Set on the eve of WWII, "Hangover Square" is the story of a seriously disturbed man, George Harvey Bone, who's fallen in with a bad crowd. Bone is a solitary gloomy man who lives in a hotel in Earl's Court, London. He has no family--except for an elderly aunt in Hunstanton. George doesn't work--instead he lives off of a modest nest egg and spends his days and nights hanging around a small-time actress, Netta, and her set of male admirers. George is obsessed with Netta, and although he originally impressed her with his ready ability to stand for rounds of drinks, now he's relegated to the status of lowly 'hanger-on.' He is one of "the class of men who desired her, who sought her favours, and to whom she intended to give no favours." He's tolerated--barely--for his money alone.

George is subject to 'moods.' When exposed to an unbearable level of emotional distress, his damaged personality copes by mental escape. He hears a "click" in his head, and then he 'wakes' up with another personality. Whereas George is normally quiet, gentle, and unassuming, his other secret self is cunning and violent. George is aware he 'blacks out' but has no memory of exactly what he does. Once he hears the 'click' he emerges into his other, fractured self, and he's momentarily confused until he finds his bearings: "it was as though he had dived into a swimming-bath and hit his head on the bottom, and was floating about, bewildered and inaudible to himself in hushed green depths."

Netta and her unpleasant friends constantly humiliate George, and in retaliation, during one of his moods, he plots her murder. Netta is blissfully unaware of this, and treats George abominably--using him to bolster her non-existent career. The novel tracks George's existence as he pathetically hopes for a crumb of attention from Netta and also records the episodes in which he flips from one personality to another. Patrick Hamilton's novel is atmospheric and tense as the story reveals George's boozy social world in the grimy smoke filled pubs of London. Netta is a fascinatingly bad yet strikingly beautiful character--a woman who is "sinisterly, devoid of all those qualities which her face and body externally proclaimed her to have--pensiveness, grace, warmth." "Hangover Square" is a gripping story of one man's descent into madness, and the act he deems necessary to gain escape from the unbearable torture of loving a woman who has no conscience. If you like the novels of Patrick Mcgrath, then you'll enjoy "Hangover Square" and its sad, lonely and ultimately complex protagonist. Criminally unknown and unheralded stateside, this book ranks alongside Julian MacLaren-Ross' "Of Love & Hunger" as a 20th century classic and, on the evidence currently cluttering up the bookshops and Oprah's club, will probably remain an unchallenged classic throughout the 21st century.

The trivialisation of humanity beneath the Superstate.......1999-07-29

Hamilton addresses the diminishing importance of the individual in the face of the modern superstate. This novel resembles in atmosphere the 'film noir' genre of the contemporary cinema. George Harvey Bone's pathetic career is 'sensationalised', made lurid and larger than life, so that he becomes like a figure in a melodrama. Hamilton uses language that focus the reader's view through those of Bone, self-obsessedly viewing his own actions, his "great golfers hands" on the golf club for example, as he tries to invest himself with some feeling of worth while sub-consciously plotting murder. Bone's schizophrenic world threatens to explode throughout the book , just as the dark clouds of war with Europe gather threateningly in the background. The tiny tragedy of Bone' s demise is deliberately made to read like pulp fiction, in a sense, and the report of his death, forced off the front page by the breaking out of war, is likewise reduced to a tabloid headline.

The whole setting of the book is artificial; "the agony of Netta beneath the electric light"; the great wave of laughter (the world's laughter) that breaks over Bone as he enters the lime-lit Brighton theatre, are part of the harsh artificiality of the world that Bone inhabits. His friends are cynical and talk enthusiastically of fascism.

I am reminded by this book of the world described in Henry Miller's early work (Tropic of Capricorn etc) and of George Orwell's 'Coming up for Air' in which, once again, events build against the mounting threat of World War II, and the protagonists (George 'Fatty' Bowling) sense of personal history, values and identity are buried by the onslaught of suburban sprawl and its attendant advertising, materialism and the dislocation of community.

