    Book Description

For all the people scratching their heads at those callow, dot-com millionaires and asking "why not me?"--here is real help for answering that nagging question. Do You Dot-Com? is the first how-to-do-it guide to navigating the challenging, stimulating--and sometimes stupefying--transition from a stiff, structured offline organization to the youthful, chaotic environment of an Internet company.

Directed especially to traditionally trained managers and professionals, the book spells out the potential culture clashes...provides a litmus test for deciding if they're ready to shed the suit...and outlines a pathway to help them adapt to the new and often confusing world of Internet commerce. Easy-to-read and anecdotal, Do You Dot-Com? is written from the refreshing, first-hand perspective of someone who has made the leap. After nearly 20 years working for stodgy companies such as The New York Times, PaineWebber, and Knight-Ridder, 40-something Gustav Carlson moved to a fast-paced, fast-growing dot-com.

It's a transition that's happening more and more as Internet companies recognize their glaring need for traditional management talent. This book prepares those managers and professionals for coping in a workplace bereft of old-fashioned hierarchies, compensation packages, and dress codes...and helps them successfully adapt their management skills to the dot-com world.

    Book Description

This is the first book to present a synthetic view of Roman banking and financial life from the fourth century BC to the end of the third century AD. It describes the business deals of the elite and the professional bankers and the interventions of the state. It shows to what extent the spirit of profit and enterprise predominated over the traditional values of Rome, what economic role these financiers played, and how that role compares with that of their later counterparts.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Roman banking: nuts and bolts.......2007-09-13

The nuts and bolts of money lending and banking in the Roman empire are explained here. But beyond that, this book is almost a sociology of how people dealt with money in the Roman era.

Three major themes emerge, largely in comparison with how banking systems have developed in the modern era. First, the government had no large banks to resort to when funding deficit spending, and where there were no bills of exchange (i.e., money was metal, although there might have been a secondary market in personal notes of moderate sums of indebtedness). Second, there was a prevalent attitude that, with the exception of a small number of professionals (who are described very well), money was seen as a secondary asset (ascribed presumptively simply to attitude, rather than with any better explanation). Third, unlike modern governments, the largess of Emperor and senate is a suprisingly large economic factor.

If there are two criticisms, then the first is that, at times, the assertion of opinion and the potshots taken at other writers, both being often without supporting evidence, can create skepticism; perhaps this reflects the Gallic academic background of the author. Second, in the absence of any separate treatment elsewhere, the opportunity to compare Roman 'maritime' loans with modern marine insurance systems has been missed.

If you want to understand how monetary systems worked during the Roman empire, then this is your book. And the current liquidity crisis in the modern international banking system (late summer 2007) generates even more to reflect upon within these fascinating pages.

    Book Description

This joint World Bank/VIZ Media series addresses global issues through manga graphic novels targeting teenagers. The first 3 volumes focus on poverty, HIV/AIDS, and the environment. But the series' immediate appeal is the coming-of-age tale of orphaned teenager Rei, who dreams of becoming the greatest fighter in the world! Rei's trainer takes the form of various animals and, much to Rei's disappointment, strives to develop his student's mind, heart, and spirit more than his fighting technique! Though the themes are grim, the pages are full of action, romance, and even humor. The guises Rei's trainer assumes inevitably lead to misunderstandings and slapstick.

Rei's pride and ambition set him up for many a fall, but throughout the series, his good heart and inability to walk away from those in need makes him an engaging and likeable protagonist who will appeal to young men and women alike.

    3 out of 5 stars Educational Manga.......2005-12-31

"1 World Manga" is the story of a young street kid claiming to be studying martial arts under a Master that change his appearance to any animal.

This edition, simply titled "Passage 2 - HIV/AIDS - First Love", is the next step in Rei's training. But his training doesn't seem to be about martial arts but rather of life as he learns about the harsh facts of HIV/AIDS when he is accepted into the home of a woman named Somalee and meets her little brother and sister - as well her mother, who is dying of AIDS. By helping Somalee's family, Rei learns more about the facts as well as the do's and don'ts of HIV/AIDS.

Like book 1, this book has over 30 pages of story plus an additional three pages of facts and info. This story is also aimed for the younger crowd - especially for the pre-High School teenagers.

    3 out of 5 stars Manga With A Message.......2005-12-31

This is a slightly different type of manga in which the reader follows the adventures of a young man, named Rei, who rescues a puppy - only to discover that it can talk as it is a magical being that offers to train Rei.

In the first book (simply titled "Passage 1: Poverty - A Ray of Light"), Rei meets a young woman named Ayeesha whose husband was badly injured in a war and they do not have the money to feed their children. Rei's past of stealing the food he needs to survive on the streets begins to haunt him as he meets the family.

