meaning of food in our lives and our culture. With contributions by Julia Alvarez, Madison Smartt Bell, Gish Jen, Bobby Ann Mason, Richard Russo, Lee Smith, and many others.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable.......2001-06-11
This is a pleasant read. It's an ecelctic mix of essays around the subject of food. I have pulled out a few essays for my husband's kids to read, to show them how some other people in the world approach the dinner table. Long after having read it, I still think about some of the essays and I will be sure to pick it up and read it again sometime. If you like this genre of writing, you'll enjoy this little book.
A deliciously refreshing read.......1999-07-19
I thoroughly enjoyed We Are What We Ate. With few exceptions, the stories were endearing, funny, and very, very real. I loved the tribute to junk food and the touching memoir of the onion pie. A mouth-watering, heart-touching treasure, profits from this book also benefit Save Our Strength, an anti-hunger organization.
