A Business Book.......2006-03-28

I had to read this book (required reading) in the Business Management class I'm taking. I absolutely had no idea why. I thought our Prof was insane.

After I read it, though, I was like, "Wow!" This is the best business book ever, and at the same time part sci-fi, part philosophy, and part just hysterical comedy.

Read this book. It will change the way you look at things!

Those looking to find political allusions in B.Leve's tome will be taken into the nearest public square and flogged (with a wet noodle).

There I go again! Seriously, this book evidences the genius of a writer who understands the wisdom of the ages, who has experienced the Arab-Israeli conflict up close, and wishes to impart enduring lessons on the burgeoning cybercommerce class. (I made up the word "cybercommerce." Do I get my free toy surprise?)

What are those lessons? That the secular and religious worlds need not, in the minds of cybercommerce mandarins, be partitioned like desks in a drawer. Rather, the idea of feeling "good" in the secular world can and must be consistent with the classical theological ideal of good works.

B.Leve, to his immense credit, avoids a major pitfall. He does not impart the Calvinistic notion that our worthiness to God is based on our personal industry (Ebeneezer Scrooge, please call Marley). In addition, his aforementioned experience with the Arab-Israeli conflict allows him to use the Islamic confusion with the secular-religious balance as a basis from which to explain how harmony between the two can actually be achieved.

I heartily endorse this book, and urge you to read it. You'll believe.

This book came along just in time. I want to congratulate Jancie Gow Pettey for tackling this subject and for doing it in a way that is readable and helpful. This book came to my attention just as I was accepting a new job with a nonprofit institution that serves an extremely diverse (both ethnically and economically) community. One phrase stood out to me: "Diversity means adjustment."

Fundraising in a Multicultural World.......2002-01-11

In this latest publication in the AFP/Wiley Fund Development Series, author Janice Gow Pettey contends that, to be successful, fundraisers must understand diverse ethnic cultures in America. While philanthropy in America mirrors the rapid shifts in technology and culture of the 21st century, giving practices in many ethnic communities draw on ancient cultural and religious traditions. Pettey looks at four major ethnic groups, African American, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American, explores their charitable traditions, then applies this background to recommended fundraising techniques.

The book provides interesting historical perspectives on these four groups, and offers insights into specialized giving practices. Cultural pitfalls are addressed as well: how do you bring up planned giving in a Chinese community, where death may be a taboo subject? How do you measure philanthropy where much of the flow of funds is back to communities in immigrants' home lands?

Also included are demographic data from the 2000 census, as well as observations gleaned from interviews with professionals in the philanthropic sector on family, personal and cultural giving patterns within their respective cultures. (This survey is ongoing, and the author gives information in the book on how to participate.)

"Cultivating Diversity in Fundraising" is well-organized and clearly written. While giving nonprofit professionals the tools to succeed in successful fundraising among these major ethnic groups, the book also promotes a greater understanding and respect for the role of minority communities in American philanthropic life.

This text is extremely clear and direct. It offers a simple and expedient introduction to advanced topics with little prerequisites. Anyone with rudimentary knowledge of classical and quauntum mechanics can follow the author's presentation with great easy. The organization of the text is completely appropriate and the exercises are totally relevant. The only advisement is to constantly remind oneself that the text is only on the topic of classical fields to the exclusion of any sections explicitly on quantum theory.

Clear and pedagogical about modern theoretical physcis.......1998-08-27

This book was originally published in Denmark in a typewritten form. I gives a very clear treatment of many aspects of modern theoretical physics on the advanced undergraduate or graduate level. Electromagnetism, gauge theories, path-integrals, differential geometry, and other central topics are treated with a minimum of unnecessary abstraction and a lot of examples and applications.

Description:
Twenty-four hour averaged concentrations of PM"2"."5 and PM"1"0 have been measured at UK urban sites using dichotomous samplers. Four site pairs have been selected, each of which comprises a busy roadside site and a nearby urban background location. Differences between roadside and urban background concentrations are interpreted in terms of street geometry and atmospheric circulations. Markedly different patterns of behaviour are observed between the more enclosed and more open sites. At the former, the traffic increment in particle mass (difference between roadside and background sites) tends to be independent of the magnitude of concentrations. At the more open sites, there is a tendency for the traffic increment in particle mass to increase with increasing concentration. At one site, with an asymmetric building configuration across the street, the behaviour is wind-direction dependent with higher traffic increments observed when the air above the urban canopy passes first over the taller buildings before apparently creating a recirculating vortex over the roadway. Incremental coarse to incremental fine particle ratios vary greatly between sites (0.21-0.61 on average), the values increasing with the total traffic volume at the site.
