Book Description

Leaving their families, their friends, and the lives they had known behind, thousands of young information technologists flocked to northern California in the 1980s and 1990s to live the Silicon Valley dream of overnight wealth and power. What they didn't know was that the Silicon Valley dream is really just the American Dream gone ballistic, a place where money and power are the only things that matter in life.

In this enlightening critique, counselors Mel and Pat Krantzler contend that Silicon Valley is more than just the name of a geographical area, it is the name for a psychological obsession found anywhere people believe that instant fame and fortune can be gained through silicon chips and Web sites. Building on this foundation, they reveal that the obsession nourishes itself on an illusion of power and instant gratification. And like heroin and cocaine, it is highly addictive, promising total happiness, but often ending in disarray and despair, leaving even wealthy and successful individuals feeling "down and out." The first book of its kind, DOWN AND OUT IN SILICON VALLEY is as up-to-date as today's headlines.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I was part of the bust.......2006-03-08

These people have no clue what they are talking about. The book is is an obvious attempt to cash in on the glee some people have of seeing the tech bubble burst, because they were not part of it. Most of us have moved on. Most have moved on to other high tech jobs, but some to the law, medicine, politics, finance, and even back to tech again. Most of the people in the tech world are either very happy because they get to do the work they love, or they got out because they were here for a quick buck. The individuals these people see in their practice need help. The ones who thought that moving to the bay area would fix their life had problems to begin with. Duh.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2003-01-10

You can almost smell the envy and the "I told you so" attitude of the writers. Ironic when this book is no more than attempt to cash in (while of course, occupying the moral high ground) on the .com
mania so bitterly missed by the authors.

I noted that one of the chapter titles misspells the word
"Silicon" as "Silcon"...

There are many fascinating stories to be told about fear and greed in the valley --this book has none of them.

1 out of 5 stars Good concept, terrible execution.......2002-12-06

There's a lot to be said about the dark side of Silicon Valley. Unfortunately, Mel and Pat Krantzler aren't the ones to say it. I picked up the book hoping for a comprehensive study of the Silicon Valley area, it's people, the suicide rates, divorce rates, amount of time spent sitting in traffic, and obviously the health and mental problems of its denizens.

Instead, what I got was page after page of anecdotal evidence. One example was the chapter entitled: "The myth of gender equality." What I expected from the book is a survey of women working in Silicon Valley companies. Instead, the chapter was dominated by an interview with ONE successful woman. The other chapters are similar.

As a Silicon Valley resident of more than 10 years, I'm disappointed. There is much to criticize in the valley, but the criticism should be factual and statistical, rather than anecdotal. (The two authors run a counselling service, so obviously, the only people they ever encounter are people who need help!)

    Book Description

The international financial system is in a state of flux, with rapidly changing legislation influenced by financial scandal in the United States (namely Sarbanes-Oxley). The purpose of this book is to survey both the American and the European Union financial system and regulation, with particular emphasis on the United Kingdom, the European financial capital; to catalog what has yet to be done regarding regulatory initiatives in the United States; to investigate the work and purpose of international financial organizations; to investigate theories of financial disclosure and corporate governance; and to investigate the failed attempt to re-regulate the Japanese capital markets. Unveiling a new role and mandate for financial regulation, Friedland concludes that additional regulation is needed to stabilize the international banking system. He asserts that the international accounting system must be rationalized through legal structures, and that the international monetary system is in dire need of a major overhaul.

    Book Description

Why has antitrust legislation not lived up to its promise of promoting free-market competition and protecting consumers? Assessing 100 years of antitrust policy in the United States, this book shows that while the antitrust laws claim to serve the public good, they are as vulnerable to the influence of special interest groups as are agricultural, welfare, or health care policies. Presenting classic studies and new empirical research, the authors explain how antitrust caters to self-serving business interests at the expense of the consumer.

The contributors are Peter Asch, George Bittlingmayer, Donald J. Boudreaux, Malcolm B. Coate, Louis De Alessi, Thomas J. DiLorenzo, B. Epsen Eckbo, Robert B. Ekelund, Jr., Roger L. This book provides the first comprehensive review of pattern formation in ciliates, along with an analysis of general mechanisms of pattern formation. The author emphasizes the integrative mechanisms that encompass the entire cell surface, and pays particular attention to genetic and
non-genetic mirror-image reversals of asymmetry. A conceptual model for large-scale intracellular organization is included. The perspective derived from ciliate studies is applied to the early development of multicellular organisms, particularly embryos of Drosophilia. The book will be accessible
to developmental biologists with no prior familiarity with ciliates.

