    Book Description

This book is the first of its kind in providing, simultaneously and comprehensively, historical, institutional and theoretical foundations for developments in the stock market. It debunks many a myth about stock price behavior and the valuation of stocks. The traditional valuation models are tested and shown to be often weak and unreliable, especially when applied to the valuation of technology stocks. New paradigms are suggested.

The authors seek to answer many questions about the stock market: Why invest in stocks, how to invest in stocks, how to value stocks, how to change the risk profile of portfolios, how to analyze the results of stock investing, and how to minimize estate taxes and maximize control, even after death.

All aspects of the stock market are covered, including the basic tools that will enable the reader to understand the stock market basics, the history of stock market performance in the US and overseas, the various ways to value stocks and to assess their risk, and the various methods that have been proposed to capitalize on the inefficiencies of the stock market, be they temporary or permanent. The book also deals with the derivative markets for stocks.

Beginning with the introduction of security market, this book goes into the analysis of broader financial aspects. Some of the materials covered in this book may be too complicated for beginners; however, if you keep reading it repeatedly, you will know what it is talking about.

"Pessimism about the stock market ignores the fact that never in its history has the stock market moved straight up or down. The cyclical nature of the market is a historical constant, and is hardly an aberration." ~ pg. 3

If you are interested in analyzing the results of stock investing, this book presents not only the basic tools needed to understand the stock market, but it also gives a history of stock market performance in the US and overseas. The main chapters cover:

The Fascinating World of the Stock Market - Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and NASDAQ. This section explains why the health of the market can be determined by a small sample of stocks. A list of the twelve golden rules of investing is also given to encourage confidence and wisdom.

Investment Philosophies and Techniques - Detailed information on Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds.

Performance History of US Equity Markets - Extremely detailed historical analysis complete with graphs and charts.

US Stock Market Performance Relative to Other Instruments and Markets - "History has amply demonstrated the superiority, over time, of stock market returns over the returns that are available from such other investment tools as bonds and commodities." Pg. 180

Balancing Risks and Returns: Three Theoretical Insights

Equity Valuation - Interesting sections about Amazon...

    How to Select Stocks
    Stock Options, Warrants and Convertibles
    Retirement Planning and Tax Minimization
    Wealth Preservation

Every aspect of the stock market is covered in this book, complete with detailed analysis. This may be essential reading for any investor, whether or not they manage their own portfolio.

Sarkis Joseph Khoury has lectured all over the world and shows his insight into a wide variety of financial and economic issues. He has also served as a consultant to major financial institutions and continues to lecture at many overseas universities. He is also the author of Conversations with the Conscience.

"There is no substitute for having a core set of beliefs or investing with investment advisors that do. The market, no matter how it deviates from what is fair and accurate valuation, will ultimately come back to levels that are consistent with fundamental values." ~ pg. 82

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reference Guide for Equity Market Investors.......2003-12-08

The book, Wealth Forever, is a landmark achievement that will greatly benefit all investors who read and apply its lessons. If you only read one book about stock market investing in your life, make it this one.

Wealth Forever is a one volume encyclopedia of historical data, equity market theories, and common sense about investing that will teach you about any fact or idea you need to know while giving you the framework to apply the learning to your own investments. The book is rigorous while remaining accessible. If you can understand simple algebraic equations, you can comprehend everything within its pages. The book's many detailed footnotes will also lead you to other books and articles that display more on the same subject.

While each subject has to be highly condensed to get the essential points across, the authors did a marvelous job of being sure that important material was included. For instance, the discussions of the Capital Asset Pricing Model are preceded by stating the assumptions behind the model. Most people simply apply the model without realizing that its assumptions differ from the real world by a large degree.

In my consulting, I often work with the chief financial officers and treasurers for major companies. If you read this book, your understanding of the equity markets will exceed all but the most knowledgeable of those professionals. The reason I make that point is that there is a constant outpouring of new research testing theories about the equity markets. Most people simply apply what they learned in graduate school, and much of that information has now been disproved by more recent studies of the financial markets. Yet most people do not take the time to keep up-to-date.

