Book Description

Most people become disillusioned with work at some point in their lives. Organizational politics get in the way of real achievement. Stress interferes with enjoying the rest of our lives. And sometimes we get the nagging feeling that we screwed up when choosing a career and now we're stuck with something we don't really want. While it's easy to blame the company, the boss, our parents or our teachers for our predicament, blame is a dead-end street. The only way to fix the problem is to fix ourselves first. Working Choices helps you look at your career from an entirely new perspective. You'll take an honest look at organizational life, from the positives of shared experience and community to the negatives of status games and truth avoidance. You'll also move beyond the old question, "what do I want to be when I grow up?" through a series of exercises designed to help you choose work that enriches your entire life. Whether you're just starting out in your career or find yourself wondering, "Is That All There Is," Working Choices gives you the tools you need to make a difference in your work and improve the quality of your working life.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent Humorous and Realistic View.......2000-12-12

I have always hated reading books like this, they were always 'snoozers' But this one, as the title states Working Choices, promises to provide a 'new perspective' on work and career and does it ever! The author gives a very humorous, intelligent, realistic and often a moving view of the American workplace that everyone working today has experienced. Working Choices is a fast reading book and holds your interest at all times. A highly motivating piece of work. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works, or is preparing to enter the work force. And I would love to see more books by this author on any subject.

    Book Description

Corporate Risk Management analyses, compares and contrasts tools and techniques used in risk management at corporate, strategic business and project level and develops a risk management mechanism for the sequencing of risk assessment through corporate, strategic and project stages of an investment in order to meet the requirements of the 1999 Turnbull report.

By classifying and categorising risk within these levels, readers will learn how to drill down and roll-up to any level of the organisational structure, establish the risks that each project is most sensitive to, and implement the appropriate risk response strategy - to the benefit of all stakeholders.

This second edition of the successful Handbook of Adhesion provides concise and authoritative articles covering many aspects of the science and technology associated with adhesion and adhesives. It is intended to fill a gap between the necessarily simplified treatment of the student textbook and the full and thorough treatment of the research monograph and review article. The articles are structured in such a way, with internal cross-referencing and external literature references, that the reader can build up a broader and deeper understanding, as their needs require. This second edition includes many new articles covering developments which have risen in prominence in the intervening years, such as scanning probe techniques, the surface forces apparatus and the relation between adhesion and fractal surfaces. Advances in understanding polymer - polymer interdiffusion are reflected in articles drawing out the implications for adhesive bonding. In addition, articles derived from the earlier edition have been revised and updated where needed. Throughout the book there is a renewed emphasis on environmental implications of the use of adhesives and sealants. The scope of the Handbook, which features nearly 250 articles from over 60 authors, includes the background science - physics, chemistry and material science - and engineering, and also aspects of adhesion relevant to the use of adhesives, including topics such as: Sealants and mastics Paints and coatings Printing and composite materials Welding and autohesion Engineering design The Handbook of Adhesion is intended for scientists and engineers in both academia and industry, requiring an understanding of the various facets of adhesion.

    Book Description

"A very readable book containing the best arguments thus far opposing campaign finance reform."
    — Choice

"Martin Redish's accomplishment is that he not only has written a strong critique of te proposals to extend governmental regulation of free speech, but he has also given First Amendment defenders a base from which to attack existing restrictions on communication. Money Talks illustrates and upholds why the Founders prohibited Congress from making any law thta abridges the freedom of speech."—Regulation

Many have argued that soft money and special interests are destroying the American electoral system. And yet the clarion call for campaign finance reform only touches on the more general belief that money and economic power have a disastrous impact on both free expression and American democracy. The nation's primary sources of communication, the argument goes, are increasingly controlled by vast corporate empires whose primary, or even exclusive motive is the maximization of profit. And these conglomerates should simply not be granted the same constitutional protection as, say, an individual protester.

And yet neither the expenditure of money for expressive purposes nor an underlying motive of profit maximization detracts from the values fostered by such activity, claims Martin H. Redish. In fact, given the modern economic realities that dictate that effective expression virtually requires the expenditure of capital, any restriction of such capital for expressive purposes will necessarily reduce the sum total of available expression. Further, Redish here illustrates, the underlying motive of those who wish to restrict corporate expression is disagreement with the nature of the views they express.

Confronting head-on one of the sacred cows of American reformist politics, Martin H. Redish here once again lives up to his reputation as one of America's most original and counterintuitive legal minds.

    3 out of 5 stars A Very Depressing Book.......2002-07-24

I guess I can claim to know Marty Redish. He was one of my law school professors a quarter century ago; I did some clerking for him. Bright, personable and a prolific writer, he has worked his way into a fair amount of fame or notoriety, especially as a First Amendment scholar.

