Book Description
Power, Passions, and Purpose contains twelve original essays and a joint statement by distinguished economists, political scientists, and policy-makers, aimed at exploring new directions in North-South negotiations. Combining the talents of writers from different disciplines, it provides the first substantial treatment of the current stalemate in the North-South dialog, and shows how the situation can be creatively altered.
The book addresses a political and economic disjunction that arose in the late 1970s in the world economy. By that time, it was evident that the commodity power, which had given force to the Third World's demands for global negotiations concerning the rules of the international economic order, had vanished. Yet, the passions evoked by the Third World countries' perception of such power and by their desire for political and economic equity had not subsided: They originally informed the need for negotiations and provided a purpose which still endures. These contributions shed light on the history of North-South negotiations and offer a rigorous and imaginative analysis of the alternative course of action that must now be confronted.
An introduction by Jagdish N. Bhagwati is followed by sections on Global Negotiations (Bhagwati, John Gerard Ruggie, Albert Bressand, Muchkund Dubey, John Sewell and William Zartman); Power Sharing and Institutional Change (Catherine Gwin); Debts, Finance, and Trade (Carlos Diaz-Alejandro, Martin Wolf, Jere Behrman); and USSR-South and South-South (Padma Desai, Sanjaya Lall).
Both editors are at Columbia University. Jagdish N. Bhagwati is Arthur Lehman Professor of Economics and Director of the International Economics Research Center. This book is a sequel to his earlier edited volume, The New International Economic Order (MIT Press paperback). John Gerard Ruggie is Professor of Political Science, Institute of War and Peace Studies.

Book Description
This book presents the progress made in the study of the mode of action of phytotoxic compounds that have been developed as herbicides in the recent past. The 13 chapters are written by experts in herbicide research and development, chemists, biochemists, and plant physiologists. The biochemistry of the target enzymes is described together with model assays, molecular genetics and special reference to transgenic herbicide-resistant crops. Additional chapters deal with new synthetic chemical pathways, chirality effects found in certain herbicide classes, and transcuticular pesticide penetration.

Book Description
Statistics courses frequently gloss over the foundations of statistical analysis and concentrate solely on method. As a result, students are able to perform the techniques, but do not know when to utilize them or how to interpret results incorporating statistical methods. Designed to give geography students a solid understanding of key statistical concepts, this in-depth text both presents basic techniques and fully explores their meaning and importance. Structured for optimal classroom use, the book includes helpful student exercises with answer keys. Four broad sections provide comprehensive coverage of descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, statistical relationships between two variables, and modern methods of analysis.

Book Description
A personal tour through the world of physics--from Newton's laws to quantum mechanics--by one of the most celebrated physicists of the twentieth century.
In Conversations on the Dark Secrets of Physics, Teller returns to the fundamentals of physics to share with readers his unbridled enthusiasm for the world of physical reality--from the nature of molecules to quantum mechanics and superconductors, from the elementary laws of thermodynamics to how planets, asteroids, and comets develop their orbits. By simplifying the math and forgoing the often-confusing technical jargon, Teller helps the reader break through physic's bewildering formulas and equations and get to the wonders of our physical universe. A timeless and personal explanation of the importance of physics in our life, Conversations on the Dark Secrets of Physics is certain to become a classic.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent read, excellent man.......2005-10-31
Good subject matter from a man who knew and developed modern physics.
Not only was Teller a great man in advancing pure and applied physics, he is also one of the great unsung heros of the United States and the free world.
best forgotten.......2004-06-09
With so many good competitors available today
there was no reason to resurrect this fossil.
The real essence of Teller.......2003-09-13
I came away from reading this book (and from occasionally meeting and working with Teller) convinced that the essence of the man was not the political animal familiar to the public, but rather someone driven by a wonderfully childlike curiosity about any and all aspects of science. You may feel that the world would have been better off without him, but read this book anyway. I'll bet you wind up agreeing with Bob Parks of the American Physical Society: "Physics will be less interesting without him."
A Great Teacher.......2003-01-06
This is a wonderful book that is very clearly written and joy to read and read again. Dr. Teller shows how some of the most
difficult ideas can be made clear by examples. I liked his
conversational style, it reads as if Dr. Teller is talking directly to you. This is one of the top books on physics with the general reader in mind. Some of the best books for the general reader were written by the greatest contributors in the field. Other selections by: Einstein, Max Born, Richard Feynman, do well for the general reader but requires a little more math, ... not hard math, simple but rich math full of motion, ... math you need to visualize.
Dr. Teller helps you visualize ideas, as good teachers do.
I was very happy to see this book back in print having barrowed the hard cover book from the library a number of times just to hear again how Dr. Teller said it; and to make clear again an idea that puzzled me. It is well worth reading and owning.

Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Set on the moors, it is a pity that the Hound of the Baskervilles didn't get 'em. This would have saved a lot of characters a lot of grief.
An orphan is taken in, and the problems start there as he grows up, has his own problems and inflicts them on others.
The great detective has something to say about such places :
"But look at these lonely houses, each in its own fields, filled
for the most part with poor ignorant folk who know little of the law. Think of
the deeds of hellish cruelty, the hidden wickedness which may go on, year in,
year out, in such places, and none the wiser. Had this lady who appeals to us
for help gone to live in Winchester, I should never have had a fear for her. It
is the five miles of country which makes the danger."

Book Description
It's winter, but academic madness is in full bloom at the State University of Michigan. Untenured English professor Nick Hoffman is trying to keep out of the line of fire as three senior professors battle to be department chair--all of whom hate each other and demand Nick's support. The situation implodes when an emergency meeting turns the department, and normal academic procedure, upside down. In an intense atmosphere of mounting crisis, Nick and his colleagues lose rights and autonomy, and he is desperate for a quick getaway. Nick's partner, Stefan, suggests an idyllic week at a Caribbean Club Med. The island of Serenity, however, proves to be anything but serene. Once again, Edith Wharton scholar Nick Hoffman, who grew up in New York City without even being mugged, finds himself face-to-face with murder. His winter vacation in paradise becomes a nightmare as he learns the truth of the warning that You can run, but you can't hide. And on a tiny island, there's nowhere even to run...
Customer Reviews:
A Literary Treat.......2006-02-01
The academic world at the State University of Michigan is going out of control. As one crisis after another occurs English professor Nick Hoffman and his partner, Stefan, decide it's time to get out of there for a little break. A week at a Caribbean Club Med sounds like just the thing. But the island of Serenity is anything but serene as they find themselves face to face with murder.
Lev Raphael has written a wonderfully amusing, literary mystery full of the craziness of academic politics. The writing is a delight to read, the plot will keep you guessing and the characters come to life. A fun read that will make you want to read the rest in the series if you haven't already.
Tropic of Murder.......2005-08-19
The witty and literate Lev Raphael always seems to break the old Yiddish proviso: "You shouldn't 'mix in!' " Anyone who has been to college, on either side of the lecture podium, will remember the ambience and hierarchy so archly portrayed in his Nick Hoffman Mystery series, and will empathize with the intellectual curiosity of the "inquiring mind."
Tropic of Murder enmeshes the familiar characters of Michiganapolis in more Academic power plays [presaging some astonishing cognates in current political maneuvers!], that send our heroes to a tropical Isle in search of peace and lethargy. A kind of Club "Med-ri-cide" interrupts, so Nick and Stefan do indeed "mix in," providing us with another rapid-fire romp. Save yourself a ticket to Bahama; curl up with this Crima-Colada treat.
Hilarious and Smart.......2005-08-11
There's nobody out there who writes academic satire as pointed as Lev Raphael, and this book carries the bizarre doings at State University of Michigan to new heights and new lows.
Raphael's characters aren't caricatures, though, and that's because of the book's emotional depth and the fine writing.
His plots poke fun at the mystery genre while being smart and well-wrought, and puzzling out the solution is as much fun as being entertained by the witty narration.
I loved seeing Nick and Stefan in a different setting for part of the book, and hope that Raphael will occasionally send his sleuths further afield, while anchoring them at the academic snake pit his fans have come to know and love--at least love reading about.
One-dimensional characters, poor plotting........2005-07-03
Nick and partner Stefan Borowski head for a Caribbean Club Med to escape academic departmental politics. But, of course, it follows them there, and then there is a murder. Nick, who is a PI manqué, naturally must investigate, especially as he and Stefan find the body and it appears that someone is trying to implicate him.
Not one of Raphael's best. Too many of the characters are one-dimensional, with no clear motivations for their behavior. Plotlines appear and disappear with no resolution. The solution to the mystery comes out of left field, as the murderer, for no apparent reason, decides to divulge all to Nick and then flee. Even WITH a confession, there's no satisfactory motivation for the murder.
And, Lev? While you may not care for Michael Cunningham's work, too much sniping at him in your book looks like professional jealousy. Tone it down.
Intelligent and perceptive........2005-06-11
This was my first Lev Raphael book and one of the few books I've read in the murder-mystery genre. Now that I've read it, I plan to read the rest of the Nick Hoffman series -- and perhaps his other books as well.
What impressed me most about "Tropic of Murder" was the intelligence and wisdom displayed by the main character, Nick, and his partner Stefan. Fictional "private eyes" seem often to be paranoid loners or gritty malcontents. But Nick is in a long-term, committed relationship, and he and Stefan clearly care about each other.
Though (like any couple) they have their problems, Nick and Stefan maintain a quiet dignity in the face of racism, academic infighting, homophobia, and, of course, murder. Theirs is not a wisdom that was "learned on the streets by staring down the barrel of a gun", etc. Instead, they are well-read, sensitive, self-aware, and relatively sane and happy, especially compared to many of the damaged souls they encounter. These are just the sort of people you'd want to be around when on vacation - or when investigating a murder.
I also liked, for the most part, the author's use of literary and pop-culture references to describe situations. I'm a "reference buff" myself, and I think it worked very well in many places. (Were I to nit-pick, I'd say he used it a bit too often -- but it certainly did not detract.)
Strongly recommended.