I hope that this book will be universally adopted by corporate executives, professional and individual investors and by corporate finance students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

I only found two aspects of the book to be less than outstanding. First, a lot of the material in the first few chapters could probably have been better placed after chapter 10. It seems to be placing the cart before the horse to talk about opening brokerage accounts and how to read technical charts before describing the approach one should take with investing. Second, the book needed a little better proofreading. The obvious errors that remain undercut the book's credibility. Although I did not check out all of the equations in detail, those did seem correct. Some of them, however, are annoyingly chopped up in the printing. It's as though the equations were typed in one software format, and that format didn't work well for the typesetting. In the text, Peter Lynch is described as Peter Finch in one place, and Procter & Gamble is consistently spelled as "Proctor & Gamble." The time focus of the book's narrative about the markets veers back and forth between 1999 and 2003 in the text. Some of the material about 1999 is written as though the book ended there.

One of my favorite aspects of the book is that one set of evidence is used to help the reader understand all of the evidence. For example, there's a lengthy section looking at the apparent undervaluation of United Technologies that shows how one can assess such a subject, as well as the limitations of various stock valuation methods. Similarly, stock-trading strategies and their results are compared to index fund results so that readers can get a sense of the cost of information and trading compared to the benefits that can be achieved.

I came away, once again, confirmed in my view that index funds are a wonderful solution for almost all investors.

I was also reminded that we need to remain vigilant in being sure that our knowledge of important subjects is up-to-date. I hope the authors will bring out new editions of this book every five years or so.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! An outstanding book. Read this Now. 10+.......1997-04-22

Theo Wilson covered the great trials in this country from the 50's through the 80's. She spent 10 years preparing this book. Sadly, she died just as the promotional tour was scheduled to begin with an appearance on Tom Snyder's show. Theo's voice, a delight to her many friends, comes through loud and clear. It's hard to decide which is more enjoyable, the many funny annecdotes or the numerous pithy and insightful comments on some of the most famous trials in our lifetimes. Theo was maybe 5 feet tall, but she was a giant as a writer. She lit up every room she was ever in. She also didn't take any guff. While covering Charlie Manson's trial, he tried to intimidate her during a recess in the trial. She said "Oh, Charlie. Grow up!" You owe it to yourself to get this book. Ignore the hard-to-get warning. I saw the publisher yesterday (4-20-97) at the LA Times Festival of Books, and they still have plenty of them. Look for Linda Deutsch, Theo's best friend, on the Today show next week. Linda has decided to complete the promotional tour for the book since Theo is unable to. Linda is the AP's premier court reporter. You'll recognize her from the O.J. trial where she was the only journalist not to get kicked out by Judge Ito.

5 out of 5 stars A great read. Great writing, great stories, & funny, too!.......1997-04-07

Theo Wilson was the best reporter of her time, and this book gives her insight into major stories she covered: Jack Ruby, Charles Manson, Patty Hearst and many others. Wilson has a way of making you feel you are right next to her in the courtroom, noticing the details that make a story come alive. When heiress Hearst was on trial, for example, Wilson noted that her millionaire parents sat close to the defense table, but "there never was, during those long weeks, a spontaneous gesture of affection, a hug, a kiss, a hand reached for...They were living through the same nightmare but they could not share its terrors." Theo Wilson was known as the dean of reporters over a 40-year period, most of them for the New York Daily News. Journalists are not held in high regard today, but this book shows how honorable and responsible reporters can be. At the same time, she brings into view the reporter's world while the story is being chased and after the deadlines met. Theo Wilson had many adventures -- some funny, some poignant-- during her career. Reading about them is just plain fun

        Book Description

This volume traces the decline of landed power in England between 1815 and 1939, primarily in political but also in economic and social terms. The essays by leading authors in the field examine different aspects of the decline of landed power. New light is shed on the Corn Laws, the allotment movement, and the relationship between the landed classes and the state in the earlier 20th century, all parts of the dramatic and significant saga.

