Although many businesspeople may not yet be familiar with Dave Longaberger and the hugely successful basket company that bears his name, they probably should be. The story of the man and his enterprise, as told in Longaberger: An American Success Story, is as informative and inspiring as any likely to pass their way. In fact, this plainspoken memoir--prepared with business writer Robert Shook shortly before Longaberger's death from cancer in 1999--ought to be required for all entrepreneurs who think they really know what makes the business world go round.
In its pages, Longaberger candidly relates how he first learned to share and do his part as one of 12 children in a small house in tiny Dresden, Ohio--and how seemingly major drawbacks like epilepsy, stuttering, learning disabilities, and lack of a college education never deterred him. He tells how he kicked off his entrepreneurial career with a restaurant and grocery-drugstore before opening the basket company in 1973 as a part-time family affair, and how its workforce ultimately grew to 8,000 while revenues hit $1 billion. Longaberger fully explains overcoming his difficulties and learning the real secrets of business by shoveling snow and toiling in a grocery store as a youngster, and then selling baked goods and working in a factory as a young man. He also shows how this knowledge, and his penchant for the unconventional, became invaluable when he went into business for himself. The story includes Longaberger's rationale for the moves he parlayed into success, and offers his specific management principles along with advice on how and why to implement them. At its heart, though, Longaberger's message is deceptively simple. "If you remember nothing else about this book," he writes, "I hope you realize that if a small-town boy like me can make it, anyone in America who's willing to work hard should be able to earn a darn good living." --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Dave Longaberger was one of the most remarkable entrepreneurs of his generation. His vision, his unorthodox business methods, and his belief in people resulted in the creation of one of the largest and most successful private companies in America.
Longaberger: An American Success Story is Dave's fascinating firsthand account of how he created and grew his company into the largest basket manufacturer in the United States, employing thousands of people, revitalizing his community, and inspiring everyone involved with a commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and a unique management philosophy.
As Dave himself admits in this moving and compelling memoir, he was an unlikely success story. In addition to having epilepsy and a stutter, Dave suffered from a learning disorder, finally graduating high school at the age of twenty-one. Yet, he ran two profitable businesses, a restaurant and a grocery store -- which, to the horror of bankers and friends, he then sold in order to finance his struggling basket company.
Dave was a business maverick who only let adversities make him stronger and more versatile. He became renowned for his managerial skills -- and his sense of humor. More than once he started a food fight at a company event or launched a wild idea -- like the basket-shaped headquarters building -- that just happened to work perfectly.
This engaging story shows how Dave Longaberger shared his life and unconventional business sense to create what is now the $1 billion-in-sales Longaberger Company. Join him on his journey as he takes his own unique route to success. Learn about the many original and highly unusual management practices that not only contributed to the strength of the Longaberger enterprise but can make any business run more profitably. Follow Dave's example and develop the entrepreneurial skills necessary for business success.
Longaberger: An American Success Story is an affirmation of the American values of independence, hard work, and business ethics. Inspirational as well as informative, this is a moving portrait of an enterprise and an entrepreneur, both of whom are loved and revered by the thousands of people whose lives they have enriched.
About The Longaberger Company
From a bare-bones beginning with a handful of part-time employees in 1972, Longaberger today, under the leadership of president and CEO Tami Longaberger, employs some 8,700 people and inspires some 70,000 independent sales associates across the United States. The Longaberger Company has a sprawling campus of office facilities, production plants where basket makers create more than 40,000 high-quality baskets every day, and tourist attractions in and around central Ohio.

Not A Very Helpful Book!.......2004-05-28
As stated by another reviewer, this is a book for "Longaberger fans" (pretty much a waste of time and money for anybody else). The wholesome, made-in America image that the Longaberger family is trying to convey seems ironic to me now, since the company is outsourcing a large amount of their products in China. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone except the die-hard Longaberger enthusiast!