            Description:
A distinguishing feature of conservation planning and analysis methods is that they generally rely on biological assessments carried out using scientific sampling protocols and methodologies. Few conservation planning methods explicitly include what is variably described as values, understanding and perceptions. In this study, we examine the potential use of local values of biological resources in conservation planning by comparing this with scientific biological assessment of the same region, using the example of Prince William Sound, Alaska (USA). Specifically, we compare the spatial coincidence of local perceptions of biological importance (or value) identified in a survey of Alaska residents with biologically significant areas identified by scientists familiar with the area from a marine conservation workshop. The results indicate a moderate degree of spatial coincidence between local values and scientific assessment with obvious geographic areas of agreement and disagreement. We suggest that incorporation of local perceptions of biological importance can complement and strengthen scientific biological assessments and propose an iterative conservation planning process that includes both methodologies.

The direct simulation Monte Carlo (or DSMC) method has, in recent years, become widely used for engineering and scientific studes of gas glows that involve low densities or very small physical dimensions. This method is a direct physical simulation of the motion of representative molecules, rather than a numverical solution of the equations that provide a mathematical model of the flow. the computations are nolonger expensive and the period since the 1976 publication of the original Molecular Gas Dynamics has seen enormous improvements in the molecular models, the procedures, and the implementation strategies for the DSMC method. the molecular theory of gas flows is developed from first principles and is extended to cover the new models and procedures. 4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-12-12

Despite the odd typographical error, this book is outstanding. It is clear, concise and quite readable. Material is presented in a manner which is easy to understand. The only slight criticisms are that my copy did not include the promised computer disk, that often the descriptions of what the code does are often hard to understand and that the binding on the book is of extremely poor quality (my copy was losing pages within days of purchase). Otherwise very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Material -- This edition is terribly made..........2005-03-04

I gave the material in the book 5 stars, but the new edition 0 stars (at least for ~$200). My advisor just bought the newest edition (the old one finally falling apart after years of use) and it is cheaply made. The binding is already coming apart and the text is difficult to read because the text is fuzzy. Hopefully Dr. Bird will write a newer edition with some of the most recent advances and a better printing.

5 out of 5 stars Tour de Force.......2000-05-15

An astonishing accomplishment by the man who more or less invented the field of DSMC calculation. Includes a handy-dandy disk (with source) so you can run you own problem with a variety of different boundary conditions. See also Bird 1973, Phys Fluids, v16 pp1830-1834.

                    Book Description

This self-contained work is an up-to-date treatment of the basic theory of molecular gas dynamics and its various applications. Recent progress in the field has greatly enhanced the original theory and stimulated interesting and critical gas dynamic phenomena and problems. This book, unique in the literature, presents working knowledge, theory, techniques, and typical phenomena in rarefied gases for theoretical development and applications.

Basic theory is developed in a systematic way and presented in a form easily applied to practical use. After presenting basic theory and various simple flows, such as unidirectional or quasi-unidirectional flows and flows around a sphere, the author discusses additional topics, including flows induced by temperature fields, which are typical in rarefied gases; flows with evaporation and condensation; and bifurcation of flows in rarefied gases. The appendix contains many useful fundamental formulae, as well as an explanation of the theoretical background for the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, easily accessible to nonmathematicians and not found elsewhere in the literature.

Existence of the ghost effect has made molecular gas dynamics indispensable to the study of a gas in the continuum limit, traditionally treated by classical fluid dynamics. In this book, the ghost and non-Navier–Stokes effects are demonstrated for typical examples—such as Bénard and Taylor–Couette problems—in the context of a new framework. An infinitesimal curvature effect is also discussed, with a long-standing problem of the bifurcation of the plane Couette flow worked out as an example.

Molecular Gas Dynamics is useful for those working in different communities where kinetic theory or fluid dynamics is important: graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, and various branches of engineering. The work may be used as a self-study reference or as a textbook in graduate-level courses on fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, kinetic theory, molecular or rarefied gas dynamics, microflows, and applied mathematics.

