      Book Description

In just one generation's time, mutual funds have become an inescapable factor in America's financial picture. From fewer than 10 million mutual fund accounts in 1977, fund companies now report more than 135 million accounts--with more than 75 times the net assets! In that same time, the number of available funds has also skyrocketed, from just over 425 mutual fund companies to nearly 6,000, with risk/reward possibilities that are as widespread and perplexing as the market itself. So while mutual funds have proven to be a low-maintenance, effective way for Americans to build wealth over the long term, the majority of investors still wonder: Where can I get the most bang for my buck?

      Download Description

Sheimo examines 50 commonly-accepted mutual fund axioms and truisms, giving the reader a surprisingly comprehensive overview of what a mutual fund is and how it works. 30 illustrations. 225 pp.

5 out of 5 stars An informative introduction to the basics of copyrights.......2002-11-14

The Librarian's Guide To Intellectual Property In The Digital Age by Timothy Lee Wherry (Director, The Robert E. Eiche Library, Pennsylvania State University) is a solid reference and informative introduction to the basics of copyrights, patents, and trademarks and written especially to serve the needs and questions of librarians. The issue of what constitutes fair use, modern-day disputes over file swapping services such as Napster, common misconceptions about patents, and a great deal more, is presented in easy-to-understand terms, in a text that sometimes adopts a question-and-answer format. The Librarian's Guide To Intellectual Property In The Digital Age is a highly recommended addition to professional and academic "Library Science" supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

                      Book Description

Quantum mechanics sets fundamental limits on the amount of information one can extract from a system with a single set of measurements. Recent results of new theoretical analyses and optical experiments have given rise to a more complete knowledge of the quantum properties of light. This book gives the first detailed description of this fascinating branch of quantum optics. The author describes some key results and tools from quantum optics and then discusses the quantum mechanical description of simple optical instruments before giving a detailed treatment of quantum tomography. The book concludes with a chapter devoted to the problem of the simultaneous measurement of position and momentum. This book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in quantum optics as well as anyone interested in the foundations of quantum mechanics or more general problems of quantum measurement.

                      4 out of 5 stars A simple book for a basic understanding.......2001-06-29

"Measuring the quantum state of light" is an hard challenge for any experimental physicist working in this field. The book provides as easy understanding of the basic principle of the optical homodyne tomography. I found it very nice and well prepared. Unfortunately the book was written before the really outstanding experimental results from different groups in different countries so the reference list is not really updated. It provides a basic introduction inside the general problematics of measuring a quantum state and gives a post-graduate level discussion on the homodyne tomographic principles and methods. It is a wonderful mean to enter the quantum measuring field from an open door. It is clearly addressed to readers with a substantial background in quntum mechanics and quantum optics. Unfortunately it is really expensive compared to the number of pages and the informations added to people that are already in the field and have followed its evolution by reading the scientific papers on the subject.

                            Book Description

New places and new voices make up Hub City Anthology 2, a collection of creative nonfiction set in and around the city of Spartanburg, S.C. From a window seat on a city bus to the hard pews of a country church, from a loading dock to a horse farm, these writers explore their relationships to the community that either gave birth to or nourished their art.Writing with humor, passion, and self-revelation, fourteen new Hub City writers take readers on a rambling tour of their hometown: a college campus at 3 a.m., a mill village in the grip of economic change, a junior high school confronting integration, a mortuary, an old-time barbershop, a retirement home, and a depot diner. Emerging from their essays is a greater story about the complexities of community life.