Prof. Redish advances the view that the ability to spend as much as you want in support of a political candidate is your constitutionally protected, First Amendment right. Whether you are a natural person or a corporation, he argues, you should be allowed to contribute as much as you want to any candidate, for any cause, for any reason. And, he reasons, any limits on that ability violate the First Amendment.

Let's pause and note that even the Rehnquist court has not gone this far. And let's reflect on how we acquired out present president - a ton of Republican money and his daddy's name. I first saw this happen in Alaska, where I happen to live, when Mike Gravel defeated Ernest Gruening by the simple expedient of purchasing saturation advertising in the last four weeks of the campaign. Gruening, a true statesman, was defeated by a man whose apparent goal as U.S. Senator was to amass enough wealth to assure himself re-election in the next campaign. I'd argue that the triumph of the Gravels over the Gruenings has bought us the government we have today.

To argue that the process cannot be controlled, it seems to me, is to argue that our government pretty much belongs to the highest bidder. Prof. Redish, without ever squarely addressing it, argues either there is no link between campaign contributions and influence, or that the influence is perfectly acceptable. I don't believe that our Founding Fathers would agree with either alternative.

Prof. Redish makes a forceful argument, and I can only hope he is wrong. This book will have influence - I'm sure it was written for the purpose - with the Rehnquist court and its successors. Which is too bad. Whatever your views, if you care about our government or the future of the country, you should read this book.

      Book Description

With the conclusion of the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture in 1994, agriculture has for the first time been integrated into world trade rules and disciplines. WTO Members have made a commitment to continue the reform process initiated during the Uruguay Round by starting new WTO negotiations on agriculture by 2000. This book combines academic analysis with practical expertise to discuss, in an accessible and systematic way, some of the principal aspects of these agricultural negotiations, and aims to make recommendations for viable and successful negotiating positions in the new WTO talks on agricultural trade.

Several expert articles outline the historical and political background of previous negotiations and policy developments in agricultural trade. Others provide an overview of the key issues for the new round of negotiations, including: the Common Agricultural Policy reform in view of the Millennium Round objectives and future enlargement of the European Union; the prospects for negotiations in the areas of market access and export subsidies; and aspects of primary importance for the future of international agricultural trade such as food safety and quality standards, environmental and animal welfare considerations, and issues under dispute in the WTO. The positions of leading actors in the new round of negotiations, including major countries (Japan and the United States), groups of countries (the European Union, the Cairns Group and net food-importing countries) and European farmers are also presented.

This is a timely and topical work which will be of great interest to negotiators, policymakers, advisers, researchers and academics working in international trade, and in particular the area of trade and agriculture.

          Book Description

The first half deals with the motion of a single particle under the influence of electronic and magnetic fields. The basic language of linear and circular accelerators is developed. The principle of phase stability is introduced along with phase oscillations in linear accelerators and synchrotrons. Presents a treatment of betatron oscillations followed by an excursion into nonlinear dynamics and its application to accelerators. The second half discusses intensity dependent effects, particularly space charge and coherent instabilities. Includes tables of parameters for a selection of accelerators which are used in the numerous problems provided at the end of each chapter.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction.......2000-05-18

This book is a superb introduction to the field of acclereator physics. Starting with a basic knowledge of relativity and E&M is all that is necessary. Edwards and Syphers do a great job of "building" an accelerator in their book and using operating parameters of real world accelerators (mostly the Tevatron) for their numerical examples.

My only complaint is that some of the problems could be worded more clearly and concisely

          Book Description

There are more than ten thousand particle accelerators in the world from the linear accelerators used for cancer therapy in modern hospitals to the giant 'atom-smashers' at international particle physics laboratories used to unlock the secrets of creation. Many scientists and engineers spend their lives designing, constructing, and operating these machines - yet few universities include the subject of particle accelerators in their curricula. The few courses that do exist and the summer schools run by the big accelerator laboratories lack a simple introduction which covers the essentials of the subject for the many who need to learn how these machines work. This book fills that gap and takes the reader through each of the aspects of a modern accelerator giving enough information to unlock the door to the subject but does not overload the understanding with mathematics. Anyone with a general interest in modern technology based on a fascinating variety of physics and engineering will find much of interest in this book.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars European efforts predominating.......2004-06-06

Very specialised book. Written mostly for engineers involved in designing accelerators, and graduate students in physics who might have experiments at an accelerator.

No abstruse theory here. A book for experimentalists. Wilson describes clearly the differences between cyclotrons and linear accelerators and synchrotrons. The advantages and disadvantages of each. With real life examples, like those at CERN (of course), and at SLAC and Fermilab.