                Book Description

All living cells are able to detect and translate environmental stimuli into biologically meaningful signals. Sensations of touch, hearing, sight, taste, smell or pain are essential to the survival of all living organisms. The importance of sensory input for the existence of life thus justifies the effort made to understand its molecular origins. Sensing with Ion Channels focuses on ion channels as key molecules enabling biological systems to sense and process the physical and chemical stimuli that act upon cells in their living environment. Its aim is to serve as a reference to ion channel specialists and as a source of new information to non specialists who want to learn about the structural and functional diversity of ion channels and their role in sensory physiology.

5 out of 5 stars A QFT book for physicists not for mathematicians.......2005-04-13

This is a QFT book written by a physicist (Veltman is one of the
1999 Physics Nobel prize winners) for physicists. Mathematical
rigour was definitely not one of Veltman's major concerns when he
wrote this book. However clarity was indeed a big issue for him
and that is most unusual if you take into account that most Nobel
prize awarded physicist, are usually much more concerned about
"image", "posterity" and "mathematical rigour" than by
                    pedagogical matters.

This book is a very good one to start with if you want to learn
QFT. It makes no use of the path integral formalism (which is the
prefered one by "modern" QFT theorists) . The canonical
formalism (the one used in this book) makes explicit the local
nature of QFT; this is an important issue since locallity stems
from Lorentz invariance and QFT is nothing but the physical
theory resulting from quantum mechanics and restricted
relativity. I fully agree with the statement that the path
integral method should be sistematically discarded in
introductory QFT books like this one.

As its title indicates, Feynman diagrams are the central issue of
this book. Veltman explains in the introduction: "This is then
the aim: to make it clear which principles are behind the
(Feynman) rules and to define clarly the calculation details".
This seems to be the natural choice for such an introductory
text; quoting Veltman again: " ... the theory (meaning QFT), or
rather the succesful part (of it), is perturbation theory ...
Perturbation theory means Feynman diagrams ".

This book provides a clear logical frame that supports the
calculation machinery of perturbative QFT's and should be
recommended to any person willing to introduce himself/herself in
Quantum Field Theory as a first choice course book.

Taking into account that this is an introductory book, its
short extension (200 pages) its scope is limited to QED and no
serious attempt is made to treat non-abelian theories.

One minor (for me it is minor, since my english is also rather
poor) annoyance: Even I (my mother tonge is spanish) can see
that the writing style is not very good and that some of the used
expressions are nothing more that literal translations from dutch
                    into english.

it's a CERN yellow report from the 1970s sometime. this is the revision and printed version of it. he knows what he is doing, or at least the nobel commitee thought so when he got the prize with t'hooft. anyway it's called diagrammar and you can download it from the CERN site.

5 out of 5 stars Why using imaginary time?.......2001-02-05

I just browsed through this book in a bookshop, so I can't judge its quality (I copied the 5 stars from the current average), but I didn't buy it because I noticed it apparently uses the imaginary time convention! I thought this convention was completely obsolete and thus I am not inclined to buy such a book. Well, Veltman shows how to convert all formulas to conventional metrics in an appendix, but for me this shows how weird the book really is: after all, conventional metrics courses do not show you how to convert their formulas to imaginary time metrics.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking with Feynman diagrams.......1998-07-21

This is a book on quantum field theory using, much more than what is usual, the language of Feynman diagrams, which are pictorial-analytic expressions for terms of the perturbative series for S-matrix elements. Several years ago what could be considered a cruder version of this book circulated widely as a Yellow Report from CERN. It was an admirable text, from which most of us learned how to write the Feynman rules for gauge theories in exotic gauges, and how to renormalize everything by using the dimensional methods. Now comes the book version, polished so that beginners can use it, and with a little more tissue connecting the bones. The Yellow Report was called Diagrammar and became something of a religion. Perusing the book I see no reason why it should not have a comparable success. I particularly admire the graphic derivation of the Ward identities and the (also graphical) treatment of unitarity, very difficult to find antwhere else. The author, Veltman, is a great! authority in Field Theory and a fantastic teacher.

