A Great Book for Youth.......2007-03-11

Include this book in an Easter basket or give it to a friend. I was given this book to me as a kid and discovered that it had answers to questions that I had, not to mention it really got me interested in science. The whole purpose of the book is to simply answer 100 random questions about weather such as:

What gives a snowflake its shape?
What is solar wind?
What weather events are predicted at the end times?

The book is enjoyable as you can skip around to read the questions you choose to first, and has some great references for further study, including Biblical verses to back up the information that the author portrays.

Pretentious book.......2006-12-31

This book attempts to cover the amount of theory that would require a shelf of books to cover adequately. As a result, it basically only gives the definitions and results (theorems without proofs) in each topic, something that one could get for free from online encyclopedias. There are problems with partial solutions, but they are not problems that a student who is exposed to the topics for the first time can solve. Since there are no proofs of theorems or examples, one cannot solve those problems from studying from this book alone, so why even put those problems in?

To me this seems like a book that the author wrote to summarize the author's knowledge (if the author has really indeed memorized this plethora of information???), while there is no way of understanding what the topics are about if you are reading the topics for the very first time. To master all the topics in this book would require years of serious studying, so you are better off buy books that specialize in these topics.

Not a good buy at all........2005-03-25

Why did I by this book?
Because I gave a look at the first pages using the "view inside" option. The first pages seemed great and in the index there was a big chapter on string theory. I thought: "ok, great, it seems I've found one more book covering string theory. If the formalism is the same as in introduction it it a good book to have to add to GSW and Polchinski". The formalism is not the same. If fact each chapter seems to be disconnected to the others. And last but not the least: the last chapter is a copy/paste version, really copy/paste version, of green, schwartz, witten. Even the images are the same! How could it be connected to the previous chapters... And the author dares to say in the intro: "this book grew from the author's conviction...". No. At least the last chapter, it grew from copying another book. And that is not mentioned in the intro when the chapter is introduced. Only in the awknoledgments schwartz is cited among many others. In the string theory chapter where everything is copied from GSW the green book is not even cited! I was never so escandalised in my live. At least never in a matter related to physics.

One of the best books to teach you formal particle physics and related topics........2004-08-30

This is indeed one of the excellent books you can buy to learn formal particle physics and advanced mathematical methods used in theoretical high energy physics papers. It does not assume more than undergraduate background both in math and physics. The only missing thing in it is that it does not cover any serious material related to supergravity or grand unified theories, otherwise it's complete. Don't hesitate to buy it.

Might be good for a reference..........2004-06-14

Probably the most bloated book I've ever encountered. It seems like this isn't targeted for computer science students. It was completely impossible to read it without falling asleep, because the book could go on and on for pages without presenting anything new except that 1+1=2.

The best source for learning about tabu search would be to read a basic book about (combinatorial) optimization just to teach the vocabulary (like an exact neighborhood etc.). After that, just head to springerlink and download a few articles from the Lectures in Computer Science-series or use some other source for papers relating to applications of tabu search to various optimization problems.

This book is quite good for a reference though.

Great book but too expensive.......1999-04-21

It's good to read the book that the writer and inventor of theory are the same person. Glover and Laguna conduct this book in a self-comprehensive book. I've never found any good resource of Tabu Search as great as this book. Only drawback is the price... too expensive for student. I only read it in the library though. I'm glad to know they have the paperback edition but I'm not sure about the quality of printing. Lastly, get it whenver you can afford it!. It's worth your money every characters.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: We apply a Reactive Tabu Search (RTS) heuristic within a discrete event simulation to solve routing problems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Our formulation represents this problem as a multiple Traveling Salesman Problem with time windows (mTSPTW), with the objective of attaining a specified level of target coverage using a minimum number of vehicles. Incorporating weather and probability of UAV survival at each target as random inputs, the RTS heuristic in the simulation searches for the best solution in each realization of the problem scenario in order to identify those routes that are robust to variations in weather, threat, or target service times. Generalizing this approach as Embedded Optimization (EO), we define EO as a characteristic of a discrete event simulation model that contains optimization or heuristic procedures that can affect the state of the system. The RTS algorithm in the UAV simulation demonstrates the utility of EO by determining the necessary fleet size for an operationally representative scenario. From our observation of robust routes, we suggest a methodology for using robust tours as initial solutions in subsequent replications. We present an object oriented implementation of this approach using MODSIM III, and show how mapping object inheritance to the GVRP hierarchy allows for minimal adjustments from previously written objects when creating new types. Finally, we use EO to conduct an analysis of fleet size requirements within an operationally representative scenario.

Such problems include job scheduling, assembly line balancing, process layout, project scheduling, and facilities locations. Although optimal solutions are preferable, the combinatorial nature of these problems means that in many cases problems found in practical applications cannot be solved to optimality within reasonable resources. In these cases, operations managers turns to heuristics. Since the early 1980s, much interest has been devoted to the development and application of three general heuristic algorithms: tabu search, simulated annealing, and genetic algorithms. Each of them specifies a strategy for searching the solution space of a problem looking for "good" local optima. From a practical point of view, we would like to know if any of these methods is indeed better than the other two. In this research study we conduct an empirical comparison of these three heuristic algorithms using three variants of the facilities location problem: capacitated (CFLP), multiple-periods (MP-FLP), and multiple-commodities (MC-FLP). The selection of three different problem structures allowed us to explore the behavior of the heuristics under different circumstances and constraints. Furthermore, none of the heuristics have been previously applied to these problems.

The TSP is a very important problem for the operations research academician and practitioner. This research demonstrates a Group Theoretic Tabu Search (GTTS) Java algorithm for the TSP. The tabu search metaheuristic continuously finds near-optimal solutions to the TSP under various different implementations. Algebraic group theory offers a more formal mathematical setting to study the TSP providing a theoretical foundation for describing tabu search. Specifically, this thesis uses the Symmetric Group on n letters, S(n), which is the set of all n! permutations on n letters whose binary operation is permutation multiplication, to describe the TSP solution space. Thus, the TSP is studied as a permutation problem rather than an integer program by applying the principles of group theory to define the tabu search move and neighborhood structure. The group theoretic concept of conjugation (an operation involving two group elements) simplifies the move definition as well as the intensification and diversification strategies. Conjugation in GTTS diversifies the search by allowing large rearrangement moves within a tour in a single move operation. Empirical results are presented along with the theoretical motivations for the research.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In this research, we provide a new meta-heuristic, a jump search I tabu search hybrid, for addressing the vehicle routing problem with real-life constraints. A tour construction heuristic creates candidate solutions or jump points for the problem. A tabu search algorithm uses these jump points as starting points for a guided local search. We provide statistical analysis on the performance of our algorithm and compare it to other published algorithms. Our algorithm provides solutions within 10% of the best known solutions to benchmark problems and does so in a fraction of the time required by competing algorithms. The timeliness of the solution is vitally import to the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) routing problem. UAVs provide the lion's share of reconnaissance support for the US military. This reconnaissance mission requires the UAVs to visit hundreds of target areas in a rapidly changing combat environment. Air vehicle operators (AVOs) must prepare a viable mission plan for the UAVs while contending with such real-life constraints as time windows, target priorities, multiple depots, heterogeneous vehicle fleet, and pop-up threats. Our algorithm provides the AVOs with the tools to perform their mission quickly and efficiently.
