S. Louise Underdahl takes the reader on an adventure into the world of work. It is an activity which all of us participate in. How we react to the kind of work we do varies from individuals and the workplace.

In the world of today the education of new starters is well rounded. This presents to management a new challenge that must be resolved. Workers now have a broader expectation of what a job must consist of.

The nineteenth century saw workers as tools to serve the needs of industry. This attitude came across in the literature of the time, such as the Charles Dickens novel "Hard Times". One of the characters in the book is a teacher at a London school with an autocratic outlook.

Mr. Gradrind believed his students to be like a jug. Open the top of their head and pour in the facts. Close the lid and then push them out into the world as a complete human being, ready to fulfill the needs of industry.

This attitude that people need only to work to meet the needs of industry is gradually changing. More and more employees want to have an increased ownership in the work process than ever before. Transcendent work is a system that the author believes is the solution to this demand.

To achieve a workplace that is transcendent the mix of attitude and content needs to be right. This is where the worker feels that they have input and control over the work process. Therefore they are going to have their intellectual needs satisfied, which will bring joy to their work experience.

"Soul of Work" is a well-researched exposure on the true meaning of work. The author has thrown new light onto a topic thought to be dull and mundane. Work can and should be a joyful experience.

I would recommend this book to all workers and managers seeking to achieve the most out of their workplace and themselves.

For 4 years I was stuck in a bad job and what really surprised me was that I didn't realize it, before I'd been there for 2 years. A job is your identity. The first thing people ask is `So what do you do (for a living)?' Then it's great to be able to say `I'm a.....' or `I work at...' I suppose that's why I didn't think much about why I had this job. Is it for the money? Well...yeah! Is it a job where I can develop? NO! After the first two years I started daydreaming. I wished I sat at my computer and wrote. I wished I could be at home and away from people who always expected me to be satisfied with what I did. Then I started asking myself `What do YOU want?' I knew I didn't want to be in this job no longer. I wanted to follow my dream. But it still had to take me two more years before I asked the manager to fire me.

I followed my dream and what I do today, I really love! I can't get enough of my job. I work 60 hours a week from my home and I just LOVE it! I've never felt this way about a job before. Writing is my first love (when it comes to jobs!) - being a publisher, my second. When I started on this people said `that sounds interesting...but can you live on it?' That's the point in life for many people. It doesn't matter whether you love/like your job or not - just make sure you make money. That just didn't work for me.

You spend almost half your life on your job. Make sure it's the right one, or you'll never feel happiness. This is what author S. Louise Underdahl, Ph.D., is trying to tell us in her book `The Soul of work'. Reading this book made me realize I did the right thing. If you're not happy with what you do, seek inspiration in this book. It's worth it!

I always wanted to know what Hitler tells to masses. I have big interest in his speeches, in his style of talking. It is a great book for me because it unclude the most important Adolf's public speeches. I enjoied reading it!

Volume III 1939-1940 contains: * 1939, In a breach of contractual agreements, Hitler occupies all of Czechoslovakia and establishes the protectorate Bohemia and Moravia. Lithuania cedes the Memel district. England and France repeatedly state that they will declare war on Germany in the case of a German attack on Poland or Danzig. Nevertheless, Hitler, feeling confident because of a non-aggression pact with Russia, does start war with Poland. The declaration of war by the Western powers is tantamount to the complete breakdown of foreign relations, which were based on an amiable relationship with England. The quick conquest of Poland does nothing to change the constellation in Western Europe. * 1940, Without declaring war, Hitler invades Denmark and Norway, then, one month later, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg. As a result of the campaign in the West, France capitulates; England, however, does not, contrary to Hitler's expectations. Hitler is forced to engage in air combat over Britain, a battle he loses within only a few weeks. His terrorist air-raids on London and other English cities provoke retaliation by the RAF, resulting in the destruction of major German cities from 1942 to 1945. Hitler dispatches troops to Rumania. His attempts to involve Spain, France and Russia in the battle against England fail. Italy's entry into the war proves to be a burden to Germany, with respect to Africa as well as Greece.

