    Book Description

Today's organisations, both large and small, are facing increasingly tough competition. Companies at the top of their field have no guarantees of continued, let alone future, success. Companies further down the food chain are increasingly likely to fall behind, contract, fail or be swallowed up. Increased market share, sustainable profits and strong organisational results have never been more important.

In The Competitive Enterprise, author Geoff Bell draws on the experience gained from running the major international quality awards- the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the European Foundation for Quality Management and the Australian Business Excellence Framework-to present 10 concise, sound and universal principles that will make a real difference and guarantee continued success.

He has done this because, though the awards point to what an organisation should look like, they do not explain how to put into practice the steps needed to get there, In simple terms, Geoff Bell fills the gap and presents and easy-to-understand and easy-to-implement plan for ensuring business success in 10 basic and integrated steps.

Clearly written and incorporating useful examples of good and bad practices, the book explains:
    The benefits of each principle
How each principle can be put into practice
How primary stakeholders (shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers and the community) might respond

3 out of 5 stars Need to look beyond this book.......2005-11-20

It was OK as far as it goes, but I was disappointed in that it was very outdated. Trading has so far advanced in speed and execution times by now. Maybe some of the different execution methods used to matter a few years back, but I am not sure now. Of course it depends on how "large" a trader you are, and how often.
I was actually looking for more descriptions on how to discern what is happening on Level 2, and the author touched on it too briefly, in my opinion. The hand-eye coordination needed to see what he describes is extremely limited in application on fast moving high volume stocks. His static descriptions (definitions, market makers, ECNs, etc) were pretty good. So much of that is available through other means, nowadays. As I said, it was the "interpretation" that was lacking, I felt.
The graphic examples in the book were mediocre, and don't match the screens I am using presently.
I neither short, nor buy on margin, and now I know better why not.
The most insightful discussion was about the so-called "hidden" orders which I suspected were there, and he firmed that up for me. Basically, what you see on Level II can't really be trusted, and using it for more than anything but entertainment is risky.
Many of the things in the book are limited by what one's online broker will do for you. No way could I trade a dozen times a day on the same stock as described.

      5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-10-23

This book I read with pencil and notebook. It definitely gave me perspective on the "live" trading. I think this is extremely comprehensive book, going from trading, to shorting, even touching on tax stuff. There are so many worthless books, but this one is a keeper in my library.

3 out of 5 stars Good but outdated.......2003-09-09

What's great about this book is that it rolls up its sleeves and gets right into the nuts and bolts of trading and the mechanics of what really goes on behind the scenes. Unfortunately that's also its drawback - the mechanics have all changed since it was written (in 2000). Although the book covers SuperSOES, SuperMontage, decimalization and other recent changes, these changes had not been rolled out at the time of writing. Thus about every other page carries a disclaimer that the information will change in the near future. That's a shame, because the book is very well written and informative. Sure hope an update is on the drawing board!

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Insight Into The Nasdaq Trader's Toolkit.......2003-04-16

Hereýs a solid read for the Nasdaq Level II curious. As the former head of MB Trading, Labier has built a career around electronic daytrading. Though a self-proclaimed fan of ýget richý books, this book offers a no-frills example-packed ride for the beginner.

Starting with the basics, everything you need to know about interpreting Level II is provided. If you have no idea what Level II is, thatýs covered as well. Slugging it out in the trenches with scalping strategies is nothing that comes easy for the untrained eye. Labier brings some clarity to the madness with the one goal of making a profitable trader.

Having the intricacies of the Level II screen ingrained in the mindset is a must for a Level II trader. This book is appropriately called a ýtoolkitý for the trader who uses all the information to his or her advantage. ýBuy low and sell highý is a start, but to really be good at this game, you need everything you can get your hands on to gain an advantage.

I found the strategies uncovered by Labier as to how market makers use deception to mislead a key feature in this book. It's not hard to see how a rookie trader gets eaten up by the big guys when maneuvering through Level IIýs electronic battlefield. Labier will save you from a few wounds with an in-depth look into the tricks players use to outwit the competition.

Of other interest is a thorough description of how orders are processed. The Nasdaq is a complicated structure of computer networking that needs to be understood when it comes to choosing a platform from which you wish to trade. Another issue is the up-and-coming Level III that Labier gives the low down on.

I recommend this book for someone interested in getting into Level II. A trader needs the tools best-suited for their interest, and the information provided here will lay it all out for you. Put your strategy together and prepare to succeed.

5 out of 5 stars you need this book.......2001-11-30

There are already many good reviews written about this book.
So I just want to add,
you need this book if you want to become a day trader.
It tells you about the essentials about order entries, order routings and Nasdaq Level 2.
Also the new Nasdaq Super Montage which will be implemeneted in 2002 (thus making Level 2 and its entry strategies obsolete) is covered and explained in this book.
All the online brokers are advertising with their quick executions. But any market order at any online broker is quick.
You're not really that quick as long as you don't know how to tell an ECN or a Market Maker and as long as you don't know where to route your order via direct access trading (which isn't that expensive anymore).

