Too many negative lessons.......2002-04-05

Not a bad book (paperback edition), but not as good as I expect from Wess Roberts. Unlike his other books, ("Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun" and "Victory Secrets of Attila the Hun") this one had a pervasive negative tone through use of many real-world "what-not-to-do" examples. This excessive negativity was de-motivating and made for heavy reading.

Roberts' strength is his use, understanding, and insightful leadership perspectives of historical figures. I learned a great deal about the myth of Achilles. Unfortunately, Roberts focused too many of his examples on the nine flaws of Achilles (disloyalty, greed, hostility, betrayal, withdrawal, inflexibility, deceit, vengeance, and arrogance) vice the nine shields of immortality (commitment, selflessness, cooperation, integrity, rigor, flexibility, honesty, respect, and humility).

I know there are many true stories of people in leadership positions who possess little to no true leadership qualities and lessons can be learned from them, but I prefer to read about true leaders who exemplify the true essence of leadership to learn what can be done. After reading his other two fine leadership books mentioned above, this book pales in comparison.

Notable for its ease of use........2000-04-10

Shapiro's "American Legal Quotations" is notable for its ease of use. It is more than simply a listing of pithy quotations. The sections of the book are arranged alphabetically by 208 topic headings and it has a rich index of authors and key words. Moreover, the quotations are keyed to precise legal citations so that legal writers can use the quotations with confidence. As a bonus, the book is fun to browse and read at leisure. It would be a welcome addition to any lawyer's or judge's library.

What would happen to your pet if something happened to you?.......2006-03-06

People never want to discuss this topic when it pertains to one another, let alone an animal companion. As sad as this is, it is
in reality, something we need to take care of before it is too late. Ophelia's Winter isn't just the story of a cat, but the terrible experiences of a beloved companion animal after the death of her owner. All of these things could have prevented. Although many parts of the story will make you cry, it seems to be what is needed in order to draw attention to some very important facts. If you love your pets, you have to have a plan in place in the event something unexpectedly ever happens to you.

This is definitely an original. Well written and empathetic toward the innocent. I've recently read a copy "cat" book...this original is much better. Susan Hill has heart. Keep writing Susan. It must be good for someone to "copy" it!

A modern classic.......2007-10-06

This book presents a modern perspective on a classic field, including the knowledge gained from the phenomenal amount of work carried out by the community of economic geologists over the previous 20 years. The book is written concisely but comprehensively describes the formation of all types of ore deposits, including coal and oil, which although of great economic importance are often not considered minerals. A particular strength of the book is its interweaving of the formation of ore deposits with the modern theory of plate tectonics. The book includes a special chapter on plate tectonics and the history of continental drift over the last several billion years. It is written in an enthusiastic style and contains many "boxed" examples of particular mineral deposits. Most of the world's famous deposits are covered in these boxes, which makes for entertaining reading. The main text is, however, quite demanding of the reader, and prior knowledge of chemistry is very helpful. A less demanding, although also less up to date, work is the classic 1986 text of Guilbert and Park The Geology of Ore Deposits.
