AN EXCELLENT INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL.......2001-03-15
This instructor's guide written by Carol Imai is an exemplary manual for career preparation instructors and trainers. It uses a wide array of tools, including course outlines, student exercises, group activities and lesson plans, to assist the career professional in developing a meaningful course. In addition, this guide is the ideal compliment to the student handbook as well as the text. It provides the new instructor or the seasoned professional with a wide variety of excellent options. I strongly recommend this book to committed teachers.
Book Description
Short listed for the Kulp-Wright Book Award for the most significant text in the field of risk management and insurance
Provides a consistent firm-wide platform for pricing, hedging and risk management of credit across a broad range of product classes.

Examines loans, credit derivatives, interest rate derivatives with risky conterparties and convertible bonds.
Provides a thorough analysis of the pricing and hedging of basket credit derivatives and other credit contingent products.
Adapts credit derivative modelling techniques in order to price and hedge the credit component in fixed income derivatives.
It provides a practical discussion of market frictions that impact credit trading.
Complex theoretical issues are illustrated with an unusually high number of examples, tables and figures that have been designed with the practitioner in mind.
It is self-sufficient. Proofs and technicalities are discussed in the appendices of each chapter.
It has both an appendix of 6 papers and is followed by a glossary.
Customer Reviews:
Credit Risk not Trading Risk.......2007-07-26
The authors cover Credit Risk, not Credit Trading Risk as the title might suggest. Once you get past that, the book is actually not bad. However, there are better books on this topic.
Their presentation has some flow issue where you have to read the section more than once to really understand their point. Also, too many pages devoted to appendix. What they do overall a good job of is to bring pricing and hedging aspects of credit risk into one place.
Too many typos - detail not bad at intermediate level........2004-11-16
This should probably be a 2.5 star rating but they don't allow non-integer ratings. Basically, while the conceptual material regarding hedging of credit derivatives is quite good, there are far too many typo's throughout the book - often where a perhaps less experienced reader will not pick them up (both in text and formulae). Also, while there is a wealth of material concerning basic and intermediate practical issues, the detail peters out just when the most practical issues are raised - such as delta hedging of credit derivatives by maturity buckets rather than with a single maturity CDS. Still, I did find elements of it useful and some concepts that I had not come across before.
Good topics, lousy writing.......2004-03-09
The topics covered in this book are very good. However, the writing is really lousy. One can get a headache from reading this book.
Can anyone understand what a "percentile" is from this book?
A practioners view of credit derivaties.......2001-11-23
As a trader working in the Synthetic Arbitrage area I find this book an in valuable resource. The book covers credit concepts and institutional details like how to calculate economic capital etc. to intersting ways of constructing the credit curve to how one price different instruments on it and the different no arb relationships of different instruments. I found the chapers on hedging baskets and derivative credit risk to be very interesting and well written. The chapter on converts was a bit light. But on the whole this book is a must have for a Trader in this area of bleeding edge finance.
Much needed book on credit.......2001-09-27
Arvanitis and Gregory have written an excellent overview of modelling credit risk. The book is written in an intuitive and semi-technical style and the ideas are highlighted with numerous examples. It is therefore applicable to both managers wanting an overview of credit modelling techniques and quants who want more technical details on pricing models. Opening chapters cover credit risk models and describe the standard approaches, such as CreditMetrics. The computation of the loss distribution is discussed and the authors illustrate the importance of modelling the potential credit exposure of derivatives. Default correlation, credit migration and recovery rate modelling are also discussed. Monte Carlo simulation with variance reduction and quasi-Monte Carlo techniques is relied upon heavily. Later chapters include an excellent treatment of credit derivative pricing, a theoretical discussion of how to price derivative counterparty risk and a discussion of credit risk in convertible bonds. The final chapter discusses some related issues such as the discrete hedging problem and market imperfections.
The book is broad in its product coverage with the right amount of technical depth. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in credit risk or credit derivatives.

Book Description
Approaches to the relation of law and society have for a long time seen law as either autonomous or self-grounded in society. This book is a radically new approach that sees law as both derived from and constitutive of its surrounding social and cultural context. Drawing on the work of major theorists, this book examines the nature of law as it has descended from the Enlightenment, through to colonialism and now globalization. It is a significant contribution to legal philosophy, jurisprudence and socio-legal studies.

