An inspirational gift for every woman in the business world........2004-05-11
My name is Kevin Decker (kevindecker.com) and as an Author, Coach, and Motivational Speaker I read a lot of books about people, their motivations, and their relationships. As I read Bodacious all I could think about was women I know that would be inspired by it.
There is so much value in this book that it's hard to summarize. Here, by chapter, is a lesson learned, inspiring quote, or interesting situation from each.
1. Like nothing you've seen before - Today's economy offers greater risk and greater reward than ever before. Mary creates the context for her story talking about the situation as it exists today and her journey to Bodaciousness.
2. Bodaciousness starts on the inside - Next she looks at how you define yourself and stop letting other people define who you are.
3. Staff your Bodacious start up self - Mary then shares about surrounding yourself with knowledgable people that respect, value, and encourage you.
4. Bodacious women take a stand - Get control over those things that you can control.
5. Bodacious women thrive on shift and change - Ok, now that you've taken a stand it's time to move, change, and adapt.
6. One thing I wish I'd understood before I left AOL - Find out about how the littlest fairy in Sleeping Beauty teaches us about office politics.
7. Breaking through to Bodaciousness - It's about being intentional, deliberate and winning instead of just surviving.
8. Bring It On - Read Mary's list of 11 ways to make your own luck.
Epilogue: Life's short, learn fast - Act Bodaciously, and love every minute of it!
Bodacious redefines the definition, perception, and expectations of successful business women. I can give no greater compliment than saying that I want my 4 year old daughter to grow up Bodacious!
Filling your glass........2003-08-12
Ms. Foley brings both the essences of a charismatic coach and a sober realist to the story of her rise at AOL. Bodacious! is an energetic read.
This is NOT one of those "How-the-planets-aligned-and-allowed-me-to-fulfill-my-manifest-destiny" kind of books. Both successes and failures are described honestly. (It's to the author's credit that she describes both her little failures and strategic failures as candidly as she chronicles her successes.)
Some passages of interest to look for:
* Business is business, and Ms. Foley advises the reader to NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY. It's an idea that's worth repeating ... over and over and over until Velcro personality traits morph into Teflon.
* Setting boundaries comes with risk, but you HAVE to set them. In Chapter 4, she writes about taking a stand, and also what to do when someone takes a stand with you. (And why you shouldn't worry about being thought of as a "b****".)
* Office politics. Everything you instinctively loathe about office politics is probably wrong. Ms. Foley tells you why the glass is not, in fact, half empty, but rather 3/4 full ... and rising. Trust me, her perspective will be an eye-opener for many. (Although I've seen these views implied before, I've never seen them addressed so unflinchingly dead-on.) Another gem is her succinct description of the unspoken rule changes when you start dealing with senior management. Even if you don't complete the rest of the book, make sure you read Chapter 6.
* Defeat and quitting well. A telling bit of business advice I received many years ago was, "Everybody knows everybody." Ms. Foley succinctly describes the why and how of quitting well. You may end up working for a supplier ... or ... heh heh heh ... a client.
Lastly, the author wants you to thrive in a world of constant change. Recognizing that the reader must choose the specifics of her own path, she does not offer false hope by providing a specific roadmap to "guarantee" success. Ms. Foley does, however, shine a light with her positive - and truthful - words.
And that bright red exclamation point.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2003-03-13
Many of the ideas in "bodacious" will sound familiar, since Mary Foley is advising women to be more assertive, strategic, competitive and political. It's the formula men have long used to get ahead, but Foley addresses her counsel directly to women, along with tips on how to overcome traditional ideals about acting feminine. Hardnosed or not, Foley writes in an engaging way, as she combines personal growth suggestions with examples from success stories, including her own. After a ten year career starting as a customer service rep, she became an AOL millionaire and retired. Now an author, speaker and personal coach, she dispenses advice in a catchy, casual style, which makes even familiar suggestions interesting. While some men may find it interesting to eavesdrop on these lists and reminders for women in the workplace, we from getAbstract recommend Foley's breezy career boost to women white collar and professional employees who are ready to pump up on pep talk.
Live Your Life in The "YES" Zone.......2002-06-08
Bodacious is a true "wake up call" for any woman who has put herself second especially in the work world. Through Mary's personal experiences, the reader has a multitude of opportunities to examine her choices and come to terms with what is and is not working in her life. Bodacious is written in small bites, with depth and humor, and is very compelling. I've already recommended it to several friends who are stuck in their own lives and who I believe can benefit from Mary's straight-forward insight. Every woman can be "Bodacious". It's all about choice!
