5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful analysis.......2007-09-24

This is a very worthwhile book that provides a clear and thoughtful investigation of the behavior of forex markets. There are no false notions that reading this book will automatically make you a millionaire. Instead there is an invitation to use these guidelines to do the work of developing your own system for trading. The author provides guidelines and templates that he uses in trading. More importantly, he provides the basis for a trader to construct his or her own system, based on an ongoing analysis of the basic structure of forex trading, and essential observations of price action. He doesn't downplay the extent to which forex price patterns include elements of unpredictability and randomness. However, he shows how one can learn from observation of what is occurring in the present situation as it unfolds to make trades with increased probabilities for success. This approach does not overemphasize technical analysis, but considers technical analysis as a way to gain confirmation of what is being observed. Thus, the reader is invited to build a system that increases probabilities for success while eschewing the false assumption that the future can be predicted from the past.

1 out of 5 stars Not useful at all........2007-07-27

I tried the concept described in this book in my demo a/c (thank god) for almost 1 1/2 month, even though most of the setup described in this or any other book are chosen to curve fit the formula. The results were random, which would have been the same if I had thrown a dice. My advice is to trade by fundamental news and open a hedge position. Being a lonely trader without the knowledge of so called experts or a team of economic research analyst, for a person like me I open both buy and sell position whenever there is a major economic event like interest rate announcement, consumer index etc. I cover the losing position and ride the winning position. After reading many books, attending seminar this is the only thing working for me. By the way most of the TA indicator like MACD, RSI, various moving averages etc. are all lagging indicator. Since history does not predict future why depend on them.

1 out of 5 stars Once again, where is the PROOF that these setups are even remotely profitable?.......2007-07-14

Another forex book with just a bunch of chart patterns that supposedly make money. As usual, no (Omega Trade Station) backtests. I even asked the author for the backtest results, his reply was something like this: "Well just try them [the patterns] and see if they work for you" ?!?!?!

Unfortunalely a lot of newcomers and newbies are clapping and praising this book, even though those people have no way of knowing if these patterns can pass a test of only 200 daytrades, let alone 1,000 historical daytrades!

Even more disturbing is the fact that the author shows you a pattern and the buy sell entry/exit, but then a few pages later, he shows you the same exact pattern and tells you that you can also do the reverse ?!?!?
In other words the pattern is supposed to make money no matter how you trade it?!?!

So Mr. Toshchakov, we are still waiting for your backtest results. Show us that these patterns make money (if any).

1 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible and utterly worthless for actual trading.......2007-05-18

I assume most of the glowing reviews of Toshchakov's inscrutable mish-mash are shilling for the publisher. This book makes problematic systems based upon crude algorithms, simple break-outs, and even astrology look positively brilliant by comparison. Without a doubt, this is one of the most useless trading manuals ever devised and represents a total waste of the reader's money. The highly-touted, ostensibly KISS templates that constitute the system's heart are so complex, obscure, and hedged about by contingent factors as to be absolutely impossible to identify, much less utilize. Even the author's "commsense" advice on trading trendlines is facile garbage for anyone who has more than a few week's experience on the FOREX. I feel sorry for those who purchase this volume in the honest hope of learning some viable trading techniques: their intense disappointment -- and monetary loss -- is guaranteed.

5 out of 5 stars Wow - its the first Forex book that i did not regret buying.......2007-05-13

This book is a must have for forex traders. Even if it require alot of practice to be comfortable applying the techniques, you must read.

              Book Description

This book is intended as a textbook for courses in micrometeorology for undergraduate students (juniors or seniors) in meteorology or environmental science, as well as for an introductory graduate-level course in boundary-layer meteorology. It will also serve as a good reference for professional meteorologists, environmental scientists and engineers, particularly those interested in problems of air pollution, atmospheric-biospheric interactions, wind-engineering and engineering meteorology.

The book outlines basic laws and concepts, before using qualitative descriptions to introduce more complex theories. This new edition is updated and expanded, as are the references. Each chapter features worked-through problems and exercises.

              5 out of 5 stars Good textbook.......2007-05-03

Good overall review and introduction to micrometeorology. Easy to read and understand with examples.

5 out of 5 stars good entry level textbook.......2007-03-24

This book was used as the textbook for a class on hydrometeorology. The explanations and sequence of the text was good for an entry level class on the subject. The book does not cover precipitation and clouds, an important part of micrometeorology, but overall I would recommend the text. More detailed descriptions of some of the physical processes are given in other texts. Extensive reference section to lead interested readers to relevant research papers.

                    Book Description

Much of what we know today of Rome in the fourth century has its source in Res Gestae, the sole surviving work of the historian Ammianus Marcellinus. The accuracy of Ammianus' reporting has come under question over the past fifty years, however, and Timothy D. Barnes here offers new grist for skepticism.