Hamilton predicts the present day world of media obsession with personal agony, which trivialises all human anguish and tribulation, reducing human experience and suffering to a commodity to be consumed, rather than a shared touchstone of communication, understanding and empathy.

Hamilton's brilliance lies in the clever contrivance of allowing us to feel Bone's pathetic agony, and yet to see it transformed into a trite, turgid melodrama, which is interchangeable in the daily press with a major international war. This is the kind of attitude, towards the small business of being human, that was necessary to prepare the world for the introduction of concentration camps and mass political executions.

Imagine George Harvey Bone as a character in a Thomas Hardy novel: (Bone could be transformed into a country rube quite easily!) His unfortunate story would be imbued with a sense of sanctity and respect that Hamilton deliberately defiles and destroys before our very eyes, using exactly the same means in achieving this end as the media of his day, and as the media of the present day does in a way that both Hamilton and Orwell could forsee, perhaps, but surely never appreciate the oppressive monstrous extent to which it has come.

This is one of the last novels, it seems to me, written before the obsession with the selfish concerns of the individual (the first article of faith of capitalism) became the only concern of the writer. Hamilton's book clearly indicates the coming of this self obsession. From here on, solipsism rules OK?

This is truly one of the literary masterpieces of the 20th century...it's a sad commentary on our country when this is unavailable in the US while so much trash can be had in every mall bookstore. Netta is without a doubt the most memorable villain in modern literature.

Simple, stupid George is in with a bad crowd - the sinister Peter, his crowd of unemployed hangers-on and the beautiful but cruel Netta with whom George is love. Spurned over and over, humiliated and ultimately resented for his weakness, it becomes increasingly difficult not to offer George your greatest sympathy, even given his occasional psychotic episodes where he realises he must kill Netta and escape his flimsy existence. This tale is an intense and moving study into the pain of unrequited love.

Any book that deals with uniforms has to have good, real looking pictures. this book only has two. All the other color pictures do not look real and they look very old. But, most pictures in this book are b/w.In this book it doesn't go very in depth about the uniforms.

Accurate, Thorough, Enlightening.......2000-06-24

If I had to reduce a review of this book to one sentence it would be this: If it has Rene Chartrand's name on it, buy it.

Rene Chartrand is one of the most meticulous and accurate researchers that is available today. Additionally, he is an excellent author and enjoys his subject matter. His books are well-research, scholarly, and authoritative. This one is no different.

He covers the subject matter thoroughly, and illustrates it with excellent examples of uniforms using the talents of Rousselot, Detaille, and Herbert Knotel, the last borrowed from the superb collection of Colonel John Elting.

This is not just another uniform book. It is logically organized, has some excellent original artwork by Christa Hook, and can stand on its own as an accurate reference work.

Eye candy, but not a reference work.......2004-03-29

This is a translation/reprint of a Musee de l'Armee publication.
The anonymously authored introductory text is very brief and
offers little beyond a short history and warning not to take
the plates (less than a 1/3 of the originals) on face value.
There is a recommendation for a work on the uniform regulations
themselves, but, of course, it's in French. There are no notes
on the plates.

The plates, however, are very well done, and it's well worth
picking up as a remainder, even if it's just a picture book.

The 1812 French Uniform Regulations.......2003-06-30

This is an interesting and very useful volume, but it isn't for the novice. While there is an excellent introduction to the book, there are no captions and explanations for the seventy-six uniform plates. They are titled, so you know what they represent, but there is no detail that is explained.

These are a representative sample of the new uniform regulations, commonly referred to as the Bardin Regulations, that were confirmed for the Grande Armee in 1812, but were probably not issued in any quantity until 1813. They are also the official illustrations used for the 1812 Regulations. There were two volumes of uniform plates, and two volumes of text.

The detail and clarity of the plates are excellent. They are in a larger format than normal and in full color. They only cover the French line units-the Imperial Guard is not covered at all because they were not affected by the Bardin Regulations as they had their own uniform regulations separate from the line and light troops.

