Don't judge a book by its cover ... forget this one!.......2003-04-30

Even though Dr. Alder has written a variety of books on subjects involving the impact of our perception and self-representation, this book leaves me with the impression that he might not have a thorough understanding of the subject matter at hand.

He includes a wide variety of terms under the NLP umbrella, that are at most remotely related to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Borrowing heavily from other sources to enhance the scope of subjects covered in his book, he leaves the reader with a quite distorted impression of what NLP might be.

This book is a far cry from the original works on NLP writter by the likes of Robert Dilts. If you want to find out more about NLP and ways to apply its principles and practices in a workplace environment, take a look at Sue Knight's "NLP at Work: The Difference that makes a difference in business".

When going back to the original sources, you'll find that NLP originated as a means for self-improvement. While Alder, touches on this subject, he is, however, too focused on presenting NLP as a powerful means of manipulation.

In the hands of a wise manager or other practitioner, this aspect can be extremely helpful, assuming it is used and applied responsibly. I have seen and experienced a variety of cases, though in which this knowledge and these techniques were primarily used for manipulative efforts.

Such abuse in the long term can result in a bad reputation for NLP, which would be undeserved. A lot of other NLP authors place a much stronger focus on the self-improvement aspect, and also tend to favor a win-win strategy, rather than the win-lose goals that are stated in this book between the lines.

There's no explicit mention of win-lose as a goal, but it becomes apparent when going through the book. Overall, reading this book was a learning experience, unfortunately not in terms of the how-to in a workplace environment, but rather as a reminder of how differently the subject matter of NLP can be presented.

At the time of this review, this title was out-of-print; maybe the publisher will do us a favor and leave it at that.

Another Lemon-tinted Clunker.......2003-04-17

To cut straight to the chase, the title of this book is NOT strictly accurate.

Bits of the book are about mainstream NLP; chunks of the book are about things the author says are NLP but which you won't find in any other NLP book or course (the "four-stage success cycle", "life content", etc.); and the rest deals with things which you'll find in most bog standard management books, but which have nothing to do with NLP (SWOT, brainstorming, etc.).

I also wonder whether simply peppering a text with labels and phrases like "CEO", "project" and "organisational strategy" is sufficient to turn a loose collection of ideas into a book "for managers"?

Although I've read several of this author's books, I'm still not convinced that he really understands NLP to any great extent.

For example, the chapter on "reframing" mostly deals with pure "framing" - that is to say, it deals with change the external viewpoint rather than exploring internal interpretation, and is so confused, and confusing, that I really wasn't sure what the author was trying to say.

There is a section that allegedly deals with Robert Dilt's "neurological levels" model yet actually only describes the plain "logical levels" model. The author seems blissfully unaware that the model is neither logical nor about "levels", and as a consequence resorts to such vacuous statements as "The spiritual level This is the deepest neurological level ..."

The term "neurological" refers to the function and structure of the brain. In what sense, I wonder, does the author think that the "deepest" function and structure of the human brain is the bit which deals with spiritual matters? And just what does the author mean by "deepest" in this context, given that "spiritual" is supposedly the "highest" logical level in Dilts' model!

To be blunt, there's an awful lot in this book that one could find fault with, and very, very little to commend. If you're specifically looking for a book on the use of NLP in business I'd recommend David Molden's "Managing with the Power of NLP" or Andrew Bradbury's "Develop Your NLP Skills".

This book is nothing but a total lemon-tinted clunker.

Theoretical book, useful for reference, not as tutorial.......2007-02-08

This is a review of "Practical Magnetotellurics" by Fiona Simpson, Karsten Bahr. Let me start by saying that I am a scientist by training, initially unfamiliar with MT but interested in the topic, and used this book to bring myself up to speed with the topic.

There are not many books on MT, or even books on EM methods in general that include MT at least as a sub topic. Therefore, it is a plus that a book dedicated to the topic exists in the first place. However, I found it more a book useful as a reference in case you are already familiar with the theory, and less a book for starters. The reason is the style of the book: I would describe it as theoretical, and from an academic perspective. The book has 246 pages, of which I estimate only 20 cover topics as introduction to MT, practical aspects, and tutorial like explanations of concepts the reader new to MT might not be familiar with. The bulk of the book is dedicated to more in-depth theoretical aspects relating to inversion, transfer functions, dimensionality, etc.. Many sentences are of the form "From equation () we find ..." and "From the definition of .. we can ...".

In itself this is not negative, it is a choice the authors have made. But it makes the book less suitable for newcomers to the field. I have learned the technology myself through reading lots of articles, doing calculations, working with MT software, etc., and now this book is standing in my bookcase and I find myself rarely picking it up again unless I need to look up something I know that is in there. Also, when I need to explain MT to someone else, I find myself hardly using any material from the book. My own experience on *first* reading was not that of an enjoyable journey into a new and fascinating subject, but more often that of frustration of not understanding what I was reading.