Max Domarus intitially published this book in Germany in the early 60's and this is the first attempt at translating this massive work. The results are a mixed bag. This set is obviously intended only for people with a serious interest in Hitler. The price alone with preclude any casual readers from investing in these volumes.

The books contain many of Hitler's speeches and these oftentimes make boring reading. Hitler was a superlative orator, but without him delivering the words, they invariably fall flat. It is scarcely edifying to read Hitler's speeches and that is what the bulk of this set is all about. However, Domarus' includes his own remarks and editing, all of which are superb. He includes little vignettes about Hitler's entourage, daily habits and private life, and his insights are both informative and accurate.

Volume 4
THE YEAR 1941

Hitler invades Yugoslavia and Greece without prior declaration of war. Like Napoleon, he subsequently attempts to defeat England in Russia and thus invades his former allies without a declaration of war. Despite considerable territorial gains, Hitler is not successful in taking Leningrad, Moscow or Murmansk. The German army takes a painful beating at Moscow. Hitler uses this opportunity to make himself commander-in-chief of the army.

THE YEAR 1942

Despite initial successes, Hitler is unable to take the Suez Canal and the oil fields in the Caucasus.

The attempt to conquer Stalingard results in the German 6th Army being surrounded. The German Africa corps is forced to retreat at El Alamein.

The efforts to exterminate the Jews reach a peak.

THE YEAR 1943

Collapse of Germany's battle in Stalingrad and Northern Africa. Italy is forced to plead for a cease-fire after Allied forces reach the mainland. Hitler occupies Northern Central Italy.

THE YEAR 1944

The invasion of the Allies in France is tantamount to the end of Hitler's rule in Western Europe. Russia smashes the German army division Mitte. An assassination attempt at Hitler's headquarters makes the internal military opposition to Hitler apparent. Romania, Bulgaria and Finland capitulate. Hitler's Christmas offensive in the Ardennes region falls apart after modest initial successes.

THE YEAR 1945

Germany is overrun by the Allied and Russian armies. Hitler is forced to take his own life in the bunker of the Reich chancellery.

A survey of black women's history.......2001-03-21

Hine Sight is a collection of Darlene Clark Hine's essays on black women's history. She is one of the most prominent historians in the field and has helped to define it, which makes the reading of this book all the more interesting. The essays printed here have already been printed numerous times in other journals and anthologies, a testimony to their (and her) importance to the field. It is a wonderful introduction to black women's history, with both theoretical and historical articles included. Because it is a collection of articles, it becomes slightly repetitious - so for an advanced student of black women's history, I would recommend a look at one of Hine's monographs.

A compilation and embellishment of about 100 selected `Daedalus' schemes, written by Jones. They first appeared in New Scientist in the mid-sixties and transferred to Nature some ten years ago. The Daedalus pieces harness accepted scientific principles in pursuit of apparently fantastic technical goals. While these flights of fancy are entertaining they have a serious purpose, raising questions in the reader's mind. An earlier collection, The Inventions of Daedalus (W H Freeman, 1982), sold 10,000 copies. Like the earlier book, this new one comprises the selected original article together with a `From Daedalus's Notebook' piece, written especially for the book, buttressing the proposal with background material, data, calculations, references, and so on, and a cartoon illustration.

Breathtaking Intellect Meets Astounding Creativity.......2002-06-23

This book features diverse tongue-in-cheek inventions, all of which were cooked up in the mind of the author. While the majority of the inventions are (and were intended to be) impracticable, each one sets the mind spinning in a deliciously enjoyable way.

Every section is only a couple of pages long, but this is not a book that one should race through. Each article contains ideas to be savoured.

If these were only off-the-cuff ideas, this book wouldn't be so impressive. What really makes the difference is that the author backs up his ideas with hard science. (People who are afraid of a few formulae in a book should probably look elsewhere.) This challenges the reader to figure out WHY a particular invention is not likely to reach the market!

