4 out of 5 stars Brad is a great lecturer; you can feel it reading the book........2000-02-06

Brad's book is strong on concepts and illustrations. The book is well-written and reads like Aesop's fables, i.e. Brad tells you a story and you walk away with the idea. I wish Prof. Cornell could add an audio version of this book. Very few people can explain complicated financial economic concepts as well as Brad can. An audio version of this book can make more people enjoy Brad's lecturing talent, while absorbing the gist of corporate valuation sketched in this book. That's right, sketched ... :-)

4 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about ERP but..........1999-10-19

A great summary on the conventional wisdom about the equity risk premium. It covers -and combine- theory and evidence in a very reasonable balance. A couple of warnings. First, it puts the same emphasis on several alternative explanations, not always comparing and weighting them. Second, the book has some typos being probably the most important that of page 103 (equation 3.2). Nevertheless, a must have for every finance practitioner.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Defense of the Gospels and the LCMS Heritage.......2006-01-01

This synopsis may not be as thorough or eloquent as some of the other reviews, but I wanted to voice my appreciation for Mr. Parton's work in this book.

It seemed to me that this book can be divided into two major categories. One is a critique exposing the differences between Evangelicalism and Lutheran theology. The second is the defense of both the Gospel writings and the resurrection of Christ.

I enjoyed the meticulous dissection of the differences between the two theologies and worship styles. He helped me to appreciate the reverence, intellectual thought, confession of sins, and liturgical meaning of the LCMS church. I have attended many, many services at these Evangelical churches - and even though they may have more up-beat and energetic services, most have lost the reverence and the inclusion of the Law that is so very needed. These services and sermons tend to focus on the theme "Don't worry, be happy" (and clap along). Not all of them are like this, but too many seem to be.

I also very much enjoyed the Christian apology that Mr. Parton put forth. Even though he builds a number of cases for defending the Gospels and then the resurrection (and does a good job doing so), he notes that it certainly isn't 'water-tight' or 'bullet-proof', but then links this to our legal system where even a man sentenced to capital punishment doesn't necessarily have to have ABSOLUTE proof of his crime presented at the trial. But this is what biblical skeptics seem to require!

Overall I thought it a very good book defending the Lutheran (LCMS) theology and liturgy.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2004-01-18

This is a refreshing book that explains the confessional Lutheran heritage. Parton draws the reader into the greater picture of Christendom and shows how the rest of Christianity urgently needs the courageous confession of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ that Lutheranism has always been built on. Vividly and with strong emotion, Parton describes to the reader how he and his family found their way to Lutheranism from Evangelicalism. He shows how his search for a Christ-centered church led him to Lutheranism (to his own surprise), where he found Jesus Christ crucified at the center of the church's "prayed, spoken, and sung confession." Beautifully he describes his family's first encounter with the historic liturgy, while leaving Evangelicalism, and how stunned they were by the profoundness and reverence of the liturgy they found in the church of the Reformation. Throughout the book Parton's discussion of Lutheran liturgy and confession give the reader a thorough appreciation of the Lutheran heritage. He shows how we are, and need to remain a church that gives solid testimony to the Biblical Gospel of Jesus Christ-for the sake of an unbelieving world, for the sake of the increasingly shallow American Christianity, and for our own sake.

Parton also presents a "powerful critique of American Christianity" and shows why we need to undertake the apologetical and Biblical task to "contend for the faith" (Jude 3). He shows how the thoroughly Scriptural focus of the Lutheran confessions-as written in the Book of Concord-and our Christ-centered approach to theology and life, make the Lutheran Church perfectly fit for engaging in this task. We draw the essential distinction between Law and Gospel that is almost universally lacking in American Christianity, and we make clear that conversion is worked by the Holy Spirit. In other words we understand that we do nothing to accomplish our own salvation. Parton addresses many of the concerns raised by those within the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) who feel that apologetics (and specifically evidential apologetics) have no place in Lutheran theology. He shows how apologetics, properly used, does not claim to work conversion, but removes stumbling blocks that prevent many from even giving consideration to the Gospel. A brief treatment of such apologetics is presented in the book.

