Book Description
Classic Strategies for Unapologetic Winners
“It” is a strategy so powerful and an execution-driven mind-set so relentless that companies use it to gain more than just competitive advantage ¿ they achieve an industry dominance that is virtually unassailable and that competitors often try to explain away as unfair. In their “hardball manifesto,” authors George Stalk and Rob Lachenauer of the leading strategy consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group show how hardball competitors can build or maintain an enviable competitive edge by pursuing one or more of the classic “hardball strategies”: unleash massive and overwhelming force, exploit anomalies, devastate profit sanctuaries, raise competitors’ costs, and break compromises.
Based on twenty-five years of experience advising and observing a range of companies, the authors argue that hardball competitors can gain extreme competitive advantage ¿ neutralizing, marginalizing, or even destroying competitors ¿ without violating their contracts with customers or employees, and without breaking the rules. A clear-eyed paean to the timeless strategies that have driven the world’s winning companies, Hardball Strategy redefines and reinterprets the meaning of competition for a new generation of business players.

Great Strategy for Business.......2007-08-04
John Steinbeck, the great writer, once said that "The things we admire in men, generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of FAILURE in our system. And those that we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest are the traits of SUCCESS. And while men admire the quality of the first, they love the produce of the second". Well, this book is exactly that. It speaks to the exact words that the great John Steinbeck mentioned so many years ago. If you want to succeed in business, a certain amount of Hardball must be in your quiver of arrows.
Machiavellian Hardball.......2007-06-19
"Hardball" is about doing what's in your best interest according to the conditions of the situation. "Hardball" is a metaphor for playing in the big leagues with a "winner take all" philosophy. What's excellent about the book is while taking a Machiavellian approach to doing what is necessary for the situation, it does not advocate bloodletting for the sake of shedding blood. If anything, it warns against it. A wounded animal could be at its most dangerous. But, like Machiavelli's, The Prince, one could assert that if your opponent declares war on you, all means for winning should be at your disposal. An excellent book to read in conjunction with "Monopoly Rules: How to Find, Capture and Control the Most Lucrative Markets In Any Business, by Milind M. Lele."

Hardball: Are You Playing to Play or Playing to Win.......2006-11-04
The authors clearly believe in what they've written and have seen many times the characteristics they describe, as shown by the very good use of examples and anecdotes. The authors have an inspirational tone, sometimes a little too much so. The book has a little too much of that inspirational feel and not quite enough depth on some topics. Ultimately, the treatment is a little thin although the book is a good read.
Inside exposition of winning strategies.......2006-08-08
Being a winner in business means acting like a winner. That requires having an aggressive mindset, not settling for second best and recognizing opportunity. Not every company or executive has the stomach to play hardball. Kicking an opponent when he's down, reneging on a compromise or having to make decisions that your managers will hate is never easy. But the business landscape is littered with the skeletons of companies that settled for "good, not great," only to be blindsided by competitors who played for keeps. Authors George Stalk and Rob Lachenauer clearly believe that "nice guy" and "business leader" live in different worlds and although some of their "hardball" tactics aren't all that tough or fresh, some clearly are. They say you have two basic choices: be the predator or the prey. We recommend this book to those who want to be the boss beast in that jungle out there.
Thought provoking 80s business mindset.......2006-07-26
I picked this book up as part of a package for attending a speech by Mr. Stalk who is VP at the influential Boston Consulting Group. More so than his book, his speech was jaw dropping, hard-line, 80's corporate raider stuff... all based on a core principle that makes sense, businesses have a primary objective of meeting the needs of their customers and shareholders. Beyond this simple concept, everything else is good will to the community.
This ongoing principle was easy for me to accept and I have to say I reflected on some of my opinions of different businesses (WalMart, Starbucks). That being said, the majority of this book is written to CEOs and their advisors with influence over an organization's objectives. This was where I was confused on being invited to this speaking engagement, this is subject matter that is higher up the chain than I can influence right now. However, I did take away some understanding of why corporate leadership makes the decisions they do and am tossing around how these concepts can be scaled down to the departmental level.

From the supplier: Office managers should examine the politicization of a workplace so they may develop the strategies necessary in carrying out organizational plans. Harold Laswell believes that the use of persuasion and informal authority to achieve desired ends is an important component of the business leadership process. Thomas L. Quick has identified ten sources of power that are readily available, which includes competence, position, personal power, resource, associative, assigned-delegated, reward, alliance, professional and availability.