Tips on how women can take control of the corporate world.......2001-11-09
AOL insider Foley experienced vast changes in her life as she moved from a customer service job at a computer company to heading the exploding AOL company. Bodacious! is both an autobiography of her experiences and a behind-the-scenes examination of AOL's start-up process and what it means to be a businesswoman in today's corporations. Included here are tips on how women can take control of the corporate world.

Modern Schwager.......2004-06-07
Okay, most folks know the now famous books by Schwager. This book is similar - except for the fact that the interviews are with the new breed of traders, M. Rogan LaBier, etc... A very interesting, fun read. The real question is: will these guys, going forward 20 years, still be traders? In Schwager's early book, many of the traders interviewed are today, in retrospect, the leaders of a generation. Has Baird picked the right guys? Only time will tell. It is a fun read, full of anecdotal stuff. But if you are looking for the traders to bare their souls and tell you exactlty what it is that they do to win, you'll have to look further. I say further and not elsewhere, because I've never seen the forum where they tell you just what they do. But if you want insight into the mindset of effective traders, this is it. Each chapter is an in-depth interview with a highly successful trader. But only time will tell if the Rogan LaBier s of this world continue to outperform the rest of us... Or whether they were just product of the Big Bubble - and will fade into obscurity - or blow up in some spectacular way.
A moderate trading book.......2003-06-27
If you are a casual amateur investor who enjoys reading trading books of the interview type, this is okay. If you aspire to be a pro and are actually a pro, you wont be satisfied with the depth and width of it. The trading styles of the interviewees, and so are the Q&As, are just so diverse that one can hardly grasp something "profitable" to his/her own trading. Of course, most of them do mention "no loss averaging, keep losses small, have discipline" blah blah blah, but do most of the trading books talk about the same stuff?
OK if you like Trading Books.......2002-01-02
The interviews in this book were interesting if you enjoy reading trading books. Even one or two usable nuggets of information for traders. However, if you are looking for a "how to book" you should look elsewhere.
Outstanding Overview of Electronic Trading.......2001-08-16
My background and experience are in the futures markets, but, like many traders enchanted by the recent extreme vacillations in the stock markets and by the new day trading phenomenon, I wanted to acquire some knowledge of electronic and stock trading. I have read numerous other introductory books on this topic, none of which I will relate here because they are largely inanely simplistic, but, suffice it to say that one need only purchase this book to obtain the requisite education on electronic trading. Dr. Baird is knowledgable, insightful, open and, most importantly, keenly aware of his subject and the subjects he interviews- all of whom offer diverse and interesting insights into the world of electronic trading. While this book will not teach you how to trade exactly- any trader must learn through experience what methods will fit them- it will provide a valuable and eclectic overview of electronic trading and some of the perils and opportunities that await one there. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for any trader looking for an intellectual avenue into electronic trading or to enhance and augment their existing understanding of markets.
Excellent Reviews.......2001-03-20
I really liked these interviews, great questions and interesting answers. I especially liked the ones with Joe DeDonna, Mike Reise and the guy who runs Island. I'd recc. this book to those who want to hear how "real" traders go about their craft.

Book Description
Acoustic logging is a multidisciplinary technology involving basic theory, instrumentation, and data processing/interpretation methodologies. The advancement of the technology now allows for a broad range of measurements to obtain formation properties such as elastic wave velocity and attenuation, formation permeability, and seismic anisotropy that are important for petroleum reservoir exploration. With these advances, it is easier to detect and characterize formation fractures, estimate formation stress field, and locate/estimate petroleum reserves. The technology has evolved from the monopole acoustic logging into the multipole, including dipole, cross-dipole, and even quadrupole, acoustic logging measurements. The measurement process has developed from the conventional wireline logging into the logging-while-drilling stage.
For such a fast developing technology with applications that are interesting to readers of different backgrounds, it is necessary to have systematic documentation of the discipline, including the theory, methods, and applications, as well as the technology's past, present, and near future development trends.
Quantitative Borehole Acoustic Methods provides such documentation, with emphasis on the development over the past decade. Although considerable effort has been made to provide a thorough basis for the theory and methodology development, emphasis is placed on the applications of the developed methods. The applications are illustrated with field data examples. Many of the acoustic waveform analysis/processing methods described in the book are now widely used in the well logging industry.
Book Description
The main objective of this book is to show that behind the bewildering diversity of historical speculative episodes, it is possible to find hidden regularities. Speculative bubbles require the study of various episodes in order for a comparative perspective to be obtained and the analysis developed in this book follows a few simple but unconventional ideas. To that end, the author demonstrates how some of the basic concepts of dynamical system theory, such as the notions of impulse response, reaction times and frequency analysis, play an instrumental role in describing and predicting speculative behavior.