                          4 out of 5 stars A nice start to a wonderful series.......2003-04-15

This book is the first volume in the wonderful Illustrated History of the World Series. This one covers human history from the evolutionary advent of mankind, through the earliest civilizations, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and finally the Assyrian empire. Along the way, the reader is treated to many colorful maps and pictures, and interesting sidebars.

This book is very good, and a give a nice start to a wonderful series. I found the book to be interesting, and quite accurate in its data. Overall, I liked the book, and highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Well-Written and Beautifully Illustrated Introduction.......2001-12-15

This is volume one of a ten volume series called The Illustrated History of the World. This first volume covers the origins of the human race through the first civilizations. It is divided into two sections There are three chapters in the first section which is called Before History. The first chapter is on our primate precursors. The second chapter deals with early Homo Sapiens, and the third chapter discusses the earliest beginnings of civilized behaviors like agriculture, animal domestication, metallurgy, and community life.

The second section covers the earliest civilizations and consists of four chapters. Although the book states that there are seven ancient civilizations (Mesopotamia, Crete, Egypt, India, China, Meso-America, and the Andes), it only focuses on the two earliest: Mesopotamia and Egypt. The second volume in the series discusses the early cultures of India and China and then moves on to discuss the early Greeks.

The book is filled with beautiful color illustrations. Every page has at least one and most are photographs of artifacts, art works, or scenes. The text is a bit conservative, only giving the most accepted interpretations of evidence and not mentioning other proposed theories. This makes it a good basic introduction and outline, but may be less useful to someone who wants to look at these subjects in greater depth. The lack of any bibliography of further readings is also a drawback for those wanting to seek more information. The type face is large and the lines are amply spaced. Couple this with the copious illustrations and the book is actually a very quick read for its size and length. It is a few steps above the approach of Dorling Kindersley books that are predominately illustrations with supporting text. With Roberts, the text is the major part, but the illustrations are definitely more than an after thought. This is a good introduction for the general reader. It is not going to be a lasting reference book that you will turn to again and again. Read it once and move on.

                          Book Description

A powerful, eerily beautiful book about self-expression -- and who the "first" painter might have been.

The moon of the singing grass has come and gone three times, and still there is no rain. Mishoo's prehistoric clan is starving, her little sister's arms like twigs. Can a Dream Catcher bring them rain? Mishoo's mother had been the clan's Dream Catcher. She spoke with spirits, trying to catch a dream of rain. Now she is a spirit herself. She tells a sleeping Mishoo: "You are Dream Catcher. You must go to the cave of the she-tiger." Mishoo dares to go-and there discovers rock that looks like dripping animal fat, rock like giant fangs from the saver-toothed tiger. Something stirs inside her. And as she picks up a charred stick from the fire and begins to draw the animal she sees buried in the stone, she wonders, "Am I catching spirits or being caught myself?" This powerful and strikingly original picture book provides a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric world as it imagines who the first painter might have been.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful---historical fiction about cave painting.......2003-06-25

Our family enjoyed this book, which is an imaginative story about the first cave painting. A tribe is starving and suffering with a lack of food and enduring a drought. The tribe's shaman has died and she passed the job onto her adolescent daughter named Mishoo. Fearing this responsibility, she has chosen not to "catch dreams" which is apparently the cause of both the drought and the lack of hunting success. Finally Mishoo follows the commands given by her mother and grandmother in her dreams...she goes to a sacred cave. Once in the cave she builds a fire and sees how the rock walls seem to come alive with shapes of animals. She uses her gathered clays to paint the walls.

The writing is poetic and eerie. The illustrations are gorgeous and set the mood perfectly.

When Mishoo returns to her tribe after three days of painting, it has just begun to rain. The rain will stimulate growth of the grasses, which will lure the animals back to the land. It ends by saying their hunting was successful and the tribe is thriving again.

Both the writing and the artwork drew us in and made us feel a part of the story. This is the first fiction historical book for children that I have found. It is the perfect addition to our homeschool curriculum for learning about early man and cave paintings.

Both my 3 and 5 year old boys enjoyed this story, although I needed to explain some of the passages such as what "moon of the singing grass" and "dream catcher" meant. I loved the way the author captured an artist's imagination and ability to imagine and "see" the finished piece before even starting work on it, how the rock walls seemed to speak to her and how she then created what she already saw in her mind's eye. This type of explanation is seldom seen in children's literature; I appreciated that.

