In this work it is argued that legal justification can best be studied from a procedural, dialogical point of view: legal statements are justified if the audience is convinced in an argumentative dialog. The formalized and implemented model DiaLaw guards the procedure in which two players aim at justifying statements. DiaLaw shows the advances and problems linked to procedural models of legal justification. Moreover, an instructive discussion of the different models of procedural justification is provided. It is stressed that in legal justification not only logically compelling arguments should be considered, but also convincing arguments. Therefore DiaLaw also deals with the rhetorical, psychological aspects of argument. This book is relevant for scholars in legal theory, artificial intelligence, and argumentation, and can be used in graduate courses on AI and Law, and legal argumentation.

I found Ice Island to be a thoroughly enjoyable book. In a clear and straightforward style that will appeal to most types of readers, the author tells the story of his ambitious scientific expedition to Antarctica in 2001 to find and study what satellite images had revealed to be the world's largest iceberg.

The adventure unfolds aboard a small, 118-foot research vessel fully packed with enough equipment for an 18-member expedition team, lots of food and fuel, and one helicopter. Facing extreme conditions and a multitude of risks without a safety net, the expedition travels from Lyttelton, New Zealand and crosses thousands of miles of the world's roughest seas to reach a desolate, rarely visited region of Antarctica. Here, floating in the offshore waters of the Ross Sea, they find the enormous icebergs they had been seeking, and conduct their research into an area that could hold important clues on the impact of modern day global warming. In an extraordinary anomaly these huge icebergs originally began separating from the Ross Ice Shelf in early 2000 as a single piece of ice nearly the size of Texas.

With this scientific journey as the backdrop, the author weaves into the book a surprisingly well-rounded assortment of interesting facts, insights and personal observations concerning both his own experiences during the trip and about Antarctica in general. Subjects discussed range from the regions bird and animal life, marine science, oceanography, natural history, ice diving, and global warming all the way to a short history of Antarctic exploration. Not surprisingly, the author also touches upon the trials and tribulations of living and working for over three months in tight quarters with 18 others - often under harsh, dangerous, and unpredictable conditions. His descriptions and photographs of ice diving, flying, and boating in some of the worlds coldest, dangerous, and most remote waters is breathtaking.

Appearing on every page of Ice Island are colorful and engaging photographs taken throughout the journey. Unique viewpoints are captured from every possible angle, both above and well below the surface of the water, from the air, and even from inside the icebergs. My favorites are the striking images of brilliantly white polar ice sculpted over many years by the forces of nature and standing in such stark contrast to the deep blue of the ocean's water. Also well photographed are the few remarkable marine animals, birds and plants hardy enough to inhabit this bitterly cold and constantly wind and water swept environment.

These spectacular photographs document the science and true adventure of this expedition while unveiling a polar world of extreme beauty that few of us will ever be lucky enough to experience first hand. As a photo-essay on Antarctica these pictures could easily stand-alone and be worthy of being published as a "coffee table" style of picture book.

Devoting the last few chapters to an overview of how global warming is profoundly affecting the Antarctic region as well as the rest of the world's oceans, Ice Island ends with a strong conservation message and the paramount importance of protecting this fragile polar eco-system.

Ice Island's greatest appeal is that it can be appreciated on so many different levels. The author does a great job of organizing all of the books' many diverse elements into a cohesive and well-communicated whole and for anyone interested in these topics I strongly recommend this book.

Nice History of the Philosophy of Space .......2004-11-27

Here is a nice Historical overview of where the current discourse has developed from. It would have been helpful to include this work with one on time, but the treatment of space as a stand alone subject was well done. This is a good place to begin one's study into the problems surrounding space and time.

The reviewers before me are of scholars, I am still a graduate student and read this book as a part of a philosophy course material about space and time.

I find that the texts in the book are well chosen and the commentaries are very helpful.

I recommend this book for students and laymen starting their way in the philosophy world.

Concept of Space.......2001-07-29

This is a very fine introductory book about the concept of Space from Zeno to Einstein through Aristo, Descartes, Kant. Author, for each segment provides relevant short readings from the original thinkers and a commentary section by him follows. This is a nice book to read before or paralel with Jammer's book on same topic. Author made a difficult subject very easy to understand.

Great voice, great stories.......2002-08-09

This audiobook contains classic horror/suspense stories from some of the best, most notably, Edgar Allan Poe. Geraint Wyn Davies does not just read the stories, he becomes the characters. His oration brings each story to life and his marvelous Welsh-Canadian accent is used to fullest potential to give life to these creepy tales. I listened to these tapes before bed, while getting ready for work and while driving long distances and they were entertaining and spooky every time. These were my first audiobooks and, with orators like Mr. Wyn Davies, they most certainly will not be the last!

Classically Trained Makes a Difference.......2000-08-04

Davies' classical experience shows in his television work ("Forever Knight") and is put to even greater use in this audiobook. His command of voice and atmosphere paints gothic pictures of Roderick Usher's doomed House or the living and dead occupants of Barwyke Hall (a little known work by J. Sheridan Le Fenu entitled "Dickon the Devil"). This audiobook must be listened to in the dark. It may be useful in literature or performance classes as well, for the authors of the literature (Ambrose Bierce, Robert Louis Stevenson, Washington Irving and others)are without doubt some of the best and never lose their seductive darkness; and Davies' rich, passioned vocal work serves as an excellent guide for students to study. For more "mundane" purposes, the stories are brisk, chilly, and altogether creepy. Those of you who already own audio copies of "Usher" and similar works ought to check this out just for comparisons' sake; Davies does an excellent job.

Amazing collection of short stories. I bought it approximately 2 yrs ago, and I continue to open it on a monthly (if not weekly) basis to re-read some of the most amazing literature ever written for inspiration.