          Book Description

Regulatory reform in the late 1970s and early 1980s vastly transformed the labor market for transportation workers. Most research in this area focuses on the effect of deregulation on the earnings of nonmanagement company workers in airline, trucking and rail. Deregulation of transportation industries, though, has had a broader effect on workers. For instance, deregulation also influences workers hours worked per week, working conditions, worker safety, and a host of other labor issues. Deregulation might also influence the earnings of managers and self-employed workers in transportation industries. Examining these issues is valuable because such analysis provides a more complete assessment of labor market changes following the shift to a more market oriented business environment.

Transportation Labor Issues and Regulatory Reform adds to the debate on deregulations influence on transportation labor markets by presenting empirical evidence on an array of labor market outcomes in transportation industries. Contributions to this volume are categorized by their analysis on worker safety, working conditions and employment opportunities, and by their analysis on managerial and self-employed earnings

                Book Description

This book surveys the past, present, and potential future variability of hurricanes and typhoons on a variety of timescales using newly developed approaches based on geological and archival records, in addition to more traditional approaches based on the analysis of the historical record of tropical cyclone tracks. A unique aspect of the book is that it provides an overview of the developing field of paleotempestology, which uses geological, biological, and documentary evidence to reconstruct prehistoric changes in hurricane landfall. The book also presents a particularly wide sampling of ongoing efforts to extend the best track data sets using historical material from many sources, including Chinese archives, British naval logbooks, Spanish colonial records, and early diaries from South Carolina.

The book will be of particular interest to tropical meteorologists, geologists, and climatologists as well as to the catastrophe reinsurance industry, graduate students in meteorology, and public employees active in planning and emergency management.

                  Book Description

This book is an exposition of semi-Riemannian geometry (also called pseudo-Riemannian geometry)--the study of a smooth manifold furnished with a metric tensor of arbitrary signature. The principal special cases are Riemannian geometry, where the metric is positive definite, and Lorentz geometry. For many years these two geometries have developed almost independently: Riemannian geometry reformulated in coordinate-free fashion and directed toward global problems, Lorentz geometry in classical tensor notation devoted to general relativity. More recently, this divergence has been reversed as physicists, turning increasingly toward invariant methods, have produced results of compelling mathematical interest.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction to General Relativity.......2006-06-04

If you want to engage in a serious study of general relativity, then you must master the mathematical language of semi-Riemannian manifolds in which it is cast. Sadly, the development of classical Riemannian geometry as studied by pure mathematicians only parallels the development of semi-Riemannian geometry in the early stages; eventually, the two subjects diverge rather drastically. For example, the famous Hopf-Rinow Theorem, one of the cornerstones of modern Riemannian geometry, simply has no Lorentzian analogue at all; every single equivalence in the theorem fails in Lorentzian geometry. Thus, one could master all five volumes of Spivak's definitive treatment of Riemannian geometry and still be unprepared to deal with light cones, timelike, null and spacelike geodesics, and the multitude of other uniquely semi-Riemannian constructs that appear in general relativity. O'Neill's wonderful book, which first appeared in 1983, provides the well-prepared reader with a mathematically rigorous, thorough introduction to both Riemannian and semi-Riemannian geometry, showing how they are similar and pointing out clearly where they differ. After developing the mathematical machinery in the early chapters, the last part of the book turns to general relativity by offering lucid introductions to the Robertson-Walker cosmological models (Big Bang singularities), the Schwarzschild model for a single non-rotating star (including black holes), and a brief introduction to Penrose-Hawking causality theory. If you would like to study a pure Riemannian text in parallel with this one, I would recommend the text by Boothby, written at a comparable level of difficulty, which remains one of the clearest and most accessible Riemannian geometry texts on the market. For the serious reader who wishes to continue on with a study of the Kerr solution to Einstein's equations, modeling the exterior spacetime of a rotating star, O'Neill wrote an entire book on the subject in 1995, now difficult to find but well worth tracking down. This 1995 text contains one of the clearest, most accessible
introductions available to the difficult subjects of the algebraic classification of the Weyl curvature tensor and the corresponding Petrov classification of spacetimes. I studied from O'Neill's 1983 text when it first came out and I have continued to use it as the primary text for an advanced undergraduate course I have taught over the past 20 years. It is not an "easy" text to read, but then, I have never found the "easy" introduction to differential geometry and general relativity. The reviewer who says this is not a suitable first text is simply in error; there is no better first text on the subject. If you have studied linear algebra, advanced calculus, and a little topology, then with dedication and hard work, you can learn more from O'Neill's text than from many of the far more popular recent texts, written by physicists, which attempt to circumvent the mathematics insofar as is possible while introducing general relativity. This is a perilous course for which the serious student will pay dearly later on, when she/he wants to study any of the many areas of modern physics in which differential geometry (differential forms, bundle theory, connections on a principle fiber bundle, gauge theory, etc.) plays an essential role.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, terrible print quality.......2006-02-19

This is a wonderful book, with a clear, concise and precise exposition of the fundamental idea in riemannian and semi-riemannian geometry. Although I would not recommend it as a first text, it will be the text that you continue to reference later, and turn to when you want the best mathematical treatment.

