It was informative, helpful, and interesting all in one........1998-04-29
What I enjoyed the most about this book(besides the fact that its well written) is the "real" people, and real subjects it touches. Being a latino myself, I could easily relate to this book and the subjects it discusses.
Book Description
Dividends are not only a signal about a firm's prospects under asymmetric information, but they can also act as a corporate governance device to align the management's interests with those of the shareholders. Dividend Policy and Corporate Governance is the first comprehensive volume on the relationship between dividend policy and corporate governance, and examines in detail empirical studies and current theories. Reviewing the interactions between dividend policy and other corporate governance mechanisms, it compares results for the UK and the US with those for other countries such as France, Germany, and Japan, and provides new empirical evidence on corporate governance in continental Europe and its impact on dividends. Focusing on one of the main representatives of this system, Germany, it highlights major differences between the dividend policies of German firms and those of UK or US firms. Conventional wisdom states that German dividends are lower than UK or US dividends, yet on a published-profits basis the exact converse is true. In addition, the authors demonstrate a link between corporate control structures and dividend payouts, report evidence that the existence of a loss is an additional determinant of dividend changes, and demonstrate that the tax status of the controlling shareholder and the firm's dividend payout are not linked. The conclusions reached in this book have important implications for the current debate on corporate governance, making it invaluable for academics, finance professionals, regulators, and legal advisors.

Description:
In a sample of 365 firms from 19 countries, I show that firms with stronger corporate governance have higher dividend payouts, consistent with agency models of dividends. In addition, the negative relationship between dividend payouts and growth opportunities is stronger among firms with better governance. I also show that firms with stronger governance are more profitable, but that greater profitability explains only part of the higher dividend payouts. The positive relationship between corporate governance and dividend payouts is limited primarily to countries with strong investor protection, suggesting that firm-level corporate governance and country-level investor protection are complements rather than substitutes.

Description:
We analyze a sample of 412 publicly listed Hong Kong firms during 1995-1998 in order to answer three questions. Does concentrated family ownership affect firm operating performance and value? Does it affect dividend policy? What is the impact of corporate governance on performance, value, and dividend payouts? Our results do not show a positive relationship between family ownership and return on assets, return on equity or the market-to-book ratio. In addition, we find a negative relationship between CEO duality and performance (where CEO duality is much more likely in family-controlled firms). We also find little relationship between family ownership and dividend policy. Only for small firms there is a significant negative relationship between dividend payouts and family ownership up to 10% of the company's stock and a positive relationship for family ownership between 10 and 35%. Dividend payouts in small firms also show little sensitivity to performance. Finally, the composition of the board of directors (proportion of independent non-executive directors, outsider-dominated board, presence of audit committees) has little impact on firm performance and dividend policy, particularly for small market capitalization firms. Our results for Hong Kong are in line with both Demsetz and Lehn (1985) [Demsetz, H., Lehn, K., 1985. The structure of corporate ownership: causes and consequences. Journal of Political Economy 93, 1155-1177] and Himmelberg et al. (1999) [Himmelberg, C.P., Hubbard, R.G., Palia, D., 1999. Understanding the determinants of managerial ownership and the link between ownership and performance. Journal of Financial Economics 53. 353-384], who show that concentrated ownership is not associated with better operating performance or higher firm valuation.

Description:
Dividends of German firms are often perceived to be more flexible than those of Anglo-American firms. We analyse the decision to change the dividend for 221 German firms over 1984-1993. Consistent with Lintner [Am. Econ. Rev. 46 (1956) 97], net earnings are key determinants of dividend changes. However, our findings also refine those of Lintner [Am. Econ. Rev. 46 (1956) 97] and Miller and Modigliani [J. Bus. 34 (1961) 411]. First, the occurrence of a loss is a key determinant of dividends in addition to the traditional key determinant, the level of net earnings. Second, the majority of dividend cuts or omissions are temporary. This stands in marked contrast with DeAngelo et al. [J. Finance 47 (1992) 1837] who report that US firms are more likely to reduce their dividend when earnings deteriorate on a permanent basis. Finally, we find that firms with a bank as their major shareholder are more willing to omit their dividend than firms controlled by other shareholders.

Book Description
This book explores the lives and worldviews of Indiana's southern hill-country residents during much of the 19th century. Focusing on local institutions, political, economic, and religious, it gives voice to the plain farmers of the region and reveals the world as they saw it. For them, faith in local institutions reflected a distrust of distant markets and politicians. Localism saw its expression in the Democratic Party's anti-federalist strain, in economic practices such as "safety-first" farming which focused on taking care of the family first, and in non-perfectionist Christianity. Localism was both a means of resisting changes and the basis of a worldview that helped Hoosiers of the hill country negotiate these changes.

Book Description
This edited volume summarizes recent findings of leading researchers investigating the brain systems that underlie memory. The book reviews recent progress in understanding forms of memory in animals and humans and the interaction of cortical and subcortical systems in the regulation of memory. Special emphasis is given to the development of neural network models that attempt to link cells to systems in the representation of memory. The book will be an invaluable source for cognitive psychologists, neuroscientists, and students interested in this active and exciting area of research.