Download Description
The main objective of this book is to show that behind the bewildering diversity of historical speculative episodes it is possible to find hidden regularities, thus preparing the way for a unified theory of market speculation. Speculative bubbles require the study of various episodes in order for a comparative perspective to be obtained and the analysis developed in this book follows a few simple but unconventional ideas. Investors are assumed to exhibit the same basic behavior during speculative episodes whether they trade stocks, real estate, or postage stamps. The author demonstrates how some of the basic concepts of dynamical system theory, such as the notions of impulse response, reaction times and frequency analysis, play an instrumental role in describing and predicting speculative behavior. This book will serve as a useful introduction for students of econophysics, and readers with a general interest in economics as seen from the perspective of physics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, highly readable and disproves the myth!.......2006-03-01
Econophysics a relative, new and exciting field often (and justifiably?) suffers from bad press, as this definition taken from http://www.worldwidewords.org/turnsofphrase/tp-eco2.htm points out:
"It is the application of the principles of mathematical physics to the study of financial markets. Experts are beginning to discover that the world economy behaves like a collection of electrons or a group of water molecules that interact with each other. With new tools of statistical analysis, like the recent breakthroughs in understanding chaotic systems, it is beginning to be possible to make sense of these hugely complicated systems (one year of the world's financial markets produces about 24 CD-ROMs' worth of data, so there's no shortage of material to number-crunch). As a result, specialists are addressing a variety of questions that are difficult or impossible to understand using conventional economic principles: Is the market random, or is there any underlying order? In particular, are there any long-term trends that can be foretold? Are financial crashes inevitable? Someone who is an expert in this arcane field is an econophysicist."
Here in lies its weakness, eoconphysics is percieved not only as mathematically, but also as conceptually non intutive and difficult for anyone but the the seasoned physicsist or mathematician who has had years of prior experience in statistics and mathematical physics in order to grasp both the qualitative and quantative flavor of the burgeoning filed!
Perhaps this was true until the advent of books like this, it is simple, straightforward approach not only captures the essence of the field but also provides useful history on the evolution of the field as a new sub discipline.
The text is remarkably readable and is accessible not only to graduate and undergraduate students in Physics and Economics but perhaps even to a good high school student with a working knowledge of statistics and calculus, with its focus on comparative emperical studies and the construction of models that reflect data as opposed to theory.
Each chapter presents plenty of data and the author at each step explains not only economically but alos physically what is occuring as he builds his models and explains his methods of analysis.
This is an excellent self contained book and a joy to read.
Do you care about real estate prices?.......2002-11-04
In their book on game theory John von Neumann
and Oskar Morgenstern observe that it is the
study of "free fall which brought forth mechanics".
But, contrary to conventional wisdom, the study of
free fall did not rest solely on observing the
fall of an apple.
The author aptly notes that it required the observation
of a whole set of falling bodies in order to
get rid of a bunch of unessential factors and to
single out the influence of gravity. And of course
it required Newton's genius to include into this
set of falling bodies the "fall" of the moon.
In short, by describing in detail a single
stockmarket crash one will fail to understand what is
common to ALL stockmarket crashes. The author extends
the argument even further: by focusing solely on stock
markets one will fail to recognize what is common
to a broad variety of speculative episodes.
One might think that there
is a big difference between a price peak for postage
stamps and one for stock prices but this difference may
be more appearant than real as indeed
is the difference between the fall of an apple and that
of the moon.
What kind of results are brough about by this
unconventional approach?
At the present time (October 2002) we are particularly
interested in real estate prices. Will they continue to
rise, will they stabilize or are they going to fall in the
coming years?
The sections on real estate price peaks provide several
clues:
1) It is in the most expensive markets
(e.g. San Francisco as opposed to say Pittsburgh, PA) that
prices begin to rise first at the start of the
peak; it is in these markets that prices peak first
which gives a hint about when the downturn will occur in
other markets; and it is in expensive
places that the price increases are the strongest.
2) Price peaks for real estate resemble those for
stocks in that they are almost symmetrical with respect
to the maximum; which means that where prices experienced
strong increases, they also experience
big declines.
The last part of the book provides a theoretical framework.
It begins with an insightful chapter that points out that
there are in fact two classes of speculative peaks: the
U- and the S-class. The first includes all bulky commodities,
the second comprises real property, collector books,
diamonds, bonds and in a general way
all items for which transportation cost plays no
role and for which investors can (at negligible cost)
select the item that they want to buy.
The last chapters show how these effects can be accounted
for provided one uses a model which includes a memory effect.
This means that one should use a dynamical equation of order
at least equal to two. In addition,
a basic parameter
is the proportion of investors,i.e. people who buy in order
to sell with a profit within a few years, with respect
to the number of "users"
who buy a house in order to live in it for say
a generation.