Another essential distinction drawn in Lutheranism is that reason functions in both kingdoms, but that in the Kingdom of God it functions ministerially (by serving), not majesterially (by judging/ruling). Here again is ample justification for why Lutheranism is apt for apologetics. We know that mankind's reason is never to be put in judgment over the Scriptures, and thus we avoid the rationalism that destroys the sacraments and other truths of Scripture. Parton draws attention to several points in the New Testament where the apostles and evangelists specifically contended for the faith by pointing to the evidence for the truth claims of Christianity. They were so convinced of the factuality of Christ's death and resurrection, that the apostle Paul was "so bold as to hinge the case for Christianity explicitly, and entirely, on the facticity of the Resurrection." Indeed we today ought likewise to confess and defend the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as a real event that took place in history, not just some metaphorical story. For this Good News is the reason for the existence of the church and the forgiveness and eternal life that we receive.

If you are questioning, or have questions about the liturgy, our confessions, or about the use of apologetics in the church, I highly recommend this book for your consideration. It is also a book that I would readily give to a fellow Christian who is questioning their faith or searching for a church with Christ-centered Biblical substance. The Defense Never Rests should also encourage us to take pride in the unique and faithful confession of Christ that our church has given historically, and must continue to give. To that end, to God alone be the glory!

5 out of 5 stars Relevant for Students in Need of Clear Answers.......2003-10-16

As a student in a secular college, I have found this book to be relevant to the topics presented by my history and philosophy professors. It is a good starting point for people who want an understanding of the historical claims of Christianity. The author provides an excellent appendix for further study.

Presently, many Christian authors and leaders are addressing the problems of "American" Christianity--a brand of Christianity that seems to have become more like the world and has lost confidence in the authority and historicity of the Bible. The tendency of these authors is to point fingers or grasp at the newest idea. Mr. Parton's book, however, captures the struggle many of us feel about the need for change and he emphasizes the power that existed during the Reformation.

This is a must for any student or religious scholar wanting clear answers about Christianity.

      5 out of 5 stars Firm Foundation.......2003-08-21

Mr. Parton relates his journey along the path of Christian Evangelicalism to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (not to be confused with the ELCA). What he finds there and why it is important are presented with the thoughtfulness of an attorney and the humility of a man of faith. There is wonder, awe and clarity in his writing, all rare and refreshing. Mr. Parton does not demean the practioners of other denominations but points to the strengths of the LCMS and how it has reinforced his faith and his personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Any Christian searching for direction will benefit by reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Look at the State of American Christianity.......2003-07-24

Parton is well informed Christian who has journeyed from a staffer on Campus Crusade to Lutheranism, and is now utterly amazed and upset that he finds much of Lutheranism trying to imitate Evangelicalism.

This book documents that journey as well as puts forward Christian apologetics which is so needed in our pluralistic and postmodern times. I found the separation into tough-minded and tender-minded apologetical approaches helpful and insightful. The Christian Church certainly needs to reclaim and make full use of the arts which God has so graciously bestowed upon it, and recently have been abandoned or culturalized popularly in the church. Parton correctly sizes up the substance vs. style debate.

Also included is an excellent Addendum on Historic Liturgy as well as an excellent annotated bibliography for further study and extensive endnotes.

      To be widely read.

4 out of 5 stars Informative but somewhat outdated.......2004-07-28

This book, written in 1971 by F. Lee Bailey, is an account of several of his early cases. Although some of the subject matter (especially his insights on the death penalty in Massachusetts - a state that no longer has a death penalty) is somewhat outdated, I recommend this book to anyone out there who "thinks" that they know how the adjucdication process works. The book has great educational value for any and all students of Crime, Law and Criminal Justice.

Bailey was the first person to smash (in writing) the "Perry Mason-myths" that many people seem to share about the role of the defense attorney in the courtroom. He makes clear that in the American court system, the thing that is of *least* concern is whether or not a person is innocent. Details taken from his case files seem to confirm that the almighty spectre of politics is at the forefront of any courtroom processes. Police and DA's are concerned with pleasing the public and giving the appearance that they have cleared certain crimes. Bailey is about as subtle as a punch in the nose.

I also recommend this book for anyone interested in the workings and history of polygraph tests. Bailey explains the so-called "lie detector" process very well.

5 out of 5 stars Checkpoint in his Career.......2002-07-26

I first heard of F. Lee Bailey in 1964 when he got Dr. Sam Shepard freed from a crime he didn't commit. Shepard was railroaded by a sensational and irresponsible newspaper; his life was ruined to sell advertising. Were things different 40 years later? This book tells of some of his cases, and his observations on the law.