For a better introduction to the topic, I can recommend the following review article: A. Orange, "Magnetotelluric exploration for hydrocarbons", Proc. of IEEE, Vol. 77, No. 2, pp. 287-317 (feb. 1989).

Bottom line: good reference book covering the theoretical underpinnings complete with list of references, glossary, appendices on mathematical aspects, and index. But for educational use, or as tutorial for self-study, is falls short because of its theoretical style and lack of ability to guide the reader into new - and as yet unfamiliar - terrain. So the title "practical MT" is misleading, it should be "theoretical MT".

There is nothing better regarding Sustainability.......2007-05-09

Bill Mollison represents the most successful attempt to mainstream practical home-scale sustainable design principles. I found myself needing to do an enormous amount of supplementary research to actually understand what bill was talking about, but to explain them in depth here would have taken away from the thrust of the book - which is mainly to show you example after example (many on every page) at sustainable principles of design put into practice.

The book remains the best book on sustainability written to date. There are some aspects of his system that are lacking that I will briefly draw attention to. Understand that I deeply appreciate his genius, but I want to just mention that these other things need to be integrated into his system to be fully fully sustainable.

1) He doesn't pay enough attention to seed saving and plant breeding. A loss of seed diversity and a re-invigoration of seed savers is essential to truly sustainable self-sufficient design.

2) He very rarely mentions the role mushrooms and fungi can play in sustainability.

3) He doesn't stress the science behind it enough, which is fine, but leaves you asking sometimes... how do we know this is really ecologically sound? How can I NOT imitate mr. mollison but still create an ecologically sound system? Basically, Mollison's proscriptions are incredibly scientifically informed but not always scientifically explicit.

4) In relation to the first point, he also doesn't stress the role that evolution plays in sustainability. This is a very complicated problem, see book.

These are not really criticism so much as signs of slight conceptual anal retentiveness on my part... Also please don't forget mollison's OTHER books which are incredible as well, especially the permaculture book of ferment and human nutrition.

Amazing book!.......2006-03-20

I bought this book many years ago and still find myself going back and re-reading it over and over. If you're new to the Permaculture thought process you will be knocked off your horse with the common-sense, integrated approach to gardening and farming systems. I attribute this book and the thoughts provoked by it as the catalyst in seeking integrations and aggregation on many different fronts. This will always be one of the books I will treasure. I wore off the cover and have punched holes in all the pages and keep it in a three-ring binder.

Ignore the Cost.......2006-03-03

The information presented in this book is worth a semester of agriculture, chemistry, and geography classes.

I was initially set back when I went looking for a copy of this classic and discovered that there wasn't a recent printing available and all of the ones on the market were over $100 at the time. Still, I wanted to learn about Permaculture and everyone said that this was the place to start.

I am extremely happy with my decision to buck up and fork over my money. This text is the source from which all others on the topic are written and they pale in comparison.

If you are someone who is looking to homestead, or currently doing so, this book will help you plan your own gardens, manage your land as a whole, and be able to assist others in the community.

Lastly, the book is a nice hardcover, the pages are thick for a tome of this size, and the print is nice and dark. The copy in front of me has been well thumbed, tossed around, and shelved on many occassions and is still holding up nicely. Only the corners are dinged up a little.

The Most Important Textbook in the World..........2005-09-15

...and probably one of the most fun to read. I read the first 8 chapters while working on a permaculture site on Isla Ometepe in Nicaragua, and ordered it immediately upon returning home.

Bill Mollison carefully and beautifully lays out the theory and practice of Permaculture (permanent agriculture). Permaculture is a holistic design system that sustainably envisions, creates, and organizes the spaces that we as humans inhabit on this planet. It takes everything that I feel is good for the world-Green architecture, local food, water conservation, renewable energy, organic agriculture, etc.-and wraps them into one cohesive scheme for planning the spaces and manner in which we live.

Wow! These ideas could change the world! .......2005-06-21

The author's enthusiasm is tangible, and sweeps you up. So far as the book is concerned, this isn't just about landscaping, farming, or gardening: it ties into absolutely everything in the world, including fractals as they appear in the flow of water and wind; it brings in Aboriginal legends, as you can see from the elaborate symbolism on the cover; it talks about economy, health, production, and everything. Everything is far-reaching, everything is connected. This is the most holistic book I've ever seen.

Not living in Australia or anywhere near it, I was a bit distressed when I saw that the book was from there. I was concerned that the book would only tell of plant-communities involving exotic palms and tropical oddities which wouldn't apply to me in my cold, wet environment. To the contrary, the book actually embraces the whole world, not just Australia. This is clearly seen in the color plates, which (to my surprise) even had a photograph of a place I'd visited that very morning. While the book does talk about some species that are strictly Australian, most of its content is of worldwide usefulness, such as earth berms and other practical land-forms and configurations.