Book Description
This examination of daily life in ancient Maya civilization presents the very latest discoveries and interpretations and corrects popular misconceptions. Based on the results of recent research from a variety of disciplines, it traces Maya civilization from its earliest beginnings to the Spanish conquest in the 16th century and shows how the Maya successfully adapted to their environment and preserved their traditional culture and lauguages from oppression over thousands of years. Archaeologist Sharer, one of the foremost experts on the Maya, offers unique insights into Maya civilization based on 30 years of living and working in Central America. Over 60 illustrations and photographs of Maya life, artifacts, and archaeological sites bring the social, political, economic, religious, and cultural aspects of Maya civilization to life. For ease of use by students, the work is organized into chapters covering all aspects of Maya life and civilization: the foundations of Maya life and civilization: early, middle, and late Maya civilization; economy (production and trade); social and political systems; life cycle events; religion; writing and calendars; and the variety of arts and crafts. The work closes with discussion of the meaning of Maya civilization for us today -- how the achievements and failures of the Maya past can be of benefit to the modern world. The work includes a historical timeline of Maya civilization and a bibliography for further reading. This work will replace all earlier resources on the Maya and will provide school and public librarians and students with the most up-to-date and historically accurate information on the Maya.
Customer Reviews:
Everything you Need in One Book.......2002-07-05
I don't know whether Professor Sharer wrote this book to be a college textbook. It certainly can be used as one for an overall basic survey of Mayan civilization for the undergraduate. In case you were wondering, it is most definitely not of the "Daily Life in Ancient Rome" type of book that was so popular when I was a kid. This is adult stuff.
Not that the book is slow; on the contrary, it is generally good reading all the way through. It covers just about everything at least a little bit, and the bibliography leads you on to more detailed reference when you need it. It not only covers the sum total of the latest in Mayan archeology, but includes most of the anthropological data that Mayanists have found useful in their construction of Classic Mayan culture, as well as a brief but satisfactory review of Mayan writing.
The one thing I found unsatisfactory was Professor Sharer's need to grandstand on ecological issues whenever the topic could be conveniently inserted into the discussion at hand. While I generally agree with the ecological movement, I felt that it was out of place in this book. If that doesn't bother you, have at it - this book is the state of the art on what we know about the Maya. Of course, that will change in a couple of years, but by then a revised edition will be in order!