Part I "The Torso Murder" tells of finding body parts, and the trial of the husband. There was no direct evidence against the husband; only the claim of a hobbyist polygrapher that the husband failed the "lie detector". Bailey's examination and comments are printed. A former business associate of the wife saw her weeks after she disappeared. The book tells of the tricks to discredit the witness: the police officer testified his story was false! But they contacted the priest who had accompanied this witness, and who verified the story. The defendant was acquitted. The next chapter tells of a defendant arrested on eyewitness identification years after the crime. The defendant did not match the description given by the victims. Eyewitness identifications are the greatest single cause of wrongful convictions. They were reliable in olden times when an eyewitness generally knew well the accused.

Part II reports "The Exoneration of Sam Shepard". This is so well known that nothing more needs to be said. Dr. Shepard's career was ruined and his life was crippled through false charges, poor investigation, and newspaper propaganda. Part III reports the Great Plymouth Mail Robbery: a million and a half in small bills were stolen from an ordinary mail truck. This crime was never solved, the money never recovered. Two of the suspects disappeared and were never found; possibly kidnapped and tortured to death by criminals. These chapters tell of the actions of the Postal Inspectors; these are facts, not fiction.

Part IV deals with the Boston Strangler and the solution to this case. It is a well known case where books have been written about it. Part V deals with the trials of Dr. Carl Coppolino. Tried in NJ for murdering a neighbor (not guilty), but convicted in FL for poisoning his wife. Bailey points out the weaknesses in the expert opinion against his client.

Part VI deals with corruption in Paterson NJ. A newspaper publisher who reported on links between underworld elements and the Passaic County Prosecutor was arrested for murder based on suborned perjury! This fact did not prevent two trials and acquittal in both cases. Bailey's appeal to the NJ Governor and others was used to censure him in MA and suspend him in NJ. Does NJ have the worst reputation in the eastern US? Read this chapter and you will understand why.

Part VII deals with "The State of the Law". It tells of the harm done by police lineups (if the victim is shown a mug shot before), the unreliability of eyewitness testimony (someone seen for a few seconds), etc. Innocence is irrelevant for any defendant! Anyone acquitted will forever be suspected as guilty. Bailey tells of the faults of the grand jury system: they are a rubber stamp for the prosecutor. This chapter gives an insider's view to things that are unknown to the public. This last chapter could be a summary of the book.

5 out of 5 stars An Enthralling Read -- Crafted By a Brilliant Strategist.......2000-06-09

My copy is dog eared from so many readings. This book inspired my teenage son to pursue a career in law. Highest praise for F. Lee Bailey.

      5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant insight to a brilliant mind.......2000-01-06

      F. Lee Bailey is as much a part of our history as were the clients he represented. This in-depth look at the thought process and strategy behind the courtroom drama that flooded millions of our TV screens in the 60s & 70s, reads better than some of the best selling John Grisham fiction Novels of today. Bailey's brave & cutting edge style of Legal defense unfolds in this book, and I found myself reading on & on with anticipation & excitement even though I already knew the outcome of most of the cases. Hats off to Mr. Bailey & may something be learned from him by everyone.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting if you can see the book around his big head........1999-05-27

The Defense Never Rests is an interesting view into the career of one of the most famous lawyers in the United States. From O.J. Simpson to Sam Sheppard (sp?), F. Lee Bailey has been at the forefront of many famous and infamous trials.

Unfortunately what would have been a nice snapshot and insight into a legal career, the book is marred by Bailey's ego. In the cases that he won, he says it was a triumph of justice. Those he lost were when the legal system failed. Hmm...

You often get the impression when reading through the cases in the book that he writes what he wishes he would have said in those situations. I find it hard to believe that someone can make every comment or quotation perfect as he says throughout the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has a particular interest in law, but only someone with a strong stomach. Some of Bailey's cases are genuinely interesting, but many are just self-inflated ego trips.

Field studies were performed in two successive years, 2002 and 2003, in two olive groves, one under organic farming and the other under integrated protection. The integrated protection grove was sprayed once a year in June, with dimethoate, to control the anthophagous generation of the olive moth, Prays oleae (Bern.). From April to November of each year, the canopy arthropods were sampled weekly. PRC method was used to analyse the effect of management regime at the community level and results showed that taxa responded differently to insecticide application suggesting that the organic grove was a more suitable habitat for the arthropods than the integrated protection grove. Abundance of arthropods peaked in May and June for both years but, after spraying with dimethoate, decreased significantly in integrated protection grove, recovering very slowly thereafter. Psocoptera, Miridae, Formicidae and Coccinellidae were the most sensitive taxa to insecticide application. Their decreasing in abundance was more evident in the second year of the trial. On the other hand chrysopids showed some tolerance to insecticide applications. These results suggest that the timing of spray is of utmost importance in reducing the side effects of spraying on beneficial arthropods. Moreover, differences in population susceptibility as well as in life cycle patterns must be considered.