Important Book.......2002-12-02
Someday humanity will look back on this book and wonder why its methods were not put into practice generations sooner. Better late than never. Free yourself. Become part of the solution.
Step By Step Guidebook For Monetary Change.......2002-12-02
No need to reinvent the wheel. This book explains how money works for those who already have too much and against those who are really creating the wealth. Then it shows examples of systems tried and shown to be effective in keeping the productivity in the hands of the creators and at the same time allowing the already-rich to keep their security. No guesswork necesary. A complete guide to making changes that are long overdue in this nation and hopefully on this planet. Imagine working your fair share of time and prospering while the earth has a chance to recover from merciless plunder. Don't dream it: BE it!
Boston Tea Party for Wage Slaves.......2002-12-02
If people only understood the concepts in this easy to read book, freedom would return to this land. People would be able to keep the profits from their labor. Americans who have been taught to endure hardship simply to earn a living would find that their life-energy has been stolen and would be empowered to take it back. Land would be redistributed and it would be profitable to live lightly on the earth once again. The system described in this book is tried and proven. Many communities are using its example to restore prosperity to their citizens.
Small but powerful book. Should be required reading for all high-school students. At least the next generation would taste freedom and prosperity.
No more wars or privation. Everybody wins!.......2002-05-19
Inflation is just another way of saying the government cannot pay the interest on its war debts and has to print more money to cover the payments, devaluing the federal reserve notes you earn.
Interest is a huge wealth transfering machine, from the suffering to the already obscenely wealthy.
All of America is laboring under some terrible delusions today.
And a host of evils fall upon our heads. Desperate, driven, unhappy unhealthy populations suffer to pay back imaginary money. Families suffer, society becomes unsafer, children are unloved because they have parents who have no time for them. The next generation is being trained to endure hardship, and work longer and longer hours only to give away the fruits of their labor. Minds are wasted and the wondrous inventions that they might have come up with are lost... Knowledge of life-saving and health promoting methods are repressed. Our lives have been stolen from us, and the existence were are permitted is miserable. We are walking abortions. Permitted to have our bodies, but denied our lives.
This tiny little book shows the way out. The systems in this book stimulate an economy so well that even artists flourish, and it even tends to redistribute land: the only real wealth. Towns like Utica NY have tried it and it works beautifully, And the best of it is that "the Big boys" get to keep theirs, so the system is no threat to them. In fact, instead of having to worry about their holdings being eaten by inflation, they pay only a very small holding fee (say, 2%/yr.) to the banks if they don't want to participate. Much less worry for them, too, because even their fortunes suffer from being eaten by 4-6%/yr inflation.
It is all the more imperative that we take just a few minutes to read this simple little book now, because, over the next few years, 90% of the workforce will become unnecessary (see Jeremy Rifkin, "The End OF Work"). About 350 people own as much of the world as 40% of the rest of the world population. How long do you think they will need you?
Besides, for the believers in the Bible and the Torah among us, "Woe be to him who sells money at interest, for he sells what Does Not Exist". Do you really think that God just meant to not sell money to "foreigners"? That was when he was talking to a few tribes that he had chosen to build a better world for themselves. We are all one world family now. That means you, too, if you have an interest bearing bank account, pay a mortgage, are buying a car, or use credit cards.
And even if you think you pay interest only if you borrow money, think again! There are interest costs in everything you do including paying for your trash collection.
There is an easier and better way. Margrit Kennedy explains it much more succinctly than I can write this review...

An empirical analysis .......2005-01-04
Arbitrary & Capricious: The Precautionary Principle In The European Union Courts by Gary E. Marchant (Professor of Law, Arizona State University College of Law) and Kenneth L. Mossman (Professor of Health Physics in the School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University) reveals that in some sixty judicial decisions to date, the EU courts have failed to provide a transparent and consistent meaning and application of the precautionary principle in their legal decisions affecting international environmental, health, and safety policies over the past 25 years. An empirical analysis demonstrating the EU court's arbitrary and reasonable judicial behavior as evidenced in their rulings, Arbitrary & Capricious should be mandatory reading in every International Studies course, every Free Trade policy discussion seminar's supplemental studies list, as well as for every academician, governmental official, and agency policy maker involved with America's EU trading policies.

Our Superstring Universe: Strings, Branes, Extra Dimensions and Superstring-M Theory
ASIN: 0750306726 |
Book Description
A unified theory embracing all physical phenomena is a major goal of theoretical physics. In the early 1980s, many physicists looked to eleven-dimensional supergravity in the hope that it might provide that elusive superunified theory. In 1984 supergravity was knocked off its pedestal by ten-dimensional superstrings, one-dimensional objects whose vibrational modes represent the elementary particles. Superstrings provided a perturbative finite theory of gravity which, after compactification to four spacetime dimensions, seemed in principle capable of explaining the Standard Model. Despite these major successes, however, nagging doubts persisted about superstrings. Then in 1987 and 1992 the elementary supermembrane and its dual partner, the solitonic superfivebrane, were discovered. These are supersymmetric extended objects with respectively two and five dimensions moving in an eleven-dimensional spacetime. Over the period since 1996, perturbative superstrings have been superseded by a new nonperturbative called M-theory, which describes supermembranes and superfivebranes, subsumes string theories, and has as its low-energy limit, eleven-dimensional supergravity. M-theory represents the most exciting development in the subject since 1984 when the superstring revolution first burst on the scene. The first book devoted to M-theory, The World in Eleven Dimensions: Supergravity, Supermembranes and M-Theory brings together seminal papers that have shaped our current understanding of this eleven-dimensional world, from supergravity through supermembranes to M-theory. Each chapter includes commentaries intended to explain the importance of these papers and to place them in a wider perspective. Each chapter also has an extensive bibliography. The book is of interest to researchers and postgraduate students in particle physics, mathematical physics, gravitation, and cosmology.