Have you ever had a dream that was draining you dry?.......2003-04-08
That was Mr.Longaberger's problem. He knew that handcrafted baskets had a place in Americana, but he didn't know how to make it profitable. But he never gave up. While it was running in the red, he was taking money from his business that was running in the black.
Those entrepreneurs that are working full time jobs, as well, know the feeling.
I picked up this book to gain perspective on how to not get discouraged in my own business. It worked.
I have never had to work in a building that had no roof. I have never had to pay employees with IOUs. I have never had to go into a store and see my handmade baskets tossed in the back of a shelf collecting dusts while cheaper made, inferior baskets go whizzing by.
What I took away from this book is to constantly persist and innovate. The cliche "Where there is a will there is a way" readily applied to Mr.Longaberger. He gained my utmost admiration as a businessman and as a philanthroper.
From day one he shared is wealth, with his employees, with his community, and with strangers. I am shopping around to purchase one of his baskets, solely as an inspiration piece, and if you do the same, after reading this book, you will find out what I found out, they are expensive and you have stiff competition among the collectors. He created a $7billion company from an abandon building. Could you do the same.
Do you have what it takes to get through your hard times, up beat, to really see your business blossom? I do. I look forward to seeing you at the top.
Wonderful Business Tips If you are a real businessman.......2003-04-03
If a book's name is success story it will not be a business textbook to explain business strategy or corporate finance. In this book you can see the optimism (which we need right now), persuasion(every entreprenuer needs), and a soft touch to people ( key element to create successful business). So as you understand this book do not make you understand hard business issues but make you understand that the realization of dreams are not restricted to business educated people... It shows you a person who has learning disabilities can create a company of 1 billion dollar worth... it shows you the importance of caring customers and touching customers and caring their families...
So people who needs business books they need to go text books not success stories... ... if i need a screwdriver and if i get a hammer, hammer will be useless for me but this does not change the effectiveness of the hammer for the person who needs it... so only problem is the person who selects it...
thanks
This is not a business book.......2002-05-10
If you are looking for a book celebrating the life and times of David Longaberger, this is the book for you. If you are looking to learn more about how he built his businesses, look elsewhere. I was very disappointed in this book. Hindsight is supposed to be 20/20, not wear rose colored glasses.
I'm surprised at all the ultra positive reviews here for this book, but I guess they are all "Longaberger Fans". I enjoy reading about successfully business people and looked forward to reading about how Longaberger built his unique marketing method.
Ask any entrepreneur and they'll tell you that they learned far more from their failures than their successes. Either Dave Longaberger is the luckiest business person ever or he has really selective memory. The history of the Longaberger company and his earlier businesses is written as a series of successes with no discussion of any failures.
The working conditions of the early basket production were horrible. Unpaid employees working in a dilapidated building without even bathroom facilities. While this may sound like something out of the turn of the century, this OSHA nightmare happened in the mid 70's. Still, Longaberger writes lovingly about it recalling his "devoted" employees, even patting himself on the back for allowing these workers flexible time.
The "business tips" other reviewers have referred to are nothing new or interesting nor are the anecdotes on how practices like "listening to your employees" contributed to the success of the company.
After reading this book I do understand the cult-like following that Longaberger enjoys. The selective history, overly positive attitude, and constant emphasis on a team attitude that Longaberger runs his businesses with are very similar to methods used by religious and other cult leaders.
Longaberger - An American Success.......2002-01-24
This is such a great book. If owners and managers of companies had the same knowledge that Dave had with no college education, there would be a lot more people with better morale in the workplace. His techniques prove to be successful. This was a very touching book too. He went from nothing to something.

Book Description
This book introduces QFT for readers with no prior knowledge of the subject. It is meant to be a textbook for advanced undergraduate or beginning postgraduate students. The book discusses quantization of fields, S-matrix theory, Feynman diagrams, calculation of decay rates and cross sections, renormalization, symmetries and symmetry breaking. Some background material on classical field theory and group theory, needed for the exposition, are also presented in the book. Detailed calculations of weak and electromagnetic processes are included. There are many exercise problems to help the students, instructors and beginning researchers in the field. The second edition improves upon some notations and explanations, and includes answers to selected exercises.