The plates cover general officers and all the branches of the army: infantry, cavalry, artillery and train, as well as the Swiss regiments and the engineers. In short, there is much to recommend about this volume and not too much to criticize. It should, however, be used with other uniform references to give more explanation, but for the experienced enthusiast and uniformologist this volume contains enough information to stand on its own.

Uniformology at its Best.......2000-06-24

Jack Dempsey is one of the authorities on uniforms of the Napoleonic period. His work is truly definitive, and his research is impeccable. This volume is a must for all students and enthusiasts of the period.

This book covers the prints on the Grande Armee by one of the famous artists of the period, greatly enhanced by the author's expert text. Dempsey knows his subject matter and tells it like it is. His work is thoroughly reliable, and this book belongs on every Napoleonic bookshelf.

I highly recommend this, and all of Dempsey's work. This ranks in the same category as the uniform volumes by Colonel John Elting, Michel Petard, Eugene Leliepvre, and Lucien Rousselot. It is a primary uniform source for the Napoleonic period and an outstanding addition to our collective knowledge of the period.

A real uniform research........2000-01-14

This is the way how a book about the hisory of military uniform should be written! We'd got so many of fake ones - and this one is a real treasure! There is only a thing - the author states that there is no material containing Hussars regiments which has been written and put together in one volume. I would like to reffer to the great L. Fallou's work "Notre Hussards", published in 1902 in Paris that pretty much covers the subject of the hussars' development starting from the very first regiments of the XVII century.

Outstanding........1999-05-12

Little needs to be said. If this book were only a reproduction of these plates, it would be a bargain, but Dempsey's commentary provides a great deal of insight placing the plates in context and identifying anomolies and commonalities. I can only add that I have no idea how a set of contemporary plates will illustrate the professional or mercenary aspects of the army!?

I found it an excellent book but it really lacks specifically an in-depth analyses of the mercenary and professional aspect of Napoleon's Army.

This subject has not been neglected, it has been largely forgotten.

The French armed forces during the Napoleonic period, encompassing the Grande Armee, the navy, and what- and whomever else could bear arms, numbered over one million at the Empire's height.

This interesting, engrossing tome by a definite authority on the period, fills a long-neglected gap that helps us with our understanding of the period and our general knowledge of those that fought for France and Napoleon from 1792-1815. It also gives us a few surprises.

Exotic and esoteric units and fighting men grace the pages of this interesting volume, highlighted by the realistic, superb paintings of Francis Back, who also illustrated the author's books on Napoleon's navy and the French Army in the War of the American Revolution.

Here you will find the top or round hat as a definite, and quite handsome, item of military uniform, the French use of sepoys (native troops) in India, and the fortunes and foibles of France's overseas possessions.

Introduction to Sol-Gel Processing does not intend to be exhaustive on the research done in this field. However the most important facts about the most recent developments, including mixed organic-inorganic sol-gels known as hybrid materials and the use of surfactants and micelles, are addressed. More precisely, the book focuses on gathering the main theories related to sol-gel processing in a comprehensive manner, so as to provide the most important scientific basis to students.
Introduction to Sol-Gel Processing is organized in such a way that each chapter corresponds to one of the main steps in a chronological order of application of sol-gel techniques to the synthesis of materials. The book first presents elementary solvent chemistry, in particular the partial charge model theory. Next, theories on the nucleation and growth of particles and on the steric or electrostatic stabilization (also known as D.L.V.O. theory) of colloidal suspensions, are gathered in a chapter on colloidal particles. Another chapter is devoted to the theories on gelation. Gels, their structure and properties at large such as their swelling, shrinkage or drying behavior, also constitute an important chapter. After drying, gels become almost traditional ceramic materials and they are often submitted to thermal treatments during which they can phase-transform and sinter. Two chapters offer an opportunity to gather the main theories related to these two fields. Finally, the main applications are reviewed according to the domains of application, particularly for coatings, filtering membranes, and catalysts.
