It's quaint that in this day of search engines to help us find more search engines, some old-fashioned reference books are still perennial sellers. When The Irwin Guide to Using The Wall Street Journal premiered in 1984, the future day traders of the world weren't trading much more than Atari cartridges. So, the advent of this sixth edition--penned, as ever, by Michael B. Lehmann, a University of San Francisco economics professor who has developed a popular seminar class around it--receives a round of well-deserved kudos.

Even if, that is, its title remains a bit of a misnomer. For this is not, nor has ever it been, so much a guide to using the WSJas it is a tidy primer on the fundamental workings of the U.S. economy and stock markets, intended not just to help readers enjoy the WSJ more, but to help them more fully comprehend what they read there. Lehmann covers just about everything, like a rigorous-but-not-draconian year of Economics 101: from how and why interest rates affect markets and when to expect the next recession to the Federal Reserve's impact on your investment portfolio and which fixed-income market is right for you. The guided tour Lehmann gives is well organized and accessible to the average financial layperson who can handle sentences slightly longer than those in USA Today and doesn't think "Federal Reserve" refers to an early 19th-century architectural style. A certain amount of patience may be called for, too: though no opaque academic text, The Irwin Guide is far from one of those Dummies/Idiots books that somehow crams the greatest matters of civilization into what generally look like coloring books for adults. Lehmann's text is dense, relieved only occasionally by various charts or articles previously published in the WSJ. Curious is the near-total absence of terms you would have expected to see in an update from the 1996 edition--terms like "Internet," "dot-com," and "WWW." But after six editions you have to think that Lehmann's a sly one--maybe he speaks most eloquently of how the current dot-com/IPO mania will play in the long term by saying absolutely nothing. --Timothy Murphy

3 out of 5 stars Basic Information and not all in the WSJ.......2006-07-30

The book is a light introduction to economics. As such, it is interesting and it does lead you to some of the more obscure corners of the WSJ online (for which even print subscribers must pay a subscription fee, plus another for Barron's online).

A big problem, however, is that a majority of the interesting charts with historical data are drawn from sources other than the WSJ. In addition, these sources (such as the US Census Bureau) provide only the raw data, not the charts.

      5 out of 5 stars ON Target.......2005-11-26

The problem with too many people who have some extra money to invest is that they listen too much to too many who know too little. Everyone is always looking for the fast money. Often the investment money goes down the tubes with the bad advice promising quick reward.

Michael Lehmann has written a book that takes any investor through a thoughtful, fact filled series of lessons on how to use data to make well informed decisions. Listening to Uncle Bob pontificate about his "Big dollar investment tip" for the day should go right out the window. Lehmann's "Using the Wall Street Journal" should become the primer for anyone who is serious about investing with knowledge. A little reading of the right material pays off. Michael Lehmann's book IS the right material and has paid off for me over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars The best economics book ever.......2005-11-19

I used this book in my Internet Data Sources class at the University of San Francisco in the Spring of 2005. The course was taught by the author of the book, Michael B Lehmann. He is the greatest professor ever and this book helped through the whole course, which was the most useful I took in college.

      5 out of 5 stars really useful.......2005-10-29

As someone who never set foot into an economics classroom, Michael Lehmann's book is a huge relief. His book clearly walks the reader through the process of how the economy actually works and demystifies economic indicators. This book gave me a seat at the table of my own financial management.

5 out of 5 stars American Economic System Made Easier.......2005-10-22

Michael Lehmann proves that you don't have to get a college degree in Economics to be able to understand the American economic system. Using the multifold economic data regularly published by the Wall Street Journal as his his focus, Professor Lehmann goes about explaining the background and meaning of the data and how to interpret it for your own advantage. He covers subjects which would be includedin a variety of college courses and does so in a clear and understandable narative.

He provides a rich background and explanation on subjects such as the Business Cycle, Role of consumer demand, the role of the Federal Reserve System, Fiscal Policy, International Transactions, and the Leading Economic Indicators. He also provides information on how to keep up with the data using internet and computer access.

A must have for any person interested in understanding the American economy.

      Book Description

Fundamentals of Investments was created to: 1. Focus on students as investment managers, giving them information they can act on instead of concentrating on theories and research without the proper context. 2. Offer strong, consistent pedagogy, including a balanced, unified treatment of the main types of financial investments as mirrored in the investment world. 3. Organize topics in a way that makes them easy to apply--whether to a portfolio simulation or to real life--and support these topics with hands-on activities. The approach of this text reflects two central ideas. First, there is a consistent focus on the student as an individual investor or investments manager. Second, a consistent, unified treatment of the four basic types of financial instruments--stocks, bonds, options, and futures--focusing on their characteristics and features, their risks and returns, and the markets in which they trade.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Beginners.......2002-12-05

This book is great for beginners who want to learn about investing. It teaches practical things rather than some theory about something the average persons doesn't understand. The best part of this book is the Stock-Trak.....it's very fun lets you play the stock market with funny money.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on understanding markets.......1999-12-24

As a lawyer with an MBA and CFP I have read dozens of books on markets and investing. This is the best book anywhere on not only learning how to read the WSJ but on understanding the way markets work. It manages to explain often complex topics with layman's ease. It walks you through every part of the financial section of WSJ carefully, completely, and clearly. There are companies outthere that specialize in finding out of print books. Do yourself a favor and find this book, it is worth it. Or I can sell you my copy for $1000.