This is a very short manga (the only real reason I gave it a low score), but it is also a good one. The story itself is only about 32 pages long with an addition 3 pages of info about poverty and how one can help.

"1 World Manga" is creation of Viz Media and The World Bank. While older manga fans might find its short tale a bit boring and lacking of entertainment, it will be more suited to the younger crowd (pre-High School).

      Book Description

This case study of a business that operated in the port of Puteoli on the bay of Naples in the first century AD draws on an archive of wax tablets published in Italy in 1999. The documents record banking, commercial, and legal transactions involving the bankers Sulpicii and their clients and customers. Transactions include loans made to corn traders, sea-going merchants and other businessmen, leases from warehouses, disputes over outstanding debts, and deposits of cash made by the imperial household. These documents and other case studies shed light on how the Romans conducted their business affairs.

            Book Description

This advanced criminal law casebook addresses substantive and procedural areas of importance in white-collar criminal practice. Its comprehensive and practical examination of current issues makes it a valuable resource for practitioners as well as a challenging teaching tool. The book covers perjury, false statements, false claims, obstruction of justice, mail and wire fraud, public corruption, computer crime, insider trading, conspiracy, RICO, and money laundering. The chapters devoted to these central substantive provisions also highlight the considerations that affect prosecutors' choices in pursuing and charging cases, and defense counsel's challenges in resisting such choices. The materials further explore the theory and practice of sentencing under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines applicable to individuals and to organizations, and the law and policy governing entity and managerial liability.

The balance of the book is devoted to examination of subjects of particular concern to white-collar practitioners, including grand jury practice; discovery; the privilege against self-incrimination as applied to testimony and to the production of documents; formal and informal immunity; the attorney-client privilege and the work product doctrine in a corporate setting; representation issues (including discussion of joint defenses and the "no-contact" rule); plea-bargaining and cooperation; and parallel proceedings. The materials are intended to challenge students to explore practical, ethical, policy, and institutional issues, as well as to master applicable legal standards.

                              Book Description

Benthic foraminifera have played a central role in deep-sea biostratigraphic, paleoecological, and paleoceanographical research over the last thirty years. These single-celled marine protists are important because of their geographic ubiquity, their abundance and diversity in Cretaceous to Recent deep-sea sediments, because of the relationship between occurrence of many modern species and particular water masses, and because of their utility as indicators of environmental conditions both at and below the sediment-water interface. In addition, stable isotopes obtained from deep-sea benthic foraminiferal tests provide paleoceanographers with environmental information that is proving to be of major significance in studies of global climatic change.PaleoBase: Deep-Sea Benthic Foraminifera presents the latest taxonomic revision for 300 species in the form of an illustrated, state-of-the-art relational database. Relying primarily on material collected by the Deep-Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and Ocean Drilling Programme (ODP) for examples of characteristic deep-sea species, and containing color, digital composite illustrations of unprecendented accuracy, this database represents a significant step forward in the presentation of systematic information in general, and microfossil systematics in particular. For the first time, consistent and reliable information for each species morphology, taxonomy, synonymy, bathymetery, paleoecology, chronostratigraphy, biostratigraphy is summarized in one place and in a searchable format. In addition, the database contains a morphological key for each species and citations to over 350 references from the primary scientific literature.PaleoBase: Deep-Sea Benthic Foraminifera provides earth scientists effectively instant access to all the information necessary to make accurate biostratigraphic, paleoceanographical, and paleoecological interpretations based on benthic foraminiferal data in a structured, easy-to-use manner. The database will be invaluable to professional micropaleontologists, researchers, and students of micropaleontology.

                                Book Description

Environment and the Developing World brings together the various aspects of environmental studies and management (earth and natural sciences, engineering and economics) as they relate to the developing world. It discusses environmental issues as well as the techniques and infrastructure for their management at various levels: global, national and local. The examples range from global warming and ozone depletion to the management of water resources and indoor air pollution. The book stresses the interrelated and interdisciplinary nature of environment, discusses the concept of sustainable development, explores the role of non-governmental organisations, and evaluates the importance attributed by international and multilateral organisations to monitoring environmental aspects of development projects. It critically reviews various economic, social and regulatory policies which address environmental issues. The different disciplines of the two authors (a physical geographer and a public policy economist) help to maintain the balanced and interdisciplinary nature of the book. Written primarily for advanced undergraduates, this is a stimulating text for any environment related course. Written in simple language and avoiding unnecessary jargon the book explains clearly the technical aspects of environmental management. Profuse illustrations, a large number of examples from a range of geographical areas, boxed case studies and stimulating exercises make the book attractive and comprehensive. All these features make the book a unique teaching tool in environmental management in the developing world.

