Disjointed but interesting set of essays.......2000-06-19

The book is a collection of disjointed but interesting essays on the general topic of equity derivatives. There is a heavy US bias in the material and none of the topics are covered in much depth. Nor does there seem to have been much in the way of editorial control over the way that essays are linked to form a theme (the treatment of covered warrants is a clear case here).

One to get if the company are paying since, in a book this big on a sparsely covered topic, there is some interesting stuff here.

A clear explanation of various derivative instruments........1996-05-16

This is an excellent Anthology of an often maligned and misunderstood subject. The forward is written by Fischer Black who is a pioneer in the derivatives industry. These are clearly written essays on the multiple and intelligent methods of using derivatives in varying investment environments. This is a book about financial choices and the opportunities that abound for end users of these products to hedge, diversify, insure against disaster and customize investment positions. This book should be on the desk of every Treasurer or Money Manager who is entrusted with fiduciary responsibilities.

While the story is sometimes a bit much, this fictional account gives an interesting look into what keeps animal health authorities awake at night. I sent a copy to my mother who has never quite understood what I do. Now I have to convince her not to worry about the fictional villains. The risk to our country of either intentional or accidental introduction of a foreign animal disease is frightening enough. The fact that we are still scrambling to get ready for such an event is even more of a worry. Both come through loud and clear in this book.

Despite being caused by one of the smallest animal viruses, FMD is the most feared infection of domestic livestock; why is this so? There are three main reasons: 1) its facility for rapid spread is tremendous - it is often quoted as being the most infectious disease agent known; 2) its high morbidity - typically all members of a flock or herd of susceptible animals will become infected; 3) the loss of productivity associated with infection is about 25% - an unsupportable financial burden in modern farming practice. Its destructive potential has long been recognised and even in the 19th century considerable sums were invested in research into the nature and control of the disease. Because of this initial support and its continuation through the intervening years FMDV research has scored some notable goals in the advancement of fundamental virology. For example, it was the first animal disease to be shown to be caused by a virus, given the definition of a virus as an agent that could not be removed by filtration procedures recognised to eliminate bacteria. This early crucial observation has been followed by a string of milestone achievements in our understanding of the physical and biological nature of the virus and in methods for its control.

This book summarises our current knowledge of FMD and FMDV, all of the authors who contributed to this volume are key players in their specialist areas within the FMDV story. Some were heavily involved with the diagnosis and control that the outbreaks of 2001 occasioned and the book benefits from including contributors with first hand experience of recent events.
