The accelerated, and often uncontrolled, growth of the cities has contributed to the ecological transformation of their immediate surroundings. Factors contributing to the urban vulnerability include: lowering or rising of the water table, subsidence, loss of bearing capacity of soil foundations and instability of slopes. Recent catastrophic earthquakes highlight the poor understanding by decision makers of seismic related risk, as well as the tendency of some builders to use the cheapest designs and construction materials to increase short-term economic returns on their investment.

Losses from earthquakes will continue to increase if we do not shift towards proactive solution. Disaster reduction is both an issue for consideration in the sustainable development agenda and a cross-cutting issue relating to the social, economic, environmental and humanitarian sectors. As location is the key factor, which determines the level of risk associated with a hazard, land-use plans and mapping should be used as tools to identify the most suitable usage for vulnerable areas.

The quantum statistical properties of the light wave generated in a semiconductor laser or a light-emitting diode (LED) has been a field of intense research for more than a decade. This research monograph discusses recent research activities in nonclassical light generation based on semiconductor devices. This volume is composed of four major parts. The first discusses the generation of sub-shot-noise light in macroscopic pn junction light-emitting devices, including semiconductor laser and light-emitting diodes. The second part discusses the application of squeezed light in high-precision measurement, including spectroscopy and interferometry. The third part addresses the Coulomb blockade effect in a mesoscopic pn junction and the generation of single photon states. The last part covers the detection of single photons using a visible light photon counter.

In A Modest Defence of Publick Stews (1724) its reputed author Dr. Bernard Mandeville argues that the best solution to the problems of prostitution (with its related evils of venereal disease, infanticide and other crimes) is not to stamp it out-an impossibility-but to legalize it and regulate it under strict government supervision. This proposal seems serious enough, but Mandeville's satire, with bawdy humor and passages of deliberately faulty reasoning, calls into question the seriousness of this somewhat utopian project. In this first annotated edition, the editor reveals that this complex work often relies upon ancient Classical and Renaissance authors (Plato, Ovid, Martial, Shakespeare, Ariosto, Milton, Butler and especially Montaigne) and that it merits reconsideration as a work richer in literary values and vitality than most readers had previously imagined. It also remains very pertinent to our ongoing debates on prostitution and sexuality in this era of HIV and AIDS.