                      Book Description

Loosely connected with Part One and the German legend of Faust, Part Two is a dramatic epic rather than a strictly constructed drama. It is conceived as an act of homage to classical Greek culture and inspired above all by the world of story-telling and myth at the heart of the Greek tradition, as well as owing some of its material to the Arabian Nights tales. The restless and ruthless hero, advised by his cynical demon-companion Mephistopheles, visits classical Greece i search of the beautiful Helen of Troy. Returning to modern times, he seeks to crown his career by gaining control of the elements, and at his death is carried up into the unkown regions, still in pursuit of the `Eternal Feminine'. David Luke's translation of Part One won the European Poetry Translation Prize. Here he again imitates the varied verse-forms of the original, and provides a highly readable - and actable - translation, supported by an introduction, full notes, and an index of classical mythology.

5 out of 5 stars Great work, great translation, and great notes.......2002-04-21

The previous review is clear about the value of this translation. Knowing a bit of German, I can say that this translation does use shapes instead of forms for Gestalten. the real value of the work beyond the translation, however, especially for first time readers, is found in the notes made by David Luke. These notes are helpful for the historical context, allusions to Goethe's personal life and work, and allusions to philosophy, literature, and more ... all essential to understanding the work.

5 out of 5 stars The most faithful of the translations I've read.......2000-12-23

Looking at some reviews by other reviewers, I realized that not everybody has heard of Faust or of Goethe, and I was pretty shocked.

The first part of what I'm saying is about this translation. As Luke so graphically showed in his "Translator's introduction", there are many things that pull at the translator's central agenda: rhyme, metre, primary meaning, nuance, and so on, and the translator has to achieve a balance. Among the translations I've read and from snippets of what I've seen of other translations, Luke's translation is the most accurate of the ones I've read, in many ways. In other words, the compromises that Luke himself details have been executed here with near-perfection.

It comes down to what you like. Luke's translation is the closest among all attempts so far to being dubbed a "universal" tranlslation. But just as we cannot have a universal programming language, we cannot have a translation that will please everybody.

The positive for this translation is of course the extraordinary faithfulness to the original while maintaining rhyme. The negatives are what one would expect; the translation does not read smoothly on the line level. To clarify, a line carries over to the next line in too many cases to make for a "smooth read". An example:

"Refreshment! It's your own soul that must pour / It through you, if it's to be anything."

This "pour it" example siuation occurs too often, and is jarring for those who "grew up" with Arndt's or Wayne's translations.

The second part of what I'm writing is about Faust itself, the Masterwork: as any German will tell you, Faust is one of the centrepieces of literature, and it is worthwhile learning German JUST to read Faust. Each person comes away from "Faust" having found that that he/she was looking for. Every person is reflected in Faust; "Faust" is the ultimate story of Man. What tempts us, what keeps us, what draws us on, what tears us, what defines us, what lies in store for us - it is all there. "Faust" is a journey everyone should undertake. There is nothing controversial here - no "God", no "Hellfire", nothing but Goethe's straightforward but not blunt, sensitive but not compromised, philosophical but not dreamy, analysis of the human situation. "Faust" is the Master thinker Goethe's sincere attempt at looking at it all; and it does not fall visibly short of the task.

Part I should be read by everyone; Part II is not strictly a sequel, but in many ways is, as Wayne shows in his Introduction. Part II requires some knowledge of Greek Mythology; and does in many ways "complete the story". Only, it goes way beyond that.

                          Product Description

Goethe's Faust is a classic of European literature. Based on the fable of the man who traded his soul for superhuman powers and knowledge, it became the life's work of Germany's greatest poet. Beginning with an intriguing wager between God and Satan, it charts the life of a deeply flawed individual, his struggle against the nihilism of his diabolical companion Mephistopheles. Part One presents Faust's pact with the Devil and the harrowing tragedy of his love affair with the young Gretchen. Part Two shows Faust's experience in the world of public affairs, including his encounter with Helen of Troy, the emblem of classical beauty and culture. The whole is a symbolic and panoramic commentary on the human condition and on modern European history and civilisation. This new translation of both parts of Faust preserves the poetic character of the original, its tragic pathos and hilarious comedy. In addition, John Williams has translated the Urfaust, a fascinating glimpse into the young Goethe's imagination, and a selection from the draft scenarios for the Walpurgis Night witches' sabbath - material so ribald and blasphemous that Goethe did not dare publish it.