Book Description
Modernism in legal theory is no different from modernism in the arts: both respond to a cultural crisis, a sense that institutions and traditions have lost their validity. Some doubt the importance of the rule of law, others question the objectivity of legal reasoning. We have lost confidence in the justice of our legal institutions, and even in our very capacity to identify justice.
Legal philosopher David Luban argues that we cannot escape the modernist predicament. Accusing contemporary legal theorists of evading rather than confronting the challenge of modernity, he offers important and original objections to pragmatism, traditionalism, and nihilism. He argues that only by weaving together the broken narrative and forgotten voices of history's victims can we come to appreciate the nature of justice in modern society. Calling a trial the embodiment of the law's self-criticism, Luban demonstrates the centrality of narrative by analyzing the trial of Martin Luther King, the Nuremberg trials, and trial scenes in Homer, Hesiod, and Aeschylus. With these examples, Luban explores several of the tensions that motivate much more contemporary legal theory: order versus justice, obedience versus resistance, statism versus communitarianism.
". . . an illuminating account of how contemporary legal theory can be understood as an expression of 'the modernist predicament' by exploring the analogy between modernism in the arts and modernism in law, politics, and philosophy. . . . a valuable critical discussion of modern legal theory." --Choice
David Luban is Morton and Sophia Macht Professor of Law at the University of Maryland and Research Scholar at the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy. His other books include Lawyers and Justice: An Ethical Study.

Book Description
This book analyzes the transition of Russia's agro-food sector from a centrally planned system to a market-oriented one. The chapters set out to explain the initial conditions of transition, describe the measures undertaken, survey the current situation, and offer perspectives on how best to continue with the reform. Hence, the book not only provides insights into Russia's food economy, it also gives very valuable information about the process of transition and the question: What next? Within the Russian context, the food economy is of special importance, due to the relatively high share it represents in the economy and its importance for employment. Furthermore, the privatization and the restructuring of the country's agro-food sector is one of the most controversial issues in the ongoing domestic political debate about the reform process. Russia is also important in that its reintegration into the world economy is at stake. Russia's Agro-Food Sector: Towards Truly Functioning Markets should increase the understanding of the issues causing the cumbersome implementation of reform measures and, in so doing, might provide scholars and policymakers with advice on how to improve the transition process. In fact, one of the most important lessons from the book is that markets will continue to malfunction as long as institutions are not functioning properly.

High Energy Cosmic Rays (Springer Praxis Books / Astronomy and Planetary Sciences)
ASIN: 0813342120 |
Book Description
Cosmic ray physics has recently attracted a great deal of attention from the high energy physics community because of the discovery of new sources and the advent of new techniques. The result of a series of lectures prepared for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, this book is a general introduction to experimental techniques and results in the field of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. It succinctly summarizes the rapidly developing field, and provides modern results that include data from newer detectors. Combining experiment and theory, the text explores the results of a single, easy-to-understand experiment to tie together various issues involved in the physics of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays.

Obsolete.......2006-12-16
This book was published in 1988. While it is called a Rev Ed 2004, the numerous references in it are all to papers before 1988, some of which are referred to as recent. There is no indication that any change has been made to bring the book up to date.
I gave it the lowest possible rating not as a criticism of the work itself. As far as I can tell, and I am not well qualified to judge it, this was a fine and informative book in its day. What I am unhappy about is that whoever put Rev Ed 2004 gives the impression the book was brought up to date in 2004 when it was not. This is a subject which was developing rapidly when the book was written and with additional satellites and high energy theories it has no doubt continued to develop since then.