A superb book. On almost every page, good ideas
come swirling and densily packed.

A completely new, expanded edition of this classic college text book about two key kinds of writing in the Old Testament: wisdom and law. Completely revised and updated, the book also includes much more on literary interpretation.
Customer Reviews:
The Ordering of Israel's Life by Wisdom and Law.......2004-12-31
"An excellent treatment providing both overview and critical depth...Represents the culmination in thinking of one of the finest OT scholars alive today." Donald G. Schley
Law & Wisdom:
Law is the core of Israel's culture that established the Judeo-Christian universal moral value behind it. Law in the Old Testament practically means 'the Law promulgated by Moses', with sundry later modifications or additions, rules as to which have been inserted in the record of the Mosaic law. As an example, some have suggested the prohibition on trimming your beard [Lev. 19:27] relates to pagan practices that cut facial hair for magical purposes. So the universal behind this cultural would be, don't do the occult.
Wisdom is really an approach to life, a way of looking at the world and, for Israelites, a way of living out in very deliberate, rational ways their commitment to God.
-The quality of being wise; knowledgeable, and having the capacity to make due use of it; discernment and judgment; " Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding." Job 28:28.
-Acquired knowledge; erudition. "Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds." Acts 7:22, and
-The results of wise judgments; scientific or practical truth.
OT Wisdom Literature:
In the Hebrew Bible, 'wisdom literature' is generally understood to refer to Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes; among the Apocrypha, it includes Ecclesiasticus (The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach) and The Wisdom of Solomon. The extent to which other parts of the Bible can be described as `wisdom' is disputed, but certain Psalms seem to betray wisdom influence (e.g., Ps. 37). While Wisdom's roots go back to the early days of Israelite history, it began to flower in the latter part of the Old Testament period, and flourished in the Intertestamental period. The relationship between wisdom and apocalyptic and the extent to which the latter was influenced by the former also remains a debatable issue.
Characteristic traits:
In dealing with the Hebrew Wisdom literature it is demanded that the whole body of it, so far as it has come down to us, should be taken into consideration, and not merely those books that have been admitted into the Canon. For the distinction between canonical and non canonical Wisdom books is quite arbitrary.
The objective of the Hebrew sage is to preserve and transmit the acquired lessons of experience, so that one may learn to cope with life. Proverbs upholds the optimistic view shared by such books as Deuteronomy but disputed by Job and Ecclesiastes. IT is characterized by an absence of reference to the typical salvation beliefs, such as the patriarchal promises, the Exodus, or the Sinaitic covenant. While certain literary forms are cultivated: the discrete, separate saying, which is usually an admonition, expressed in two parallel lines; whether positive or negative.
Book Description & Review:
This revised edition, considerably expanded to take in the legal and didactic material, gives additive attention to the different literary types used by Israel's sages and to the social settings in which the saying came into existence and circulated thereafter. The main purpose of Professor Blenkinsopp, however, remains the same from the first edition, to trace the course of two related key streams of tradition, law and wisdom, throughout the history of Israel in the biblical period, and to demonstrate their essential line of continuity with classical Jewish thought and early Christian theology.
The title specificity for the book as; 'The Ordering of Life in Israel and Early Judaism,' leads the reader to believe that the versatile, in depth, author is just going to deal with OT wisdom literature impact on shaping of life in Israel. Although his integrated approach was much more instructing than a mere reconstructive analysis of wisdom literature within the canon, or critical comparative evaluation with Egyptian and other wisdom literature but he could not have done better treating Law as wisdom in his flowing discussion that maintained the Life in Israel as an ultimate goal, as his title implies.
As insightful Reviewer Lorna L. Wilson alleged for Crenshaw on the same subject, the same goes for Blenkinsopp. "The title of the book can be pleasantly deceiving. It goes well beyond the wisdom tradition found in the biblical books of Ecclesiates, Psalms, Proverbs, and Job. He takes a broader perspective and includes apocrypha writings as well as Egyptian and Mesopotamian literature."
Overall, this book covers more than its declared purpose claims, which makes this concise book an in-depth visualization rather than a conventional text. Despite the variety and novelty of its treatment, the method pursued in this book, serves an excellent job of exposing the various component of form, content, and themes found within wisdom literature, as canonized by the Great Church of Alexandria, and other pseudo epigraphic writings.
Praise & Reviews:
"An excellent little book. It combines serious scholarship with readability." Mary M. McGlone, Avila College (for the first edition)
"What a pleasure to find a book that takes seriously the meaning and importance of `law' in the Hebrew Bible...This book is a helpful introduction to the current state of critical theology...both informative and stimulating." The Universe
