Spend a few moments with this book and you will be introduced to the man who spent 17 years as CEO of Citicorp. The essays and speeches contained in this volume reveal a sharp, creative mind, dedicated to free competition of ideas.

In 1982 I sought training which amounted to helping me find a personal computer's on/off switch. Another lesson was how to insert a five-inch floppy diskette into its drive. About the same time, Wriston was eloquently declaring that money was a "just another form of information" on a computer screen waiting to find the friendliest government at the speed of light.

A passion defender against governmental encroachment, Wriston writes with grace, wit and insight. If more CEOs were this articulate, the business world would be a better place.

Civil law and common law systems are held to enforce promises differently: civil law, in principle, will enforce any promise, while common law will enforce only those with 'consideration'. In that respect, modern civil law supposedly differs from the Roman law from which it descended, where a promise was enforced depending on the type of contract the parties had made. This volume is concerned with the extent to which these characterizations are true, and how these and other differences affect the enforceability of promises. Beginning with a concise history of these distinctions, the volume then considers how twelve European legal systems would deal with fifteen concrete situations. Finally, a comparative section considers why modern legal systems enforce certain promises and not others, and what promises should be enforced. This is the second completed project of The Common Core of European Private Law launched at the University of Trento.

The activities are easy and fun. I love the pictures in this book too.

Another fun book about oceans!.......2004-07-22

Awesome Ocean Science follows in the tradition of Williamson Kids Can titles offering lots of hands on activities that are easy to follow. I found this book very similar to Oceans:An Activity Guide for Ages 6-9 by Nancy Castaldo, except it lacked the in-depth information that Castaldo presents with each activity. This may be a great starter book, but teachers may find it lacking.

A literary feast.......2005-12-20

Balzac guided European fiction away from the overriding influence of Walter Scott and the Gothic school, by showing that modern life could be recounted as vividly as Scott recounted his historical tales, and that mystery and intrigue did not need ghosts and crumbling castles for props. Maupassant, Flaubert and Zola were writers of the next generation who were directly influenced by him, and Marcel Proust (that other weaver of a great tapestry) acknowledged his influence.

He is worth reading for pleasure as well as for his influence on European literature.