                                  Book Description

This book is devoted to the study of evolution of nonequilibrium systems. Such a system usually consists of regions with different dominant scales, which coexist in the space-time where the system lives. In the case of high nonuniformity in special direction, one can see patterns separated by clearly distinguishable boundaries or interfaces.

The author considers several examples of nonequilibrium systems. One of the examples describes the invasion of the solid phase into the liquid phase during the crystallization process. Another example is the transition from oxidized to reduced states in certain chemical reactions. An easily understandable example of the transition in the temporal direction is a sound beat, and the author describes typical patterns associated with this phenomenon.

The main goal of the book is to present a mathematical approach to the study of highly nonuniform systems and to illustrate it with examples from physics and chemistry. The two main theories discussed are the theory of singular perturbations and the theory of dissipative systems. A set of carefully selected examples of physical and chemical systems nicely illustrates the general methods described in the book.

                                    Book Description

This book contains six sets of lectures by internationally respected researchers on the statistical physics of crystal growth. The emphasis in the papers is on a description of underlying mechanisms and elaboration of simple models that provide a transparent physical picture. Viewed from a novel vantage point, they cover not only very recent developments in the phenomena of shape and growth, but also reflect on old problems that have not always received the attention they deserve. Contributors include P. Nozières, C. Caroli, B. Caroli, B. Roulet, J.S. Langer, Y. Pomeau, M. Ben Amar, L. Sander, J. Krug and H. Spohn.

                                      Book Description

This book deals with the formulation of the thermodynamics of chemical and other systems far from equilibrium, including connections to fluctuations. It contains applications to non-equilibrium stationary states and approaches to such states, systems with multiple stationary states, stability and equi-stability conditions, reaction diffusion systems, transport properties, and electrochemical systems. The theoretical treatment is complemented by experimental results to substantiate the formulation. Dissipation and efficiency are analyzed in autonomous and externally forced reactions, including several biochemical systems.

                                          Book Description

While it is well known that American writers of the early national period were preoccupied with differentiating their work from European models, Jared Gardner argues that the national literature of the United States was equally motivated by the desire to differentiate white Americans from blacks and Indians. Early American writers were drawn to fantasies of an "American race," and an American literature came to be defined not only by its desire for cultural uniqueness but also by its defense of racial purity. Gardner follows the shifts in American narrative's engagement with race, from Royall Tyler's Algerine Captive through the novels of Brockden Brown and Cooper, to Poe's tales and Douglass's autobiographies, narratives that differently sought to rewrite the intersections of racial and national identity the first generation had plotted.

The larger story Master Plots describes is how the racial language of "slavery" and "savagery" helped nationalist writers plot a unique identity for the new nation and the cost this "master plot" exacted when the empty rhetoric of one generation confronted the historical facts of slavery and Native American Removal in the next. The question of what it meant to be an American had lost none of its severity and the desire for an answer none of its urgency. As early nationalist writers wrestled with the question, they proved how hard a question it is to answer and how great are the dangers in scripting its answers too easily.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Race and Early American Literature. Period........2007-03-24

Jared Gardner's book has become a legend in its own time among American literature scholars in both the US and worldwide. And for good reason. Its witty prose, its rigorous scholarship, and its trendsetting, counterintuitive argument about the centrality of racial alterity to early American nation-formation have made MASTER PLOTS a model for scholars to follow and for students, both in and out of the university setting, to learn from. If you care about American literature at all, this book is a must-have on your bookshelf. It offers clever and compelling readings of American writers both canonical (Cooper, Poe) and not so much so (Brockden Brown). Gardner's book illuminates these writers as much as it illuminates a whole culture, history, and way of life that remain very much with us to this day. The writing is both really sophisticated and very accessible--so even readers not necessarily familiar with academic writing will get a lot out of it.

                                          2 out of 5 stars A conventional critic's humdrum attempt. .......2007-03-14

It's hard to imagine that a book containing only 185 pages of actual text could be so tiresome to navigate. Congrats - Jared Gardner. The subject matter seems interesting enough & the notes section is well prepeared. Unfortunately for the reader, this paperback isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Here's one example the author gives to prove his point:

In Poe's Berenice, Poe describes how his cousin/lover contracts a fatal disease which leaves her disfigured and unrecognizable. Poe becomes obsessed with Berenice's teeth & after she dies he breaks into her tomb & retrieves them. The author equates Poe's obsession with the teeth to Poe's desire to uncover the perfect white race - basically that he is racist.

Obviously, Poe was an incestuous [...]by today's standards & given the time in which he lived - I don't doubt that he had racist views. However, the author's attempts to prove this are laughable at best. He offers regurgitated conjecture in place of thoughtful originality.

Jean Sibelius once said ""Pay no attention to what critics say. No statue has ever been put up to a critic." In Master Plots, Jared Gardner gives the reader a good example for why this is so true.