A Guide to Field Philosophy.......2006-01-10
Both the content and style of Geo-Logic are worthy of praise. To begin with style: Geo-Logic is deeply interdisciplinary because the author, philosopher Robert Frodeman, wants to convey the essential point that specialized knowledge is not sufficient to our complex, modern problems. Especially concerning philosophy and other humanities, specializiation often confines knowledge production to irrelevance. Frodeman is keen to show how philsophy is relevant to environmental issues such as acid mine drainage (and global climate change). As he says, the very nature of these issues drive us, even against our will, to consider metaphysical, aesthetic, and theological points about the proper human place in the natural order.
It is here that style overlaps with content: Frodeman's main message is that "we are not making good use of our intellectual resources, in large part because the disciplinary presumptions that dominate the production of knowledge today" (p. 16). Frodeman sees in field science, especially geology practiced in the field, a model of "scientific reasoning" more applicable to the challenging, uncertain context of environmental policymaking. In the age of google, we may need to re-think the way we think -- to re-think the way we produce knowledge and connect it to action. Frodeman offers the idea of topical thinking, where thought follows "a nomadic path that traces the implicit logic of a problem wherever it leads" (p. 12).
Geo-logic is much more than a philosophical treatise on the epistemology of field science. It is a field guide to the terrain of the modern knowledge society and the new issues cropping up there like rock formations on the policy-scape. As we face ever more complex problems, we tend to scientize them and plug away at mathematical models, hoping that a scientific definition of a problem can lead to a technical fix. This often works, but increasingly this method is beginning to look like the drunkard looking for his keys under the streetlamp of science, because it is easiest for us to see there. Geo-logic raises the uncomfortable but necessary point: to confront our problems we often must have reasonable discussions about ethics and other values...discussions that have become all too subjectivized in modern society.
Frodeman provides a field guide, not to any particular problem, but to the matrix within which we scientize our problem definitions. What, then, is pertinent knowledge in our quest for the good life? How do we produce it? When do we have too much knowledge? This book has much to offer scientists, policy analysts, and philosophers...as well as anyone interested in the way environmental problems are framed and the practical and philosophical consequences therein.

Conceptual Physics, Ninth Edition Media Update shows how a compelling book and innovative media can be integrated to bring physics to life for readers. Hewitt's book engages readers with analogies and imagery from real-world situations to build a strong conceptual understanding of physical principles ranging from classical mechanics to modern physics. With this strong foundation, readers are better equipped to understand the equations and formulas of physics, and motivated to explore the thought-provoking exercises and fun projects in each chapter. Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat, Sound, Electricity and Magnetism, Light, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Relativity. For college instructors and students, or anyone interested in issues relating to conceptual physics.
Customer Reviews:
Not conceptual.......2007-09-04
My daughter used this textbook in her HS physics class and I was apalled with how much useless information it contained. Little to no historical information about who, what and when it was discovered and how it brought about changed. Her teacher used the chapter on the conservation of energy to talk about energy conservation, an entirely different subject. I agree with teaching the concepts of physics in HS before diving into the math in college, but there are much better texts available!
Not what they stated.......2007-05-19
Well, they made it seem like this is the paperback version of the hardcover. It is NOT.
This is an EXERCISE BOOK and no such description exists.
Be careful when purchasing. The only version of the book itself is the hardback version costing over a hundred bucks.
Incredible textbook.......2007-02-04
Going into intro physics this semester, my boyfriend (who had aced his physics course no problem) was utterly ready to hold my hand through the ordeal. But a good instructor and this very comprehensible text makes everything quite easy to understand. Highly recommended to anyone wanting a firm grasp of physics.
Very useful book for those who would like to learn physics without equations.......2006-12-30
I used Conceptual Physics by Paul G. Hewitt along with a more technical university-level introductory physics book that had a lot of equations but not much conceptual explanation. I should admit that I was not very fond of physics until I started to read this book. It explained physical concepts in a simple language that was easy to understand. Although it did not cover some of the more complicated physical concept, it did cover enough material so that I could understand most of the physics equations in my other more technical physics book much better. Conceptual Physics was even exciting to read and I usually looked forward to doing so. After finishing this book, because I understood physical concepts much better, I started to read other popular physics books. Conceptual Physics is not intended to be used in a course that requires solving physics problems based on understanding equation. So it should not be used as such unless it is accompanied by another book containing equations. But if you would like to learn conceptual physics without equation, it has a tremendous value.
This book helped me learn to hate physics.......2006-12-11
As a college student forced to endure this book for an entire semester of conceptual physics, I can say with utmost certainty that this book should not be be on any teacher's list of useful text books. I chose physics to fulfill my university math requirement in order to broaden my very basic scientific knowledge, as I had never taken a physics course. However, what I found in this book (which constituted the bulk of my instruction) was a conglomeration of random examples with little cohesion, annoying illustrations that were distracting rather than helpful, badly organized chapters that left me wandering through the pages wondering what had happened, and an index that doesn't include standard items such as "static friction" or "watt". Perhaps most frustrating was the appalling lack of mathematical equations that the student is somehow supposed to magically know by the end of the chapter, when they are necessary to solve the problems. Please, if you are a physics instructor, spare your students the agony of trying to grasp an understanding of your subject through this book.
