Ronna Lichtenberg saw the way office politics worked while she was a senior vice president at Prudential Securities. Now a marketing and strategy consultant, she's written Work Would Be Great if It Weren't for the People, a clever and unambiguous guide to successfully negotiating what she calls "the human element of the workplace." In a case-by-case narrative that's supplemented with wry commentary from her "evil twin"--which consists of brutally honest observations that allow her to play devil's advocate--Lichtenberg unveils a series of suggestions for dealing with common corporate situations that can regularly boost or torpedo a career. She addresses scenarios such as managing a change in jobs or responsibilities, handling unjust demands for commitment or allegiance, and working effectively with friends, enemies, and even lovers. As all of the most salient points are boldfaced for emphasis, this already fast read can be absorbed even more quickly. --Howard Rothman
Product Description
Reveals everything there is to know about maneuvering the unspoken rules of the workplace, including: what to do when you want to go over your boss's head; how close to the vest to hold your cards when you're the new kid on the block; why it's not a good idea to align yourself too closely with a single mentor; how to defend yourself against malicious gossip; & what to do when you absolutely, positively, can't stand the person in the office next to you. Whether you work alone, at a small office, in a big corp., or on a farm, this is an insightful, practical guide to making office politics work for you, rather than against you.

BUY THIS FOR SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT!.......2003-02-07
I have been working since I was 17, now 42, and wish someone had sat me down with this advice long ago- this is especially valuable when it relates to personal or off-work behavior which can count for or against your career. If you are just starting out- read her experiences, people who don't follow these unwritten rules are gone one Monday, never to be heard from again. I have loaned this to all the wide eyed, intelligent promising young talent we hire (and want to retain) and they have thanked me- then bought their own copy. So much more helpful then the Ken Blanchard-one-minute-manager-moved-my-cheese-unusable-GARBAGE out there! BUY this book or borrow one from the library!
How to Get Ahead - by Stepping on People.......2002-08-20
I've read my fair share of management books - and this is the first one I've literally thrown away so no one would be tempted to borrow it. It gives a cynical, spiteful, and even cruel perspective on ways to advance your career. The only example this provides for career advancement is a bad one. Perhaps she might still be (successfully) employed at Prudential if she treated people like human beings. OK, I'll admit that not all coworkers always fit into that category, but it sure makes for a better overall work environment.
Shred this one and purchase _Jesus, CEO_ and Blanchard's books (One Minute Manager) instead. You'll sleep better at night.
Humorous, but potentially dangerous..........2001-10-24
This book is much more humor or biography than business reference. I was looking for something, not to teach me how to play the normal game of office politics but to play it in a different way or combat it with dignity, self-respect and a respectable work role in tact. If you have a cold heart and no concern for others, or are just seeking some humor then by all means, take a look at Lichtenburg's book. But tactics described in this book are very sleazy and will be a gamble to put into practice for the caring and professional person. They worked for her, but she's lucky. And I bet she has trouble looking herself in the mirror. Then again, maybe she doesn't, but I would.
Not worth the money.......1999-05-31
I recently was a woman promoted to a fairly high position in my corporation. I purchased this book thinking it would give me helpful tips to surviving up at the top. It turned out that it was full of "catty" comments and really should be viewed as nothing more than entertainment; not as a useful business tool.
An absolutely practical guide to office politics.......1999-03-29
This book is a perfect "how-to" guide to coach you how to protect yourself, how to preserve your integrity, and how to clear the obstacles in the office to perform at your best. This should be required reading for anyone in a tough and competitive office environment.

Stay On Top of Every Major Issue in the Structured Finance Market and Learn Powerful New Models for Identifying, Measuring, Pricing, and Monitoring Your Deals
The Handbook of Structured Finance is a complete guide to the major issues facing investors in the structured finance market. Comprehensive and accessible, it provides the latest techniques for measuring and managing risk, finding optimum pricing, and taking advantage of leverage and market incompleteness, as well as models for debt and equity modeling.
Book Description
The Structured Credit Handbook is a comprehensive introduction to all types of credit-linked financial instruments. This book provides state-of-the-art primers on single tranche collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), credit derivatives (such as credit default swaps and swaptions), and iBoxx indexes. Filled with in-depth insight and expert advice, The Structured Credit Handbook covers all aspects of the synthetic arbitrage CDO market, including new instruments such as CDO2. Readers will also gain a firm understanding of the investment rationale, risks, and rewards associated with CDO investments through this valuable resource.