It does seem that the baton is passing from the US in this field. The European scientists have somehow managed to keep their funding together, which Wilson praises. He undoubtedly help bring this about. Certainly, an impression from this book is that if you are starting out in experimental particle physics, you might do best to direct your efforts at CERN.

The complex technology of particle accelerators is based upon a series of often rather simple physical concepts. This comprehensive introduction to the subject focuses on providing a deep physical understanding of these key ideas. The book surveys the many aspects of accelerator physics and not only explains how accelerators work, but also why the underlying physics leads to a particular choice of design or technique, and points out the limitations of the technology. The clear and thorough mathematical treatment always emphasizes the physical principles described by the equations, and includes a range of calculations which develop a genuine feeling for the quantities and concepts involved.

                  Book Description

In "The Fisherman's Quilt," young Nora Hunter arrives in Kodiak Alaska with her fisherman husband and new baby. She brings her first, fancy quilt to Alaska, along with an idealistic vision of life on America's last frontier.

Nora struggles with the loneliness, danger, ambition, and mistrust inherent in her life, by making quilts celebrating weddings and births, new homes and fresh starts, and finally, her own strength.

Nora Hunter knows what it is to desire something passionately that the world seems to conspire to prevent her from obtaining. She is fortunate enough to realize that she has the strength and the imagination to adapt. In the face of abandonment and rejection, she finds something to offer her children and her community.

"The Fisherman's Quilt" poignantly describes the longing, questioning, and celebration of this modern-day Everywoman. At once an epic, love story, adventure, and a portrait of late twentieth century America marriage, "The Fisherman's Quilt" shows that Nora's adventure has been in her discovery that courage has an everyday currency.

2 out of 5 stars Is That It?.......2007-04-10

After reading other reviews, I thought I would take this with to read on a recent trip to Kodiak. I remembered positive remarks, and a review mentioning that it kept getting better, so even though it was choppy reading and didn't hold my interest, I continued reading. I kept waiting for something to happen, and it really didn't. Too true to life, I guess, it was just like reading a somewhat depressed person's diary and hoping things will get better, but it just ending typically. Not really a great escape or source of hope or inspiration. The worst was that it enticed me with talk of quilts and quilting, but it really had hardly any of that at all. How can you title a book, "The Fisherman's Quilt" and then not have quilting as a theme? If you try hard enough you can see how Nora metaphorically thought of herself as her husband's quilt, and that idea could be taken further, but the actual physical quilt and process of quilting did not play a big enough part of the story to tie the idea to the story.

                  5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-07-17

I picked up this book at a local folklife festival. I don't normally enjoy novels and had some doubts about this one. But I was looking for a good read and books are a weakness for me! I was not disappointed in the least! This was a great read that just got better and better! I have passed the book on to a friend who spent the first years of her married life in Alaska with her husband. Both were trying to make some money. She said it is so amazingly depicting of their own life up there. I found myself absorbed in trying to decide whether the marriage of Matt and Nora would make it or not. And whether it truly should. I wonder if Nora's husband ever woke up to what he lost! For his sake, I hope so! I absolutely did not find that the people in Kodiak were depicted in a negative light. I highly recommend this book! It reads like a memoir. Who can go wrong in writing their own thoughts and feelings and experiences. I hope this book has a sequel. I'd like to know the rest of the story!

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-05-24

The Fisherman's Quilt was a great read. I have a long-standing interest in Alaska and I thought the story gave me an enjoyable and very believable glimpse of what it would be like to live in a small Alaskan fishing town - the adventure and beauty but also the isolation and loneliness. In the book, I felt I met a real person, Nora, a romantic who gradually comes to terms with the hard realities of adult life as she struggles to raise a family in Alaska. I do not generally read novels but the book rang so true it was like reading non-fiction.

5 out of 5 stars The ring of truth.......2006-03-29

A wonderful story. I enjoyed Nora's pluck, her marvelous internal monologues that had such immediacy about them; her crazy friends, her busy and boisterous little children. Having travelled and lived in remote places, I identified with Nora's sense of isolation; desperation, and "war-time" humor. Margaret Doyle's words have the ring of truth. I loved this book.

                  1 out of 5 stars Poor Representation.......2006-02-28

I believe Ms Doyle made a poor representation of the people of Kodiak, as I had lived there myself for many years and coincidentally, during the very time she writes of. It was a pretty thin veil of so many wonderful people that I know well. Kodiak's people are perhaps a different breed of individual to some but, they are honest, friendly, hard working and helpful. One doesn't make enemies very easily there but I can see that Ms Doyle perhaps left a "bad taste" to many. Her bitterness at the sacrifice that the many "real" women make daily was apparently one she couldn't cut. And, why use Quilt Shops to sell your book? It is so misleading!
