Self-help books are notoriously bland because they treat the reader as if he's Mr. Potato Head. All you're supposed to do is sit there on the end of the table and soak up whatever supposedly new and insightful perspective the author reveals. This is supposed to help your business and personal relationships, but does it? No, it doesn't, because you have difficulty applying the self-help book to your everyday life.

Without Direction.......2001-02-06

In the beginning I was without direction, usually without a guide or guidance. My path had been very directional with successes but not the achievements of passion that I truly wanted. Now, midlife and midlife crisis finds me looking to my inner self for answers. I was introduced to this book "The Journey", last year by Jed Selter. This succinct and poignant tale of two strangers on an airplane speaks in both poetry and prose of the path of life. It puts in perspective where you are and where you are going down that road. It is a storybook as well as a textbook that can be applied to everyone's life story and reaffirmation of the self. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

A waste of money if you are an undergraduate........2000-12-13

I bought the book hoping it would help me find a way to study in the US because I am not wealthy and can't afford the extortionate fees of universities in the US. The book was more useful for people who are looking to study as a post graduate. As an undergraduate nursing student looking for full funding, it was pretty useless.

A Very Useful Resource.......2000-08-12

The book was quite useful and I'm so glad I bought it. It features detailed descriptions of fellowships, grants and scholarship for both undergrad and post-grad studies. I especially like the way it categorised the awards, i.e. by field of study, academic level, average number and amount of award, destination instution among others. All these help to make searching easy and productive. Though I'm not yet succesful at getting support, I have no doubt that I will. I highly recommend it for international students wishing to study in the U.S.

Excellent book for non-normal distribution models.......2005-04-10

I'm a Ph.D student in Operations Research. I loved this book since I first read it. The book provides comprehensive and up-to-date analysis and application description of two types of very important non-normal (nonGaussian) models: generalized Gaussian distribution model and stable distribution model. These two types of models are key models in successfully modeling real data in an impulsive enviornment. The book focuses on Laplace distribution models for generalized Gaussian distribution models and on stable distribution models.

The book provides many tools (algorithms, smoothers, and filters) to assist in applying nonGaussian models in a real life. Order statistics is presented in one early chapter and then used to produce these useful tools, which include weighted median smoother, stack smoother, LAD (least absolute deviation) algorithm, weighted median in LAD regression, LMA (least mean absolute) algorithm, weighted median filter, optimal weighted median filter, recursive weighted median filter, complex weighted median filter, weighted myriad smoother, and weighted myriad filter. To me, the concept of myriad smoother and myriad filter is very new. They are, as I understand, especially deveoped for stable distribution models.

In recent years, stable distribution has attracted more and more attentions. However, the parameter estimation of stable distribution is always difficult. This book uses FLOM (fractional low-order moments) procedure to estimate stable distribution parameters, based on Kuruoglu's early work.

The book's CD contains MATLAB files of algorithms, smoothers and filters. Thus all tools can be tested for quick results and modified for furthering improvement. Certainly, these MATLAB files are a plus for (expert) people looking into and examining details.

A comprehensive book in the field plus software, finally!.......2004-11-12

I have been searching for a book on this topic that covers the fundamentals all the way to more advanced topics, particularly on design tools. This book is perfect for someone who is interested in learning the field, broadly. Other books I looked at seemed too specialized without the basics or simply a gathering of test cases. The software provided is a BIG plus!

Useful introductory tool for scholarship.......2001-04-20

is a useful tool for someone interested in learning more about what has been said about . It is quickly clear on reading this book that has garnered so much criticism and commentary that to wander into scholarship without a book like this would be like wandering into a large mountain range without a map. This book summarizes 226 different works on . For each work summarized there is at least a paragraph and sometimes as much as a page of substantive description of the author's viewpoint. This bibliography provides a summary of the central works in the Hamlet critical canon whether they be articles, books, or even just footnotes as in the case of Freud's preliminary comments on . There is, for example, a summary and citation for T.S. Elliott's brief article in which Elliott concludes the play was "most certainly an artistic failure." Summaries of the criticism of Coleridge, Samuel Johnson, Ernest Jones, G. Wilson Knight, Lacan, Nietzsche, Schlegel, and J. Dover Wilson are all included.

There are two areas in which this book could be improved. First, the editor explains "where evaluative comments could not be resisted they appear at the end of an annotation" (p. viii). I would have preferred a more active approach to evaluation, perhaps a paragraph at the end of each entry providing context for the work in the larger critical scheme. There also were some authors not included whom I would consider outstanding. For example, myself and many other critics consider Janet Adelemen's treatment of Hamlet in "Suffocating Women" the best psychoanalytic review to date, but it is not annotated here.

This book is certainly a useful starting point, but it is obviously not a definitive bibliography and I would have enjoyed more critical commentary.