Focusing on white, Anglo-Protestant farm women in southern and southwestern Ontario, Monda Halpern argues that many Ontario farm women were indeed feminist, and that this feminism was more progressive than their conservative image has suggested.

It presents realistic engineering problems, which in many cases encourage the student to utilise knowledge gained over a range of topics; an approach which is difficult in the main textbooks where questions are presented chapter by chapter. In each chapter the relevant equations are followed by graded questions. Answers are provided at the end of the book and are supplemented with additional hints, practical points, and other useful information.

                            Book Description

This book is the first contemporary book to compare and integrate the various ways geographers think about and use scale across the spectrum of the discipline and includes state-of-the-art contributions by authoritative human geographers, physical geographers, and GIS specialists. The editors place competing concepts of scale side by side, demonstrating how different aspects are significant for each, and providing a detailed comparative assessment. They set out from the premise that there is much acknowledged common ground between these different approaches and that valuable insight can be gained by exploring it.In light of the increased interest in global change and globalisation, there has been a huge surge of interest in the environmental and human sciences in the relationship between the global, the regional and the local. For this reason, this cutting edge survey of how geographers conceptualise scale should be of interest across a broad range of disciplines.

The importance of scale and its implications in any field that has a geographic component are clearly portrayed here. This is a book that explains why it is important to consider the different concepts behind scale. This is very crucial since use of GIS and spatial data are becoming so widespread among specialists (geographers and non-geographers) and the general public. At the end it will provide you with lots of examples about how spatial thinking is such an important process in our everyday life.

I've kept this book "under my pillow" during my whole dissertation writing process, and it has been very influential.

                                        Book Description

Keep your cultural resources safe for generations to come!

Culled from papers presented at a Library of Congress symposium in October 2000, The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources: To Preserve and Protect examines the challenges you face in preserving and safeguarding your library's resources. Twenty-two leading library and archival professionals address critical issues on the preservation and security of collections in cultural property institutions, including libraries, museums, and archives. The book explores the connections between physical security and the preservation of our cultural heritage.

The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources identifies the risks involved in preserving cultural resources and presents effective strategies for security. The book guides you through the process of evaluating preservation and security programs, budgeting costs, determining the right amount of facilities security, meeting the challenge of preserving digital information, and coping with the negative effects of theft and vandalism.

The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources focuses on four keys that are central to safeguarding your heritage assets:

physical security—protection from theft, mutilation, damage by water, fire, etc., with strategies used by the Library of Congress and other major libraries
preservation—protection from deterioration through conservation and reformatting, using examples from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of Congress, and other institutions
bibliographic control—knowing what your library has
inventory control—knowing where your collections are

The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources: To Preserve and Protect also examines the FBI's Art Theft Program, national and institutional requirements for preservation funding, and measuring the effect of environmental elements (temperature, humidity, etc.) on your collection. The book is an essential resource for library, archive, and museum directors, preservation officers, security professionals, curators, and archivists.

                                        Book Description

The setting is Washington, D.C. The action begins when President Harley Hudson is killed in an air crash. The Speaker of the House becomes President and calls for a national committee to select new nominees for the coming election.

The theme of this novel is violence in American life--a violence promoted and condoned by politicians who are fools, dupes or knaves. The narrative moves quickly, full of the excitement and intrigue for which Allen Drury is well known.

                                        Customer Reviews:

                                        4 out of 5 stars HIS BEST SINCE ADVICE & CONSENT -- BUT A COP-OUT END.......2004-03-20

This is a shorter book than the three previous ones in the on-going series about politics in the United States and almost un-put-downable. Somewhere along the line either Drury himself learned -- or a Kindly Editor had some grouchy words with him to impel him to learn -- to eliminate the dozens, even hundreds, of pages of inconsequential "human interest" and family chitchat that had so severely marred the narrative flow of the earlier books, particularly the second one, "A Shade of Difference."

Here the action is practically non-stop from the first page through the final paragraph on the last page. As in "Capable of Honor" the narrative tension builds and builds and builds. And as in "Advise and Consent" there are some genuine surprises along the way.

One of the major surprises is that the conservative Drury, who has been fiercely cudgeling the liberal media and all their dupes in the second and third books, evidently believes in Redemption. Two of the liberal boogeymen of the earlier books, Bob Leffingwell and Justice Tommy Davis, redeem themselves in surprising ways and now, apparently, have become Good Guys in the ongoing Drury narrative. What they'll be up to in the two final books in the series I'll be curious to see....