Book Description
A fascinating look at near-future advances, inventions, products, services, and everyday conveniences that will change how we live and work. Marvin Cetron and Owen Davies explore these changes and the impact they will have on everyday life. For example, by the year 2010:-Personal computers will offer the power of today's supermachines and artificial intelligence.-A telecommunications network will supply the world with services from the contents of the Library of Congress to pornographic videos in Cantonese.-The United States-reversing a decades-old trend-will link its major cities with hig-speed railroads.-Airplanes will be capable of leaping halfway around the world in just two hours.-Consumer goods will be produced at prices so low the poor of tomorrow could live as well as the rich of today.-Scientists will have learned to purge the air of pollution, closing up the Antarctic ozone hole and ending the threat of global warming.-Heavy industries can move into space, so that Earth can recover from our past environmental follies.-Dramatic advances in gene mapping and organ transplants will extend the healthy human life span well beyond the century mark.Science and technology have dominated life in developed countries since the Industrial Revolution. In the twenty-first century, the will change it almost beyond recognition. Probable Tomorrows tells us how.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2001-08-25
Authors Marvin Cetron and Owen Davies examine anticipated trends in technology over the next 15 to 20 years. They categorize their studies under digital systems, the Internet, high-tech materials, nanotechnology, transportation, space, energy, medicine and environmental remediation. They examine specific technological proposals and estimate their chances for success within the next two decades. An appendix lists specific predictions and the probability that each will come to pass. The book is necessarily superficial, since it covers such a broad range of topics. Unavoidably, some predictions are already somewhat dated, particularly those about industries that undergo constant, rapid change, such as medicine, computers and the Internet. However, the book provides a thorough survey of the range of technologies that are under study and development. This book is a rich source of ideas and makes interesting connections among disparate technologies. We [...] recommend the book to all corporate planners, trend-researchers and long-term thinkers.
Probable Tommorow.......2001-05-05
I've read this book only half so far, but I tell even Siskel and Ebert would give this book 2 thumbs up I think..My opinion. I'm probably the only person in the Netherlands Antilles who bought this book. i'm honored to had bought it. I highly recommend it !!!
Driving blindfolded . . ........2001-03-24
and taking directions from someone in the back seat looking out the back window. That's one definition of forecasting. Despite the hazards, the authors bravely predict what is going to happen with some very interesting developments in the business world.
Probable Tomorrows was interesting to read since it was written in 1997 and made some predictions for "today" that we can use as a benchmark for accuracy. And all in all, the predictions were good. The tables at the end of the book, and the timeline for changes can be used to help us see what we might need to do to update our company strategies (as outlined in a recent book e-Strategy).
Some of the topics discussed here were expanded upon in the futuristic book The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil. Between these two books, a broad brush look at what we are in store for emerges and may indeed give us some hints on how to formulate business strategy to take us into the future. Overall, I would rate this book a 3 out of 5. It was well written and easy to read, but books that attempt to forecast the future are qickly dated.
Its The Technology, Stupid!.......2000-09-01
This book is about science and technology, with an emphasis and interest from my perspective on the technology.
Here are seven things I was drawn to that this book points out. First, new technologies arrive first in war. Second, the convergence of computers, telephones, and everything digital is taking place. Third, artificial intelligence makes possible analysis never before possible. Fourth, the availability of information through the Internet is coming with great ease. Fifth, attendance is increasing at meetings announced on the Internet. Sixth, regular, global communciation is happening on the Internet. Seventh, the discovery to delivery time is collapsing.
These seven statements came out in this book published three years ago, but probably written four years ago. How true are they today? Very true, but already way down the road in several of the areas. How much progress have we already made in some of these areas? A lot!
So, that makes the greatest current day value of this book to be one of understanding the rate and pace of change, and understanding the predictability or unpredictability of the future from a recent history perspective.
As a solid work on the future of science and technology, I commend this book as one to still read to understand the way we can continue to frame and anticipate the future through creative, cutting edge, futures research and in-depth thinking.
Conservative, but very readable.......1998-11-18
The authors explore the usual catagories of futurism: medicine, transportation, comunication, etc. Most of their predictions are fairly conservative. Where I found the most interest and actually got a "Wow!" was in their predictions of medical advancements in the next twenty years. If their predictions about cancer treatment, gene replacement, and hormone replacement therapy come true, our lives really will be changed in significant ways.
Although, as I said, most of what they predict is not all that astounding, I found the book very readable and enjoyable. It was much better than "2025."