The exploding use of credit derivatives and collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) has transformed the world of credit, creating an $18 trillion market almost overnight and resulting in innumerable investment and career opportunities globally. The Structured Credit Handbook provides the reader with a comprehensive and clear roadmap to today's new credit landscape. The full spectrum of structured credit products, from single-name CDS to CDOs, is explained in a simple, clear fashion that is free from the financial jargon and mathematical complexity which characterize many other derivative texts. The handbook begins with an in-depth explanation of the building blocks of the structured credit markets, single-name default swaps and indexes, and it culminates with complex products such as credit options, synthetic tranches, CDOs based on bank loans and asset-backed securities, and CDO-squareds.
Written by experienced practitioners who have participated in this market since its infancy, each of the thirteen chapters introduces and analyzes a new product and explains its practical applications. A rich set of real-life case studies illustrate the application of each product in a concrete market setting. The book may be used in a semester-long course on structured credit as part of a business or finance curriculum. Whether you are a market professional, a university student or faculty member, or simply a financially savvy layperson, look no further for an up-to-date and thorough introduction to this rapidly growing and exciting field.
Dr. Arvind Rajan, Managing Director, Citigroup Global Markets, is engaged in proprietary trading of Structured Credit products, and until recently, was global head of Structured Credit Research and Strategy at Citigroup. Glen McDermott (New York, NY) is Director of Fixed Income Sales and the former head of CDO Research at Citigroup Global Markets Inc. Ratul Roy is head of CDO Strategy for Citigroup Global Markets and has spent the prior nine years in structuring or analyzing CDOs and other structured credit products.
Customer Reviews:
A very helpful handbook for those interested in this rather specialized topic.......2007-03-13
You may have heard of swaps, swaptions, collateralized debt obligations, and a myriad other credit structures. For most folks, even when they hear the terms, they have no idea what these contracts are and wouldn't know where to turn to get a reliable and understandable explanation. This book is a good place to start for those interested in these kinds of obligations.
It may well be that your company wants you to look at laying off default risk on some large contracts, or that you want to add or take away some risk from your investment portfolio to insure against loss or to add the possibility of greater return. For these kinds of activities (and many others), this book is a great place to begin learning about what these things are, how they work, and how they are used.
Each of the thirteen chapters takes on a different type of product, explains what it is, its characteristics, some of the variations of the contract, and usually a case study showing the practical application of the product. Each chapter has a different mix of authors who are specialists in that particular product, so the information is solid. They are all written clearly, which is an achievement for what is often considered an arcane subject.
The chapters are: PART ONE - INDEX and SINGLE NAME PRODUCTS: An Introduction offering A Roadmap of the New World of Structured Credit, A Primer on Credit Default Swaps, Credit Default Swaptions, Constant Maturity Credit Default Swaps, Credit Derivatives Indexes, and The Added Dimensions of Credit - A Guide to Relative Value Trading.
PART TWO: PORTFOLIO CREDIT DERIVATIVES: Single Tranche CDOs (CDO= Collateralized Debt Obligation), Trading Credit Tranches - Taking Default Correlation out of the Black Box, and Understanding CDO-Squareds, CPPI - Leveraging and Deleveraging Credit.
PART THREE: COLLATERALIZED DEBT OBLIGATIONS: Collateralized Loan Obligations, ABS CDOs, CDO Equity, and Commercial Real Estate CDOs.
The authors all work for Citigroup, so it is likely that their terminology and view has some bias towards the way their company does things, but it is still a step further than the generalized and brief discussions on the topic I had in my MBA program. This book could be used as a text in such a course or additional reading for the interested student or general reader who has a fascination for this specialized subject.
There are also chapter endnotes, a glossary, and index. Each chapter makes good use of charts, graphs, and tables that aid understanding but do not get in the way.

Book Description
The world seems ever smaller and ever quicker: environmental, public health, industrial and cultural processes operate ever more on a global, rather than a local scale. Does this process, sometimes known as globalisation, draw us closer together, or drive us further apart, from a moral point of view? In recent years, bioethics has addressed many of the issues that arise in the context of globalisation: solidarity, conflict, and autonomy; human rights, liberty and toleration; the political and economic context of health care and inequalities in health; environmental and public health change. At the same time, bioethics has often been merely an agent of obscure political forces, and has been challenged for its emphasis on autonomy over considerations of justice. This study brings together scientists from the fields of medicine, law, and philosophy. The texts are the results of a conference the Europäische Akademie held in 2003. The group developed its thesis in open discussions of foundational and applied problems of bioethics from an interdisciplinary and international perspective.