Finally an "easy" book on QFT.......2006-11-25
I had to specially order this book but it was well worth it.
To start the authors presuppose only the standard undergraduate mathematical background. Readers adept in multi-variable calculus and linear algebra with applications to Special Relativity and introductory quantum mechanics will have no difficulty with the book.
The authors present the IDEAS of QFT and then elaborate adding detail in stages with worked examples.
They first introduce classical field theory and develop both the Langrangian and Hamiltonian concepts culminating in the principle of least action. Variational calculus techniques are employed to develop the standard euler langrange equations. Noether's theorem is introduced which roughly speaking, states that for each symmetry of the Langrangian one has a conserved quantity. For example space translation invariance leads to conservation of linear momentum and time symmetry leads to conservation of energy. Two types of symmetries are distinguished, namely internal and external. Lorentz transformations fall within the later category.
Quantization of the energy mass relation is shown to lead to the Klein-Gordon equation which has issues when intrepreted as a wavefunction equation.
We see how the general solution for the Klein-Gordon equation should be intrepreted as an operator equation ( so called second quantization ). This leads to a meaningful reintrepretation of the solution as a quantum field with spacetime acting as a way to label the operators. That is each spacetime point has an infinite collection of annihilation and creation operators ( 1 for each momentum ). Fock space, ground states and normal ordering issues are dealt with. The commutation relationships are explored.
Complex scalar fields are dealt with next with few changes but new phenomena of antiparticles.
The idea of a propagator is introduced namely the transition probability amplitude of the creation of a particle at a spacetime point and annihilation later. This is done using Green functions and then shown to be the same as the above transition amplitude. The importance of time ordering of operators is introduced.
The dirac equation and solutions and second quantization of this field is discussed as are the propogators. It is shown how the hamiltonian derived from the appropriate langrangian has negative energy issues which can only be dealt with by using anticommutation rules. This in turn implies the pauli exclusion principle. Thus the dirac field is suitable in describing spin 1/2 particles.
Thus far the book has dealt with free fields. Now comes the interesting part..interactions. The S matrix is defined and a perturbation expansion explained. Wick expansion is dealt with and we see how the terms in the wick expansion can be pictorially understood.. a natural segueway to Fenyman diagrams. Fenyman rules are introduced. We thus see how the S matrix elements which allow the calculation of transition probabilites between "input" and "output" states can be broken down using wick expansion to individual processes which can be drawn as Fenyman diagrams which can then be used to calculate the probability amplitudes using fenyman rules. This sounds complex but EACH STEP is explained with plenty of examples.
The authors then deal with quantizing the EM field and show how we run into problems unless...new idea here....we introduce gauge fixing. By now you should know what is coming. The field operators are derived as are the propogators and fenyman diagrams for the photon.
We are now ready for QED ( quantum electrodynamics ). It is shown how the langrangian describing the dirac field has a global symmetry. However, as every physics student knows this is not desired in SR which implies local symmetry ( finite speed of light ). Thus trying to make this langrangian have a local symmetry necessitates the introduction of another field....the EM field! This is another idea....called....gauging the global symmetry. Now the QED is applied to electron-positron and compton scattering.
Next the CPT discrete symmetries are dealt with as is renormalization.
The authors then introduce symmetry breaking. That is although the Langrangian may possess the symmetry the ground state may not. They show how symmetry breaking introduces massless particles called goldstone bosons in the case of global symmetries.. The requisite group theory is nicely introduced here. Local symmetries which undergo symmetry breaking are introduced and it is shown how the massless field disappears and how the gauge field terms acquire mass! This is the so called Higgs mechanism and has implications for electroweak theory.