This is the first book on Ammianus to place equal emphasis on the literary and historical aspects of his writing. Barnes assesses Ammianus' depiction of historical reality by investigating the Res Gestae's strengths and weaknesses, as well as its literary qualities. He examines its structure and arrangement, emphasizes its Greek and pagan features, and points out the extent to which Ammianus drew on his imagination in shaping the narrative.

Ammianus, raised as a Christian, became an apostate when Julian seemed to promise a return to traditional religion and values. In Res Gestae, he expressed strongly held views, often in vivid and extreme language. Barnes explores the historian's biases and personal prejudices, documenting seemingly intentional distortions and demonstrating that Ammianus advanced a pessimistic and anti-Christian interpretation of the Roman Empire.

                    Book Description

If the twenty-first century seems an unlikely stage for the return of a 14th-century killer, the authors of Return of the Black Death argue that the plague, which vanquished half of Europe, has only lain dormant, waiting to emerge again—perhaps, in another form. At the heart of their chilling scenario is their contention that the plague was spread by direct human contact (not from rat fleas) and was, in fact, a virus perhaps similar to AIDS and Ebola. Noting the periodic occurrence of plagues throughout history, the authors predict its inevitable re-emergence sometime in the future, transformed by mass mobility and bioterrorism into an even more devastating killer.

3 out of 5 stars Where are the footnotes please??? Sloppy scholarship........2007-07-29

I recently bought this book as well as Justinian's Flea: Plague, Empire and the Birth of Europe and The Great Mortality: An Intimate History of the Black Death.. All are fascinating reads. However, unlike the 2 latter books, Return of the Black Death lacks essential footnotes( or even chapter " notes" at the end of the book) needed to support one's "evidence" and conclusions.

There are too many examples to cite them all . But , I shall give one example from a randomly opened page : On page 77, many " facts" are listed and not one is referenced. Erasmus and even Henry VII is quoted....but again, nothing given to refer to as an original or even a secondary source.

I don't know if this was sloppy scholarship or a rush to get the book published. I am a bit disappointed...especially after reading the other 2.

3 out of 5 stars Solid and interesting but full of fluff .......2006-09-11

This is an excellent example of a book that would have made a very good magazine or journal article. The authors are convincing in their case that haemmoragic plague, rather than bubonic plague, constituted the Black Death. And, it is possible that scientists could engineer a superbug that could kill millions of billions of people. But all of this could have been said much more efficiently in 30 pages. Especially in the first half of the book, the authors put in huge block quotations from primary sources, in explaining the effects of the plague. In the whole book there are countless examples and long explanations. The pages themselves are fairly small. But there isn't that much to say and, again, it could have been said with much more brevity. The substance of what they say and the bottom-line conclusions are solid and interesting, but blown up with lots of filler, the book does not quite succeed as such.

                    5 out of 5 stars Quite Convincing.......2006-04-05

I'm a life sciencist. I read this book about 6 months ago and looked it up on Amazon today because I wanted to recommend it to my brother. In looking over the reviews, I must disagree with the first reviewer who, if he read the book at all, appears not to have comprehended any of it. The book is utterly fascinating, and the evidence the authors present in support of their hypothesis is convincing. The authors finish their tour de force by explaining how the myth that Yersinnia pestis was the cause of the Black Death came into being. Great myths are difficult to dispel. Hopefully, the painstaking detecive work we can praise and thank the authors for will eventually put paid to the deep-rooted myth that the Black Death was caused by fleas transmitting Yersinnia pestis from rats to humans.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting but Questionable.......2005-03-11

While an interesting perspective on both disease in our current world and the nature of disease itself, their evidence left me unconvinced.

It has been well documented and proven the Y. Pestis, the cause of the Black Plague, is common and almost exclusive to rat populations. For the plague to spread to humans certain conditions need to be met. Yes, world travel and trade increases the risk of spreading the plague and yes, it is very likely that another outbreak could occur as it has done for hundreds of years. The period between 1347 -1355 was not the first or only occurance of this particular plague, it was just the most deadly.

They offered no plausible explanation of the origin of y. pestis nor did they prove that rats are not the carriers of the disease. Black Rats and their particular species of flea have been the identified carriers since the victorian era. It has been widely documented and proven that in this disease, humans are mere collateral. The evidence presented in this book is well documented and interesting, but it fails to prove their point.

5 out of 5 stars A Whole New Look that Makes Total Sense!.......2005-02-11

Scott and Duncan have quite obviously done their homework! I can't imagine the time (& tedium) it must have taken to sift through all those records, but it was well worth the effort. I believe Scott and Duncan have seriously found the genuine cause of the Black Death. The way they present their information makes it seem as though it were staring us in the face all along. It's hard to believe so many scientists have clung to false assumptions in the face of what seems to be overwhelming evidence (just consider Iceland alone!). I simply won't be able to equate the Black Death with the Bubonic/Pneumonic ever again.