I don't want to over-state the difficulty of the material -- you don't have to be a scientist. In fact, you can skip over the formulae without missing the point.

Each article features an appendix that did not appear when it was published in the original magazine. This helps us see the problems inherent in each invention. In a few cases, though, Jones's proposals have actually borne fruit! Apparently there is indeed much truth in jest.

Brainstorming at its finest.......2001-07-12

A great collection of brainstormed ideas written as jokes for a column in New Scientist, some possibly practical, some wonderfully absurd. For example, in the original "The Inventions of Daedalus" (now out of print), he independently invents stereolithography in one column; in another he tries to determine the mass of the soul.

Science doesn't get more entertaining than this.......2000-07-24

Under the pseudonym of Daedalus, David Jones has been writing for Nature and New Scientist for thirty-odd years; this is the second collection. The hundred short essays here are a hard-to-describe cross between humour and serious scientific speculation. The humour is actually in the science itself, which sounds hard to believe until you read it.

For example, Daedalus comes up with a scheme to generate electricity from the Rockies, not by hydro-electricity, which lets the descent of water generate power, but by the descent of the mountains themselves. After all, he points out, there is an enormous amount of energy locked up in all that high-altitude rock. His scheme for "geo-electric power" solves far more of the difficulties in this plan than you might think, though (in this case) not all of them. The plausibility is itself the joke--it's not so much that the scientific reader likes trying to spot the error, though that *is* fun to try to do; Daedalus just presents these outrageous ideas completely deadpan, and with a great deal of supporting evidence.

In fact, there is no flaw at all in many of his schemes. A column of his, collected in the earlier "Inventions of Daedalus", is actually cited by the inventors of buckminsterfullerene as an early paper talking about the possibilities for hollow carbon molecules, and several other articles have been either prescient or have turned out to track current research. But the book is not just for scientists and engineers--anyone with a lay interest in science will love it.

I recommend leaving it in the bathroom; each essay is a couple of pages--just right. It'll keep you entertained for months.

Imagination soaring in scientific blue skies.......2000-07-11

What a delight it is to find that David Jones has compiled another compendium of the plausible schemes of Daedalus. Anyone with the slightest interest in science will find hours of pleasure randomly dipping into this collection of Daedalus's musings culled from New Scientist, The Guardian and Nature over the last 30 years.

The breadth of David Jones's learning is astonishing - no scientific discipline is immune from the attentions of Daedalus and his team of DREADCO scientists. Reading this book constantly left me veering between wondering whether Daedalus really was revealing a glimpse of future technology and hugging myself with glee and shaking with laughter at some of the possible consequences foretold.

Jones reminds us that Daedalus is not to be mocked unthinkingly - his prediction of the existence of Buckminsterfullerene is a debt acknowledged by the Nobel laureates themselves. In this book you can read more about Daedalus's predictions of carbon nanotubes and their desirable properties.

The book follows a format where, typically, a plausible scheme is sketched out. Jones then provides us with an extract from Daedalus's notebook that gives the back-of-a-beermat calculations on which the scheme is based. He concludes with a Daedalus retrospective comment on the scheme.

Daedalus clearly has a life of his own and his schemes attract serious scientific critique - indeed, we are told how assessment of the feasibility of proposed schemes has been built into at least one university course. He is happy to point out to us when he has fallen into serious error - as, for example, he did when proposing generation of Gigawatt scale electrical energy by piezoelectric effects in the earth's crust caused by tidal distortion.

The book holds far too many surprises to mention - indeed, to do so is to spoil the reader's pleasure. My personal favorite is his prediction of the potential fire hazard lurking in the depths of the ocean below 1500 meters. It's a really great read - and one you will return to again and again.

Daedalus was a lot of fun while reading Nature, but this book just makes him even better. Not only you familiarize yourself with the devotion to weirdness (fortunately for us, with a scientific basis). Most of the things in the book make a lot of sense, and are really funny.