The authors then tackle non-abelian symmetries ( Yang-Mills theories ) just touching on the need for "ghost" fields ( Fadeev Popov method) and Quantum chromodynamics. Briefly the Langrangian for the quarks is "gauged" which produces 8 gauge fields or gluons. There really is no detail here but the reader is inticed to explore more advanced texts.
Finally, electroweak theory is briefly outlined...again the reader is prepared for more advanced texts.
The mathematically mature student with a background in SR and non-relativistic QM will have no problem completing this book in a few months or less.
I would read this book before starting Peskin and Schroeder.
Learning QFT? Yes, you need this book........2006-05-25
This book is reminiscent of Mandl Shaw, another popular "easy" QFT book, but this one's better overall. Mandle Shaw starts out by throwing the Fourier decomposition of the field at you straight away instead of easing you into the subject, following the seeming physics authoring trend of containing an introduction that's only comprehensible once you've finished the book. (Do physics authors know what conclusions are for?) The Lahiri Pal introduction is very readable though, and technicality ramps up in a reasonable way. Also, the writing style of this book is very concise and entertaining. Some chapters read almost like mysteries, starting with puzzles that await solving--much better that the usual approach of meandering without any strategy the reader is aware of. I really like certain sections of Mandl Shaw, such as the explanation of QED Feynman diagrams in Ch. 7, but all in all Lahiri Pal is a much smoother intro to QFT, not because it's easier or dumbed down, but because it's just plain better. My favorite part is the awesome calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron in 11.3. Hopefully this excellent book's popularity will increase!
Terrific introduction to Quantum Field Theory.......2005-06-01
This is the textbook when I was learning QFT. I think this is one of the best books for introducing Quantum Field Theory at a postgraduate level. Starting with the reaon why people need QFT, the idea of second quantizaiton is introduced. Both boson and fermion fields are given in a very clear way, followed by Feynman diagrams, Wick's theorem etc. Decay rates and cross sections are calculated with many worked examples. Finally, the ideas of renormalization, symmetry and symmetry breaking, non-Abelian gauge field are included in its second part. The whole book is written in an easy-to-understand language. The important concepts are emphasized with examples. I feels very comfortable when reading this book. This book is not so deep, so if you want to know more about QFT, you need to read other books.
A very easy introduction.......2003-10-25
This is one of the excellent introductory books on quantum field theory. It has approximately the same style of Mandel's book but with a more clear presentation. The only missing thing in this book is that it does not have any path integral treatment of field theory but still covers a good part of the subject. I strongly recommend it for a bigenner.

In a literary anthology, a classic horror story.......1998-11-06
This anthology includes the complete novel "Dagon," something of a literary oddity. It's part of a subgenre of horror fiction known as the Cthulhu Mythos, which comprises stories that make use of supernatural elements found in the stories of H.P. Lovecraft--mostly having to do with evil godlike monsters (or monsterlike gods) that ruled the Earth before the dawn of time. "Dagon" takes this premise, twists the genre from supernatural horror to Southern gothic, and presents it with utter psychological realism. The result is shocking and fascinating--sort of like reading a horror comic book written by William Faulkner. I wonder what fans of Southern literature make of "Dagon"--there's a few bits that must be baffling if you've never heard of Lovecraft. But the rest of the book isn't like this at all, so don't be scared off if this doesn't sound like your cup of tea. This is surely the best-written Cthulhu story ever. But few Lovecraft fans will ever find it here, with a generic title and a cover completely devoid of squiggly monsters. (The novel, I should note, has no squiggly monsters either--on the surface. But they're there--oh, boy, are they there.)