                            Book Description

This book introduces a novel synthetic paradigm of public health reasoning and epidemic modelling, and then implements it in the study of the infamous 14 th century AD Black Death disaster that killed at least one-fourth of the European population.

The book starts by focusing on the intellectual context in which epidemic research takes place, in a way that accounts for the interdisciplinary and multicultural trends of the emerging Conceptual Age. The authors maintain that for public health scientists to function in an often complex environment, they should be aware of the divergent conceptions of knowledge and the technological changes that these imply, the multiple and often uncertain databases available and their reliability, the different styles of thinking adopted by the disciplines involved, and the importance of developing sound interdisciplinary knowledge integration skills. A unique feature of the book is that it takes the reader through all four major phases of interdisciplinary inquiry: adequate conceptualization (in terms of metaphors, methodological principles, epistemic rules, and argumentation modes), rigorous formulation (involving sophisticated mathematical models), substantive interpretation (in terms of correspondence principles between form and meaning), and innovative implementation (using advanced systems technology and multi-sourced real world databases). This approach is then applied to scientifically advance the spatiotemporal characterization of the Black Death epidemic, thus going beyond the sensationalistic narration of events found in other publications.

The book includes the most complete collection of interdisciplinary information sources available about the Black Death epidemic, each one systematically documented, tabulated, and analyzed. It also presents, for the first time, a series of detailed space-time maps of Black Death mortality, infected area propagation, and epidemic centroid paths throughout the 14 th century AD Europe. Preparation of the maps took into account the uncertain nature of the data and integrated a variety of interdisciplinary knowledge bases about the devastating epidemic. These maps provide researchers and the interested public with an informative and substantive description of the Black Death dynamics (temporal evolution, local and global geographical patterns, etc.), and can help one discover an underlying coherence in disease distribution that was buried within reams of contemporary evidence that had so far defied quantitative understanding. The book carefully analyzes the findings of synthetic space-time modelling that enlighten considerably the long-lasting controversy about the nature and origins of the Black Death epidemic. Comparisons are made between the spatiotemporal characteristics of Black Death and bubonic plague, thus contributing to the debate concerning the Black Death etiology. Since Black Death had grave societal, public health, and financial effects, its rigorous study can offer valuable insight into these effects, as well as into similar effects that could result from potential contemporary epidemics.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and important contribution to Black Death scholarship.......2006-08-22

This is one of the most important books to have been published on the epidemiology of the Black Death.

George Christakos and his colleagues have put their considerable public health modelling expertise to use in mapping the Black Death through space and time. Previous maps of the epidemic - from those of Carpentier (1962) to Benedictow (2004) - have achieved only a general sense of the movement of this, the most lethal epidemic Europe has ever experienced. Christakos et al. still face the same fundamental problem that has hamstrung these earlier historians and demographers: medieval sources being what they are, it is impossible to obtain consistent data on the presence of plague in any one place at a verifiable time, leading to a view of the spread of the disease that is impressionistic at best. For Christakos et al., however, the unknown and the uncertain is not a problem but a positive virtue. By employing advanced stochastic modelling techniques, which allow for the unreliability of medieval sources and the vagaries of epidemic disease, Christakos et al. have been able to reconstruct the epidemiology of the Black Death with a breath-taking level of detail. Instead of the unrealistic `waves' of epidemic disease that we have been given before, we are now presented with a far more human pandemic. Pestilence spreads out from loci forming the nodes of the medieval transport network. The disease travels up roads and along waterways. It hops from port to port and then makes its inevitable progress inland. It is altogether a more convincing picture of the Black Death and one that fits far better with what contemporaries stated they had seen. In so doing, Christakos et al. confirm the view that the Pestilence had nothing to do with rats and fleas and was most likely a pathogen that passed directly between people.

This is a scholarly book and much of it is devoted to the mathematics that underpin the model itself. Its audience will include epidemiologists and students of stochastics as well as medical and medieval historians. Christakos' ability to encompass such diverse disciplines is impressive. He and his team should be forgiven the very occasional slip on medieval history as their overall interpretation has added so considerably to how we view the pandemic. Historians for too long have been poor interpreters of the science of pestilence and plague. In helping to correct these errors, Christakos has demonstrated the rich contribution that interdisciplinary research has to make to historical debates, a contribution that historians would do well to welcome.