Book Description
The importance of the social and material production of urban nature has recently emerged as an area of importance with academic realms. In the Nature of Cities provides an integrated and relational approach that helps to untangle the interconnected economic, political and social processes that go together to form urban landscapes. This volume draws together prominent urban scholars to critically examine how economic, political, cultural processes affect urban environments. Contributions incorporate both new theoretical discussions about the social production while also supporting ideas with empirical research from the US, UK, Europe, Central and South America. The groundbreaking collection will continue to progress knowledge within the realm of human/environment relations, but explicitly with regard to urban areas.

The Short Stories of Henry Jame: Worth the Effort.......2006-08-15
The short stories of Henry James are a microcosm of his novels: bafflingly complex, syntactically convoluted, and thematically multi-layered. He wrote more than 100 between 1864 and 1910, of which perhaps a few dozen are much read today. Complicating any discussion of his short prose is to define "short." Many of his short stories are long enough to qualify as novellas but regardless of the length, any fiction of Henry James promises to take the reader into the world of the microverse, a highly stylized and internalized arena where action counts less than thought and "how" far more than "what." For those who come to his short fiction after having read, say THE GOLDEN BOWL or THE AMBASSADORS, such readers have learned patience, secure in the knowledge that the inner workings of the mind are surely more interesting than the slam-bang world of reality.
There are a few themes that James uses often both in his short and long fiction. He likes to place cultured and intelligent protagonists in an alien environment just to watch them squirm on a foreign alter, or what is more sinister, to maintain them in a familiar ground, only to change the laws of physics or rationality--and then watch them squirm. He employs the doppelganger, or double of the protagonist, one who might be his present or future version, or again more sinister, one who might be a spectral reincarnation. Many of James' heroes fear marriage and must battle an encrusted society that demands it. James was also fascinated with innocence, especially in children and child-like adults. In such stories, the world exists only to corrupt such innocence. Finally, James rarely used one theme in isolation. He much preferred to onion his stories with overlapping themes, all of which are centered on James' rich and allusive prose style, allowing him to meld the complexity of content with the complexity of style. I have chosen a few of his short prose fiction as examples of the quintessential Henry James.
In "The Aspern Papers," James writes of a narrator who must balance the need to obtain art (the papers of the deceased American poet Aspern) while maintaining his ethics while so doing. The narrator travels to Venice for these papers only to discover that their current owners are quite unwilling to give them up. He promises to marry one of them in return for their delivery to him, thinking all the while they are too naïve to see through his scheme. In the end, he tries to steal them, only to learn that they have burned them, one page at a time. James' narrator is one of a long series of such who speak of integrity more than show it.
In "The Jolly Corner," James uses the "double" of the protagonist to point out how one man's life could have been had things been different. Spencer Brydon, an American expatriate returns to America, only to meet his ghostly alter ego, one who Brydon might have become had he stayed at home. Perhaps James had in mind Lambert Strether of THE AMBASSADORS, who is also the model of what the alter ego might have been: a money-grubbing capitalist with no one to tell him "Live!"
James uses "The Pupil" to depict the loss of childhood innocence. The caddish and grifting transplanted American Moreen family hires fellow American Pemberton to tutor their son. They refuse to pay him agreed on wages, all the while exhorting him with the nobility of his task. They offer him custody of their son, which he understandably refuses, but the boy is crushed since he favors Pemberton over his parents.
Art versus life come into conflict in "The Real Thing." The narrator is hired by a couple, punningly named the Monarchs, to paint them as exemplars of the "real thing" of nobility. It is his realization that the reality of their claim does not allow him to create the illusion of a second-rate knock off. He is unwilling to further society's need to measure a life by glorifying its phony aspect.
In these stories and in Henry James' others, he presents the reader with a subjective examination of the inner workings of the mind. For those readers who wish to enter such a microverse, they will find that James' admittedly baffling style will be seen as more as a part of that journey than an impediment.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Deal, for James lovers and newbies.......2000-05-29
This is a tremendous book - some of the greatest stories ever written, attractively packaged and reasonably priced. These are not really "short stories", as most of them are longer than 50 pages, and they all require careful attention, but the effort is well worth it. While some are better than others, there is not a weak story in the book.
