Book Description
In our chaotic modern world, where technology offers the empty promise of mobility and flexibility, in reality the lines between work and home, public and private, become increasingly blurred. Maggie Jackson, the national workplace writer for the Associated Press, has noticed home playing a secondary role to work in her reporting and her personal life. A mother of two, Jackson found herself bringing work home to spend more time with her family, only to hustle them off to bed early so she could get her work done. In What's Happening to Home? Jackson explores the ever-changing role of home in our lives. "I set out to make home more than a bit of life snatched on the fly, or a dusty ideal from the past," Jackson says. "Along the way, I learned that home is more important than I ever had realized. Without a home, we're hardly human."
Jackson updates our idea of home. The very word "home" conjures images of coziness, lawn mowers and Betty Crocker. What's Happening to Home? redefines that image without short-changing the work lives so many of us value. Jackson explores ways to preserve intimacy and caring at home without returning to rigid ideals of the past.
What's Happening to Home? goes beyond debates about square footage and working moms, and helps us start thinking about larger questions of the value of home for everyone. Jackson encourages constant evaluation of how our homes influence our lives to create private sanctuaries amenable to the modern world without losing the support, warmth and love everyone needs.
Customer Reviews:
"What's Happening to Home: Balancing Work, Life and Refuge ".......2004-10-06
Maggie Jackson has written an original and thought-provoking book brimming with insightful observations. In her extensive research she has both hunted down the extremes of combining work and home and acknowledged her own personal, more typical, odyssey. This is a book to pick up when your spouse is complaining about your Blackberry usage at 11 pm on Saturday night, and when your kids make those heart-rending comments about missing you when you're traveling. It helps put our crazy lives into perspective and provides ideas on what we can do to prevent work creep. Jackson seems a natural for this topic, having studied and written about this subject for many years. With a dearth of good books addressing work/family issues, this book is a winner.
There's No Place Like Home!.......2004-10-04
With the blurring of boundaries between home and the workplace, our lives have become increasingly stressful and disconnected. In an intelligent, refreshing change of pace from the simplistic how-to, Maggie Jackson guides us to re-evaluate the concept of home and come up with our own personal appreciation. In What's Happening to Home? The reader is given an historical overview, witty pop-culture observations along with easy-to-implement suggestions for moving forward as liberated women who enjoy creating a warm, nurturing environment. Instead of getting back to basics, move forward to the basics - with Maggie!
Self-indulgent but provocative.......2003-06-20
There's less here than meets the eye. Award-winning work-life journalist Maggie Jackson interviews numerous people about tensions between work and home, but we learn only that people are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, and that the trend is likely to continue. It's an entertaining read, but what's missing? Social context, for one: the ideal of a private home life valorized by Jackson is essentially the possession of the post-1850 suburban middle class. Rural and working-class families successfully combine home and work with fewer stumbles over the molehills that her painfully self-aware cell phone-toting interview subjects turn into mountains. What else is missing? Social context again: Jackson's nostalgia for housework (she doesn't so her own, she admits) ignores the history of housework as a means of limiting women's aspirations (well documented in numerous books), as well as research that indicates homemaking is a full-time job that few husbands fully share. The spiritually cherishing "home" for which Jackson's overstressed subjects yearn is most probably a social construct that matched the lived experience of few, if any, Americans. Teasing out the shape of the unattainable domestic ideal may be the most entertaining part of reading the book.
Fresh and thought-provoking.......2002-05-28
I really loved this book! It spoke to me at a deep level but had an ease about it that made it pure pleasure to read.
There is no book like it - it considers a totally fresh subject. The author shines very thoughtful light on the `essence' of home, considering the nuances of what has changed about it and what is vital to keep. She takes us on a journey - her own -- and we discover with her how important it is that we preserve the home - although a redefined version of it -- `as a place of anchor and refuge from the public and from work'. There is a clarity that comes from reading this book and a reassurance from the understanding it offers.
I found myself changing my own behavior in the midst of reading it and feeling a sense of relief somehow. I suspect that my life will remain enriched by what I took away from it.
The book will have wide appeal both by its style and its substance. It is a great book for individuals who are deliberate about the quality of their own lives, for social observers and for people just plain curious about the invisible forces that carry us along.
A fascinating, informative, highly recommended account.......2002-04-10
What's Happening To Home? Balancing Work, Life, And Refuge In The Information Age by veteran journalist Maggie Jackson is an effective, "reader friendly" guide for the twenty-first century, focusing as it does on the invasion of telecommunication, e-mail, and the onward march of information technology to deliver more work to one's home doorstep - as well as the increasing American trend to take just about everything short of the actual office home after the official workday has ended. What's Happening To Home? addresses very real contemporary concerns, concentrating on practical and effective guidelines to balance work and home life for a happier and healthier future. What's Happening To Home? is a fascinating, informative, highly recommended account that speaks to everyone caught up in the manifold pressures of the digital age.

Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2002-03-16
Dean LeBaron has crafted an insightful volume that is part travelogue, part cultural analysis, and part memoir. The resulting book will bring you up-close and personal with the forces that shaped the two great cultures of Russia and China. The text is adorned with vignettes, anecdotes, parables and humor that keep the read as entertaining as it is weighty. We from getAbstract strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand two countries that have greatly influenced the last century of human history and will play a central role in the next.
a front-row seat on history.......2002-01-26
This first-hand account of some of the most momentous events of the twentieth century is an extremely compelling read. The account is lucid and engaging, but it's the analysis that takes it over the top. It was a pleasure to read.
Wow! A business adventurer!.......2002-01-26
I'm a graduate student, earning my MBA at Stanford, and I just have one point to make: Dean LeBaron deserves all of our attention and respect. Here's a man who risked his (considerable) reputation to help transform the economies of Russia and China. And unlike the most folks these days (dare I mention Enron), he wasn't in it just for the money. LeBaron is a thoughtful, insightful, highly original analyst. Read this book and you will discover, as he writes, that "nothing is as contrary as reality." I can't wait for his next book.
LeBaron is the business John Grisham!.......2002-01-24
This book is a true financial thriller. And it is as insightful as it is exciting. Highly recommended to all!
Bravo!.......2002-01-21
An amazing tale. If you read no other book about the transformation of Russia and China to free-market economies, make it this one. Mao, Marx, and the Market is a true-to-life account that will entrall you from beginning to end. It is like no other published on the subject. Read it to gain an entirely fresh perspective on capitalist earthquakes that shook -- and continue to shake -- these two great nations.

Physical Security.......2007-07-13
This proved to be a concise, easy to read synopsis of most aspects of physical security.
Effective Physical Security.......2007-03-08
This is a great book! For those in Facilities security, physical security or responsible for the security of a community, this is a must read. Insightful! Helps you ask the right questions and points you to positive solutions.
Excellent introduction for security new comers........2005-09-13
The chapter on Crime Prevention by Environmental Design was worth the price of the book. Technical coverage of various physical design features (CCTV, alarms, lighting, etc) were sufficient. The book is an excellent reference for security new comers. I personally would like to see more specific treatment on various security scenarios such as warehouse, commercial buildings, etc. In general, I consider this a good buy.
Good introduction and reference to the subject.......2001-03-27
I'm not an expert in physical security--I like to think of myself in an expert in information security. An understanding of physical security topics is essential for an Infosec consultant, but consultants and CISSP test candidates looking for information on this subject don't really know where to turn.
This book was suggested to me by another CISSP and I found it useful. The book, which is really a set of essays by multiple authors, including Fennelly, is split into three sections: Design, Equipment, and Operations. It includes lengthy discussions of building construction, lighting and fencing, and far more about locks than I ever wanted to know. Many checklists on several different subject areas are included, although not all of the checklist items are necessarily explained somewhere in the book. Several very detailed glossaries are included, although they are unfortunately not listed in the table of contents or index.
The chapter "Electronic Access Control and System Integration" is good, but is lifted right out of another book I recommend, "The Book on Access Control," by Konicek and Little. The chapter "Physical Access Control for Computer Areas," taken from John M. Carroll's computer security text is excellent. I highly recommend the chapter "Approaches to Physical Security" by Gigliotti and Jason. Infosec professionals will feel at home with the discussion of threat analysis, planning, cost justification, and layering. Besides being a useful essay on physical security, there is a lot of value to the Infosec professional in learning how related disciplines approach similar problems.
Chapter 2, the author's 11-page essay on conducting security surveys, is not only a useful guide to that subject, but it also contains wise advice that should be helpful for a professional in any discipline: "Only when you have developed the ability to visualize the potential for criminal activity will you become an effective crime scene surveyor." Overall, the book seems pretty solid, so I'm putting it on my must-buy list for security practitioners.

Book Description
We humans cannot see when light is polarized and this leads to unfortunate misapprehensions about this aspect of nature. Even scientists who should know better often assume that it is an obscure topic of specialized interest in only a few rather isolated areas. In fact, it is a universal feature of our world and most natural light is at least partially polarized. In the animal kingdom, insects and other animals exploit such natural polarization in some fascinating ways since they do not share this human deficiency and can both detect and analyze polarization. It may be our unfamiliarity with this aspect of light that also makes people think it is a difficult subject, yet the basis is extremely simple. When these misconceptions are overcome, the phenomena associated with polarization are found to be important throughout science and technology, from physics, astronomy, natural history, geology, chemistry, and several branches of engineering to crafts such as glass-blowing and jewelry. Polarized light also involves some very beautiful effects, most of which are easy to demonstrate. Enriching our perception of the world, this book addresses these misconceptions and provides a framework for applications. It covers wave alignment and crystals as well as various phenomena such as scattering and reflection.