A list of suggested related readings and background information about cave paintings are included at the end of the book.

We read this after borrowing it from the public library and we loved it so much, we must own a copy for our home library!

                          5 out of 5 stars One Word--WOW!.......2000-10-03

FIRST PAINTER literally took my breath away. It is a truly powerful and beautiful picture book--the words, the illustrations, and the design. I've read it three times in a row and I love it more with each rereading. FIRST PAINTER is Lasky's fictional story about what she imagines could have been the first cave painter. The story is told from the perspective of Mishoo, a young girl who is the shaman for her prehistoric tribe. There is a severe drought and their tribe is dying ("My younger sister, Erloo, is so thin her wrists are like twigs."). Mishoo must visit the cave of the she-tiger in one last attempt to bring water to her people. There, in the cave, the walls seem to come alive to Mishoo with their shadows and indents. She uses a fire stick and the colors from her spirit bundle to draw horses and bison and the she-tiger. She gathers energy from her paintings and finally emerges days later to clouds--"immense and woolly against the horizon." Rain has arrived, and so too has Mishoo's passion to paint again and again!

I've enjoyed Lasky's books for many years, but she has outdone herself this time. This book is brilliant--the words are simple, yet poetic and powerful. The first-person telling pulls me into the story (as close as I can come to being there in prehistoric times). The whole idea for the book is thought-provoking and should encourage many children's discussions and imaginings about not only who painted the first picture, but who started the first language (with words or gestures?), who made the first fire (by accident or on purpose?). Is the "need" for artistic expression solely a human need? On and on.

This is my first experience with Rocco Baviera's illustrations, but they won't be my last--what a master! He used bear grease, animal fur, raw earth pigments, and more to create his primitive and powerful images. They are achingly, hauntingly beautiful; and they perfectly capture the spirit of the first paintings and the first painter.

I expect to see this book on many award lists. Thank you, Kathryn Lasky, Rocco Baviera, Melanie Kroupa, & Chris Hammill Paul (DK Ink)--what a gift you have given the world!

Not only this is the best DSP book I have used , but also the
best written engineering book I have experienced in my career. Subjects are presented clearly and the author prepares you well for the next lesson. I have been able to acquire the DSP knowledge I wanted in a few weeks and without any professors.
Strum and Kirk are both great educators.

4 out of 5 stars OK, but lacks depth.......2003-11-08

I came across this in a "signals & systems" course that was intentionally being kept gentle. This book worked well enough, for students who didn't need real analog analysis.

Despite its title, this is a more of a "First Course" in discrete signals and systems. It does not, in fact, derive much at all from first principles. The Nyquist sampling theorem, for example, not proven but taken as a premise.

If you want a quick view (or review) of digital signals and filter design without having to plod through proofs knee-deep, this might work for you - it works for me. It is not a title for the most serious student, though.

4 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to DSP.......2000-11-22

This is one of the best DSP books on the market today. As the title "First principles of ..." indicates the focus of the book is on fundamentals, it is designed for the beginning student and the authors provide many, many clear examples and illustrations to guide the student through the material from discrete systems to more advanced signal processing algorithms.

If you are the unfortunate victim of a course being taught with Oppenheim and Schafer's muddled text do yourself a favor and get this book as a supplement. It is complete with solved problems, questions with answers (to selected problems), it provides a necessary degree of mathematical rigor without becoming tedious and presents general numerical algorithms for solving major signal processing problems.

I took a DSP course from the principal author while he was compiling the notes for this text (and eagerly awaited the publication of his book) and I must say the result is excellent (so was his course) and very highly recommended.

One unfortunate attribute is the poor quality of this book's construction and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I purchased the book 10 years ago and the pages have yellowed very badly and the binding broke almost immediately. Although Addison-Wesley generally produces a superior quality book this one's binding is more like a typical Prentice Hall cheapo.

                                              Book Description

Cyberprotest is an exploration of contemporary radical Internet activism in Britain, specifically the context, tensions and outcomes of environmentalists' use of the Internet. Examining a wide variety of groups--from radical direct action protesters to the political lobbying of Friends of the Earth--it allows activists to relate their experiences and the workings of frontline activism. Internet use in all the stages of activism--from long running campaigns to short term intense tactics--is analyzed.