                                Book Description

Mileva Maric was a remarkable woman by any measure. One of the first women to study physics at a European university, she met and fell in love with a young physicist whose revolutionary theories would shortly transform our understanding of the universe. Mileva's marriage to Albert Einstein and the birth of their three children (the first, Lieserl, was born before the two were married) derailed her career as a physicist. Ensuing marital difficulties also threw Mileva into a severe depression for years after she and Albert separated in 1916 and divorced three years later. The subject of much speculation on the part of Einstein biographers, Mileva's life has remained shrouded in mystery and half-truth.

In Albert's Shadow, a treasure trove of seventy previously unpublished letters and cards written by Mileva to Helene Savic, an intimate friend from her university days, brings Mileva's life and marriage into focus more sharply than ever before. Edited and introduced by Helene Savic's grandson, Milan Popovic, this revealing and often touching epistolatary biography offers a new and less-than-flattering perspective on the private life of Albert Einstein and provides a compelling portrait of a supportive and brilliant woman whose world-famous husband betrayed her deep affections. Deftly placed into their biographical and historical context by Popovic, these letters draw an intriguing picture of intellectual life in Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Through Mileva's letters -- and the notes Albert appended to them -- Popovic charts the course of Mileva's life and her relationship with Albert, from their happy years through their divorce and to Mileva's troubled life after Albert. Mileva's letters describe their mutual infatuation; her strained relations with Albert's parents, who opposed the marriage; and her experiences at university. Shortly after their marriage in 1903, Mileva slowly comes to realize that science has a greater hold on Albert's attention than she does, and her tragic letters to Helene after 1909 lay bare her anguish at his growing distance (a situation made worse by Albert's secret affair with his cousin Elsa). After the divorce, Mileva's letters chronicle the depression with which she struggled for the rest of her life, and describe the lives of her and Albert's two surviving children, the youngest of whom, Eduard, had developed schizophrenia. The letters end in 1940 with Europe at war. Although Helene Savic died four years later, the correspondence she and her family preserved now offer unprecedented insights into the life of the twentieth century's greatest mind and the tragic story of his tormented first wife.

3 out of 5 stars Francis Macomber: Americans beware.......1999-10-22

With the encouraging success of the recent box-office smash, American Beauty, I believe props need to be given to whom their due: Ernest Hemingway. No, he was not involved in the actual movie, but I could not help but notice the similarities between the movie and the "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," which also happens to be my favorite Hemingway short. Americans feel alone and without control of their own lives in the late 20th century, and as Hemingway proves in this strong story, Americans have been feeling this way for a long time. Short and to the point, "Macomber" delivers a one-two punch that cannot be forgotten. Get up and take control of your own life; just make sure you're aware of what you're entering the bush in chase of.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful, one of the best books I have ever read........1999-02-19

I loved the book and the movie. It just reminded me of Key West, which I love, and it gave me a comforting and happy feeling all the way through. It is incredible the way the old man never gives up with his courage to fight the big fish. The ending was perfect when he finds security in his hut and with the little boy. He sure deserved it.

                                4 out of 5 stars Macomber-riffic!.......2001-02-03

The key to understanding Hemingway's work is to view it as a broad allegory on the sociopolitical environment in which he lived and wrote. On a purely literal level, one could view "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" as a campy yet endearing story of one man's search for the perfect ski slope (Kilimanjaro) or the perfect hunting trip(Macomber). But if you look at the mountain as, say, the U.S. economy and the elephant as, say, the gold standard and Francis' wife as, say, the War Powers Act, the story takes on an entirely different meaning. And the ancient sherpa's diatribe on the Securities Exchange Commission becomes an extremely poignant and brilliantly crafted fulcrum on which to balance the story's central metaphor.

                                    Book Description

In THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO the protagonist perishes of gangrene alone out in the bush, recognizing his failure as a writer: a writer who never had the nerve to write. He dies with stoic acceptance and a view of the famous summit unseen by any alive.

In THE SHORT HAPPY LIFE OF FRANCIS MACOMBER, Francis is too wimpy to face down a wounded lion, let alone satisfy his wife in bed. As always, Hemingway's characters speak of his own self-perceived failures and fears. As often, Hemingway speaks for us all.

"Some of the best short stories written in this century." (New York Herald-Tribune)