However, I do not recommend that you buy a new copy. The print quality is terrible; the binding is poor, but even worse, the text quality is absurd. I have been using a library copy with cloth binding and sharp, clear text. It is obvious that the new printing in the green cover is based on a photocopy of the original rather than a new typesetting. While this means that no errors have been introduced, I found it painful to read. I would suggest looking for a used copy.

So 5 stars for the book, but only 3 stars for this printing.

1 out of 5 stars Very good contents but.........2004-02-23

The only drawback, and it is a serious one, is the binding. For a such expensive book, one could expect a DECENT binding, but the outcome is a SHAME.

So 5 star for the contents an 0 for the binding

This is one of the best books on Differential Geometry I've ever read. It includes a clear exposition of all the basic results and then goes on to the most deep aspects of the subject, making it useful for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experienced working mathematicians. It's a pitty that it's no longer available.

                  Book Description

This book introduces the concepts of tensor algebras and differentiable manifolds to the intermediate-level student. It describes analytical and geometrical structures built on these basic concepts. Those structures -- which include differential forms and their integration, flows, Lie derivatives, distributions and their integrability conditions, connections, and pseudo-Riemannian and symplectic manifolds -- are then applied to the description of the fundamental ideas and Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, and special and general relativity. This book is designed to be accessible to the mathematics or physics student with a good standard undergraduate background, who is interested in obtaining a broader perspective of the rich interplay of mathematics and physics before deciding on a specialty.

Reviewer: Gonzalo Torroba from La Pampa, Argentina It's and excellent book where you can see all the power and ellegancy that tensors have in physics. In "Tensors and manifolds..." you study mathematics in a clear and understandable way, knowing it's purpose. Some little points: I think it does not have enough applications about vector calculus (Frenet formulas, scalar potentials, Maxwell equations...).I would have also preffered it to contain more about general tensor theory: pseudotensors, curvilineal coordinates, and also about Riemann spaces.

                    Book Description

This book is a new edition of "Tensors and Manifolds: With Applications to Mechanics and Relativity" which was published in 1992. It is based on courses taken by advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics and physics, giving an introduction to the expanse of modern mathematics and its application in modern physics. It aims to fill the gap between the basic courses and the highly technical and specialised courses which both mathematics and physics students require in their advanced training, while simultaneously trying to promote, at an early stage, a better appreciation and understanding of each other's discipline. The book sets forth the basic principles of tensors and manifolds, describing how the mathematics underlies elegant geometrical models of classical mechanics, relativity and elementary particle physics. The existing material from the first edition has been reworked and extended in some sections to provide extra clarity, as well as additional problems. Four new chapters on Lie groups and fibre bundles have been included, leading to an exposition of gauge theory and the standard model of elementary particle physics. Mathematical rigour combined with an informal style makes this a very accessible book and will provide the reader with an enjoyable panorama of interesting mathematics and physics.

5 out of 5 stars It saved my relationship..........2004-01-25

and probably my life. No need for romantic elitism here, some of us are socially inept enough to actually need "love letters for dummies". Maybe most of us.

1 out of 5 stars No, this is not the way to do it.......2000-05-04

...I'm sure Mr. Movsesian is a sincere, lovely human being, butI agree with the previous reviewer that this book could serve as"Love Letters for Dummies" ... only I don't consider that acompliment.

The author provides sample love letters and lots of pretty quotes by famous personalities through history, and then gets down to the nitty gritty in detailed outline form, moving from "Use words which are familiar to you" and "Use alternate words to create variety" (all of which requires detailed explanations, apparently) to that all-important reminder: "Determine the subject matter." There are sections devoted to defining the parts of speech, lists of effective words, and dozens of entire "Love Paragraphs," "Love Sentences," and "Love Poems" and poem fragments you can paste right into your declarations from the heart.

If all of this sounds a little, well, schematic and calculated, I'm afraid that's how it looks to me. From my perspective, having written and received some dynamite love letters over the years without ever turning to reference works or instruction, this book would only be of use to a person who was either too young really to be in love (say, a 12-year-old), or too illiterate to express something honest, true, and vulnerable that is direct from the heart...

I suspect I won't be buying a copy of Mr. Movsesian's poems, thank you very much. END

This is a great book for those of us not used to expressing our feelings. "Love Letters for Dummies" would be another appropriate title. It gives you formats to use, and ideas to fill those formats with. A lot of good examples which are easily modified to fit your specific circumstances are also available. With it, I was able to keep a trans-Pacific long distance relationship going for about 6 months, averaging three letters a month. Fortunately (I can say that now) that romance died out, but the information I retained helped me out in my current relationship which involves being away from my lover for weeks at a time (I'm a sailor). By the way, through peculiar circumstances I once visited the room of the "trans-Pacific" girl after she had already dumped me. I noticed she still kept all my letters, so they must have been good!