Book Description
Boots on the Ground is a riveting account of the war in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division as it convoys north from Kuwait to Iraq's Tallil Air Base en route to night-and-day battles within the major city of Samawah and its nearby bridges across the Euphrates. Karl Zinsmeister, a frontline reporter who traveled with the 82nd, brilliantly conveys the careful planning and technical wizardry that go into today's warfare, even local firefights, and he brings to life the constant air-ground interactions that are the great innovation of modern precision combat. What exactly does it feel like to travel with a spirited body of fighting men? To come under fire? To cope with the battlefield stresses of sleep-deprivation, and field rations for weeks on end? Readers of this vivid day-to-day diary are left with not only a flashing sequence of strong mental images, but also a notion of the sounds and smells and physical sensations that make modern military action unforgettable.
Ultimately,
Boots on the Ground is a human story: a moving portrayal of the powerful bonds of affection, trust, fear, and dedication that bind real soldiers involved in battle. This is a true-life tale of superbly trained men in extraordinary circumstances, packed with concrete detail, often surpassing fiction for sheer drama.

good report by a kid.......2006-12-01
In the book Boots On The Ground the author tells about his month with the 82 Airborne. The author uses vivid examples about his experience in Iraq.
One of his experiences he tells about how he finds a half blown up kid on the ground. He tells a lot about the kid and how they brought him to safety. The author does a great job writing the story.

Book Review
Boots on the Ground
A Journal by: Karl Zinsmeister
Boots on the Ground is a great journal/ novel to read. It is written by Karl Zinsmeister who is a journalist who is sent to Iraq for a month to document the life of the 82nd Airborne in the Battle for Iraq. He lives in Madison County, New York. Karl has made many trips around the world for news stories but hadn't been to the war in Iraq yet. Now he has an opportunity to go for an interview with the 82nd Airborne division. He couldn't pass up the offer and was confident he'd return with a compelling story.
When Karl gets to Iraq everything is different than the way that he pictured it would be. His first task was to obtain a military uniform and armor in order to go into combat. He has to buy his equipment at some Iraqi stores. Karl went to the stores and bargained the best that he could in order to get his equipment. He got everything except for NOG (night vision goggles). Karl thought that he wouldn't need the night vision anyways, but he was wrong.
Karl gets into many small conflicts with the enemy and writes in his journal any time that he gets a chance to. He notices that after a while in Iraq, you just adapt to the way a soldier lives. It is difficult at first, but after a couple of weeks he gets the hang of things. Karl is always cautious about what he is going to do but he tries not to show it because others might make fun of him. Some reporters won't go on combat missions so he offers to take their places not knowing what serious situations lie ahead.
Karl is determined to get an awesome story. He wants to prove that he is a phenomenal reporter and show that he has the guts to take any assignment. Karl thinks that this will just be like all the other stories he has reported but he is extremely wrong. His first days of combat are terrible and nerve wracking. In this book Karl tells how the 82nd Airborne is fighting to keep the United States safe. He tells the courage and patriotism of these soldiers and how they are sacrificing their lives in order to protect us.
Boots on the Ground is a great book that tells about the heroes that are in Iraq. It is full of action and suspense. It shows what the men in Iraq are fighting for and why they are in the war. It shows the courage and honor that these men have for doing this for us. This book shows what life is like inside the battle zone. It is a book of patriotism and honor that keeps our men in Iraq fighting to keep us safe. It opens the doors to tell us why we are in Iraq and allows us to give respect to those in Iraq fighting for us. After you read this book, maybe you too will be able to recognize those brave men that are sacrificing themselves for us with their boots on the ground.
Hated It!!.......2005-08-07
When I first picked up this book I was beyond excited to read it. However, from almost the first page I was disappointed. Mr. Zinsmeister did an aweful job writing this book. Instead of focusing almost exclusively on the soldiers he decided to spend most of the book either discussing himself or his political views. I might have been willing to overlook his obvious conservative bias if he had bothered to accurately portray the otherside when he decided to debate how his view was correct. This whole book wasn't worth the paper it was written on.
bad, bad, bad, the 82nd Airborne deserves better .......2005-03-02
Boots on the Ground is a terrible book about the war in Iraq. The book is very short (although in this case it is a blessing) and offers no real insight into the war in Iraq. I found the book to be poorly written and it fails to capture the essence of these wonderful troops going to war. The author spends a lot of time complaining about the conditions he is suffering through and not enough time capturing what the soldiers experience. The 82nd Airborne is an elite army unit but he reduces them into cartoon characters instead of letting us relate to them as people. His continual attacks on the left were also a distraction, save that for another book. This book was obviously rushed to be printed instead of focusing on the quality of the story. Bottom line there are much better books out about the war in Iraq. Save your money and get Devil Dogs, or the March Up. Get anything, just not this book.
