Excellent autobiography of an American visionary.......2004-04-02

Read how Avis beat Hertz in the rental car game. No, they weren't bigger. Remember, "We're number 2, so we try harder." But they were the first to move into the airports, and dominated that space long enough to become an institution in the rental car field.

Warren Avis was successful in many other businesses. His sound thinking and fearless risk taking helped him in each endeavor.

Good amount of information for non-specialist.......2005-03-02

Coming from a non-finance background, I was pleased with the amount of information that I found in the book. If the information in this book were joined with some case studies or a semester long assignment in creating a financing package for a mock energy project, it would be appropriate classwork for a top MBA program.

One obvious complaint, assuming that the book is not directed at seasoned financial engineers who are already rolling in money, the price is a bit steep for those seeking money for projects in developing countries. A less expensive alternative is to go to the World Bank web site and search for the author's name. There you can find a 300 slide powerpoint display of the book's "highlights". Personally, because of the book's portability and text that expands upon the "highlights" , I thought that the book was worth the price.

To address the issue raised by my peer Amazon book critic as to what actually happens when a project's financial engineers sit down with a country's finance minister and a World Bank loan assessment team behind closed doors, I agree that those chapters are missing. So, if I were like him/her and already adept at financial engineering, I think that I would skip this book and start writing my own entitled "Advanced Financial Engineering for Energy Projects in Emerging Economies".

If someone does write a more advanced book on this subject, I would buy a copy (even at an inflated price) in a heartbeat. Others might also, as this book by Razavi is rapidly becoming dated and the energy crisis in developing countries is just beginning.

Disappointing.......1998-10-02

The title held great promise, but as a practitioner with over 18 years experience in power projects and project finance deals both at home and in some pretty difficult countries, this book was a let down. It approaches the subject from a theoretical point of view and it is clear that the author has little first hand experience in negotiating and closing deals.

ET Jaynes revolutionized our understanding of equilibrium statistical mechanics, in his famous 1957 Phys Rev papers reprinted in this volume. What makes this collection of his papers such a treasure trove is one sees the evolution of his thinking on non-equilibrium statistical dynamics, culminating in a deep, profound chapter 14 on the minimum entropy production principle.

A fresh look at the foundation of statistical mechanics.......1998-10-06

Jaynes's approach to statistical mechanics is so simple and convincing you won't be needing ergodic theory anymore to justify ensamble avrages after you'll finish this book. after making his contribution to statistical mechanics Jaynes turns to probability theory and attacks the (usual) random variable approach, claiming a new basis for probability theory is both avaliable and needed . I recomend to start reading this book with the article from the brandis lecture and than to proceed to the article "where do we stand on maximum entropy" where jaynes wittily answers the criticism raised upon his analysis of the "dice problem" (presented in the brandis lecture). A true classic for anyone interested in statistical physics and probability theory.