Review of English Translation.......2000-02-22
This book has been translated into English, but I don't think that he translates as best as he could. He translates into modern/slang English, and not the English that would French would directly translate to. If you would like to get a general gist of Chrétien de Troyes' book, then this translation would be the best to read. Unfortunately, the lines of this book are only in English; there is no Old French to compare his English to. That does make it harder to read if you're into die-hard French Translation. For the average reader, this book would be a good buy.
Book Description
Ever since that tragic night when her mother and guardian were murdered, thirteen-year-old Sarah has been living on her own and searching for the knight who was responsible. Her quest for revenge leads to an even greater adventure when she witnesses Queen Guinevere being kidnapped. Soon Sarah finds herself accompanying Sir Gawain and Squire Terence on a remarkable journey to rescue the Queen. In their travels they meet, among others, a mystery knight traveling incognito in a dung cart, a faery who becomes Sarah's first friend in a long time, a reclusive monk who plans to spend the rest of his life building a tomb for Sir Lancelot, and a princess who might have a little more gumption than she appears to. As the plot thickens, Sarah finds out more about the people she's met and befriended, as well as about herself. She begins to learn the true consequences of vengeance and what it really means to be a princess.
Customer Reviews:
We fight over who gets to read the next one in the series first!.......2007-04-03
After reading one book by author Gerald Morris, we were addicted! Now my husband (43), my son (12), and myself (37) are fighting over every book in the Squire's Tales series that we can get our hands on! We bought this book because we heard it was "good literature." We had no idea HOW good until we read it. It is clever, witty, sarcastic, adventurous, and inspirational! My husband laughed so hard he cried! It is a very entertaining retelling of the King Arthur stories and Canterbury Tales, complete with knights, castles, princesses, magic, fairies, herbs with healing powers, and quests! The characters as sassy and full of spunk, and there is a new adventure around every corner. We recommended these books to our local library, some of the librarians read one of the books, and they ended up ordering a bunch of the books from The Squire's Tales series for the library. (This book is the sixth in the series.) It is easy to recommend such a charming and entertaining book!
Yet ANOTHER Book to Get Lost In!!! jmeascsKeinnon.......2007-01-01
The Princess, the Crone, and the Dung-Cart Knight is a GREAT book!
In this story the heroine, Sarah, is an orphan. Being the only witness of Queen Guinevere's abduction, she sets off to Camelot to tell King Arthur about his wife. Soon she finds herself on quest with Gawain and his Squire, Terence, both to rescue the queen and a secret quest of her own.
Filled with the usual assembly of recreant knights, "holy men", and other hilarious characters, this book has kept me turning pages till the very end. My favorite character is King Bagdemagus, a very, very silly man who is always in the latest fashion; whether it's a brilliant green silk robe or torn up shepherd's clothes!!!
In conclusion, The Squire, His Knight, and His Lady is something I think everyone should read and enjoy. So, if you like ADVENTURE, ARTHURIAN TALES, KNIGHTS, Sir LANCELOT, SWORD FIGHTS AND MAGIC, this is the book for you!!!
an EXCELLENT ADVENTURE book by XMMO.......2006-12-28
This is a great book! It's not as funny as THE SQUIRE'S TALE, but it's more adventure. You see, Sarah witnesses the Queen and Sir Kai's obduction, and she goes for help. Soon she finds herself accompanied by the famous Sir Gawain, his squire, Terence, and searching for the queen and kai. But Sarah's also on a quest of her own, with only a mysterious old crone to help her. This book is filled with ACTION, ADVENTURE, KNIGHTS, ENCHANTMENTS, SUSPENSE, MAGIC, OTHER-WORLDLY-BEINGS, all on a MEDIEVAL back ground! This really is a great read!
Stephanie's Review.......2006-02-10
Good book, weird title. A girl named Sarah lived with her mother and Mordecai until a knight came with the village and killed them. Sarah has to survive on her own stealing food from the village, and an old woman, who leaves food for her. Sarah wants to get revenge from the knight, and sees one that might be him, or would lead her to him, along with a lady. She follows him and tries to steal his sword when he sits down, but he grabs her, and throws her to the middle of the clearing. She apoligises, and they offer to eat lunch with her. While she's fetching water for the horses, another knight comes, and kidnaps both of them. The knight that she met first hints to Sarah to go and tell King Arther, and that the lady is Queen Guinivere. The old lady who left out food for her told her how to get to Camelot. When she finally gets there, Arther sends a search party, and they plan to drop off Sarah on their way to find the knight, and the Queen, but things didn't go as planned.
Not quite up to standard.......2005-08-24
Although I absolutely love all of Gerald Morris's books so far, this one was probably my least favorite. I'm not quite sure why, since it had most of our old favorite characters like Terence and Sir Gawain. But I guess I thought Sarah wasn't a great main character. She was just a little too annoying at times. And also, there wasn't quite as much humor in this book as in the previous ones. Definitely no romance, if you're interested in that sort of thing. Anyway, it was still very good and definitely worth reading, especially for fans.

Book Description
From the moment he caught sight of her, he did not turn or take his eyes and face from her, defending himself with backhand blows. And Meleagant meanwhile attacked him as fiercely as he could, delighted to think that the other cannot withstand him now; and they of the country are well pleased too, while the foreigners are so distressed that they can no longer support themselves.

Customer Reviews:
the beginning of the most famous love triangle in Western history.......2005-08-11
This is a fascinating epic, meticulously translated and annotated by Cline. It seems to be amazing how much you can learn about some of the most cherished tropes in Arthurian legend by reading this, but this is ultimately unsurprising as The Knight of the Cart was the original source of the Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot love triangle. It is packed with magical imagery, dark humour, and, of course, fatal flaws. I wish I could read Old French so that I could have a better familiarity with the original text!