Vets Beware, the title is deceptive........2005-01-11
This is not really a book for anyone who knows anything about the military, and wants to get a grunts eye view of the early phase of the Iraq war. This book was written just before, during and immediatly after the invasion, "Major Combat," phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. That would be fine if the book was about military operations or the soldiers themselves. Unfortunately this book is 75% about the author,(editor of a small conservative magazine) his world outside Kuwait/Iraq, his (conservative) politics, and the hated(liberal) press. To make matters worse, his unrestrained "See I told you it would be a cakewalk, all you naysayers before the war are proven fools!" political views are embarrassingly outdated. Written at a time when U.S. forces had suffered 196 KIA, the author took the position, literally for the last fifty pages of the book, that the war was over as soon as he left Iraq. This book is only good for people studying modern American politics, not war or warriors. The Paratroopers of the 82nd deserve a better book. Save your time and your money.
Book Description
In a simple, straightforward manner, this book presents most of the major process units for wastewater treatment, addressing what the unit is and how it basically works. Along with that it provides some of the math problems associated with each unit. Each math problem, presented in English units, is usually followed by a nearly identical problem in metric units. It also presents new concepts, such as information on process microbiology, in a comfortable language so the reader can concentrate on the subject matter instead of the language used to present it. Simplified Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations provides comprehensive and technically accurate wastewater information in a clear and concise manner. The related workbook provides readers with a place to write in answers and work out problem solutions.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction For Wastewater Treatment Operations.......2000-08-11
This book provides a superb, easy to understand description of the step-by-step process of wastewater plants. The author clearly wrote this book for someone beginning in the field of environmental engineering (such as myself). All of today's main processes are discussed with examples and detailed sketches which allow you to really understand the operations without being lost in lots of high tech terminology. Chemical reactions are also explained very clearly so you can understand the reactions without being a PhD in chemistry. I highly recommend this book for envionmental engineering students and new engineers in the wastewater industry.

Excellent for the Scrapper's reference library!.......2007-05-31
Although I have been scrapping for a few years, I found this to be a valuable resource. Don't be fooled by the title... it's not just for beginners. The format of the book is simple with what I call "idea launch pads". The book gets you started when you feel stumped!

Great ideas.......2006-05-23
This book inspired me to finally organize my boxes and boxes of pictures. I have three kids, and all of the past 10 years of photos were in file boxes. I hadn't even put my wedding photos from 18 years ago in an album. This book helped me figure out some themes for albums and some completely new ways to embellish and enrich the pages. I even made each daughter her own scrapbook of baby pictures, complete with locks of hair, baby teeth and foot prints. They just love them.
Terrific book--Great addition to any scrapper's bookshelf.......2006-04-10
Rebecca and Jennifer have taken a lot of the stress out of learning to scrapbook. This book reads as though the two women are sitting next to you and gently guiding you along. Although I'm a seasoned scrapper, I found new ideas and new techniques I want to try. Best of all, the tone of the book was inspiring and helpful, which is exactly what a how to book should be.
Of all the many scrapbooking books I own, this is probably the most complete in terms of the areas covered. I picked up a great idea from the "Get Organized" section. The addition of computer tips was super--just enough without making it feel like you HAD to use your computer or you couldn't scrapbook. I also liked the section on mini and theme scrapbooks.
All in all, this book is a classic that deserves a place on every scrapbooker's bookshelf!