One great plus for this book: like the third one, it is absolutely uncanny how it foretells both the assassinations of 1968 that so enflamed the country at the time and the riotous Democratic convention in Chicago that year. This book was written from July 1967 through April 1968 -- Drury must have had a well-functioning crystal ball.

One great minus for this book: Drury is now clearly writing melodrama ("a work characterized by extravagant theatricality and by the predominance of plot and physical action over characterization") rather than drama ("a composition in verse or prose intended to portray life or character or to tell a story usu. involving conflicts and emotions, through action and dialogue"). There's nothing intrinsically wrong with melodrama (and 1968, for instance, really *was* a melodramatic year in the history of the Republic), but here Drury cranks the level up a little higher than I think it should be.

The ending, which I won't reveal to you, comes as a surprising shock and is intended clearly to open the way to the next book. And the way that Drury *deals* with the ending is pure melodrama -- he is only interested in getting the reader to buy the next book to find out just what the hell is going on here.

He should have been writing scripts for the cliff-hanger endings of the old Western serials....

All in all, a 4-star effort. It would have been a clear 5-star except for the ending.

4 out of 5 stars While not quite as good. . ........2001-12-27

. . .as the three novels which preceded it (some of the events are just too predictable) "Preserve and Protect" remains an outstanding novel about the operation of violence in the American political scene.

In this, the fourth novel in the "Advise and Consent" series, Allen Drury addresses a less tangible subject than in the first three. While "Advise and Consent" dealt with the Senate, and "A Shade of Difference" dealt with racism and the United Nations, and "Capable of Honor" dealt with the newsmedia, the theme for "Preserve and Protect" is violence. The novel picks up just where "Capable of Honor" left off -- and runs non-stop. The newly renominated President Hudson has been killed -- and Governor Jason and Senator Knox are going toe-to-toe for the new nomination.

The ending of this novel is quite surprising, and leads to the last two novels in the series.

As with the entire "Advise and Consent" series, there are many familiar characters, a few new faces, and in-depth background behind a few.

Again, as with the entire series, this book should be required reading in high-school civics.

While possibly a bit dated in some of its references, this novel is a spot-on condemnation of attitudes and prejudices found TO THIS DAY in the major media outlets, as well as dangerous attitudes held by certain persons in the political classes. If you're a self described "Liberal", this book may raise your blood pressure! :-)

This book is quite easy to read and has a format that will give you just about every scenerio you might encounter. As tax laws are always changing, be sure to consult an estate planning attorney on the current laws, but this will give you a good workable understanding of the whole process.

Somewhat outdated in its references to the applicable exclusion amount and the capital gains treatment of personal residences, which were changed by the 1997 federal tax reform act. But still the most comprehensive "plain language" guide to estate and inheritance planning. The information it provides may not apply to every will and trust in every state, but it will give laymen plenty of questions to ask their lawyers when they go in to start the estate planning process.

From the halls of California’s State Capitol to the Oval Office in the White House, Edwin Meese III was Ronald Reagan’s most trusted aide. Raised in a devout family steeped in public service, Meese has always answered the call. His contributions to Constitutional law, criminal justice, and public policy have left an unparalleled legacy in a career spanning nearly five decades. This book tells the life story of this accomplished American, principled conservative, and devoted husband and father.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A gem of a book!.......2005-05-25

Engrossing and easy to read, this deceptively slim volume breaks new ground revealing insights into the watershed moments of Ronald Reagan's political career by focusing on his closest, most intimate advisor, Ed Meese. For more than two decades, Meese steadfastly stood at the innermost core of Reagan's inner circle. Once asked who he would lean on in a crisis, Reagan immediately said: "Ed Meese."

Author Lee Edwards has done us all a great favor, not only by telling this story, but by getting people to talk who normally don't. Edwards has a unique ability in this respect, having been at the center of the conservative movement for more than thirty years, and he delivers.

We learn, for example, Meese's crucial role in literally saving the Reagan presidency by stepping into the breach of the Iran initiative and discovering the Contra diversion, then making it public immediately. We get an insider's look at critical decisions that now seem obvious -- like whether candidate Reagan should debate President Jimmy Carter (he did and cinched a landslide).

Most important, though likely to be the least heralded, is the compelling portrait Edwards paints of a life well lived and of an authentic public servant -- in the truest and noblest sense. From his youth to the present, Ed Meese's journey is chronicled with precision and poignancy from humble origins to the peak of power. And, perhaps the most stunning revelation of all to observers of today's political climate and to those who remember the vitriolic assault against Meese in the 1980s, is the genuine kindness and humbleness of heart that emerges from these pages.

Anyone passionate about conservative ideas, anyone interested in Reagan, anyone contemplating service in the public arena should read this fine book. Here is an example, as Reagan himself might have paraphrased, of a shining man on a hill. Learn about him, learn about yourself.
